Great video brother. Is it just me or are the videos with Rufus in them always better? My pup is always with me and especially loves to go woods bumming with me. Now it's my turn to thank you for all that you do.

I've tried this method before and I might have done it a bit too tight, but I don't care for it. I guess for a slower burn it might be good, but I personally think if you had a normal birds nest and added the same amount of birch bark in strips or even whole it would light better. For super dry stuff like you used it worked great, but for damp materials I'd want a more spread out nest and lay. I always enjoy your vids man, thanks.

Man, you have some amazing videos and Rufus looks like such a good, loyal friend! I love where you ask if he smells the fire and he puts his paw on you (@ 6:05). Keep up the great work and thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I started fire craft just recently and I'm finding it quite consuming and so much fun.

I am from Finland and I use juniper bark which has long fibers in it. I put the bark inside the birch bark roll and put the amber in side it and blow. When it ignites I use it like match to start fire and then put it out so I can use it again. The roll doesn't have to be very big.

Nice video to come home to and catch after just getting back in from making my daily fire and harvesting & processing some wood for a bow drill set. I smell like smoke and my hands smell like wood. And I worked up a sweat in the 20's. Today was a good day.

All the stuff you do is great information. It just seems somewhat lacking in very heavy snowfall advice(if you have videos on this I apologize, I am a new sub and have been watching tons of your videos), as a northern Canadian the amount of snow you have dealt with is very minimal, close to our early fall. I would love it if you could show us/me how to start a fire in 2-3 feet of snow, where everything is wet (and usually covered in snow). Thanks in advance, if you get to this comment and bother responding, I think it would be great material for your Canadian, or more northern audience. Thanks again. :)

Yeah I've dun that. I'll grab a tube of birch bark while I walk to my camp sight. & along the way I grad combustibles. The first night I use a small brown paper bag I get at a gas station. Weather I use a paper bad or a role of birch bark the reason I started doing this was; it makes holding combustibles in my hands so much easier. & when I get to camp I don't need to mess around looking for tinder..

Hi Dave, I called you, I have a question on a order for one of the hatchet's you sell, anyhow, the other day at Home Depot, and Lowes carries them too, I bought a Folding Jab Saw, I have multi tool's with Saw's, and I even have the Puma SBG Warden with a Saw, but sometimes those saw's can be a little too small, yet a regular size (7") folding saw might be too large, so I bought a Lenox Jab Saw, and WoW does it work great on wood (branches) to improve my skill's in bushcraft skill, it amazed me how great they are, the size is just a little larger than a multi tool, and yet you can carry them in your pocket, no problemo, anyhow please check it out, and do a video, no video so far on UA-cam, it really cut's great on wood, mine came with two blades, one saw's plaster drywall, the other one wood, metal, plastic, to my surprise, the drywall saw still work's great on wood, check it out, and have a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.

Another way to make fire tubes is to stuff toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls with "dryer lint" from your clothes dryer. I get that everything Dave is using is "natural" materials, but these will work in a pinch. No pun.
