- Paul from The Studio Rats shows how to get Great Clean Tones from the Boss Katana using the Boss Tone Studio. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
I love mine, and I've played tube amps forever before I bought a katana. I've tuned in the best clean sound I've ever had.
Can you share your settings please ?
Best new amp of the 2000's.
Without a doubt, the best sounding Boss Katana presets around...thank you for creating and sharing these awesome tones.
George Keller cheers George, that’s really nice to hear.
Finally an excellent tuto that shows how to have a good clear tone with the Katana !! I'm definitively convinced that it's the amp I need ... Thanks a lot
DevadipEric awesome glad it helped!
Flick the power mains rocker to “on” , set the gain very low . Master all the way up , volume to suit😜. Appreciate your adjustments with the editor mate ! it’s all inside .... No one truly needs any more than one of these little amps . I’m looking for a second K-50 for a stereo rig. I slam the front end of my K-50 with a BOSS CP-IX and or JB-2 on low drive settings . Glorious IMHO
I have a katana 50 and I am constantly amazed. I might get the katana artist even.
I dialled this in (without the tremolo effect) and it's a lovely sounding clean. Thanks for the tip about the compressor, too, Paul. Makes a real difference!
nice one Dan, I’m glad it helped.
The K-50 is beautiful amp..
Love it Paul. You brought the clean kat to life! I used to play a Princeton set just the same way - boost, compression, hint of tremolo. What a great lush tone that had. Inspiring, thanks again!
You have good ears matey. I like your thought process and the clear explanations.
This playlist helped ne sooo much! Thank you!
Since I have never had a Modeling amp before, I had my issues dealing with the effects. Now I know how to handle a Delay, Compressor and others. This has really brought my sound to another level. You are great!
Hi.
I've just watched your complete series on katana tones, and it has to be the most helpful and informative amp and tone set up video I've ever watched. Good job. If I could afford it I would buy you your own coffee shop.
Cheers Kevin!
Great video again Paul. Thanks !!!! 👍🏼
Man, this is so helpful as a new gutiarist using the Katana.
I posted this on a number of guitar sites: I am still learning how amps work. I have a katana 50 mk 1. I always had trouble figuring out all the stuff on the Boss Tone Studio. But I stated watching the Studio Rats You tube channel and they really helped me to set up all my effects and levels for clean, crunch and high gain. I also like the noise reduction feature because I play a strat so it really cuts out all that single coil noise. So, if you are like me check out those Studio Rat vids.
I just ordered a katana 100 & have been watching every video I can find about it so I can dive right in. The one thing I'm certain about is that every guitarist in the UK has one! Lol! Awesome vid! I love the heavier side on the tonal spectrum and have always struggled with a good clean tone,.. will be revisiting this channel! Cheers from Newfoundland!
yeah the old Katana is popular, apparently the best selling amp of all time.
Stunning! Will be trying this with my Kat 50!
I'll be doing the same thing with my 50. These Rats tutorials have been the best I've seen on the Katana amps.
Great video. Your demos of the Katana have been instrumental (no pun intended) to helping inform my decision to buy one.
Glad it was helpful!
Liked it a lot, will try ¡this out asap in my 100 MKI and my Artist. Could be what I've been looking for.
Jose Manuel Esteban cheers Jose
Ive took your last preset from the pack and played it on my Squier Tele via 50mk2 and my friend was astonished how close to the John Mayer sound it is. Ive been searching for a preset like that for months. It has punch and yet its clean. Thank you from the bottom of my ❤️
Bombilakus that’s great, enjoy the presets.
cool beans man.. thanks
Very good, thank you so much
I did it today.. it's just awesome tone. Thanks for your video....keep rocking Man...
Thank you! Great job. Really enjoyed this and looking forward to more.
Hi David, thanks for your comment, there are more vids like this on the channel.
Dude, I'm a newbie here. Would you do and share a princeton reverb based tone with us ? Amzing channel. Very didatics, I'm in love with the tones !
I have presets for pure Princeton 65 and a bit with overdrive
Great tips man!
Nice video. You have an interesting pronunciation of Katana.
I love the Katanner
Just got a Katana Artist Mk 2 and this video is incredibly helpful it is fascinating to see how a professional gets the best out of the amp - if you brought out a tutorial on how to get the best out of a Katana - I for one would buy that
Cheers Martin.
@@TheStudioRats quick question - I have a ga fc with the katana 2 - is there a simple way to boost one of the patches when you are soloing - if anyone is likely to know it is you - I have an ev 30 expression pedal which you could use but a bit unwieldy compared to a boost switch
Hi Martyn. You just need to use the expression pedal but set the parameters for a smaller boost, I’ve done a video exposing expression pedals, that will show you how to do it.
The Studio Rats great - thanks
@@TheStudioRats Just to close the loop - on the Katana Artist Mk2 there is a solo boost
control which you can activate by holding any one of the GA FC stomp buttons down until they flash - see page 8 of the manual! I will be checking out your video as well though!
Really good video this
Thanks Flobeeone.
Thank you for the great video. Would be great to know your opinion on : 1. any reason to get he MKII instead of the I , 2. how to get a great fuzz tone, 3. how to get a lesley sound ( ala SRV). Thank you
357jazzman hi, get a mk2. There’s lots of vids how to get different tones and using the effects on our UA-cam channel.
Subscribed!
Almost bought this amp. Went with the Vox Cambridge 50. I thought the clean tones sounded better on the Vox. Both great choices.
I've not tried the treble boost I've been using the clean boost and graphic to get a fendery clean, it A/B's well with my Marshall TSL
I found the out of the box clean to be lifeless and dull (mk 1)
I legitimately planned to return my Katana 100 MK2 until watching several of your videos.
I couldn't get any good sparkling cleans and overdrive sounded fizzy.
Now I'm still returning it... And buying the Artist.
I'm going to snag your preset packs as soon as my wallet recovers.
I did the same except I started with the 50
This may be a dumb question, but, is there a particular order you’d recommend watching these videos in? I clicked on this one for a first, because it was first on the list, but there was reference made, to prior Katana videos?
The best sounding tones are the ones that compliment the guitar
Your a genius
im not sure my wife would agree with you Jackson, but i appreciate the comment
That’s great. Can I back off the gain if I want to have a real clean tone like for songs on hysteria by def leppard ? Eg when you’re picking arpeggios in ballads
Hey Paul yeah absolutely.
I follow exactly your settings and somehow mine sounds like garbage yours sounds great !
Think I'll try the treble boost over the clean boost
Great channel, really enjoying the work so far in the videos I've watched, subscribed!...tsl files pls
Hi Steve, there’s a vid on the channel that tells you how to download the file.
Paul, most of us never gig thru our DAW like recordings are, can you possibly make patches that sound good through the actual amp?
to me it does sound good through the amp, tone is subjective
Awesome! Thank you for this and to other videos you created! I just copied this now and loving the tone. By the way, how do you do the panning effect? Did you connect the Katana to your audio interface? I'm using the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen and ProToolsFirst as my D.A.W.
I’m connecting via USB
@@TheStudioRats Ahh yes. I am as well. But I am also connecting the Katana's line out going to the Scarlett's input jack when recording. What I would like to know is how can I achieve the panning delay while recording to the Katana going to the ProToolsFirst.
what is the chord progression at the beginning of the song
It's like a repeated IV V vi vi (with some variation). His root note is probably C (but i dont think you pick it as a bass note)
Why does my katana sound so bad and muffled... no matter what tone I set it too.... please help...
The power outlet may be the problem
Hi guys, great videos, and advice for the Katana 100 amp. question please can you do a video on how to create Hank Marvins sound , I. E echo, delay ect. thank you in advance
I use the clean boost
I’m struggling to get decent clean tones with life to them. I’d love to try the presets offered in this video.
Hi Keith, I’m afraid the free patches offer has expired, but I have patches on our website thestudiorats.net
I’m feeling the same
@@willm3027 I returned mine and replaced it with a Monoprice Stage Right 15-watt tube amp and a bunch of pedals. I'm much happier with this setup. I'm tempted to replace the speaker with a greenback, but it really doesn't need it.
@@keithbenedict8764 sounds like a better approach! I was thinking the same before you sent your reply. I’m curious to what sound you were looking for? 😅 I’m looking for a Mac demarco sound..
ua-cam.com/video/xfD60stuZAw/v-deo.html
@@willm3027 You know...there wasn't really a specific sound I was going for...other than something that sounded good. The Katana MkII just didn't do it for me. Playing open note chords with any amount of distortion was like an ice pick being driven through my ear drums. Incredibly shrill. I'm a big David Gilmour fan, so I wanted to get somewhat close to his tone. This amp has a very classic rock sound. With the OCD overdrive pedal, I can get a very close Angus Young tone.
The Monoprice just has a warmth to it that the Katana can't get close to. And frankly, I don't think you get the same results out of a digital "pedal" as you do from a real, analog pedal. I bought a Vick's Audio '73 (a very good EHX Ram's head clone), a Fulltone OCD, Behringer compressor/sustainer, analog delay and reverb. I'd like to get a Mooer Elec Lady flanger (EHX Electric Lady clone, used by Gilmour) and maybe a chorus. I spent nearly triple what I paid for the Katana, but it's worth it.
Great sounds Paul.Really like your channel. Do you use the master knob on full? As Boss suggest or the channel volume as high as possible (live) . Some blues settings for the next video?
Mike van Leeuwen hi Mike thanks for you’re comment. I don’t run the master on full but I will try that. I’ll start planning the blues vid for you. P
@@TheStudioRats Hi, that's great to hear (blues sounds vid). Thanks, Mike
I run the volume on full and just use the master for overall volume. bass just over half mid about a quarter treble just under half clean channel green boost half way 25 watt setting. sounds awsome strat on neck pickup. sounds bluesy to me.
@@TheStudioRats I'm not sure if you can help me but I have the fs-5l boss switch pedal and have noticed it doesn't change between channel 1 and 2 on bank A but changes from channel 1 on bank A to channel 2 on bank B. Do you have any idea why this might be?
Chris Walton hi Chris, it’s not something I’ve done, but look at the assign tab in Tone studio.
I just want that James Hetfield clean tonw
Decent tone on this setting but not what I would describe as clean. Going by your video title touting "awesome clean tone" I was expecting to hear something akin to the shimmer of a Princeton or Twin. Your definitely well past initial breakup. These days any device can make dirty tones and most are totally dominated with them. The trick with all of these supposed do everything platforms is to be capable of great TRULY clean and desirable tones as there are far more genres than rock. Also, after now seeing one close up (MKII 100 head) that a guitarist in our band bought I am unimpressed with the tiny little cheap knobs and plastic jacks. He's had his less than 2 weeks and the cheap plastic main input jack has already failed! He was most unhappy, but I guess you get what you pay for. Nope...give me a quality valve amp any day. I'll stick with my old trusty MESA DC3 head that can go from shimmering clean to raucous and survive the rigors of the road or weekend warriors.
please review the katana artist and let us know if it is worth the extra amount
Song @ 3:27? Anyone?
judging by the playing there mate, you're a big fan of the police and Andy Summers yeah?
why i get too much buzz noise when i connect it to my pc
What's the DAW being😂used? Can't use cubase?
How did you connected the Amp to the DAW (not the Tone Studio) ? Over USB or Line Out?
Are you running this direct into daw? Or mic ?
This question may have been asked, but when setting up a clean tone patch, is it recommended to put the pick up selection on your guitar in the middle? Or is that a preference thing?
it's preference. whatever sounds better to you.
Very helpful information....thank you! I have a new Katana MkII on the way and I am taking in all the info I can to be ready to dig in when it gets here. Nice Tele! What pickups are you using? Are they 'Lace Sensor' pickups?
5:54 the foot controller "DOES NOT COME WITH THE AMP". You have to purchase it seperately.
This is true.
And it does not work on the 50. The 50 is crippled to only allow a simple 2-button switch.
I said: wow Erik Ten Hag playing guitars
Paul have you played around at all with the Global EQ in the System area?
Hi Fred, I have a little, but I don’t really feel it needs tweaking
I tried it on the mk1, sounds great. But I'm always scared for that ice picky tone in a band setting. So the amount of top end high kinda scared me but I can dial down the tone knob on my thin line tele a little.
I haven’t really noticed the ice pick tone.
Great tone! I've managed to recreate it on my Katana MkI and it sounds great. One thing I wonder, though, is how you're getting your signal loud enough with the channel volume set so low. I boosted it up on mine so I was topping out at -6 dB in my DAW (USB out) but I know boosting channel volume changes the characteristic of the amp. Any advice?
Hi Keith, thanks for the message. To be honest I haven’t noticed the level being low when recording into my DAW. If you are recording at 24bit your fine recording at low levels.
Hi there! How did you manage to do it on Mk1? As the booster and mod can't be added both also delay and efx. Thank you
@@rioslatino552 Hi The tone was setup on a mk2.
@@rioslatino552 I had to make sacrifices, sadly. I just chose what I thought were the most important effects to have for the tone.
I used the Treble Booster, then used the Comp in the FX slot, then used Delay 2 (delay+reverb setting) for the delay sounds with the reverb. Not enough space for the tremolo, unfortunately.
There's third-party software (Katana FxFloorboard Editor) that gives you the ability to use everything, all at once on the MkI, and completely customize the signal chain of absolutely everything. I've had problems with it but a lot of people swear by it.
@@KeithShelley1 thank you very much for the advise. I'll do the same
Hey dude, not sure if you'll reply to this but I'd appreciate it... I've watched almost all your videos on "Boss Katana Awesome ______ Tones", and I always copy your settings exactly the same, and my katana just doesn't sound the same
I have the Boss katana 50, but I know you're using the USB so I assumed there's no difference between the 50 and 100 in terms of that
I just don't get why I cant reproduce the same exact sound you're getting
Do you have like certain global EQ settings or something man? (If so would you be able to share them with me?)
I can seem to get decent tones, but none of them have the bite that you get, I also get a lot of noise with both clean and gain tones, while you seem to get very little...
I don't know if my ear is playing tricks on me but I'd love some help man
When i record Via USB, it is also pretty quiet compared to yours, I see you have your volume at like 20%, I need mine all the way up to be able to hear it
Hi Nicholas. Are you using a guitar with single coils or humbuckers?
The Studio Rats I have both man, do you think I could email you a sample of my replication of your clean sound so you can hear how different it sounds?
Sure. Send it on the studio rats website. We do a live q an a tonight 8pm BST. I’ll answer any questions you have.
The Studio Rats okay thank you man, where exactly can I send it on the website? Is there a forum or can I find your email there?
There’s a contact form, or the studio rats Facebook page.
Does the katana act as an interface into the daw to record?
Yes, with the USB function you can record direct. I know this is 4 years late but I figured I'd give you an answer since nobody else has haha
Great demo, I love mine.
what is the tune your playing at the beginning
JD hi JD, glad you’re enjoying the Katana. The tune at the beginning was an off the cuff thing.
Sounds awesome, cant get it out my head 😄 I'll learn it later.
You should check out 'sneaky amps' for the kat, if not done so
Cheers JD. if you like that check out some of the songs on our UA-cam channel.
This sounds exactly like Ellie Goulding - On My Mind
And thats all its got that variation button sounds crap. I have the 100watt 1x12 I was a bit disap(poo)nted I just have it switch off! And bring the treble up and balance the presence and I turn the variatuon button and I all I hear is a wasp farting in a tin can. So what happen then I bring the treble and presence down. And then switch it off and all I hear is dullness. Its like you just cant win. Does the footswitch only come with 2x12 and the head amor does it come with all the amps.
is this a free software for the boss katana?
Too bad we can't save settings for the basic functions on this amp. But at least we can save the patches.
Como controlar os efeitos, durante um espectáculo?
what song is that
Huh... mine didn't come with a foot controller ;)
what is eq for clean sound? thanks
Does the amp break up when you strike the strings hard or react to how soft your picking is, like tube amps do?
It is very dynamic yes. I own a lot of high end valve amps and the Katana sounds great.
Yes, good lord yes
Are you actually mic-ing the Katana?
He’s not. He’s recording the usb out
Do you know what real pedal would be equivalent to the clean boost?
I dont know exactly but all clean boosts more or less sound the same.
for clean tones only...... will the roland blues cube stage be better than the katana?
I’m afraid ive never tried one.
@@TheStudioRats well thats a costly piece of roland equipment... my only gripe is that it doesn't have an efx loop... while it is there on the katana 100.
i want more controls over my amp during live and i find the gafc a bit primitive.... and difficult to find....
really i dont know what to do.. all i know is i dont wanna tweak & just wanna play
What is The name of The intro Song?
Not a song just a little riff I must of been working on at the time.
@@TheStudioRats nice
Hi there, is it possible to make this preset on Mk1? How can I add all those 5 together (booster and mod) (delay and EFX)?
Hi, Im afraid i haven't used a mk1. I'm told the sounds are more or less the same so if you follow the controls, it should all line up.
Tone=dialed
bassman tone please T_T
I plug my katana to pc but I can't make it sound half as better as you do. What's the secret? It it just dialing the settings?
Hi Rod. Have a look at my other videos explains how to get an awesome high gain, crunch, clean tone.
Thank you Paul, will do. Thank you for your help!
When you are changing the different effects levels is there a way to change them back to default without doing it to the whole amp or do you just have to remember what they were in the first place?
What's that chord you play at 3:33?
Em9
@@TheStudioRats Thanks
Kataner
Not my idea of a "clean" sound. If you want to hear great , pure guitar sounds in a rock context listen to the first Wishbone Ash album (1970). Never bettered IMHO.
I sent mine back. I didn't like it. If you like a lot of bells & whistles, you will probably like it. But I found it very limited for just simple, clean tone. The acoustic channel was decent but the clean channel was very thin and trebley. Frankly, I think my Fender Champ 40 or Orange 35RT had much fuller, warmer clean tone. Not my cup of tea.
Thanks for your comment Don. The Katana does have a lot in it and for the money is fantastic, but I also prefer my valve amps.
@@TheStudioRats I agree. For the price it's a bargain IF you like lead, crunch and brown with effects and gimmicks. But the clean was extremely thin and tinny. I know it's sounds silly but I think the Champ 40, especially for the money, has a much better clean tone and lots of voicings and effects as well. I also prefer the simple analog sound of the Orange amps. Warm, full and clean. It's just what I like.
Don Lessnau Great that you found what you like. I think “thin and tinny” probably depends on what kind of guitar you are playing through it. I don’t find it thin or tinny with my Gibson SG and Les Paul. My PRS DGT also has hot pups and they don’t sound tinny either. Now I DID have a PRS SE from Indonesia and that sounded thin and tinny until I built a custom EQ for that particular guitar and set a dedicated channel for it. In the end, I changed the pickups in the guitar and that solved all problems. The Katana is an extremely versatile bit of gear if you have the patience .
The Studio Rats Have you tried a Quilter? Sounds just like a tube amp. Solid state but all analog. Amazing.
This video is misleading. There are no clean tones, only crunchy tones.
Play straight into it. I have never heard anything so sterile in my life. A glorified bells and whistles practice amp. Cheap end speakers too. It is cheap enough for the kids though.
Clearly your boomer brain can’t figure out how to dial in a good setting. I’m surprised you can even work out how to post a UA-cam comment so good job on that one.
Well, where this amp shines is its versatility, which is showcased in this video and hundreds of others. This amp isnt meant to plug straight in and have magic tone! You have the ability to change sounds specific to your guitar and it's actually pretty ingenious.
i think to are trying to hard.
