    In this video, I look at getting the classic Rockman clean tone that became famous in the 80s from bands such as Def Leopard, Journey, and Boston. the Rockman was built by Scholz Research & Development, Inc. a company founded by Tom Scholz from the band Boston. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    I had a Rockmen in the 80s. The sounds were killer! I use a boss katana 50 for outdoor gigs (that show a threat of rain or a lot of sun exposure). That amp sounds incredible with my 24 year old Don Grosh Strat style retro classic.

    All these years later(I saw Def Leppard live on the Hysteria tour w/Tesla opening!), and this is still one of the best clean tones ever recorded, imho. Obviously, it wouldn't work for every genre, but THIS is the clean tone 'in my head'. Funny enough, Def Leppard's song "Let It Go" from their album 'High & Dry' is the sound that made me buy a Les Paul & a Marshall! LOL

    Thank you SO Much for this video. I've been chasing this exact tone (clean "Hysteria") for years, and while I've gotten ballpark close, your settings nailed it for me on my Katana 50. In particular, using the acoustic channel with modulated reverb, paying attention to high cut frequencies, boosting the compression tone, and setting the effects chain to chain 1 made a huge difference. Now I've finally got that sparkly, jangly "Hysteria" clean tone at my fingertips!

    • @jayrajiva1228
      @jayrajiva1228 3 роки тому

      Also, I'd like to request a video on the distorted tones for the Hysteria album. Again, I'm in the ballpark, but I don't feel like I'm all the way there. Would love to see you break down how to get those classic Def Leppard rock tones!

I can't emphasize enough that this small detail makes all the difference in the world! Great video! Cheers Paul, I just did that settings to my Katana and played with a low budget guitar (Harley Benton Fusion-II) and the result was phenomenal. Of course the pickup response is pretty different from your high end guitar I had to tweak a little bit here and there but the overall result is stunning! 249 Euro guitar (B-stock) and 249 Euro Amp (Katana 50 MKII) and it's a brilliant and crystal clear sound. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge about this beautiful Amp 💖🎸🤘😎

  • @ericbgordon1575
    @ericbgordon1575 2 роки тому

    I've been pursuing a similar presentation to this one on a different Boss unit, the ME-80. I've always assumed it and the Katana line shared a common engine, even if Katana has more features. Am I amiss for utilizing the Roland JC120 amp emulation instead of an acoustic simulator (which I believe is in the compressor section of this unit and can't be accessed simultaneously? I always blindly assumed that Tom Scholtz modeled the clean signal chain on the Rockman line after that of the 120.
    Furthermore have you created another video in which you attempted to approximate the you approximate the distortion sounds on the Ruckman? Earlier in 2021 I purchased an NU X Plexi Crunch stomp which frankly does approximate that Boston/Def Leppard sweet spot. I do feel disappointed that no distortion generator on board the ME-80 is capable of the same task.

    Other than Tom Scholz, why would anybody want to ever make their amp sound like a Rockman? Sure, I owned one... But that was only because it was literally the only game in town at that period in history. You bought a Rockman or one of those crappy cigarette box amps. To this day, I cannot stand the sound of chorus on a guitar -- because of my youth trying to play AC/DC and Kiss songs on a Rockman.
