Thanks for this video Dave. It took seven years to get into my UA-cam feed. 😉 In 2004, I made a capote from a green military wool blanket. I used directions from a Mountain Man Craft book. Took me one evening (maybe 3 hours) to complete. Didn’t have a hood, but it did have a rabbit fur collar. I wore it exclusively for nine winters, and had multiple people offer to buy it from me. One offer was for $200. It lasted nine winters in the Appalachian Mountains, and another seven winters off and on in Texas and Tennessee. I finally retired it because all the fringe wore off and it got too many holes in it. I have since made three more capotes from wool blankets (with the hood). I still have one and wear it only when I’m at a rendezvous. A fantastic piece of clothing that isn’t hard to make. This hat would have been a great addition to my first capote.
Easy enough for anyone to do. I really like what you choose to bring to us. The other day, I was trying to think of all the things I've learned from you since I started YouTubing,18 months ago. From in the beginning, when I threw my poplar bark away not knowing about it's tinder value, to more recently buying the right used H&R Single Shot 12ga because I remembered your advice on what to check for on used firearms before buying... and then there's those 100 other things I've learned in between. Man!Thanks for all your videos and your very generous spirit!
Wool army blanket patterns is a brilliant idea for a series Dave. It would be awesome to see others as simple as the hat. You keep coming up with original content, thats what sets your channel apart. :-)
I have full respect for people especially woman and grandma's who retain the skill to knit and sew, as a kid I thought my grandma's knitted sweater was as lame as it gets, now I realize I was wrong and I would cherish a knitted sweater!
Thanks for the inspiration Dave,I now know what to make use with the extra wool blankets I have that I bought cheep.Always wanted a Boreal shirt. Self Reliance at its best.
Seeing you wear that cap reminds me of the old days when you had a military "high & tight" haircut and always wore a bandana on your head. My how times have changed. Nice vid. Thanks.
thanks for giving me things to make that i can get my daughters involved in its hard to find things for daddy and teenage girls to do that involves something we both enjoy
Great video Dave! Quick question. Could you make char cloth out of any wool scraps from this project? I've seen in some of your other videos you use cotton, thats if I remember correctly. Thanks
***** Sorry I went by the audio, humm sounded just like my pc. I was wondering how you blended green screen and your footage so well lol. My appologies yet again.
Its good to get a curved tailors ruler for projects like this including a knife sheath. Helps a lot for perfection. Get one on ebay from china for a few bucks.
Love the video Dave. I would love to know how you make that hunting shirt that you're wearing. I really like the look of it and will give one a go myself. Would you be able to do a video on how to make one? Cheers, Jack
***** Is Boonesboro a company or a place? I got the wool pullover from Duluth like you wore a lot a few years ago and I love it. That thing is awesome and should last a life time.
A little bigger, and you can definitely have a wool hat with upturned edge, or bigger and can be pulled down for a neck covering (and most especially an ear -and- ear lobe protector). Robin Hood and his band of men in green hats ....
Not sure if Dave will see this but I am wondering was there a big difference between army blankets and Navy blankets? I remember as a child my dad always had really thick grey wool blankets from the Navy. Damn things were so itchy as a kid but they sure kept you warm at night in some Wisconsin winters. anyway just wondering about this. If it helps the blankets I'm mentioning were probably from the 70's to late 80's cause when I was in in the sub service ours were different.
Dave, Love the video as always. Again, I'd love to known where you got the shirt you been wearing in all these videos. I been asking, but then I never get an email telling me there is a reply to my question. I am starting to wonder if you have answered and I just haven't got the email saying there is a reply?
Hey Dave, do you you prefer the Duluth bushcrafter pack, or the Duluth pathfinder pack? And would it be possible to strap either of those to an Alice pack frame? Thanks in advance!!!
haha, coureur des bois ;) I like these little videos. I make alot of things you show on your channel. I made a Kuksa, and axe sheath yesterday and alot more. I think the next thing is that Saami repair kit. It looks useful and cool at the same time :) thanks
totally enjoyed this hat making video what was that french word you used and what does it mean. liked your scissors. i live in the city and i see homeless folks sleeping on the sidewalk with what looks like a big blanket made from some sort of compressed felt?. also would bankline run thru a modern machine {singer pfaff etc; thanks:
This video was more directed towards self reliance. If you know how to make a hat you'll never have to buy one again. I like that about Dave he teaches you how to make stuff rather than just saying "buy this from my site"
Hey Dave, is the site down or something? I went to order a Jeff White knife and it's unavailable. I checked some others and they are as well. I apologize that this has nothing to do with the video, just curious.
Thanks for this video Dave. It took seven years to get into my UA-cam feed. 😉

Dave, I'm really enjoying these loom, weaving, and sewing type videos you've been doing lately. Thanks, as always, for sharing.

Nice hat man. I always love your ideas. I might make one if I can get over cutting into a wool blanket. Two thumbs up on this one.

Pimp........and its OD....Nice
I have found that tying off shirts at the sleeves works great as a common man hat and has room to cover the back of the neck that can be tucked in
Very good Dave, something simple and super efficient.
A hug !!!
Its the Canterbury Elf! Lol. Another nice clear instructional video thanks Dave
I bought Army blankets directly from the supplier in Rhode Island. They would only sell them in 6 packs, so this is very useful.
Excellent Dave.
Great video!!! I will be looking for the other videos from Army wool blankets.
That hat looks warm. Thanks for the vid.
Another Awesome tutorial brother! I will definitely make one of these. Looking forward to more info on the other items you mentioned.
Why can't I find a man like this? You rock!

I like it, looks authentic…
I would like to send a couple pics of the wool hat I made a few years back that I have recently added squirrel skins to. But this site won't let me.
Very nicely done. I'm so going to make me one now😊
and it's a snappy wardrobe accessory
Cool hat - I want to make one with ear flaps.
Would be interesting to watch you make a hat in some sort of loom fashion.
Great tip. Gracias. Feliz Año 2015.
Looks like a Robin Hood hat. I like it.
Could you possibly use old wool socks for the material instead of a wool blanket?
Who needs rap music when there is Dave!

Hum, good project to teach a kid the basics of sewing.
Robin Hood hat. All you need now is the feather! LOL

Hey Dave, do you you prefer the Duluth bushcrafter pack, or the Duluth pathfinder pack? And would it be possible to strap either of those to an Alice pack frame?

Finished product looks a lot like Robin Hood! Old school-still cool.

Hey Dave are you gonna make a video on who won the giveaway?
Great video, you should do a video on making a fur hat next
Hi Dave. That hat looks like a robin hood hat.

cool project
nice hat
Outstanding
want to make a hunting shirt for sure!
I appreciate your teaching this, but just find a good supplier of wool watch caps and sell them on your website. People will buy them from you.
We already sell them
This video was more directed towards self reliance. If you know how to make a hat you'll never have to buy one again. I like that about Dave he teaches you how to make stuff rather than just saying "buy this from my site"
Love you Dave but you made a Peter Pan hat lol
You could have made a phrygian style cap out of 1 piece of that blanket.
Heck yeah.
what # bank line do you usually use for projects like this?
Ya looked like an elf at the end there man!
At 6'3" and 350 lbs, I believe I will need at least 3 wool blankets. IMHO.
Right!
I hate blankets. What do I want cold, Nipples or feet?
Aren't you worried about the warmed up bank line getting into your hair?
looking like Robin Hood there with hat on
can you show he to make shirt and trousers please
Now get your bow you made in the summer and your set
Hahaha you reminded me of Robin Hood
Who won?
