    I have heard at least 20 versions of this, but this one is the most magnificent. I have never heard anyone interpret the tenor role the way Jonas Kaufmann does, and it's a revelation. I felt as though I have never really heard the tenor solo before! Wonderful!

      what are we human beings thinking, we don't care about life, love of our fellow man. We seem only to want to wow and then stomp on each other. Divide and conquer, are we just wild animals? Things and money , we seem to worship power and money! There have always been those who created beauty and peace and there were also those who worship a false God that wanted attention through nothing but violence . How did it get so out of control? I am 80 years old and hope to see my great great grandchildren pick apples from my tree,,,G0D help the leaders of the world seek peace and cooperation so that we will continue to live and love one another, thank you,

    In the world you think that German is a hard and hoarse language, almost frightening.
    Instead this song suggests it is a very beautiful, expressive and amazing language.
    Italy and Germany have done so much for opera.
    Love from Italy to our German Brothers.
    Ciao:)

      German is *not* at all a hard or hoarse language. It is incredibly melodic, amazingly flexible, and altogether gorgeous. I'm French and I'm fluent in 5 languages. By far, by very very far, German is to me the most beautiful of them all. And besides, Germans are usually quite soft spoken (unlike drunk, but who cares).

    • @juergenhaeussler3848
      @juergenhaeussler3848 8 років тому +11

      Germans soft spoken - depends on the region where you are in Germany. By the way bavarian is most popular dialect in Germany and is soft spoken. When you go up North it is more hard spoken.

      +Michael Doyle René Pape is a German opera singer, who had his debut with the Berlin State Opera (Unter den Linden) in 1988, and with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1995. Because he and the other soloists are German, their pronunciation of the lyrics is perfect, and it sounds as Beethoven intended. Two of these opera soloists---Pape and Meier---also appeared (again with Daniel Barenboim) in the PROMS 2012 performance of the ninth symphony in London---part of Barenboim's Beethoven cycle. In that performance, Jonas Kaufmann and Anne Schwanewilms are replaced by Michael König and Anna Samuil, respectively. If you loved Pape's performance here, I think you will also love Michael König's performance there. (The four soloists were dressed in red, gold and black, putting the colors of the German flag smack-dab in the center of Royal Albert Hall. Still, some people probably didn't catch on.)

      It isn't perfect diction, which isn't surprising. It's pretty commonplace for singers to be lax in their native tongue's diction. There are a lot of times that vowels which should be long are short in this performance and vice versa. The first instance of it is when Pape sings the word "Stimmen" with the i vowel pronounced like English "ee" when it should be like the I in the English word "sit."

Unlike all other's I have seen/heard, yes they hit the notes just like Kaufmann does but there is this certain thinness to the quality of their voice. It is like Kaufmann= Condensed milk, all others= skimmed milk.

    Pape and Kaufmann are incredible here !
    Their pronounciation is very good (I don't even speak german but I can tell when someone's diction is bad and it kind of tickles me) and they both have such warmth in their voice ! And warmth is, in my opinion, the most important thing when it comes to the solo parts of this masterpiece !

      Ron Simmons I‘ve heard the 9th at least 10 times live with Barenboim, it’s always wonderful. He’s one of the greatest Beethoven conductors imo. Also wonderful his West Eastern Divan Orchestra. One rendition in Bayreuth with the Festspielorchester was the best I‘ve ever heard, but this one comes very close 😍

    With strong German roots, I feel such a connection to this music, to these people, to the (better parts, at least) of this history. Beethoven was a genius, and his glorious music will resound within our hearts for eons. (And yes, Pape was brilliant here! Kaufmann, too. And I always love Meier.)

      Indigo Bone you either feel a connection to all or none at all, wars shaped europe more than anything else

    • @IndigoBone
      @IndigoBone 8 років тому

      Yes, but I was referring more to the Nazis and the horrors of WWII. This was much later than Beethoven, thus, I do not need to feel connected to such atrocities. And, I would rather not. I know it's inescapable, but concerning Beethoven, it is removed, at least somewhat.

    • @XLightChanX
      @XLightChanX 8 років тому +2

      that's what i meant too, choosing only the good sites of your roots is bs, how can you say you feel a connection to germans when you want nothing to do with the third reich? and germany didn't exist yet when beethoven was alive, so what to feel connected about?

    • @IndigoBone
      @IndigoBone 8 років тому

      Wow, thank you for the history lesson, of which I am well aware. But thanks. As for the Third Reich, that was, technically, the Nazis, and not ALL Germans. Splitting hairs, I realize, but it's a hair I'm more than willing to split. It's there. It's a part of the history. But I don't have to like it, just as I don't have to like the hellish roller coaster on which we are about to embark in America come January. I don't like it.
