- Danny is arrested by Sheriff Andy Taylor for going through a stop sign in the town of Mayberry. This episode was the pilot for "The Andy Griffith Show."
Originally titled "Make Room for Daddy," this classic sitcom follows a NYC nightclub entertainer as he hilariously juggles his career and family life.

Andy had some movies out, 1 was " No time for sgt's " had Don Knotts init in a small role, also the salesman played char. Name Ben in the show same business style, owned a store
I am 64 years old, do the math 😊 I remember watching the Danny Thomas show Andy Griffith show, when it was good old clean entertainment! And all those years I cannot tell you how many times I have seen the reruns 😊 I feel very bad for the younger that have this horrible garbage and what they call entertainment. 😔

I watched the Danny Thomas Show when I was a little kid. The way he yelled at his family members scared me. ... That theme music at the beginning of the show is a jazz arrangement of the old song "Danny Boy". I only learned that recently.
Yes the Danny Thomas center saved many of children of cancer i admair someone for that.

I came back to visit my Mom who had been a piano teacher for years. She was binge watching Andy Griffith the whole time I was there. I said why are you watching this old stuff? She said because she didn't get a chance to while it was on. I heard her giggling and laughing that whole visit till late into the night. I didn't know she could laugh like that. It was precious. So is this. Thankyou.

Oh, this is the guy that started St Jude. I heard the name, but never knew exactly who he was. Legend/Angel he was.

Unfortunately - the nauseous persistent virtue signaling a lot of Boomers seem oblivious as to just how ANNOYING AND OFFENSIVE it is becoming is making young people view "The Good Old Days" very differently than these insipid campaigns to shove your values down their throats would seem designed to effect.

I love them all but my favorites are Mr. McBeevee, Andy discovers America, Barney buys a car, Opie & the momma bird where he had to raise the babies! There’s others but those stand out to me! Very Good show! And My granddaughters 6 & 4 will actually tell me to stop on Andy if it’s on. I think my 6yo has an Opie Crush! 😂
I can watch these episodes over n over again and never get tired of them. Ive not watched any network prime time show in over 12 years.

I didn’t realize this was the start of the Andy Griffith’s show. Very interesting. Francis Bavier was playing a different character.
I'm 65 and never knew this was how they developed the Andy Griffith show. I recently learned that Andy was at a club in Florida and saw Jim Nabors perform. He was so impressed he had him come out to audition for the part of Gomer Pyle. Well , the rest as they say, is history
Andy was a little more funnier in this episode, Don Knotts saw it and said to the producer Sheldon Leonard that they needed a deputy and Leonard invited him to audition and he became Barney Fife, the show went downhill when he left.

Boy what i wouldnt give to go back in time. I was born in the wrong time. I have always loved the Andy Griffith shows. There will never be another show that was clean and pure, yet made you laugh like a child again. Loved it
I’m almost 70, and my dad was a t.v. Repair man in the fifties and sixties. He drove a van full of tubes to change when he got a call from someone. He also installed the tall antennas on people’s roofs.. I remember this .. and it’s nice to see it again ! Love Grandma Debbie
@ Debra Sparks-- We are about the same age, and I can remember back in the late 1950's and 1960's, my dad would fix our old circa 1950 Westinghouse tv. He would remove some of the tubes from the tv and we would then go to the local drugstore that had a tv tube testing machine that also contained tubes for sale. He would purchase the the necessary tubes, and then put them in the tv when we got back home.
When we moved to a newer house in 1961, that house had a very large tv antenna that was attached to the outside fireplace chimney.
@@franknew9001 after my dad was wounded on Omaha Beach, the army trained him in a new thing.. Television! He had a van full of tubes and went to houses to “ repair “ ( change tubes). He also installed antennas on rooftops! He made a good living because tubes went out a lot ! 🤣🤣 our first t.v. Was a giant thing with a round screen, but we had the highest antenna in town.🤣 remember when it showed the test pattern at night right after the tape of jets flying with America the Beautiful played ?? And only 3 stations back then ?? I miss those days, everything was so innocent back then..
@ Debra Sparks-- I am glad that your dad survived at Omaha Beach, as my dad also survived WWll. My dad was a navigator on a B25 bomber, and their plane was shot at and badly damaged by enemy fire and crashed. All but one crew member survived the crash.
I can easily remember when there were only three network stations, NBC, ABC, and CBS. I was too young to remember the DuMont network that went out of business around 1956. My dad told me about the DuMont network that originally aired the Jackie Gleason show called "The Honeymooners."
I was lucky to grow up in Maryland that was very close to Washington, DC. Washington had a independent metromedia channel that repeated many shows for kids such as "The Three Stooges," " Superman, " and many other shows that kids like. This was my favorite tv channel by far back then.
I do remember back in the 1960's that a little after midnight, all of the networks would play the National Anthem with the planes flying, then go to a "test pattern" that had an Indian on it, and a little later the picture would turn to "snow."

@@franknew9001 we are walking history books! I always say to young kids, the best way to learn history is to ask us “oldies “. Because we were there!! In 1960 my dad took us to the train station here in Merced California to see SENATOR John Kennedy give a speech when he ran for president.. remember how they would go on trains and stop at every town give a speech standing on the caboose.. then go to the next town?? Living in California, they’d start in L.A. then end up in Sacramento, THEN fly to another state and catch another train .. it was a good time then .. my dad was first infantry, North Africa, Sicily,Italy, then wounded on Omaha.. he was my hero and always will be.Back then they used to take care of disabled vets. I still live in the house he got with his G.I. Bill.. three bedroom house on a acre of land that cost him only $5,000!
I've always love the Andy Griffith show since I was a kid, I'm 73 now and still love it and watch the reruns every evening. I'm glad I came across this and watched it, never knew it even existed...! =)
I don't remember ever seeing this episode either. And like you I've watched the Andy Griffith Show all my life. The re-runs aren't available to me right now, but I have watched them many a time!
Same here, I guess because it’s part of the Danny Thomas series and not the Andy Griffith series. I found it funnier, not sure if it’s because it’s the first time I’ve seen it

I’ve never seen it either (I’m 76+). I do remember watching the Danny Thomas Show when I was a kid - seems I remember him losing his wife and eventually marrying someone else along the way. Thank y do much for this wonderful flash back to a better time!
Two of the best shows ever made in one episode.
This was the pilot episode for Andy Griffith. Spun off from Danny Thomas Show. Andy Griffith became a hit in 1958 for doing "No Time For Sargents". Don Knotts was not part of the original Mayberry cast. When Don saw this episode he called Andy and said, "I think you need a deputy sheriff." The rest is history.
I had no idea that andy's show started on Danny's show. That's really cool. I love the Andy Griffith show and this is an interesting part of television history. It's also interesting to see Francis playing someone other than aunt bea.
I adore that about Barney, and really hope that’s how the conversation actually went.

This was not a Pilot for the Andy Griffith show. this is an Episode of the the Danny Thomas show. Andy Griffith was a SPIN OFF of the Danny Thomas show. for example. Mork was on happy Days, the episode with Mork was not a pilot for the Mork and Mindy show. Mork and Mindy was a Happy Days spin off. Lavern and Shirley were in an episode of Happy Days. so once again Lavern and Shirly was a spin off of Happy Days. Understand?????
At the end when Danny Thomas heard he still owed $70.00 and went back into the cell, you'd have thought he was Jack Benny!

Jack Benny is timeless. a person can watch most of his stuff today and still laugh like hell.
He did a little radio skit where a mugger pulls a gun on him and Benny's gal say "Oh!, he's got a gun!"

I love that they cast Frank Cady to play the town drunk which would eventually be recast as Otis Campbell in the actual series. Then, years later Otis would leave Mayberry and head off to see what life in the "big city" would be like only to end up in the drunk tank there and who does he meet? Frank Cady again playing another drunk. Cady is better known for playing Sam Drucker, the proprietor of the General Store in Hooterville (the main competition to the Andy Griffith franchise of rural comedies in the Sixties).
The actor playing Otis would also show up on Adam-12 as a hapless drunk driver. I guess he sort of became " type cast?"
@@leroyproud294 You mean Hal Smith? He had a long career as a voice actor also for Disney and Hanna-Babera. He voiced "Owl" for winnie the pooh and was a character in a segment of the Peter Potamus Show by H-B based on the Three Muskateers if they were dogs (simple enough concept right?).
@Charles Philip Adams Yes, it was Hal Smith. In that episode of Adam-12, he played the character almost exactly like he portrayed Otis Campbell on Andy Griffith. I watched Adam-12 a lot when I was in high school. Funny how I never noticed things like that back then.
Also noticed they changed the name of Aunt Bee's character, who wasn't seen. Yet the actress that played Aunt Bee was the widow being gouged by the tux renter.
@Robert Varisco I saw that. For some reason, Francis Bavier and Andy Griffith didn't get along too well. At least, that is what I have read in the past. I wonder if it had anything to do with her continuing vonacular Transatlantic accent! To me, it seemed so out of place for her to talk that way in a southern small town in the early 60s.

I am 54, and I have always loved the Andy Griffith show. I never knew this episode existed. I've watched every episode of Andy Griffith and every season. I wish TV shows were still made like this instead of all these reality shows that have no point. This was really finding an Easter egg on UA-cam. Thank you for uploading this episode. Loved it.

You can see alot of the old shows like this with an antenna. I got rid of cable tv 10 years ago ...dont miss it at all. I still get news on ch.4, 6, 8, westerns and old citcoms. I get around 30+ channels. And their all free

When this show was first run I lived in North Carolina just south of Andy Griffith’s hometown Mount Airy. This town was the basis of Mayberry.
Have you been back? They really leaned into Mayberry as the other industries shut down or scaled back. I've visited their "Courthouse, Wally's gas station and attempted to get a haircut at Floyd's but they closed early due to weather. It was too nice to miss out on fishing. (According to one resident.)

This was such a well-done episode. I always loved episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" that contrasted the pretense of big city people with the simple ways of small-town people.
Whenever I see one of these shows and at the end, I see that it was either produced/directed by Sheldon Leonard, I smile and shake my head. Mr. Sheldon Leonard was an actor from the 30s, 40s, that usually played gangster roles, like Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls, Phil Church in Another Thin Man, and Nick the bartender in It’s a Wonderful Life, and countless other roles. It is amazing to say the least how successful he was as a producer and director. Just look back at all the "HIT" shows he produced, and you will be astonished. [Danny Thomas, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Gomer Pyle, and more] He was truly talented and amazing. Thank you, Mr. Sheldon Leonard, for your incredible contribution to show business entertainment.

The Andy Griffith Show was a favourite of mine, growing up. My Grandmother was from a small part of England. Never lost her accent. I spent many weekends at my grandparents home, and Summers. Andy Griffith always whistles in various episodes, as I thoughtbtgst was so quaint , in a small town. I would have so enjoyed meeting him in person. I grew up without a Dad at age 4 ( He passed away or cardiac arrest at 35 years old) . My Mum was only 32. I. truly related to this Show. It was wholesome and delightful. @Joe Stamps I don’t think there ever was I think is because people change with the times, I never saw a black person on the Andy show, now I see commercials of two males kissing on camera, females too, I’m not judging to each his own but everything we see now was done in private, now we hear of things that went on back then, it’s always been there, now people just don’t care about morality, it’s the me generation after all, somewhere along the way we lost ourselves, and it’s a shame, there is no way to put the jinn back in the lamp but he was always there waiting to be let out and it’s a shame someone did, now there’s no use in closing the barn door after the horses got out🤦🏼♂️

Hollywood used to have "The Legion of Decency" to monitor it. After the Second Vatican Council it was dropped. Down, down, down went the decency until it literally disappeared all together.

G. episodes with a black person first one is when a temporary deputy is on and Barney is showing him how to work the siren and it sticks on. The crowd of people you’ll see her. A family TV time. The simple life.
Many many years ago my late father dated a woman whose son was a producer at 20th Century Fox.
The studio was not "open to the public" or gave tours (like Universal Studios did), but I was able to go and visit there for a few days.
I saw many famous actors and actresses who were filming their TV shows at the time.
What a treat to actually walk on the set that The Andy Griffith show was filmed! I could not tell you the joy I had!
Even though it was only a TV show, it instilled in all of us who love this show a true understanding of "real America"... of good country living, nice neighbors, and average Folk.
Ever since I was a child watching the show I had always wanted a house that had a porch like Andy's house!
I could watch these episodes a zillion times _(and probably have!)_ and never tire seeing them again!

When I was a little boy I can recall my Mama would holler for me to come In because Andy was coming on. I had four sisters and my mom and we would all gather around that old black and white tv and watch.That was around 1967 68!and now I'm sixty In 2023 and I still love watching The Andy Griffith show and I can hear my mother's voice. Those days were like living In Heaven.

I am 66 yrs old, n grew up watching both shows n STILL watch reruns to this day, so , thank you for showing me this episode blending both classic comedy shows from an era that was awesome to grow up in!!!! The values n morals n sense of community n personal worth that we learned by experiencing these shows as kids are long gone from most of the youth, as well as the Generations that bore them, n that is totally a crime for any new children that are coming up today!!! Love these old shows n it is amazing how they still hold up today!!!!

That was an innovative way to introduce a new sitcom.
It was a “Backdoor Pilot” which had the characters on another show to eventually spin them off. Laverne and Shirley started out on Happy Days before being spun off. The weirdest one was Mork on Happy Days challenging Fonzie.
I watched Andy growing up and I watch him still. I can't stand what passes for "entertainment " now.

Will Wright who plays unscrupulous Mr. Johnson in the pilot played the Scrooge-like character Ben Weaver on 3 episodes of Andy's show, including the classic Christmas episode from the first season.

That Christmas episode is one of my favorites...always brings tears to my eyes.
That actor was perfect for that old Scrooge type character. He just looked the part. We don't have those kinds of older character actors anymore. Anyone over 50 rarely gets cast on tv shows now. You have to be a pre-teen, teen or young adult (or maybe into your 30s to be interesting to tv execs and that might be pushing it).

Will Wright was a character actor in Hollywood fer' many years. As such he appears in all kinds of classic cinema. In reality Wright actually wasn't as old as he appeared. He died of cancer at 68 I believe but played "old and a curmudgeon", for many years prior. Alot like BURT MUSTIN who was alot like Wright --- probably even MORE so.....the difference was that Mustin lived to actually become " an older gentleman "....!
63 years ago...young Ron Howard's done all right for himself, wouldn't you say? I remember watching Andy and Opie when these shows were new, and Danny Thomas as well. As a 14-year old just back from four years in France I just ate all of it up. Good clean entertainment.

How could anyone not love these shows bring them back it may help some the people in the government how they were raised.
That is a very nice thought but I doubt anything can help the people in government now. They are the big people that are supposed to know better and set the example But now they are the biggest Offenders and think that they are above the law.

Danny Thomas was like that, a humorist. He and Andy Griffiths were a couple of the great entertainers of their era.
I’m 75. I also grew up on these shows and watched all of them. I Love Lucy, Danny Thomas, Andy Griffith, Dick VanDyke, Jackie Gleason, Burns and Allen, Leave It To Beaver - and all I can say is thank God for ME-TV, FE-TV, and UA-cam! I have no interest in any of the comedies from the 70s on with the exception of Happy Days. These shows STILL make me laugh and I never tire of watching the reruns. The older I get, the more I long for the 50s again. It really was different back then..😢
I'm 72 years and l still watch Andy Griffith wen ever it's on TV l don't get bored with the reruns,
I rarely missed either Danny Thomas or Andy Griffith shows but I don't remember this one. Wow. When Aunt Bea came walking in and Andy called her by another name I was so surprised.

I miss all the old television shows, every evening when Andy Griffin reruns come on she looks over at me and says “why can’t we move to Mayberry, what happened to our country”. I grew up in a small rural town in Michigan. Very much like Mayberry, we didn’t lock our doors, as children we rode our bikes without helmets. We stayed outdoors until the street lights came on. Drank tap water from the garden hose. We had competition shooting in high school, both rifle and sporting clays. Every pickup truck in the high school parking lot had a easyrider rifle rack in the back window. There were no home invasions, no schools, mall, or places of worship shootings. We judged people on their actions, content of their character, not the color of their skin or for what they could do for us.

I was approaching my 9th birthday when this aired. I'm pretty sure we watched this because that's what we did as a family. TV watching was big deal for many folks at that time. I don't remember this one, but, may have seen it. Thanks for sharing it. Good memories of that time in my life.
This show is one very good program. The writing is excellent and these actors are legendary. I have never seen this one. Thank you.
I always loved it when shows crossed over. Very well done. Aunt Bea wasn't Aunt Bea in this show though!
Frances Bavier {"Henrietta Perkins" in this episode} appeared as a different character when several changes were made between this "prototype" episode, and the series that followed- especially when Andy wanted Don Knotts to be his deputy, "Barney Fife"......and "Rose" left the Taylor household to get married......and "Aunt Bee" arrived to take her place in the first episode.

@patrickryan1515 the town drunk in this episode, if you remember was a drunk in Mt.Pilot in the episode that Otis took his business to Mt.Pilot, Barney and Andy went up to try to talk Otis into coming back

Indeed. Hal Smith, of course, was later cast as a different "town drunk", while Frank Cady continued to appear occasionally as "Doc WillIams" on "THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET".

Danny Thomas owned a piece of The Andy Griffith Show, as well as The Dick Van Dyke Show, which helped make him a wealthy man. Funny how those two shows are more popular than ever while Make Room For Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show has faded into the background.
I still love "Father Knows Best", "Ozzie and Harriet", and "My Three Sons"......so sad that innocence is gone today!😢

I'm so thankful I grew up watching shows like this instead of what's on TV now. I watch the reruns of his show every weekday. TV land and Metv have the old shows. Nice to escape from the bizarreness of society today
Andy Griffith was at The University Of North Carolina at the same time my dad was there. They both Graduated in 1949.

My mom used to follow Andy after school when he taught in my hometown. I have watched his show multiple times. But I’ve never seen this episode. Fun to see Aunt Bea in a different role.
Classic television! I especially loved the scene with the glass coffee table.
I thought I have seen every episode even though this was Danny Thomas this was really good and seeing people in different roles before they officially made it a TV show thank you

As a biker and a little bit older, then some of my counterparts . When I have time to myself and go from my house to my son's house in Tennessee, i find myself actually taking Andy's advice . Taking the backroads and exploring and enjoying the time and people I meet . I live in GA myself, been to Savannah, several small towns in different states, and I wish people would wake up and enjoy the small things instead of Hating each other. You might find out that life isn't that bad.

I'm 63 and have watched this show most if not all of my life and never knew Aunt Bee was another character in the first show.
Danny Thomas was one of the greatest sitcom actors...His daughter...Marlo Thomas...was not too bad also...

I love theme music on these old shows...that even brings back feelings of good times as a child. We could only watch episodes once a week and reruns in the summer. Something young people now wouldn't understand.
We watched all old b/w tv shows in one TV.
We are about the same age of Opie .
