Expert Bike Fitter Neill Stanbury explains why your saddle may not be the reason you are having saddle discomfort. You seat is only one contact point so it's crucial to look at your bike fit as a whole to make sure you are correctly setup.

Neil spyed on my Bike Fit last week!! I've got a 5mm shorter RH leg and I've been grinding my sit bone for YEARS, exactly as Neil described!!
Expert fitter here in Melbourne, Andrew Kantor, South Melbourne Physio fixed me up and for the first time in 30 years, both sides of my arse are happy!

@@jasuseppala5295 he spent a lot of time on my shoes and configuring my insoles to act as an orthotic. Also put in spacers under the cleat on the shoe of my 3mm shorter leg
If I didnt experience this, would never have believe that this would fix a very long term issue.

As a fellow clinician in physical therapy, I’m both humbled and grateful that you’re able to diagnose and provide clarification on the mechanical faults leading to my saddle discomfort. I’ve used heel lifts in my running/fitness footwear for a decade, but didn’t realize cleat shims existed until now. Thank you again for the all the helpful tips you graciously share on your channel.

You are the best roadbike 'physiologist' on the web.
Term 'bike fitter' is woefully inadequate to describe how smart you on the most important subject to all road cyclists.
    Brilliant Niell. Thank you.

This lad is arguably the best bike fitter out there, been tinkering with saddle height and doing some flexibility work and lowering my saddle just 15mm has transformed it...Over extended legs were causing a bit of frontal knee niggles and quad tightness, now all gone....Worth watching them quite a few times so you can more easily link up in your brain the "spiders web" view of bike fitting he describes ...!!

Another splendid video with Neill. Actually thought he described me a couple of times 😊.
It's awkwardly comforting to know I'm not the only one having position issues on a bike 😉

Good discussion. Sometimes it's not bike fit nor saddle issues but it's the shorts and padding causing pain.

    Thanks Neill
Video is right on the nail. I’m guilty of buying lots of saddles, only to find out it was my position in the end. Had a bike fit as well but that only relieved the symptoms a bit. In the end I found out it was cox arthritis and an inflamed right hip joint.
Once that was sorted life on my bikes improved drastically.
Now I am well on the way back to getting better. Smp Dynamic was a great addition too.
Wish I had seen this video 5 years ago 😂😂😂
Keep up the great work 👍👍

I have narrow feet. My first Bont shoes were narrow and felt great. One time I wanted to save money and bought regular fit Bont shoes. Never gave it much thought as they felt comfortable. Suddenly I was getting issues so I went back to seats I used to ride, to no avail, bought the G8 soles - never got on with them. The moment I switched back to narrow Bont shoes, the issues were gone. Similarly I bought groovy Giro lace up shoes and I got all sorts of discomfort including numb hands. Changed the shoes, problems fixed. I reckon many of people's problems start with the feet.

Well this video cleared it for me as i am having only a one sided discomfort on the sadlle. I didn't purches a lot of saddles. Its not my sitbones but some right sided shafing. I know that my spine isn't straight so maybe thats the problem.

The ever increasing trend for some cyclists to wear leopardskin underpants undoubtedly adds to the problem. Makers of such garments are not 'seam trained', so tend to put the offending ridges directly in line with one's most delicate and precious objects, which results in a bum deal all round.
If only such people were made to sit upon a Brook's B17 saddle for eight hours whilst working, they would soon come to understand that 'Long Distance and Leather' make ideal bedfellows.
I have heard it said (down here in Cornwall) that St Piran sit upon pasties for increased comfort (Blakes of Liskeard, of course), but I am yet to try this solution for myself - but it would possibly help to solve the problem of where to keep one's lunch whilst on the road.
Chapeau to all of you at Christmastide.

What is the basic difference betweek Curved/Flat saddled. My bike Trek Emonda came with a Curved Saddle which was a bit too wide and was causing saddle issues by rubbing inside. I got a bike fit and was advised to go for Selle Italia Flite S3 which is 130mm. The problems just went away over night. Now 1 problem I notice now is I always feel like sitting upright and came to know that the saddle is for more dynamic/flexible riders and I should go for a SLR boost as per Selle Italia which takes care of Posterior Pelvic Tilt which I have very little due to my desk job. I am really confused now. Please help

When watching pro riders so many seen to ride way forward on their seats. The pressure on their areas where the sun don't shine makes me have to look away in horror! 😳 Or do they get away with this because they are pushing on the pedals so hard that it minimizes the force by the saddle that would make a normal, amateur rider sterile?

This is a great video. Are there any symptoms regarding that the saddle shape is not meant for you (e.g., flat, semi-curved, curved) especially if you have slightly posterior or anterior rotated hips? Personally, I think curved saddles tilt my hips little too forward causing excess weight on my hands.

  • @fpgamemearray

Thanks for sharing! regarding the reach and pelvis rotation problem, what about riders with natural anterior perlvic tilt? I often find myself shifting away from the hoods on easy rides, but it's genereally due to finding the saddle to uncomfortable if i rotate the pelvis further. Might be a good idea for a future video!

What about chamois quality and how it is on your butt and relation to seat? What about crank arms that are too long?

    • @Hardi26
      @Hardi26 Рік тому +2

I'm about 173cm tall, 45 years old. I never had correct crank arm length until I replaced them 2 years ago. The right length for me is 165mm. Bikes usually come with 170 or 172.5 cranks. Well I describe it so. I'm now angry to bike manufacturers and I'm also angry to sellers and even bike fitters who write a lot of.. well lets just say confusing and useless stuff in their blogs, that won't help to decide. They always end their talk with something like. A smart person buy only one pair of cranks. A fool buys them all, or something similar... Tall people need long cranks was also one sentence I heard over and over again.. I did read many articles and blogs about it. I knew that too long cranks are bad by experience. I had tried 175mm cranks a very long ago. But I hesitated, because.. I did not want to be the fool who buys new cranks that he actually don't need. I got impression that it's not important factor. Why else they would sell bikes with different frame sizes all fitted with same crank length. Too long cranks really were a issue to me. The saddle height was wrong because too long cranks and it caused so much trouble. I did not need to change saddle height much after replacing cranks.. maybe I have lowered it something like 3 mm after that.. But really too long cranks are the root of evil. I don't say that I hate now all the guys who are taller than me, but I have crude to them, because they are privileged by bike manufacturers getting special treatment..

@@Hardi26 my bike is 11 years old, and it was top end then, and also when I started riding. Just now in the process of upgrading to R8000 11s, and a new 50/34 crank with 165mm arms. I’m 5’6 with 29in inseam and should of been on 165’s from the beginning, but didn’t know any better, and I guess neither did the bike fitters I’d been to. For about the last 6 years though after a lot of research and study, I sort of knew I should be on shorter cranks but I’d had an expensive DA Stages power meter I’d recently bought and having to rebuy all that made me hold back a while.

@@GNX157 I don't have so expensive bike it's just a merida cyclocross bike bought as new on 2015, but the bike is the most important thing in my life and most expensive thing I own. I upgraded the shifters and rear derailleur to R8000 too this year. The cranks I switched from some FSA 172.5 to shimano FC-RS510 36/46 165mm. The difference is that I can ride much longer. I probably would not need chamois cream anymore, but I still use it anyways. Better safe than sorry.. I won't be out of breath after every small climb.. If I had this good bike 20 years ago.. If I at least had a bike that had as good fit. But well, this experience, the struggling through of years. It has a value too. I'm lucky that I never been into group rides. I just like to ride alone to quiet rural places and enjoy scenery. ^_^

I was researching too. In end I stopped reading the articles and just measured my femur's length. And decided by the equation that the femur length(from hip axle to knee axle) measured in inches is equal to crank length in cm. It was exaxtly 16 and half inches. to measure the femur. I mounted 2 sticks on outer side of my leg(one on tight and other to shin) with elastic bands, or actually knee warmers and something and then sat on bike on trainer and then moved the stick around until I found the exact axle at knee and then on hip too.. This way I had something solid to believe into. Otherwise could just keep reading and researching and hesitating.
