Rear dampers could be rebuild by Nagengast in Poland. Or put in the new KW V3 from Raab Motorsport that just came out. Rear diff doesn't need an LSD because it already is one. Just have it rebuild at Westwood Performance. The lower front control arms can be upgrades to the ones from E31. Same size but beefier bushings. As for exhaust stuff, Supersprint can certify that their system is in conformity with H regulations. Souce: Had an E34 touring for a couple of years. Ah, the S38 waterpump is NLA - at the dealer and aftermarket. But you have your contacts I guess.
The 420G 6 speed gearbox is the same but the bell housing is different because of the 540 V8.. if your 5 speed is in good condition keep it because the 6th speed is mostly an overdrive (very long ratio)
wow... hands down, Sreten is the Top G at reparing old BMWs, I would never have guessed the issue. Can't stress this enough, this man is a miracle worker, fixing such an isolated issue in such a short amount of time, really have to watch his video to find out!
Misha, have owned a 3.8 for 20 years before passing it down to my nephew. If it’s running rough do valve clearances asap and fuel filter. Then start poking about checking compression etc. I’m sure I will comment more as the E34 videos come along as I did all mechanical work myself 😊👍
No M5 had 100L, only up to 91 (Gulf and Japan ones have 80). Someone just swapped it from E32 and put the original needle. The Alpina B10 however had 110L on order.
Great video, I just love the M5 so much. The look of that car just gives away confidence, what a classic. Personally I'd try to keep the balance between the "M5 stockness" and needed track features but I believe I wouldn't go overboard with that thing. After all it's a matter of personal choice so whatever you do, have fun, stay safe and hopefully soon we will here some S38 screaming around the ring. Good luck P.S Im with the "keep these wheels squad" lol
Fijn dat de M5 er zo goed uitziet, wat achterstallig onderhoud wegwerken en dan een jaar er mee rijden en bedenken wat je er wel of niet mee gaat doen. Veel plezier ermee Misha.
He is an awesome mechanic, who can diagnose and fix those cars I don*t know about Tesla since that car is different from the others, but he has a lot of knowledge on BMWs and I suppose the others.
I would go for a set of tractive adaptive coilovers. It would suit better the M5 philosophy (keep the confort and good body control at the same time). That’s what I’m planning to do on mine! Cheers
Don’t ruin the interior with a cage. Maybe go for an OEM plus look restoration. Do a chassis dry ice cleaning. See what you have to work with. Tighten/refresh the chassis. Mecanical and engine upgrades YES!
Really nice "birthday gift". ;) If the car still has the 3,6 brakes, i wouldn't keep them stock if you want to drive it on the ring, they heat up a bit too quickly, also the cooling for the turbine wheels is not present. The rear shocks are normal to leak a bit, it gets worse when you lift up the car. If you remove the auto leveling, you should check where to bridge the circuit, best would be close to the engine or use a 535i servo pump. The diff is already 25% limited by default on the M5. Also the M5 has 90l tank by default, 100l war an option. I would recommend to adjust valve clearance a.s.a.p, also very important, check for cracked air hoses and check if the vacuum system isn't leaking. Next you should get your trotthle-bodies synchronized. I must say, you kept it quiet simple in the video, but the S38 is that sort of engine, where it's not enough to simply do normal maintenance tasks. If you don't know what has been done in the past, you will have a huge list of checks, fixes adjustments and other stuff to care about, before you push it hard. You say it's not running that well, please check everything and get it running well, before you drive it more. A soft and easy lap at the ring should be ok, i hope. ;)
Hi Induleo, nice comment. I've never heard of a 100l option tank for the E34 M5. Alpina offered an extra tank though. The cluster is from an E320 750i, which had 100l tanks and thus the 100l gauge.
@@utubemember525 agreed, the 100l tank was on the E32. Maybe someone fitted a 100l gauge on the cluster, because the M5 was upgraded with a 100l tank. I can not tell from what I see in the video, but the 100l tank is made out of steel and would have probably rusted, this one looks really fine! On the other hand, I'm not so sure tough that the whole cluster is from an E32 750i. Just looked at an original cluster here and the only thing that doesn't match is the fuel gauge and of course the chrome rings. ;) 750i: 100l, 280km/h, 7000rpm red line at 5800, econometer, watertemp and no M logo, but ASC. M5: 90l, 300km/h, 8000rpm red line at 7000, oiltemp, watertemp and M logo in the middle.
I’m surprised that you can tow with a rope in Germany, here it’s just tolerated, we’re supposed to use a tow bar, it will prevent the towed car to rear end the towing car when stopping.
Misha, why don't you want to keep M-parallel wheels? IMHO style37 is a perfect match for 34s. They freshen up the look while not feeling "out of the era". Plus, they're original "M" wheels. Or, can keep them as second pair of "winter wheels" or "road-trip wheels". I myself was looking for m-parallels for my 530i, couldn't find a good set and went for "style 71" from e46.
Flywheel rattle could be a result of running the 3.6 flywheel on the 3.8 engine i run this on my 3.8 and get the same chatter, the 3.6 one is 5.7kg vs 13.7kg on the 3.8 as its dual mass the result is it revs much more freely, I also removed smog pump from crank as this is also just sapping power/responsiveness ;)
I'd say for the first year, just build the car as original. I don't consider better brakes or suspension as "mods", unless they're for track use. Sooo, buy whatever is nice and available for the road and simply good for track, and enjoy the car!
I have ground control coilovers in mine and it rides well and handles well. They run Koni shocks so are easy to replace. Also, the rattle from the gearbox on idle may actually be the internals of the box itself. When the S38 doesnt idle well it can rattle, especially if it has a SM flywheel. Mine sounds the same but not as loud.
Well, if you want even crazy mods to be road-legal keeping it on polish plates seems like best idea, honestly nothing is being written into paperwork (unlike Germany). But for example, even with top class roll cage you will not pass technical inspection .. it's quite tricky, but should be easier than in Germany.
"You can look at the M539 Channel to learn about the issue why it wasn't starting" DUDE!! don't be ashamed....we have all been there...no fuel in the tank has happened to us all (I have been to the side of the road calling the road services assuming I had an engine failure....which it basically was due to the lack of fuel LOL)!!

Hi misha. Has it had a engine swap at some point in its life, its a 3.8 5 speed that looks like it's still got self leveling rear suspension, if it was a 1988/1989 in the UK it would be 3,6 with self levelling rears. If it was a 1994 it should be 3.8 with EDC suspension and 6 speed box. Our remaining car is a 1993 3.8 5 speed with EDC which is what yours should be Ps keep the M parallels and if you swop the box to a 6 speed you will need the longer prop shaft from the 6 speed M5
