Every time i get to a point where I think I'm pretty good at fire making, you remind me that I still have much to learn.
Thanks as always. :)
That's a big joint Dave!
Great video brother. Is it just me or are the videos with Rufus in them always better? My pup is always with me and especially loves to go woods bumming with me. Now it's my turn to thank you for all that you do.
Thank You David and Rufus
I've tried this method before and I might have done it a bit too tight, but I don't care for it. I guess for a slower burn it might be good, but I personally think if you had a normal birds nest and added the same amount of birch bark in strips or even whole it would light better. For super dry stuff like you used it worked great, but for damp materials I'd want a more spread out nest and lay. I always enjoy your vids man, thanks.
Man, you have some amazing videos and Rufus looks like such a good, loyal friend! I love where you ask if he smells the fire and he puts his paw on you (@ 6:05). Keep up the great work and thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I started fire craft just recently and I'm finding it quite consuming and so much fun.
Yea Dave I think it needs to be said you are one of best bushcraft Teachers in the world .I myself look up to you like you do Mr Sears and want to say Thank You so much for you time you spend on your videos . I live here in s.w. Ohio so and am hoping one day to get over to see your Pathfinder school .any way Thank you great video and Happy New Year to you and your family from me and my family.
Dave you rock the whole community...
I really enjoy your "tool and skill heavy" videos. Keep em' coming!
All the best for 2015!
Very helpful demo Dave! That flame took off really fast too!
P.S. I love watching Rufus hang out and he's especially cute when he gets inquisitive about his dad's projects...lol.
I am from Finland and I use juniper bark which has long fibers in it. I put the bark inside the birch bark roll and put the amber in side it and blow. When it ignites I use it like match to start fire and then put it out so I can use it again. The roll doesn't have to be very big.
Im from Finland too and use it exactly as you do! Very compact and convenient way to start multiple fires in the wild.
When you say amber, is this pine sap rolled into sticks?
Randy Marsh He means ember i assume
Yes I mean ember. Sorry my bad english :)
Brilliant clip. Thanks! Happy New Year from Gothenburg, Sweden!
I'm from finland and I've used that birch bark tube many times to start a fire but it is much smaller than the one you used.
Thanks. I have nothing but river birch and it scatters everywhere while I'm lighting it. This tube method will be great.
I tend to trust a person who loves animals and treats them well. That is a dog raised with love. That dog would probably give its life for you.
I've been learning all year long...Thank you very much.I wish you a Happy New Year from southern Spain.
Awesome Dave, one thing I do is I poke two small holes in the middle of the tube and push a small stick through instead of cordage. but cordage is another option thanks
Very cool!I'll have to try that next time I get out.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ! Great video. thanks Brother
Very interesting Dave, i am going have to try this.
Great video, i'm watching all of your videos and i'm still amazed how many skills do you have. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Slovenia :)
Great video, hey does Rufus have a problem with getting ticks? If so is there any medicine you give him to repel them? My dog is always getting ticks when we go into the wilderness
are you going to make another video series like Journal of the yurts?
Brilliant, it's like a natural version of wetfire.
Ooh, I'm really looking forward to the tanning.
"Fire loves chaos", Amen Brother.
awesome video keep it up dave..
Nice video to come home to and catch after just getting back in from making my daily fire and harvesting & processing some wood for a bow drill set. I smell like smoke and my hands smell like wood. And I worked up a sweat in the 20's. Today was a good day.
All the stuff you do is great information. It just seems somewhat lacking in very heavy snowfall advice(if you have videos on this I apologize, I am a new sub and have been watching tons of your videos), as a northern Canadian the amount of snow you have dealt with is very minimal, close to our early fall. I would love it if you could show us/me how to start a fire in 2-3 feet of snow, where everything is wet (and usually covered in snow). Thanks in advance, if you get to this comment and bother responding, I think it would be great material for your Canadian, or more northern audience. Thanks again. :)
Rufus is becoming one of my favorite K9s.
Pastor Shawn
Lol.An axe sheath or two is a small price to pay for a good dog.
Looking forward to more bids bud. Is there any way you could do a vid on punkwood? That's something I don't see to many cover on YT
will you make a video about the tanning proces?
Rufus sure is a good looking dog.
That's a real cool tip. Thanks I'll add that one to my tool box.
Nice technique!
hey dave what breed is rufus. he seems very even tempered
I really feel bad for that poor dog Dave.....lol
Great video as always.
How old is your lovely dog and what brand is he ? pure or mix ?
Thanks for sharing!
Love the doggie... nothing like being out doors having fun with your best friend by your side. OH you said in one of your carving videos that you had a video about a spoon knife or maybe it was a spoon ax, can you give me a link?
Can you use hockey stick wax instead of fixing wax?
Hey Dave, do you recommend any self refinance schools in Pennsylvania?
Wow...very cool, Dave! Another extremely useful technique for fire starting.
Question... What does one have to do to join the Pathfinder Trade Blanket on Facebook? I'd love to barter some gear I have, but my request was pending for a long time, so I canceled it and resubmitted it. Thanks!
Does your Dog have function out in the woods?
Hey Dave, what type of pants are those
I love Rufus!! I think he's the real boss of the pathfinder school. lol
love the mors cap.
Yeah I've dun that. I'll grab a tube of birch bark while I walk to my camp sight. & along the way I grad combustibles. The first night I use a small brown paper bag I get at a gas station. Weather I use a paper bad or a role of birch bark the reason I started doing this was; it makes holding combustibles in my hands so much easier. & when I get to camp I don't need to mess around looking for tinder..
The sammi tube looks a lot like a really fat cigar. Nice job and keep it up please.
Hi Dave, I called you, I have a question on a order for one of the hatchet's you sell, anyhow, the other day at Home Depot, and Lowes carries them too, I bought a Folding Jab Saw, I have multi tool's with Saw's, and I even have the Puma SBG Warden with a Saw, but sometimes those saw's can be a little too small, yet a regular size (7") folding saw might be too large, so I bought a Lenox Jab Saw, and WoW does it work great on wood (branches) to improve my skill's in bushcraft skill, it amazed me how great they are, the size is just a little larger than a multi tool, and yet you can carry them in your pocket, no problemo, anyhow please check it out, and do a video, no video so far on UA-cam, it really cut's great on wood, mine came with two blades, one saw's plaster drywall, the other one wood, metal, plastic, to my surprise, the drywall saw still work's great on wood, check it out, and have a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.
I love fire :D
Dave, I assume by now Rufus has given up trying to figure who the heck you are talking to when it’s just the two of you out there :-)
Another way to make fire tubes is to stuff toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls with "dryer lint" from your clothes dryer. I get that everything Dave is using is "natural" materials, but these will work in a pinch. No pun.
good video
G'day,
HAPPY NEW YEAR..!
Good stuff, Yay Team...!
;-p
Ciao !
Fire, chaos, entropy. It's the second law of thermodynamics.
Load a tp tube full of your fire starting materials and it will be ready like preloaded bp rounds. Take the hassle out of cold wet fire starts. This a urban tech idea in caae no birch trees in town. I hate it when a idea pops up in my head .
Oops... It's called "How To Make A Wilderness Fire Burrito" ! Lol
That's a good dog.
seen survivor man les stroud make one of them forget what he called it but either way this is only second one i remember being used on a show or video
I have never started a piece of char material with one hit from a flint and steel. I have done it with 2, but never one. That looked almost as easy as a BIC lighter, ha.
Rufus is great dog. So calm and well trained. Wish my sisters mut w's like the.
These Tubes were used in Europe already in the Stone Age.
i call that technique the birch bomb
Rufus is a cool dog, is he a rescue?
