I actually disagree with him saying “Ant-Man” isn’t great. It’s actually a really solid film. It’s fun, exciting, funny, and has a heartfelt story behind. A dad trying to change himself to be a better man and father to his daughter. It’s a story to empower single dads in my eyes. It shows that not only is he trying to be better to his daughter, but also his ex-wife and her new husband. It’s a good film with a good message. I actually really enjoy “Ant-Man”. What I find most irritating is something that I've never heard anyone address: her powers are undefined. Why does an exploding experimental engine powered by an Infinity Stone gave her superpowers and not burn her to a crisp? What actually are her powers? What's the source? I get that people just brush it off because it's a superhero movie, but superpowers need some kind of anchor that limits what the character can and cannot do.

They could've made her powers unstable... therefore she has to use them in a calculated manner or she will begin burning her own skin or over exhausting and getting a stroke. The could've had her exert her powers at first and suffer a stroke due to exhaustion after a few minutes... making her realize that her powers need to be used in timed limited amounts or she will have another stroke due to overexertion.

    • @Darkwintre

I figured they'd actually use her back story and reveal she was half kree due to a relationship her mother had with the actual Captain Mar-Vell and she returned to her husband after her lover was ordered back offworld with no word to her.
Make the mother an inhuman and have the initial accident result in the use of that gh formula from Agents of SHIELD with Carol the original guinea pig and she recovers gaining Ms Marvel level powers.
Thus we now have a reason why her blowing up an experimental engine super charges her abilities that if similarly empowered turns her into Binary instead of what they did which was ridiculous.
Why didn't they make use of what they had instead of that crap?

My biggest peeve with the movie is the suppressing emotions story line. Like, she is forced to suppress her emotions and that limits her power.
But when she breaks the power limiter, she is still an emotionless board as she was before. Ironically - the villain, Jude Law's character, shows more human emotions
when he demands a fair duel - that Captain Marysuell dishonorably denies him.

This is HOW bad Captain Marvel looks, for a so-called strong woman character: I recently discovered that back in the freakin 1950s (TWENTY YEARS before even Leia or Ripley) that there was a cowgirl heroine on television: Dale Evans, wife of the HIGHLY popular cowboy Roy Rogers. She was INCREDIBLE from episodes I've seen: Courageous, Highly talented with the pistol (to the point she'd literally shoot guns out of villains hands), and incredibly tough on crooks. However, put her around children, and she'd shed all the toughness, go full maternal instinct and sweet talk to them. Kids of the era absolutely loved her, little girls dressed up like her, and many boys said they secretly wished she was their aunt. Plus, the plots were rather thrilling at times. If they could NAIL a strong heroine in THAT era, Marvel and Hollywood have no excuse for this modern trash.

I think this film is good example of how to make a movie without stakes. When I saw her beat Jude Law at the beginning of the movie, I knew that it didn’t matter what happened at the end. It was jut like Force of Awaken. I have made this argument before when you make a movie with an agenda in mind, then you can’t risk your hero being less than perfect. I have argued that there are several films that can have a feminist agenda and still tell story with stakes. One movie that comes to mind is First Wives Club. Each main character has a different arc when all three are mission of revenge. It is girl power movie and they stick it to most of men. The difference is that not all men are bad and one of the men that did wrong gets some redemption.
I tried watch videos of UA-camrs who praised the movie to see why they like it. Most of their points is it great to see a woman take center stage and doesn’t need saving. It has a cat in the movie (which I find weird point). The special effects are amazing. There are other points but they are surface level. The interesting thing these UA-camrs will say about any that has criticism is that they are just misogynist basement dwellers. I have left comments going over all several problems with the movie from no stakes, no character arc, continuity errors with the other movies, predictable ending and others. They tried to call me a hater of women but I will bring other movies like Kill Bill, GI Jane, Wonder Woman, 2000 version of Charlie’s Angels, Tomb Raider, Aliens and Terminator.

So much bad writing is being excused just because a movie has "progressive" ideologies in it, and any legit criticism is dismissed through the use of what amounts to name calling (calling people who have actual complaints things like racist or misogynist, or just haters etc). Meanwhile, movies with actual good writing, including better written movies with female protags such as Alita: Battle Angel, get massively lambasted.

I was first in line at the theater with a decent optimism for this movie. Damn was I ever disappointed.
One of my biggest irritations was the fact that Carol was NEVER in danger. Not once. Even handcuffed, she was an unstoppable force! At the end of the movie, she was completely unstoppable after taking the chip off. Yes, Superman gets this crap all the time BUT he has a moral danger to consider, and at no time has he ever been invincible to a good beatdown.
I could go on for a long while with my hate for this movie but aside from Carol herself, my true loathing for this movie comes from the complete de-masculinization of Nick Fury. Ironically, Maria's daughter, Monica, is the second Captain Marvel in the comics. This movie makes the bizarre decision to hype up Carol as this major glass-ceiling breaking character while making the black woman who had the title of Captain Marvel long before her her surrogate daughter.
Surprised you didn't catch the subtle hints Carol and Maria were closet lesbians raising Monica. Yet another instance of Disney "playing to the LGBT+ crowd" in the most under the table way possible so they can still appease their communist overlords in China.

Even the Air Force (for all the jokes about being the easiest branch, even according to members and my ex) has standards so people can actually do their job. If Carol couldn’t even pass the AF physical test and handle some teasing from the men (who can be very harsh even to their friends) then she definitely has no business being in the military.

The worst part, for me, is right at the ending, when Jude Law drops his weapons and challenges her to a fight, in order to show she's more than just her powers. In this moment, I sighed in relief thinking "Good! There is ACTUALLY a journey for this character. Because she kept losing to him in the first act, now she has to prove she has grown, and can best him, even without her powers"
And then... She just blasts him away...
This is like... The antithesis of character growth. She learned nothing, she developed nothing, she changed nothing (except her costume). She remembered some stuf, and now, instead of just "being awesome", she's "super duper awesome" (kinda like Mulan). I just threw my hands in the air and thought "Ok... He lost his power at one time because he fell in love with a moral woman, and angered his father. Thor's and his home Valhalla were deconstructed and rubbed into the dirt by SJW writers. He and his world deserved better than what was passed off in Ragnarok.

I don't really count this movie, since it was clearly shoed in due to activism pressure. Captain Marvel was nowhere near a popular (or known) character enough to get her own movie, nor was she tied in any way to the events in the MCU. But, at the time, Marvel was pressured to make a female led super hero movie (especially after Wonder Woman)
However, the obvious choice, Black Widow (which I think WAS the original intent), didn't pleased the activist for a couple reasons. First of all, feminists didn't like the fact that, in the second Avengers' movie, she considers her inability of having a child something wrong, that was taken from her. But second, and I think most importantly... Black Widow is NOT the all powerful hero the activists wanted. They didn't just want a female super hero, they wanted a female super hero that was BETTER and MORE POWERFUL than her male counterparts
The result... Were a producing team, director and, most of all, actress, who didn't understand the character, and shoed in a movie with the sole purpose of driving in a political message. Seriously, remove this movie from the MCU and you miss NOTHING. And Captain Marvel is not, by any means, a stupid character, but this movie was made for the wrong reasons, and with the wrong team behind it, making it a dull, boring, and unimaginative experience

A couple of things that stood out to me while watching it in the theater:
1 - When the Skrulls are being seen as the bad guys, they ALWAYS take the form of white people, particularly white men (and one seeming middle-eastern male type), but as soon as we are introduced to the fact that the Skrulls are the victims, they NEVER take on the appearance of a white person again. They appear in their normal form, or as blue Kree.
2 - Yon Rog is the bad guy, a white male character (the Supreme Intelligence, who should be the greater bad guy in the film, is a white woman). Something else that stands out, he bleeds BLUE BLOOD. If that wasn't a call out about "privilege" I'm not sure what is.

I disagree. I would say the beginning of the decline in quality of the MCU started with SM Homecoming. The MCU took Marvel's most famous hero a prime example of virtue and responsibility and turned him into an irresponsible teenager who gets everything handed to him in a silver plater by the all mighty Tony Stark. From that point we should have known things were about to get very bad.

    5. A TV show similar to Doctor Who about Carol travelling to other planets, meeting new friends and saving worlds
What we got instead: *a more soulless garbage rushed SJW version of the character that is extremely unrelatable and has no personality, her origin story is horrible and poorly written, and with her simple presence in Endgame she managed to ruin few moments and characters such as Hulk not having a rematch with Thanos.*

    Very accurate review. Now... From a layman, such as me, I had a slew of problems with stuff like;
When she was talking with the Supreme Intelligence and Nirvana's Come As You Are is playing. She left Earth in '89, I think. That song came out in the beginning of the 90's. She may not have even known who Nirvana was, depending on when she was abducted in '89.
Why were the Kree shooting at the experimental plane with laser canons and then got scared when Carol was threatening to shoot it with a pistol?
You mentioned the SHIELD discrepancy. Thanks for that.
The movie was oooooozing with feminism as was evident with what she did to the guy who was hitting on her. Him being a self-important ass was apparently an open invitation to crush his hand and steal his jacket, helmet and motorcycle. I guess, it would be pretty cool if a girl was being obnoxiously flirty with me so I could break her hand and steal her car, right?
The choice to play "I'm Just a Girl" during her fight scene made me cringe. Don't get me wrong, it fit the scene, but it was way too obvious.

I completely agree with the verdict here. One scene, in particular, stood out in my mind. The moment when Carol remembers all the things that happened to her and realized she always "got back up" was meant to be a very powerful moment. Unfortunately, it basically rehashed an exact scene from the movie earlier adding barely anything to it. To me it seemed like they were just saying, once again, look how perfect Captain Marven is. If they had done more than the same montage twice in the same movie they would have solved every issue the film had in my eyes. Imagine, in place of the first montage, they told a number of stories in a row. Each giving context to the series of moments shown in that first montage instead. We would get to see events leading up to Carol "falling." Each one building on the person we would grow to know over the course of the film. Then in the final conflict, we see the montage of her falling over and over again, only for her to realize she always got back up. BAM! The moment would have been amazing, emotional, and fulfilling. To me, how they cut it in the film felt like it was nothing more than feminist fan service. Because of that, they lost the message.

A few years back, I wrote a sci-fi book with a female lead. I chose to treat her exactly like my male characters--she's loaded with flaws, she's uncertain in the beginning, she loses as many fights as she wins, and she needs help from her friends ... a lot. By the end of the book, she's grown as a person, she's a better adventurer and a better friend. She takes personal responsibility for the people affected by her adventures and manages to come out victorious in the end.
And the feminists HATE her. They wanted her story to be the standard victim's story, to be downtrodden and victimized by society. They wanted her to be a man-killing war machine, taking revenge for all the slights sent her way and skating through all trials and tribulations with nary a hair out of place.
Whatever, that sounds like a clichéd Hollywood trope, a nothing-burger character Disney churns out enmasse. I'll stick with what I wrote and stand by it, everytime.

I think what would have been interesting if is Carol Danvers started out as a Mary Sue, but her character development is the realization that she's not so awesome or even likeable after all. Maybe the Kree implanted her with false memories that made her seem like she is and always was the most awesome Kree out there. Everyone loves and praises her, and she can do no wrong. Then she ends up on Earth where her real memories get triggered and begin conflicting with her false memories, and her real memories are of that of a woman who wasn't so awesome after all. Maybe she was a screw-up. Maybe she was a bit of a coward, unable to overcome some aspects of her cowardice, thus making it easy for her to accept the false memories and become this super special awesome person in order to hide from who she really was. Or something else. And whatever her flaw, it ended up being what led to her current situation.
These conflicting memories then lead to self-doubt and the dawning realization that she done did a lot of wrong. As a result, she feels unworthy of her powers and her powers are dampened, leaving her vulnerable. To get her powers back, she must face her real memories and the truth, and finally decide the kind of person she's going to be - someone who runs and hides from her problems, or someone who faces them, owns up to her mistakes, and tries to do better.
Thus she goes from little miss perfect to well-rounded and relatable human being.

Actually reminds me of another point about the currently political atmosphere: if you’re a feminist ally, you can do no wrong, even if you’re doing horrible things: which has led to the idiolization of political figures, and the tribalism of defending everything they do, even down to horrible totalitarian measures being instituted. On the other hand, if you’re not a feminist / ally, everything you do is wrong, even when you’re doing the right rhing, eg Trump.

One way they could fix Captain is to perhaps make her into a border-line villain antagonist then becoming full villain where a certain character is forced to confront her and put her down, I hope Rogue joins the MCU, she was for a time a very popular character and pretty much became one of the most recognisable faces of the X-men during the 90s, they must do the Rogue-Captain Marvel thing where Rogue gets Captain Marvel's powers, (a key trait missing from the Fox X-Men movies), it could be the chance to do Rogue right and perhaps making her one of the best and most beloved MCU girls... if they do this and don't ruin her character... Imagine a possible 'Avengers Vs The X-Men' crossover movie where, at some point, probably towards the film's climax there's a sort of recreation of the iconic Captain Marvel & Rogue fight but with a twist, reversal, of the hero/villain roles in this case with Rogue (Anna Paquin) battling an out of control & evil Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) to save everyone on both sides, thus gaining her powers & defeating her like in the comics..?
