Intel CPU too hot? Try this easy fix - More FPS, less heat

  • It's possible that your Intel CPU is running too hot, especially if you have a high end CPU like an i7 or an i9. These CPUs often run really hot and in some instances may be thermal throttling because of it. The good news is it's possible to tweak the CPU voltage (otherwise known as under volting) via a free bit of software in Windows. You don't need to mess about with complicated BIOS settings to do this, so it's perfectly user friendly.
Here I'm showing you what to do and the steps you need to take to change the voltage and test to make sure the temps are dropping without impacting performance.
    You'll need these tools:
    Intel XTU (Extreme Tuning Utility)
    www.intel.com/...
    Cinebench 2024
    www.maxon.net/...
    HardwareMonitor (www.cpuid.com/...)
    HWInfo64 (www.hwinfo.com...)
I'd recommend changing the Core Voltage Offset by small increments to start with. For example -0.05v and then testing before and after if you see a reduction in CPU temps alongside an improvement in Cinebench scores. I'd also testing your favourite games - especially if they're CPU bound like Rainbow Six Siege. Make sure they're still stable and watch for a performance increase too.
Increase the increments of voltage reduction and test to see if that makes more difference, but take care because if you take too much off it may result in system instability that causes crashes or blue screens.

The Intel 14900k has an AI tuning option in the Intel ETU. It's only available on the I9 14900's.
Out of curiosity what bios settings do you run? Do you just run F5 recommended settings with XMP enabled?
I use a Asus z790-a gaming wifi DDr5 board paired with the 13900k.
What drives me nuts if the performance can vary greatly.
With just a few changes like using optimized phase XMP I've been able to score as high as 24,000 on Time spy under the CPU and 31,450 on my GPU (7900 xtx).
      I use 3 different benchmarks.
      1. CBr23. Best score 40,090 worst score 36,000
      2. 3d mark. CPU all core 17,400 to 16,700. Single core 1170 to 1270. Time spy cpu score anywhere from 24,000 to 21,850
      3. Intel XTU. I can score anywhere from 13,100 to 14,000
I try and use the same settings when I update my bios but I'm seing big jumps in benchmark scores!
Idk why I'm losing so much performance! I've tried all kinds of different bios settings. I've tried using Intel ETU.
Idk what's up but with the newest Bios my System agent voltages jumped to 1.35. it was 1.25 for the first 3 bios when my scores were higher! Idk if the extra voltage is causing the ram to to be less effective.. idk what to do, but I do prefer to get the performance I paid for. Especially since I once had it perfectly scoring 13,900 to 14,000 on the Intel XTU benchmark and 23,800 to 24,000 Time spy CPU score. All while hitting 5.7+ ghz. Getting over 200fps on Asseto Corsa Competizione.
The one thing I will say is I regret buying the 7900 xtx Tiachi (white) I honestly feel my 3080ti worked better. I'm about to sell or trade it for 4070ti or super. Nvidia just seems to work better for my Sim titles

I assume you meant 0.070mV lol... But even 0.070mV is quite an undervolt.... and probably not stable at all under high AVX / AVX2 loads.
If you run OCCT CPU+RAM AVX instructions you will get errors, lots of errors. Some might even occur after 2+ hours of testing.
So yeah, 0.070mV is not "small" and certainly not stable.

I desablet the useless 5,8 ghz Boost (to make it idle stable) and set the E Cores from 4,3 to 3,3 Ghz what makes no Difference for Gaming Performance. I have a 360 AIO and use thermal grizzly pads. I tend to stick to using the higher-end stock-clocked AMD 65W CPU's that natively run cooler, & then ditch the stock AMD single 96mm Wraith Fan cooler that comes with it for something more robust. I recently paired a Ryzen 9 7900 12C/24T CPU with a DEEPCOOL AK620 Digital CPU cooler (twin tower heatsinks w/2 120mm fans) so that it stay as cool as is possible in a good air-cool build. No need to overclock. overheat & overstress components if you buy & match the right hardware for the right resolution target (1440p in my case). I also opted for the coolest (& most quiet) running 7800-XT GPU that I could find via online research - which is the ASUS TUF 7800-XT.

What are your thoughts on Asus multicore enhancement? Should this be disabled potentially to help with temps? Idk if it has quite a performance hit with it being disabled.
Also, do you know the part in the ASUS bios directly relating to the offset so once you find the level you like with XTU, you can then apply it on a BIOS level?

      - Enabled - Remove All Limits
      - Disabled - Enforce All Limits

5600MHz works fine without any issues on two sticks though. I haven’t tested my PC in games but the only issue I had, was Unreal Engine crushing. Other 3D applications seemed to work fine and all CPU stress tests were passed successfully. As I mentioned earlier a simple change of this parameter in BIOS lowered the max frequencies of my CPU but everything is working great now.

Either need to change some things in BIOs to allow for it to tune or you need to go to your settings and turn off core isolation to ensure the VBS is not active. This is directly changing your operating systems so you must lower some of your securities in order to allow it to change these things. You do this at your own risk

Id make sure that in the system information it says the VBS is off. If not then there may be something else there.
Id suggest maybe taking a look at the bios settings or maybe some of the additional things that xtu says it could be on that warning page on start up. That would be the only suggestion id have for that. But if you arent getting a warning page id reinstall it and retry to see if it comes up or if it runs.
