What makes a superhero?
Is it simply strength? Is it power? Or do we only become heroic when we do heroic things?
As Marvel Studio's newest film, "Captain Marvel" hits theaters, this episode of Out of Frame looks at Carol Danvers' actions and motivations in some of the more recent comics to find out if she is actually a heroic character.
NOTE: There are no spoilers for the MCU film in this video (we haven't seen it yet), but there are spoilers for Marvel's Civil War and Civil War II story lines in the comics.

Ms. Marvel Carol would sit on Billy's face.
But Captain Marvel Billy would sit in Carol's face.
'Illegal alien attacks innocent black teen, war veteran saves the day'
is literally Carol Danvers attacking Miles Morales, and Captain America saving him
Carol is not an illegal alien. She was born in the US, and is a high ranking officer of the US air force, the accident that made her an alien hybrid happened way after in her life. So the correct wording would be "Retired US military attacks innocent black teen, war veteran saves the day". Another could be "NASA's former chief of security attacks innocent black teen, war veteran saves the day". And there are probably many other options. She used to have a rich background but who cares, right? Better make her a one dimensional character that makes stupid decisions.

“Every time someone tries to win a war before it starts, innocent people die. Every time.”
- Steve Rogers
To be fair in war innocent people also die. Often a lot of them. Covert operations are most likely to prefer over having started all the machines of war. The only question is do we want freedom (and thus can be robbed or killed by strangers) and responsibility or slavery and safety (as long as you do not step out of line)?
vincentgraymore the point is that it’s impossible to avoid tragedy and war. Only to be prepared for when that tragedy happens. You can’t slap a bandaid on a dead body expecting it to come back to life... but you can prepare for when those tragedies happen to make sure we have the highest probability of having the minimum amount of tragedy happening...
Seriously to try to assume that we can prevent a war “thousands dying” is a better terms of preventing tragedy than allowing countless millions dying in constant carnage of war. But here is the problem most people don’t understand. Diplomacy and room to talk between the two fighting sides is way too late to attempt when one side already attacked... war is complex and won’t always be as simple as you might think.
Stepping on peoples rights to prevent a tragedy is the same as arresting a kid for committing murder in the future so that kid can’t be given a life to live in public anymore just because one of the millions of possibilities that he will commit murder when he’s 35 years olds? Well that’s not fair or due process of what freedom really is...
vincentgraymore also being robbed is always a possibility regardless of being free or not. But freedom to defend yourself and your property is the right and responsibility you have when it comes to being free.
True that!
I believe in people's right to self determinate their own futures. Freedom is extremely chaotic and messy. But I would rather take it and live the my life my way than enforced "safety". People die every day that is a fact. But this doesn't mean life isn't worth living. You just cannot let fear cripple you.

Fun fact: in the comics she had a crush on spider-man and venom, and when scorpion got the Symbiote he told spider-man and spidey asked her about it, after she was coy and completely embarrassed when training
With him, I mean she's not the only one who got embarrassed when liking spidey, I mean rogue tried to kiss him (it was because he was being nice to her, which I kinda don't mind because I once liked someone because they were nice to me) anyway there's a bunch it heros which had crushes on spidey, I mean kitty p, jean g, x-23, emma f and I'm pretty sure Medusa (marvel) had crushes on him and tried to either kiss him or show love to him, x-23 got scared and clawed his back when swinging, emma was being a yandere when she found out spider-mans real lifestyle/identity and made MJ hate him for some reason until jean came to let him know which led him to ask her to stop, spider-man kissed jean as saying thank you for saving his ass when they were fighting saber tooth which pissed off Cyclops and Wolverine, and I remember another inhuman said she remembered spidey because he was the guy she knew had a pretty nice bottom which Medusa had agreed on which embarrassed him, I think in the ultimate universe spidey and kitty dated until he realized he was still in love with Mary which lead to him kissing MJ around her and she tried to beat the shit out of him until Iceman saved his ass, dw kitty and x-23 both dated another guy, kitty dated star Lord and I think x-23 fucked/dated Angel

Captain Marvel: the wrong way to make a female superhero movie
Wonder Woman. The right way to make a female superhero movie.

The single best aspect of "Captain Marvel", a movie about a white woman: the black man.

@God Himself Yeah I didn't like WW much either but Alita I loved.
@God Himself "certainty nobody will ever fight again because the god of war has been killed"
Whether or not it was the last war, ending that one was worth doing.
"Everybody one dimensional"
WW's view of the situation was one dimensional, but she developed. One was afraid (given the plot driver of too many politically tendentious movies) that the plot would simply validate her take on the situation, and discredit the male lead's take, but the takeaway was a compromise between them.
What seemed to be a sympathetic character turned out to be the main bad.
"seems like big reveal is gonna be that there is no god of war, suffering is just human nature, "
Now that would be a turd of an ending. How would she not know what gods exist in her own pantheon, being herself a demigod of that pantheon? That would contradict the premise of the movie, and her origin story, and the purpose of her age-long life.
@@digitalnomad9985 The movie did great on establishing that the war wasn't because of some big diety controlling them and it was just human nature. It's like a sheltered girl who knew nothing of the outside world coming terms of reality and her delusion of reality from being secluded from the rest of the world is breaking as she learns more from the real world. It was a good moral story for the first few acts.
Imo if we had seen the God of War actually do stuff in the background or have a twist where he has taken Hilter as his human vessel or something along those lines, the cgi battle ending would have been acceptable for most people. It could have made sense, maybe add in that the God of War is just helping around men in there wars so that's how he got his name and not really being the only cause on why humans keep on going into war. That way he would have more depth as a villain instead of some one-dimensional last minute insert villain just for some eye candy battle sequence. But hey, that's just an opinion, a film opinion.
Edit: think of the God of War like MCU Loki (for a lack of an easier comparison) He is the God of Mischief but its not because of his existence that mischief exists. Men go to war because of greed, to live, for liberty, and a whole lot of complex reasons, Diana's mindset that a God of War is the reason that men go to war and killing him would cause all wars to cease, has been flawed from the beginning. The god of war may exist but he has no real reason to personally appear in front of Diana at that moment.
