Here's Why Miss Peggy DISAPPEARED Without a Trace from The Andy Griffith Show

- It really seemed like Miss Peggy as portrayed by actress Joanna Moore might be the one for Sheriff Andy Taylor. And yet, after four measly episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show", she disappeared without further mention. Here is my thinking around the character's sudden departure from the program.

This video is not intended for children under the age of 14. Quite frankly, kids...I'm just some random old dude talking about nostalgic TV and movie stuff from a really long time ago and I highly doubt that it is going to interest you.

Peggy was the best... FOR Andy, FOR Mayberry. Her voice made my heart melt when she said "IAN-DEE" for Andy. Can you imagine if Peggy and Barney remained on the show for 10 yrs? Wow!
I SO WISH they had!!
Peggy was the girl for Andy! She was a sweet Southern lady who was smart, too. I have a feeling she could make a great leg of lamb, Andy's favorite dish..
😀
He likes TV dinners too
she makes the best fried chicken with the skin on
Peggy was my favorite of all of Andy's girlfriends. Helen was probably my least favorite. She seemed always to be mad or jealous at Andy for something.
Agree 100%
Loved Ellie. Adored Peggy.
Helen was a great big ol’ MEHHHH
True! I thought it was me!
Well, he didn't exactly get off on the right foot with Helen, giving Opie the impression that he didn't have to take any part of his education seriously.
I never cared for the Helen character at all, she was very selfish in my view. Ellie and Peggy were awesome, but Peggy was my choice.
Andy Griffith carried on an affair with Aneta corsault (Helen Crump) from Day 1 of her stepping in to her role on the show,it lasted for over 30 yrs. Andy Griffith wasn't as nice and wholesome as people may think.
Joanna Moore, who played Miss Peggy, had an extraordinary singing voice. I am surprised she didn't have a singing career. Her voice was so beautiful!
Yes her voice was similar to patsy cline
@@stevenmyers2235 I know the reason she disappeared. Joanna had trouble with hearing and had to have a operation. I have written more above in a separate comment.
@@dee-smart not true
@@letsgobrandon6281 Not a intelligent reply, is it. "Not true" but no follow up as to WHY it is not true. My information is out there on the imdb website under her name. Where is your information that it is incorrect?
I know!! She sang a song when she and Andy were sitting out on his porch. Don’t remember the name of the song, but JOANNA SANG IT BEAUTIFULLY!!! Love her voice!
Miss Peggy was perfect in every way! She was smart, beautiful, assertive, and that voice, OH THAT VOICE, could make me want to lose weight and write bad checks!
YEP!
Oh you are funny!! I love your sense of humor!! ❤❤❤ thank you for the laugh!!
Out of all Andy's lady friends, I liked Peggy the most for him. She was pretty, witty, sassy, funny, etc. Ellie seemed too young & frankly, Helen Krump was far too boring.
agree with you 100%
Yolanda Grady - I too agree with you. Peggy was a beauty and had a nice accent. Ms Krump was a skank compared to her. I also feel that Helen Krump was belligerent, demanding and judgmental. Did I mention that I thought Helen was a skank ?
Ellie first for me, and Miss Peggy second. But I get the point about her being young. Helen was THE WORST! She was having an affair with Andy.
Yes Helen was a Yawn thats for Sure!
Exactly and yes Helen was a bore
Miss Peggy by far was the best and prettyist, by far more then Helen crump
Joanna Moore was gorgeous!
Yes Miss Peggy was perfect!!
Helen Crump was pretty but boy what a temper!
Peggy was absolutely without a doubt the best fit for Andy! She was funny, smart, sing, had the southern accent, and was just down-to-earth and fit better than any other girlfriend Andy ever had on the show. They should have kept her for the rest of the entirety of the show. That was really the biggest mistake that Andy and the producers made with the show in my opinion.
There are a lot of folks who feel the same way that you do, Jeffrey!
I think she had it all. Perfect match. I'll never understand what happened there.
Absolutely agree! I would have much rather seen and heard Ms Peggy on the show rather than Helen Crump.
@@jbrannon509 They should have dumped Crump.
Second only to Griffith's change of heart to stay on the show after Knotts figured he'd have to go elsewhere.
Sha also had the closest relationship with Opie, it seemed. In one episode, Opie is terrified that Andy won’t love him anymore because of her. This leads to a warm scene where Andy tells Opie exactly how he feels about both of them.
That episode Opie was very caniving for such a young child and in today's terms, he " cockblocked " his own father. He even got away with it because he pulled Andy's heartstrings back in a time period when kids got their asses beat for far less.
Joanna Moore should have been given her own sitcom. She had all the charm, beauty and talent that Barbara Eden or Elizabeth Montgomery had. Given the right comedic vehicle, she could have been huge. She was clearly the best thing that ever happened to the Andy Griffith Show.
I totally Agree. Miss her. God Rest her soul.
I'm okay with all you wrote about Joanna save for the last line. I'd say Don Knotts was the BEST thing that ever happened to TAGS - with Ernest T Bass (Howard Morris) the best sub-supporting actor on the show. But, Joanna was definitely talented, and beautiful to boot!
@Acoustic Shadow I agree with the first part but my least favorite shows are those with Ernest T Bass. I do realize what a significant role that was but for some reason I just never cared for Ernest T's character.
@@acousticshadow4032 I remember Earnest T! He was quite an unusual character. Actually that show had some of the most unique characters on TV. Almost makes me want to go watch some old reruns. Everyone loved Barney!
... and of course Eden and Montgomery were the only two actresses in the world at that time
With someone like Peggy, I'll never understand why Helen Krump made the grade. I thought her a nice enough looking gal, but the personality she adopted on the show was just awful. Anyway, Peggy was gorgeous, and her singing was heavenly!
Because Andy loved the actress who played Helen. Ask her 3 times to marry him. They've said Andy loved her for 30 years.
@@michellehoskins5624 Yep. He had bad taste in Women. LOL
Oh Jesus Christ…now I know. Peggy was soooooo evenly matched for Andy. Lighthearted, carefree, mischevious, flustered Andy on several occasions.. .and beautiful as a butterfly under a swift sunrise to boot! He always seemed really relaxed around her. And somehow Helen (who I will confess had a FEW good moments); comes and steals Andy away.
Peg was hot but Joanna Moore was a "hot mess". Drugs and alcohol abuse made her unstable. Too bad she couldn't keep it together and stop the heinous Helen from being Andy's steady. Helen Crump was awful. Andy was so henpecked.
@@FLStelth it’s a whole another ballpark, but in the earlier black and white episodes, I’ve always felt Andy had a gentler disposition, one not as serious as the later ones, and Peggy just fit in so well with this…sort of an aggressive gentleness that went perfectly with his mild persona. Helen, who came off as EXTREMELY vindictive, turned him into. . .puddy?
I forget the exact episode…but it was when Peggy showed up and Opie lit the candles. The chemistry Andy and her achieved in that short time was cinema level quality. Ooh to rewind the clock.
This is wonderful, thanks Dave. Peg was my favorite of “Andy’s ladies”. I knew her character’s arc was a short one but I had no idea it was only 4 episodes. A testament to her strong presence that it seemed longer.
You're welcome, Denis! And thanks for commenting!
I spend a little of every evening in Mayberry. It helps keep the pain of the world and country news at bay. And makes me feel a little teeny bit like I could close my eyes and walk straight into Mayberry... where Fathers are their son’s best friend and advocate... and sons respond to being told something by their sons respond with “sure Paw”! I am old enough to remember children respecting their parents because they had parents who loved them and did the best they could. Remember it fondly.
I too loved Miss Peggy. She had the most honestly open and affectionate personality. She was self assured but not self centered. She was lovely and loving.... and there was a sweet playfulness that felt good and warm for Andy. I was sad that she left the show. It must have been her pregnancy. I am so sad to hear that Ryan O’Neal didn’t appreciate her and drove her into depression and that she died alone and unhappy. Such a lovely soul. Rest In Peace sweet Peggy.
Christy Crissinger i know exactly what you mean! I watch MeTV because its clean and Mayberry is somewhat soothing in this chaotic world.
My husband and I watch Andy Griffith show every night and we love guessing which episode within the first few seconds. It is very nice to go back in time where things were better in so many ways.
Me, too, although I listen with earphones while falling asleep!
I do the same. There are other channels also in my area. Grit, Ant and fetv to name a few. Causes me to reminisce how life was so more peaceful and less trashy
Christy Crissinger she didn’t die alone!! Where did you hear that? Her devoted daughter Tatum was with her!!
Down in the valley bye her was the most loveliest voice I literally fell in love with. So underrated so beautiful, ❤️💜💕.
I know!! I know!! BEAUTIFUL VOICE!!
I've always said that Peggy was absolutely the one for Andy - perfect. Never did like Helen at all. ... From everything I've read & heard, Moore's personal life probably played the biggest part in her disappearing from Mayberry. Her marriage to O'Neal was tumultuous to say the least. Actually, her entire life was rather full of tragedy from a young age. It's just too bad her time on the Andy show was so short considering the fact that she enjoyed that working experience more than any other, according to an interview she gave about it. She'll definitely always be my favorite of Andy's girls, by far.
Great comments, Cara!
Do you know when Ryan O'Neal started boozing and doing drugs? One of the websites about the actress Tatum O'Neal reported that after Tatum's mom (Joanna Moore) had separated, divorced from Ryan; her mom started dating again. And one of her mom's boyfriends, according to Tatum, tried to rape her. Tatum also claimed that one of her dad's friends did rape her and that illegal drugs were commonplace in the O'Neal household.
No one seemed to like Helen Crump (Aneta Corsault) except Andy. The reason she had such a silly last name is because she was only supposed to be in one episode. (I think the one where Andy makes amends after first dissing American History - "Andy Discovers America.") But, legend has it that Andy Griffith fell for Ms Corsault, and thus Andy Taylor fell for Miss Crump. hey.. I did think Helen looked awesome with that short, feminist hair style, and there were about 3 episodes where she danced, a bit, and the lady had moves... as well as a figure.
I loved Joanna Moore! Was sad to see her off the show. Loved her voice and her whole body would wriggle when she laughed. Sexy and beautiful she was..:) ♥️
Tatum wrote that their mom left them alone for extended times. They have to eat dry dog food to survive and she had boyfriends that were often teenagers. Just think she could have made her kids candlelight dinners too! Tatum was with her when she died. Meh, I still Love Peggy. She's not here to defend herself.
She was a beautiful woman, it truly makes me sad to know how her life turned out.
Joanna Moore played on 4 episodes between 1962 and 1963. Tatum ONeal was born November 5, 1963. A pregnant Joanna Moore on Andy''s show would have been scandalous.
I think you may be on to something.
You did more homework than the robotic voice that made this video.
They did use to be able to work around women being pregnant on shows, like having them wear coats and never shooting them below the chest. I think they did that with Lucy.
LostInMySpace Andy would have been proud to put a bun in Peg’s oven.
@@mikeymac02 Exactly. How annoying!
Peggy wasn't the rich one it was her father. If you remember he bought her a nice fancy car which thanks to Barney he help get Andy in the frame of mind that they were not going to be good together because of her rich taste. They even went to a fancy French restaurant and she ordered escargot for both of them but Andy would not eat it.
Miss Peggy was always my favorite of Andy's girlfriends.
@Aaron Digby Aneta Corsaut was quite beautiful. See her in 'The Blob' with Steve McQueen. 1958.
She was the most likable of Andy's girlfriends, and to me Helen was just a little too up tight .
Dave Sundstrom, thanks so much for uploading this! I thought maybe it was just ME who was a Miss Peggy fan. I could've said word-for-word what you did in these 4 minutes and 11 seconds, but you saved me the trouble! I absolutely loved Joanna Moore as Miss Peggy. She was a beautiful, rich, smart nurse that I loved seeing on the show in the few episodes she was in. And YES!.....she's the one who got away! Andy didn't go for her because she was rich(?!?) and I think he felt she might've been scheming to get him to propose marriage. But even Opie loved her...she was the complete package! Andy was such a fool sometimes......
In reality, I have a feeling Joanna Moore didn't want the obligations of being a regular on a sitcom as she and Ryan were just starting a family. By the way....seeing them at 3:00, weren't they a great-looking couple? Such a lovely, lovely lady!
She was absolutely gorgeous!!!
Yes she was...............

Sad that her addiction stopped her career

Your comments are all spot on. The writers seemed to portray Miss Peggy as the one who went to great lengths to develop a relationship with Andy. Yet sadly they wrote Andy's response to be one of indifference not appreciating the gem that came into his life.
She was absolutely beautiful, and that southern accent made her the TOTAL package. Sad her real life was mired in such unhappiness, addiction, abuse, etc. She also had a beautiful singing voice ... remember her on the porch with Andy & Opie.
Yeah is so sad. I often wonder if these celebrities ever really feel loved. The beautiful lady’s that is. I know I’ve heard a few of them seemed to never have found real love
Beautiful southern woman
... She just had a personality that was sooooo attractive and funny and I would have loved to have seen her more
I always liked Peggy the best and Ellie ran a very close second. Peggy was smart, gracious, talented, and I loved her southern accent which fit right in. I remember the episode where Aunt Bea went out of town and Peggy fixed Andy and Opie a nice dinner by candlelight. She did this out of the goodness of her heart.
Even though she came from wealth it never appeared in her warm and charming personality. In the end, as I remember, Andy bristled at her access to finer things but Peggy never seemed to flaunt her wealth or put on airs. For me, Helen always seemed distant and reserved. She would not have been someone I would have warmed up to immediately. I think Andy let a really fine woman get away.
Peggy was great!
Maybe that was due to their real-life affair? She didn't want to seem too into her character? I dunno. Helen was beautiful. Peggy was fun and darling and she could cook. Helen couldn't.
I'm watching this episode now. I love her with Andy
@@roxyloveslucy IMO Corsaut never had a chance of being anywhere near Moore's league when it came to beauty.
She was gorgeous!! The best look girl Andy had!! Hellen crump was ,well hard to like, I put that nicely lol
TheRonnie63 I agree...she was Bodacious Good Looking! great actor as well. She was just All Around great.
TheRonnie63 I totally agree, Helen had a temper and a mean streak
Bombshell
Helen was not attractive.
@@Bob31415 yep you so right
Moore's voice was so unique and so wonderful with that lilting accent.
Peg "Joanna Moore" was a stage actress, and musical artist, she also appeared in movies with Elvis. She was a guest star performer, on many tv shows. Her and Griffith did a few musical numbers together, so he asked her to guest star on the show. She later did a few albums and backup to Andy's gospel songs. Google doesn't write down all her amazing performances, my grandparents were really into Andy Griffith and they recorded an interview off the TV.
Native of Georgia. Saw her on various 60’s shows.
Moore was a talented actress. She did have a great voice and accent. Mayberry would have been lucky to have her as a regular cast member. I always like her and Miss Donahue better than the Helen Crump character. Miss Crump was too bland for me. She lacked a spark.
Seriously the Music She could make with just the word "Andy"!😍B.W.
I wouldn´t say it was spark she lacked===she lacked what a really good woman has===compassion, tenderness, understanding all coupled with a calm way of handling problems and just enough ¨spice¨ to act a little disturbed when she learned Andy got his black eye in the presence of another woman. I´d say she was a lot like my wife so I know Peggy was a great woman, wife and mother to Opie as in my opinion I had the greatest wife any man could want. So would Andy if Peggy had stayed on. One more thing, Helen did have spark----she was always blowing up and ripping into ANdy in a most cruel way. Very unlike a good woman with no class.
Never could stand Helen Crump. She was too dramatic and hysterical.
I liked Peggy, I liked Ellie and I liked Helen Crump. I don't think Helen was hysterical.
I liked Helen Crump.
Helen was pissed off too much
@@patrickperalta59 Me too.People who don't like Helen are rediculous. It was the writers who wrote her as she was portrayed.Th show wanted tension with Andy and his girl.
I agree, JoAnn; Helen's character was extremely over dramatic and hysterical.... While I think they made her this way to somehow fit in with the whole women's lib thing that was going on at the time, some people must have complained, because later, the show seemed to tone down her character but sadly, this just made her look too fake... I am in no way blaming the actress (I guess they say actor for both men and women, these days) but rather, the writers...
Joanna Moore struggled with alcohol and drugs and was often late on set and held up production. Andy Griffith and other producers of the show provided her with multiple warnings, but Joanna’s drug use had a powerful grip on her that she could not overcome. She had no contract with the Andy Griffith show and they just stopped requesting her appearance. A very talented actress that eventually lost everything and had to be supported by her children.
Great...but truly sad...info, Steve. Thanks for sharing!
Well that's liked Helen ( Aneta) and that's who Andy Griffith fell in love with on and off the show
Dave I wish there were shows like The Andy Griffith Show on TV now. Unfortunately there is so much focus on so-called ''Reality TV'' now. Many of those types of shows and other shows on TV now are very sleazy and their subject matter is definitely not something suitable for children to watch.
In today's world Andy and Barney would be lovers.
It was a great show & is still timeless. When this world starts getting me down, I watch Andy Griffith show. Always makes me wish we could all go back to that time of history, when things were so much simpler then. No worries like we have today. I know they had worries back then, but nothing like the worries we have now. Watching it again & again helps me to temporarily step back & catch my breath so I can deal with our present time.
They are junk shows haven't watched a new show in years
She is buried America’s Georgia 60miles south west of Macon
I was Andy every day on Netflix and Amazon app Al's dukes of hazzard on the Amazon app.
there was also another county nurse played by julie / julia adams from the creature from the black lagoon who wanted to give rafe hollister a shot. this character / this nurse / Mary Simpson was also played by sue ann langdon in the andy griffith show episode 'three's a crowd'.
Yes! Both are 1 time episodes for Mary the county nurse, that I love to watch.
Never cared for Julie Adams. Couldn't stand Aneta Corseaut. Joanna Moore was sophisticated and glamorous. I guess I liked Elinor Donahue best. She seemed the most "Mayberry" out of all the girlfriends.
Sue Ann Langdon was a hoot! She seemed quite the wild child on Johnny Carson's show. She toned it down for TAGS.
Adams & Langdon were off-putting. Adams had those worried eyebrows. No chemistry with Griffith. Langdon seemed phony, tho very pretty. Luminous Jan Shutan had loads of chemistry with Andy, but the producers/writers gave her a very unattractive boyfriend & a fast exit off the show. What a missed opportunity!
I loved her character. I thought they had great chemistry. I never knew she was Tatum’s mom! Wow!
O
Me neither, both were great!
They look alike!
and isn't it funny that she named her son Griffin (in real life with Ryan O'Neal?!!) i always wanted Andy to end up with Miss Peggy!!! so much nicer and warmer...Helen was a bit cold!
Ne meither.
Yeah Dave, i did want to comment on Peggy (Joanna Moore). I'm very sure she vanished from the show because of Andy Griffith being very difficult to work with. It's very telling that 2 of these women just just disappeared after only a short time on this show. I really liked Peggy on this show who was far more beautiful than the other 2 by FAAAAAR !!! I just never liked Ellie & i don't even know how Helen "CRUMP" even got a spot on this show because & i REALLY couldn't stand her but Peggy........OH YEAH.......she was the one for sure !!!!!
no Joanne Moore was difficult Not Andy Griffith
Ol' Aneta jumped right into the sack upon meeting Griffith. The other ladies were not as "friendly," free with their favors or frisky as "Helen Crump."
Miss Peggy was my absolute favorite I loved her personality and voice accent Andy screwed up letting Miss Peggy get away.. I watch reruns daily and nightly but when Miss Peggy is on its my favorite shows..
Maybe this is why she had to leave...In the early 1960s, Moore became deaf as a result of otosclerosis, which her doctor said resulted from a deposit of calcium in her middle ear. Moore said that she had to read lips to understand what people were saying. An operation restored her hearing in 1962.
In reality, Ms. Moore was an alcoholic and drug user. And she had to put with with O'Neal's hot temper. She died broke and alone. RIP Joanna Moore.
DAMN......what a mess......that is sad ain't it?.......what a BUMMER, i couldn't stand o'neal's hot tempered nasty ass. I really wished Joanna had NEVER met that CREEP !!!!!!!
Bo Nichols I do too.
According to her daughter in a interview ,her mom passed away in her arms. The last thing I remember seeing her in was a episode of The Waltons as the lady running the rooming house John stayed in while working away from home.
thank you for that john, now i'm going to try to find that walton episode on youtube & watch it because i really liked joanna moore on andy griffith & feel STRONGLY they should have picked her over any of the others because i could not stand elleeeeee or "CRUMP CRUMB". it's very sad also joanna's sad lifes story, she should have NEVER married "hot temper head" ryan o'neal but i think joanna had even more inner demons than just the aweful experience with the "hothead", she was bothered & disturbed about life & it's very sad her whole life story & i can really relate to it as well since i am just as or MORE VERY disturbed & bothered about life........sometimes i really wonder myself HOW i am still here.....life is VERY CRUEL, UNfair & HARD !!!!!!!
@@bonichols8511 you will find her in season three the departure
I loved Miss Peggy ! I always wondered what happened to her . I thought she was great on the show . Even now when I watch the re runs and its an episode with her I am glad . She had so much about her you had to love. Her eyes were beautiful and she is GORGEOUS ! But she also was a good actress and played a great part on the show. I never really cared for miss krump . sorry Miss Krump
I rarely agree with every view of a narrator but must in the case ofJoanna Moore. She was by far the best catch for Andy and would have made an excellent mother for Opie. She excelled in many things yet was every bit a lady. Her melodic voice and soft accent was captivating. The same poor judgement that let Don Knotts go made the same mistake with her.
Couldn't agree with you more except about Knotts. His leaving was his own decision and because of his movies and I'm sure the producers hated hearing that.
If you google her, you will find that at first she was battling alcoholism, and later the drugs complicated that addiction. She basically committed professional suicide as far as her career went. Such a pretty lady with incredible demons that she was battling. R.I.P., Joanna Moore, for you are at peace now
Ryan O’Neil was the reason Joanna Moore got into a state of depression. He seem to have knack of doing that with women he was involved with. Miss Peggy was sweet and perfect for Andy Taylor as they seemed to have great chemistry together. Helen Crump was a very bitter and mean spirited character which I didn’t care for. A shame that Miss Peggy was written out very quickly on the show.
Helen Crump and Thelma Lou were both ball busters...
Agent....I TOTALLY AGREE i couldn't stand "crump" she ALWAYS made me want to throw up & i NEVER EVER figured out how she ever landed that role PERIOD & your sooo right she was a VERY "BITTER" , "MEAN", "SPIRITED" character & damn the day Joanna EVER got involved with o'neal's nasty hot tempered ass i couldn't stand that "CREEP". It's all very sad with Joanna isn't it?
Helen & Thelma Lou sure didn't like those two brassy blondes with the low-cut cleavage who showed up once in awhile from Mt. Pilot....they called Andy "Doll" and Barney "Bernie"
yeah i know bill & 4 "miss "crump" i was THRILLED theze chicks from mt.pilot did piss her off cause i could NOT STAND helen "crump" & NEVER will understand how she EVER got the part !!!!!!!!!.........."HI DOLL"
Joanna Moore's pregnancy may have been a part of why she didn't continue in 1963, she became the mother of Tatum O'Neal in Nov. '63.
Joanna Moore was born in a tiny little town called Parrot, Georgia. When she was a small child her parents were killed in a car accident. She was adopted by a prominent family in my hometown of Americus, GA. All of this happened before my time so of course I never knew her. I got this info from a couple of "little old ladies" who were friends of the family that adopted her. I have recently noticed how many men and women on TV shows back then were single. Most of the cast of TAGS were.
But no matter, I still love the show and wish I could invent a "time and place" machine and spend the rest of my life in Mayberry.
I'm from Dawson, born there. My Grandpa & Grandma use to square dance in Parrott. I live in Leesburg now. Just funny running into someone from our little corner on this big web.😂

Loved 'Paper Moon'.😍
This is interesting tidbit. I know where Parrot is.
not anywhere near Elinor Donahue
Joanne Moore was a beautiful woman and a terrific actress. She played in four episodes of the Alfred Hitchcock Show, more times than any other actor or actress. In fact, very few got an opportunity to play in more than one episode...and she played in FOUR ! Mr. Hitchcock was obviously very impressed by her; and he was the top director in Hollywood (the big screen). Enough said.
Dick York, the first Darren, in Bewithed, starred in the Alfred Hitchcock TV show, around 3 times! He was good! Loved him, as an actor! And yes, Joanna Moore had it all!! Loved her too!
Two women was perfect for Andy was Peggy and Helen all Rest In Peace 💜💜💙🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Andy couldn't handle a strong independent woman, Helen was what we got and I personally think Peggy or Ellie were both much better picks.
Why all the bashing of Helen? The one that should be bashed is O'Neil! Helen did the best should could. O'Neil was a bum.
@@sjjcws Helen had nothing to do with O'Neil. It was Moore that was with O'Neil.

Good show, great cast, excellent script and settings. Whatever happened in the background was irrelevant to me, as I still revel in the fantasy of the Mayberry world and find a few episodes a week keeps me hopeful and positive towards a future has yet to happen.
Thanks Perry White, agreed.
Perry as much as we'd all like to have a Mayberry life thats never going to happen. In the "good ole' days" [the 50's] Gods hand of blessing was on America b/c as a whole ppl hadnt rejected Jesus Christ. Since then [60's on] the U.S has removed God from the places where He was once honored and turned to embrace: lgbt, abortion, gay lifestyle, false religions, rampant divorce, "theory" of evolution, porn, on/on. Read Romans 1:18-32; that will explain things.

Add to that the fact that those who play these parts support the very things that God is against. Andy Griffith was very "pro-democrat"...Ron Howard..."The Da Vinci Code" which is against Biblical Christianity, Jim Nabors [homosexual]. Another show that promoted "family morals"...The "Cosby Show"...need I say more about him or Lisa Bonet. Search into the lives of these cast members. Come on Perry. You're just pissed because neither Lois Lane ever got in the sack with you. Both were hotties in the time.
Peggy was 1,000 times better than Helen Frump. Helen had a terrible temper and was insanely jealous. She was also bad to pout and this was annoying, too. Peggy would have been a perfect match for Andy.
Helen was the worst of all Andys girlfriends.
But Andy liked her alot..., on and off the stage. Similar personalities.
@@garymosher8180 You're right. Peggy was a much better choice, or Mary the nurse (Julie Adams). Even Thelma Lou would have been a good choice (Barney could have found someone else, such as Juanita). But Andy had a lot of pull in that show and it was his choice, I'm sure.
Dave, you forgot about Opie and his dark side with Peggy. Remember how he looked when he faked being sick so Andy would cancel a date with Peggy? Ron Howard went to the dark side several times on that episode. Remember the note from Peggy he kicked into the trash can so Andy wouldn't know about the change in plans to meet Peggy??? I always liked her much better than Helen the Grump Crump.
SOOOO RIGHT !!!!!!!
Agree!
YES! I could never stand Helen!!
sambaritone she was grumpy wasn't she and ohhhhh so jealous. Remember the Fun Girls? lol. Helen was smoking at the ears and I think there was even an episode of a distant female cousin Andy housed up on her visit in Mayberry. Even THAT sent Helen into a tizzy. I guess Andy liked the jealous type. Eh, she just wasn't as pretty as the other 2, but Peggy was a doll, and the accent was an added bonus while Eleanor Donahue was just a pretty face with a loving charm. Either way, they both had that flare about em that Helen was without. I've always heard about the hard relationship with Aunt Bee, so maybe Andy Griffith was a hard man to work with if u were female in a time where women were coming of age from the typical stereotype of that time, and perhaps he was more old fashioned to the idea of a woman's place. Who knows? I never met the man, but I'm still a fan of the show nonetheless. Besides, I'm more of a Don Knotts kinda guy.
68 mopar, I agree! And Don Knotts definitely made the show, the best are the first couple of seasons!
She was possibly my favorite of Andy's girlfriends for both personality and straight up looks. Goodness gracious. So pretty. And that accent...
YEAH BOY !!!!!
I agree. She was genuine and real.
Absolutely!
With no Don Knott's there would be no Mayberry
There weren't so many really likeable characters introduced in the color episodes.
Ikr. When Warren came to set I stopped watching.
When Don Knotts left the show, I quit watching. Without him the show wasn't worth it as he was half the attraction & half the talent.
I agree! He was by far the best part of that show!!
(btw...no apostrophe in Knotts)
I thought Don Knotts was way too stupid for any woman to take seriously. I can see why he never married.
I have read that Elinor Donohue left the program because she felt there was no "chemistry" betwixt Sheriff Andy and Miss Ellie. but she also left abruptly at the seeming height of the relationship ... the same for the two Marys, though they lasted nowhere nearly as long. Quite frankly, in my opinion there was never any "chemistry" betwixt Andy and any of his girlfriends ... the whole thing is quite a mystery!
Great comments, hepzibel!
There is a magazine article from those times where Joanna said "she had just finished doing four episodes for the Griffith Show and she was off to England for a needed break. There is also talk that she was having ear trouble around this time and temporarily lost the hearing in one ear. Joanna had many, many issues as detailed by her daughter, Tatum. It could be that the Griffith people were starting to notice problems, i.e. substance abuse and cut her loose even though she did have terrific screen presence.
I also think Peggy was THE ONE that got away. I also think Andy was intimidated by her on many points. I also think she was very beautiful and her voice was to dream about. I had read somewhere a few years ago that, sadly, she had a drug problem. It had been suggested that this issue interfered with her role and it was decided to let her move on. Peggy was my favorite on the show without question.
He NEVER talked about Opies mother. Weird
Hmmm. Maybe somebody needs to drag Meyers Lake. Barney left town. Aunt Bee had motive. Gomer left for the Marines sudden like. Helen lasted. Was she in town all that time before?
Oh my goodness. You may be onto something! 🙂
I think your right. Better drag the lake. Wait a minute....maybe the people of Mayberry are cannibals..had them a bbq!!!!
Secret's in the sauce!
+TractorMonkey with JL I was thinking the same thing!!! Fried Green Tomatoes lol
Those school teachers can be Black Widows. How better to get your man, than to eliminate the competition. Hmmmm...... Why didn’t Sheriff Andy search for them. The oldest reason on earth. Hanky Panky in the furnace room at the school. Picture Helen in leather with high heels and a whip. Yup. That is what happened.
Elinor Donahue didn’t have enough chemistry with Andy Griffith and she said that herself. As far as the actress Aneta Corsaut, who played Helen Crump, I read that she and Andy Griffith had an affair.
Joanna Moore was Tatum O’Neal’s mother.
Thanks for sharing Lee!
Before reading the comments I thought I was the only person who couldn't stand Helen Crump.
Peggy played the final 4 episodes of 1962. She was also pregnant at the beginning of 1963 in real life, and that couldn't be explained on the show, so she was written off. She was by far the most suitable character for Opie's stepmom. Makes you wonder where the show would have gone had there been a 1 year gap between her first appearance and her real life pregnancy so that they could have married and built up the new baby coming in.
The Andy Griffith Show was never supposed to be about a nuclear family like the Cleavers. It was about the relationships between Andy and Barney, and between Andy and Opie. Having Andy get married would have destroyed those relationships because his wife would have become the most important person in his life. Even with Helen, Andy was more like a pal than a boyfriend.
I think Andy wanted someone compatible with his personality. Someone he felt attracted to and the chemistry would show on the show and Miss Crump fit his demands.
In all fairness,Andy did not fire Joanna and Elinor. Joanna had health problems, marriage and a baby. Elinor left on her own because she didn't feel the fit. Miss Crump fit in because she loved being a teacher which was a good story line. I never felt that Andy was supposed to marry. Aunt Bea was so important to their lives. I am so thankful that every part was played so well.....such a wonderful time in my life!
Peggy should have cast as Andy's PERMANENT girlfriend!!!!! She brought so much to the show. They really lost out on a perfect match.
I don.t think Joanna Moore wanted kissing scenes with Andy Griffith
I can't understand why we didn't see more of Joanna Moore in movies. I've seen her in many tv programs, always good, and so beautiful. She def should've stay w/Andy. She was the best he could do, ha ha!! I actually liked Karen second, the skeet shootin gal!!
Cousin Karen was played by Gail Davis who had her own tv series years earlier playing Annie Oakley.
Joanna Moore was lovely. I think marrying Ryan o'neal was her downfall.
I think if Miss.Peggy had stayed on the show it could have lasted an additional 8 years.I couldn’t stand Miss Grump.
So you think Peggy's character alone would have made up for the color episodes? I don't think so.
Peg "Joanna Moore" was a stage actress, and musical artist, she also appeared in movies with Elvis. She was a guest star performer, on many tv shows. Her and Griffith did a few musical numbers together, and he asked her to guest star, much like many other musical groups did...
Google doesn't have all her amazing performances listed, she later did an album with Andy Griffith gospel songs and backup. My grandparents where into Griffith they recorded a TV interview on vhs.
Great comments, Rebecca!
I'm 60 years old and still watch and tape the show ! Saw every episode alot
Two years late on commenting, but better late than never. My favorite of the ladies that they tried to fix up with Andy was the second "Nurse Mary", played by Sue Ann Langdon. She was pretty and polite and she seemed to be just as interested in Andy as he was in her.
Absolutely better late than never! Keep an eye out tomorrow for a video that talks a bit about the first and second Nurses named "Mary".
The answer is simple, Andy didn't feel the time was right. The show was still relatively "new" (mature by today's standards), and I believe that they wanted to keep the show simple and not make it a complete ensemble cast. In the end, it was a simple story of a single man raising a son with the help of his aunt.
Out of the many replies to this I found you to have the best understanding of The Andy Griffith Show. Kudos to you!
I don't see anything sinister about Andys' behavior. It's more likely that he simply wasn't over losing his wife. The heart has to heal before it can welcome anyone new.
Peggy was pretty, could sing, cook, meshed well with Opie and I bet she made a mean Leg Of Lamb! What a shame.
I've been a lifelong Andy watcher. My whole family is. I own all the DVD's and pretty much any time it's airing I'll watch it. I'm actually watching an episode on Pluto TV with Ms Peggy right now at 5:20 am on a Sunday morning. I got here by Googling "Who played Ms Peggy on Andy Griffith". I really like the few episodes with her on the show. I wish she would have been a bigger character on the show. I think she's absolutely beautiful and I love her voice. When I see the Ms Peggy episodes I'm always telling the TV "Come on Andy! Don't run her off!" She is by far the most beautiful woman to ever appear in Mayberry. The only annoying things during her episodes is Floyd haha). I'm a fan of Elinor Donahue's Ellie Walker character too, much more than I am a fan of Helen Crump. My youngest dog is actually named "Ellie" after her character.
I can just barely recall the campfire scene... my dad was a huge fan, so I surely must have seen more episodes with miss Peg. I think audiences preferred Andy as a bachelor and that's why he had such short lived relationships. As a kid, I always thought Aunt Bea chased them off!
Question: "Why did Miss Peggy vanish from the Andy Griffith Show?"
Answer: "I don't really know."
Gee....thanks for that.
I know, she caught barney and andy in the rack. She couldn't cope.
Never heard what might have happened. Joanna was a perfect fit for the show, head and shoulders above the others. I read that she had a troubled life and maybe that was the problem. Rest in peace, you were the best Joanna.
In the novel both Ellie and Peggy were frightened out of town by Aunt Bee. It was only after Peggy had been gone for a month that she called Andy from Chicago and told him of the horrid things Aunt Bee had done to her. Andy confronted Aunt Bee who admitted to not only threating Peggy but also Ellie. Aunt Bee was convinced that both women were under the control of Satan and in Peggy's case, she was also a member of a Mayberry anti smoking group that Aunt Bee was sure had connections with the communist party. I don't recall what Aunt Bee was diagnosed with but in the book Doc Benson puts her on some medication about a month before Andy meets Helen. The TV series is one of my favorites but it leaves so much out from the series of books.
Wow! I've got to track down that book!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Miss Peggy WAS the best! Joanna Moore was GREAT in that role!
Remember the episode where Andy was reunited with and just as quickly ended up turning away from his high school "great love"? The writers used this prospective mate attraction/detraction foil repeatedly. Ellie and Miss Peggy simply fulfilled their roles. Helen provides the fire needed to create some very special episodes. Who will deny that the "Mayberry minutemen club" episode was not top ten quality material due to a synergy between teacher and sheriff. It allowed Andy to showcase his special brand of story telling mastery.
Awesome perspective, Jeff! Thanks for sharing!
Peggy McKay, with her gummy smile, looked a good 10 years older than Andy. I couldn't see those two together for all the tea in China. No chemistry whatsoever. There was another actress who played an old girlfriend of Andy's. They got lost in the woods together, leaving boring Howard & angry Helen (and her horrible false eyelashes) behind in the cabin. Totally unbelievable, totally forgettable. Now,Jan Shutan was great: an excellent actress, loaded with charisma, beauty & charm. She would have been wonderful, but the writers had her reconciling with an aesthetically-challenged fiance. Stupid, short-sighted writers!
If she was pregnant they wouldn't want her showing on the Andy Griffith Show. That's all it had to be. Same with Elinor Donohue. They couldn't have their single female leads looking preggo.
I liked Helen with Andy. There was no pressure. They settled in together well on the show. The other ladies were
Great and attractive, but it was like waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Andy needed someone that still let him be the Star.. Of the Andy Griffith Show.😉
Only a woman would have preferred Helen to Peggy.
Are we forgetting that the actor designs their character around the role that is written in the script? Don't blame the actresses for their work -- they were told by the director how to play their roles. Probably ordered by executives, and many times they are indeed trying to see what works. When Pernell Roberts left Bonanza they even got a first-class actor to join the cast -- Guy Williams (former Disney Zorro). That lasted for only 4 episodes.
When Dennis the Menace's original Mr. Wilson died (Joseph Kearns) they hired a new one Gale Gordon -- later of the Here's Lucy Show. That might not have worked -- but it did. It's all gamble, a toss of the dice. Executives don't give many chances in shows.
Look at the more modern Becker (Ted Danson) episodes -- lots of the early regular characters in the cafe disappeared.
I'm pretty sure Andy wasn't killing them off but I loved your implications. Lol.
I enjoyed all of the movies Joanna Moore was in, I never understood why she left The Andy Griffith Show. It makes one wonder why these ladies that left did leave the show. It looks to me if there was good chemistry with the cast, why mess it up?
I have just binge watched all 8 seasons. Helen Crump was despicable. Ellie was my favorite and nothing I read about her departure makes sense to me. Peggy is my second favorite. But how Aneta Coursat managed to parlay her role into a full time spot on the show, as well as managing an affair with Andy in real life is beyond me. To tell you the truth, Thelma Lou would have been much better for Andy, than Barney. She was adorable. Finally, I noticed that Helen, in the color episodes kept wearing a top and pin that looked like she was a member of Dr McCoy’s staff on Star Trek! Check it out. Oddly enough, both shows used the same Desilu lot. The similarities in clothes is uncanny!!!!
I'll have to go check that one out. I've never made that particular connection to Star Trek!
I think the having an affair with Griffith could be the real reason for the others Ellie & miss Peggy leaving the show aka Griffith may of been a ahole in real life, behind the scenes, no affair, then you're off the show. I hate to think that, but you never know.
@@stevejuzefski5421 Andy usually got his way with his female co-stars. He even bragged about sleeping with Joanna Moore. He and Don Knotts were big players. Andy did not get his way with Ellie, she never felt a connection with Andy & Ellie. Andy was waaay more hill-folk in Season 1 too. Almost Will Stockdale like.
Maybe Helen was actually from the Enterprise and she got dumped into the 1960s due to a transporter accident. It would explain her attitude.
That’s strange!!
I always thought Peggy leaving the show to eventually being replaced by Helen Crump was a real head scratcher but the narrator of this video may have at least partially explained it. I certainly would have picked Peggy over Helen any day of the week
I’ve never seen a comment where someone said they liked Helen Crump.
I don't dislike Helen Crump. I just thought that some of Andy's other girlfriends, like Peggy, seemed to be a better match.
A LOT of us preferred miss Moore! I think the people with the answers owe it to us to give the answer.
She was pregnant in real life, and left the show.
😃 thanks for cutting to the chase!
You did more homework than the robot that made this video.
Jeni Hansen ...ya, i remember now.
Ryan O'Neal's second wife, Leigh Taylor-Young,abruptly left Peyton Place for the same reason.(The third O'Neal child,Patrick.)
lol, I looked at the title and thought it said " Miss Piggy". I do need glasses.
Was Mayberry not as cracked as you might think it would be ?. Think about this. In Mayberry. Nobody was married except Otis. He was always drunk and put himself in Jail !.
There were other characters who were married as well. The repairman, Emmett Clark, was married. The Scobey Family appeared a couple of times on the show. Charlene Darling does get married in one of the episodes. In the opening episode, Andy loses his first housekeeper, Rose, as she gets married. At least one of the mayors had a wife.
All that said, the Andy Griffith Show featured more single characters than any other TV series in history.
don't ferget Mrs throwing dishes at Fred Boon then Opie got nickle for playing nice - Parnel Rigsby lost his $50 wallet in Opie's fortune - quiet Sam on tractor discin the field late at nite expectin baby + 2 chicken throwers got fined $10 then Andy+Helen went to Lake for weekend -saw Peggy in Waltons 20+yrs later wasn't as cute anyMorre
The untold strange story of Mayberry was ALL the strange single MEN living in Mayberry. Otis, Barney, Gomer, Gooper, Howard, Floyd and his odd nephew Warren. These Guys couldn't even say Hi to a woman let alone kiss one.
eyespy u Otis was married. Which might explain why he was often drunk & preferred sleeping in the jail cell.
LOL!
Maybe she left to do more movies I remember her in “follow that dream “ with Elvis Presley
We all wondered what happened to Peggy. I think most of us wondered what happened. I think there was a personality/ jealousy factor somewhere that the people behind the scenes though that it should remain private. No one compared to "Peg". She was perfect and like most others, I feel for her also. With most of the connections gone, except Ronny Howard, maybe know living knows the answer anymore?
She struggled with addiction. Alcohol and drugs. Was late on the set often. Goggle her. Very sad story. Her life. I did think she was the one for Andy.
She was my favorite. I never cared for Helen.
As beautiful---and as talented---as she was, it is said Joanna showed a strong tendency to make self defeating decisions. I believe this is one of them. A decision that may have changed her life forever.
The greatest show ever created....
I don't disagree, Doc!
Joanne was the mother of Tatum O'Neal.
She was the third Mayberry Co nurse on the series. There were two Marys; one blond and one brunette.
They were both only on for a couple episodes each. Everyone preferred Miss Peggy to Mis Crump!
Joanna Moore was a Georgia Peach with that beautiful southern accent. Sad she only lived to be 63, after a tough life of drugs and alcohol. She was my favorite girlfriend for Andy. Helen "Grump" suffered from PMS 24/7, but played the part well. (Andy and her had a well known fling going on behind the scenes too) Still the best TV show ever made. Hands down. RIP to all the characters that are now gone. I believe Thelma Lou and Opie and the only two still alive. (And "ole Thel" is gettin' on up there)
Great comment, tagnut1952!
Elinor Donahue is alive and well as if 2021
