Can’t remember the order of the alphabet or months at times (I almost never remember the alphabet which is absolutely embarrassing.) Yet when I didn’t know multiplication, I solved 9 x 7. I got 63 just by painfully guessing the number and having trust issues with myself. Yeah, welcome to my intelligence.

3:42 Yup, you just memorize the numbers, kind of like memorizing lines in theater.
I know this video is old, but for anyone reading this who still struggles with that stuff (like myself), here are a few tips:
    1. Multiplying by nine, up to 20, excluding 0 and 11, the digits will always add up to 9. Plus, it's a little bit lower than its multiple of ten.
    Example: 9 x 3. 10 x 3 is 30, so it's a little less than 30, which means the first digit is 2. 2 + 7 = 9. The answer is 27.
    2. Multiplying anything by 10 will always be the same number with a 0 at the end.
    3. Multiplying anything by 11 will always be that number times 10 + that original number. (9 x 11 = 9 x 10 + 9.) Also, up until 10, it's also always that number and that number. ( 9 x 11 = 99, or 6 x 11 is 66.)
    4. There's another way to do that multiplication thingy that I didn't know about for a long time!! You know that old way,
    11
    x 2
    _________
    22
right? But you can also separate the two columns so you don't have to do any carrying, like so:
    11
    x 2
    _________
    2
    + 20
    _________
    22
Might be common knowledge, but I still use that technique.
Alright, might be a totally useless comment, but I hope someone gets use out of it!

By the time that I was doing this I actually could read those clocks but just barely so I was only half lying to her.
Another thing I consider under the same umbrella was that I also would tell her the temperature then I pause for a second and say "in Celsius" and she would always laugh at that.

    • @TheFeldhamster
      @TheFeldhamster 3 роки тому +7

@@themandotorianpartyofameri8738 actually, it's good to make people memorize the times tables. It may sound silly, but it's the same as forcing people to memorize vocabulary words when learning a foreign language or the ABC's. You need some degree of fluency to actually use knowledge in an efficient manner. Imagine nobody had ever forced you to really memorize the ABC's. You'd not be able to read. Same with the times tables. I gave remedial math for a while and people asked me to help their kids because they had "so much trouble with equations" or something. In 90% of the cases the underlying problem was that the kid didn't know the times tables by heart. Now, if you have to spend a lot of your brain power to figure out every little multiplication and division, that just takes away from your ability to concentrate on the rest. And it takes too much time to finish the test on time, so you fail. Also, it makes every homework feel like a terrible chore. Like, imagine your homework is to read a 5 page story in a book but you have to think really hard to recognize every letter. That sounds terrible, right? While all the other kids would already be discussing the story they just read.
I think the idea that "forcing kids to memorize stuff == bad" isn't such a good idea if taken too far. Yes, since we can look up a lot of data easily nowadays we should put less emphasis on memorization of facts. Like, do you really need to memorize every little river and every little mountain valley in your country? My mom still had to learn all of those by heart and is super proud of it which imo is ridiculous. But the times tables are one of the few things that really give you a big boost in the application of math, so it's useful to invest some effort into learning them.

About me and math, im pretty ok with it. EXCEPT COMPLEX ALGABRA! Like, I can manage the basics with ease, but when it gets more complicated, I am almost always lost in it. And about the clock, I can read them, but as you Chip, need more time. And not because I dont know the numbers or positions, no. Because the arrows can be sometimes BETWEEN the numbers, and then im kinda lost. So I need probably watch with arrows going from number to number. Then I think, it would be easier.

I was diagnosed with something called Dyscalulia in school and struggled with math to such a drastic degree that I was often ignored, dismissed, or even ridiculed by others for it. Sometimes even teachers. Even the nicer ones didn’t know how to help me. I gave up a lot, refused to do homework, and suffered for it. It still makes me angry that I was forcibly compared to everyone else and that I was overwhelmed with how much work I was given. It often took hours to get a shingle assignment done and bothering with it would have meant that I literally had to cut into some of my time for sleeping /every day/ in order to get it all done. It would have meant that I would literally have to start the moment I got on the bus to go home and stop sometimes hours after midnight only to get up at 6 AM to do it all over again. And one of my parents was unforgiving and punished me often for choosing not to do it.
It’s one of the reasons I suspect I have CPTSD now.
