Street Running Train Interrupts Parade & Cuts Thru Crowds Behind Santa, Light Up LaGrange 2022

- Street Running Train Surprises City During Parade & Light Up LaGrange 2022! Right as the parade with Santa got to me I see a CSX train coming right on cue! I could see Santa and the headlight of the train at the same time. Thousands of people were on the streets and had to move out of the way for the train to run down the middle of Main Street. Perfect timing for the rail fans! Video also includes another street runner train, model train layout in the train station, steam train appearing to come back to life and the unveiling of a brand new statue in LaGrange. All this and more at the 2022 Light Up LaGrange in LaGrange, Kentucky.
First we see a CSX street running train with empty auto racks heading to Louisville, Kentucky from Cincinnati Queensgate Yard. This train came through right after the police closed Main Street to traffic. Shortly after that we see the start of the Shop With A Trooper 5K Run. Then we go to the train station at the north end of town. We see the model train layouts in the basement and then we see the old steam engine outside appear to come to life. Smoke was added for effects. After that I went to the Railfan platform for a quick look.
Santa Claus came by on the back of a fire truck just a little after 6pm. I had to remove the audio due to a claim from Jackson 5 for 22 seconds of the song Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. I took out a few extra seconds to play it safe. Had I left their audio in all of the money from this video would have gone to them. I'm just trying to get my gas and time paid for in making this video. I had to completely redownload the video which took me an extra day to post it.
In the video you can hear my scanner audio. The railroad dispatcher was talking to the train crew about the parade. That is very interesting audio and I'm probably the only person to record it. The train comes through the crowds of people at about 10 miles per hour and then speeds up after the locomotives exit the street. The train can speed up to 25 mph after the locomotives leave the street. In my next video from LaGrange I will show the signs for the train speed. Too many people keep reporting the wrong information and I keep trying to correct them. The best train frequencies for LaGrange are 161.370 for road, 161.310 for dispatcher to train and 452.9375 for end of train device.
I filmed the train in the area of town that has the most light. I didn't do anything by chance. I had been planning this video for months. After the train passed I went over to film the unveiling of the new statue and the turning on of the lights in town. I was able to get my picture taken next to the new statue with the designer.
After that I went back to the coffee shop for another Latte and to warm up and check my UA-cam channel. Some of the shops were still open up to 9pm. I was getting ready to leave just before 9 when I heard a train approaching on my scanner. The train finally arrived at 9:07pm and after filming it I left for the long ride home. See my video of that special train. Saturday was a busy train day for LaGrange. On my way there I filmed a train near Campbellsburg, Kentucky that had just gone through LaGrange. I filmed 4 other trains in LaGrange from 1pm to 9:20pm. I was hoping for 2 trains in LaGrange so I was pretty lucky.
Filmed in 1080p with 60fps on Saturday, December 3, 2022AD
Thanks for watching! If you have time, please watch another video of mine to help keep my channel going. Ads in the videos pay for my gas and other costs. I do this full time.

CSX provided the World's heaviest parade float!!
Was better than the parade itself.
They should’ve had a float on the back of the train 🚂 instead of the train cars
That should of strung lights on the thing
Would have been amazing if they put a caboose on the back, lit up with Christmas lights and had Santa waving.
@@loft306 Canadian Pacific has that covered with their touring holiday trains.
The railroaders should get all they deserve. Everyone is out enjoying the festivities, but these guys are out keeping the country moving. That's what it's all about..
Including unplanned sick days for Pete's sake!
A shame they could not get the Canadian Holiday Train out there. That would have helped the show big time!!!
I think they should light up some more trains!
They are still working on it , the government just wanted to avert a strike while it was worked out , even they think they need the sick days , the only ones who think they don't ,are the railroads 🤦🏻♂️
Trying to move the country while workers are illegally striking rn
CSX: We're coming through and will be a part of the parade whether you like it or not!
CSX workers: We had our Christmas ruined thanks to the politicians, now we're ruining yours!
That town like it alot. That is a town that really loves their railroaders.
Town didn't invite CSX train to the parade so CSX fixed that 🤣
From that radio conversation between dispatch and the train crew, it sounds like the town could request 72 hours in advance for CSX to not come through during the parade, but the town decided not to request this. Maybe there's a fee involved.
@@DVeck89 from the looks of those people, they didn’t want to 😂
Glad to see town and rail road respect each other.
As though that weren’t common.
Unlike Florida, where it seems someone gets a car stuck on the main every other day
Great to see a town full of people enjoying themselves.
It was fun and everyone had a good time
Good folk
It would’ve been real cool if the railroad got a part of this. Imagine a CSX locomotive adorned in Xmas colors and ornaments and moving along with the parade.
@@imfunniguy3744 A missed PR moment
@@FabianDiazTrainsTrucksNCars I filmed this at the spot with the most light. I checked out the whole street first. I wish I had my wife camera because it does better in the dark
When the crowd cheered and waved to the crew, it teared me right up. There is goodness and love all around, even as all the other stuff is so prominent.
Why did you tear up? Are you that weak?
@@HMSHOOD1920 Not weak, just wired that way. I buried my parents both with dry eyes. But, if I am struck that I'm witnessing a moment of perfection, it can bring tears. Sometimes it's music, once it was seeing a family waiting by the tracks with a happy bouncing golden retriever, as the sound of the whistle of the approaching steam locomotive pulling the circus train was drifting in. Perfect.
@@HMSHOOD1920 Projection. Touch grass
@@arcticchod5370 gonna cry?

I loved that they cheered for the Train, Railroad workers deserve better than they get
That's gotta be both cool as hell for the engineer to be "part of the parade", while at the same time nerve-wracking as all get-out having all those people, including tons of kids, so near the tracks. . .
Well, once the driver gets the loco past the crowd, there's nothing left he can do and it's left all up to the baton cops.
Also, now he knows what it's like to drive a subway train past Yankee Stadium on game days 😁
Health & safety would have the screaming habdabs they wouldn't allow anything like this in the uk every rail track has to be fenced off
@@maly2ts408I hear ya! Laying tracks down the middle of mainstreet like this is definitely something that wouldn't be done today! It's simply a relic of the past, when train depots managed to become towns around the tracks that were already there.
Best parade ever! A train with 50,000 individuals watching it 😊
A shame they couldn't get the Canadian Holiday Train in there too! What a show that would have made!!!
What a kid’s fantasy Santa , Fire trucks , and a Train !!!
Thats the BIGGEST group of RAILFANS that I've ever seen...
How many Christmas parades have you been to that an actual real train in it? lol
Thanks so much, JT. Excellent video and Merry Christmas everyone!
Thank you for visiting our RR Museum. We enjoyed nearly 1500 visitors this day. Our goal is not just to preserve rail history, but to serve the community thru education.
Listening to the train radio traffic it definitely sounds like there was a breakdown in communication between CSX and the town.
and it caused an extremely dangerous situation!
@@billstill1794 not really. Not as long as people didn't do anything stupid like crawl under the train, climb over it which does happen albeit not with auto racks, or refuse to get off the tracks with the train coming
There is something about 'street running'. It is just awesome whether it is long freights in the US or passenger trains in Switzerland.
LaGrange should be proud of their downtown. You did a nice job of filming the train and the crowd. A real nice touch and what a great plce to be at Christmas.
Heard rumor the new incoming mayor is going to get csx line reroute outside of downtown
LaGrange is the "STREET RUNNING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD"
But, is it really 🤔🤷♂️?
@@flpedal2metal Considering the enormous cost of that project, I doubt that CSX would comply. I'm sure that the street running is what attracts the tourist trade. A reroute would devastate the town's business. I don't know what the current tax ratable is but CSX pays property tax to each municipality it travels through.
@@flpedal2metal Physically impossible, the area is all developed. There is no "out of town" to move it too.
I counted 96 cars on the 1st train. That matches the 396 axle count.
WOW...that was the largest float I've ever seen in a Christmas parade...LOL!!!
At least the train and parade were going the same direction. Can you imagine the chaos if they’d conflicted, especially if the train had shown up in the middle of the parade?!
I’ve seen videos where that’s happening in other areas😮
Town knows 80% of the trains are south bound. The only north bounds are fairly short trains or manifests with tankers carrying chemicals like chlorine which have a toxic or poison inhalation hazard.
@@perchlarkin That makes... very little sense. Unless the trains going northbound are like 5x the size... because every car that comes down has to go back up, right?
@@roadtrain_ they take a different route.. The chemicals which are toxic and poisonous if inhaled are not allowed on that route because portions lack PTC which I believe is positive track control.
I wonder if some of the folks thought that the train was part of the parade? That poor engineer had to be a nervous wreck for a few minutes. GREAT video !!
But he still had time to wave! One hand on the horn, the other out the window. :D The train crew got a very warm welcome, which was great to see!
Considering how often this happens, I don't see how it's not scheduled intentionally.
This is nearly unreal...I wonder how many new railfans there were after witnessing this...
Good morning JT - It does not get much better than this;Santa, Firetrucks and Trains! Locomotive engineer getting in on the action; LaGrange Kentucky is the best. Thanks JT
No parade is complete without a train, CSX, best part of the parade!
Hats off to the rail crews! Thanks for the hard work
Thanks for watching !
You got it 👍
While so many parts, so much of the world is in turmoil, is engaged in war - while so many are losing their homes and lives, it's GREAT to see so many people happy and engaged in peaceful community events: GOD Bless AMERICA and all who reside within this great land. Beautiful Street Trains. Great to see The Spirit of Christmas alive and well. Wonderful numbers of participants. Santa's arrival was awesome with the Fire Department lending a gracious hand. Great video. Thank you.

Morning and thanks for being here so fast!
Personal best in a 5K race was 32 yards (Cough). Excellent video JT! 🙂
Different to see a few US model trains (Ewhurst Green is my own UK 1950s based model).
More importantly so wonderful for the railroad to put on a real train especially for the town's parade (Coughs again). 😃
Keep up the good work! 👍
This looks like it would've been so much fun to be a part of. Everyone seemed like they were having the time of their lives. I love seeing stuff like this. So much positivity in the air
Woah. This is so cool! Seeing all the townsfolk just waving at the train as it passes by thru the parade. Makes it very wonderful to see that even a train can make a parade worth seeing.
The CSX train cutting thru the parade was really awesome. Great footage! Love all your videos. Keep it up.
That's what I call a great parade! Santa, fire engines and last but far from least, a train! Now that would be a great holiday tradition.
I'm traveling to the Light Up La Grange parade this year, with the hope that I might see such a great parade.
Other than the liability aspect, it would neat if they could integrate a short train into the festivities.
Come fo Santa, stay for the trains. Lol
Thanks for watching !
Even a turned off clock has the correct time 2 times a day. Sounds like the town didn't want to do what was necessary in time to halt scheduled trains for a while. It was a little nerve wracking watching the train go through the crowd.Nice museum and train display(s) tour.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm not sure the town could've stopped CSX if they wanted to, because well. CSX are rich. Still, the train was going slow, the tracks were blocked off and as long as nobody has a brain fart and decides to run infront of the train, that situation was perfectly safe and hella cool to watch.
Man this really shows how BIG locomotives are and and trains in general. Cool interruption!
1st - love the street running! Great video as always. Go ahead and start the video SON!

Dangit. I waited on that train. It pulled up just behind the museum about 9. Waited until 10 and it hadn't moved. Was hoping to see Jawtooth there as well. Looks like we missed it all by just a few hours. Had to get to our next destination though.

I'd actually start going to parades again if I knew there'd be at least one train!
Me too! that's why I went lol
I've never seen so many railfans watching a train. I bet they couldn't wait for that parade to get out of the way. 🚂😁👍🇺🇲
they could have been expecting a steam engine
CSX should have put a Christmas reef on the nose of that train that came by during the parade. 🎄
Virtual Railfan viewers be like, "Where's Jaw Tooth?"
JT, I can't say it enough. I freaking love your videos. This one in particular reminds me of when my dad used to take me train spotting as I was a kid. That's how he became a railfan.
It seems like every time you film in LaGrange, there's usually always more auto rack trains than mixed freight or intermodal trains. Both trains in this video were empty auto racks. I noticed that the second train made an exception to the "No Train Horn" ordinance and blew its horn due to the large crowd. It's rather hard to have a parade with a heavily traveled street running track in a town like LaGrange. Those model HO scale train layouts were pretty cool. Great video.
The horn blowing is permitted under the rule South bound there are 6 daily trains 3 are auto racks, 1 is inter modal, and 2 mixed freight manifests.
id not be surprised if lots of those empty auto racks are going to Philadelphia, It has a large auto terminal for its port which has direct access to a CSX yard.
@@filanfyretracker my belief is the first train is M217 which originates in Philadelphia. The second train is maybe M205. That one originates in Worcester MA. The trains terminate in Louisville which has a big Ford plant. The other auto racks is M209 which comes out of the Toledo area. It also ends up in Louisville. So they do have trains to and from Philadelphia. M216 northbound will sometimes go through La Grange.
Communication is the problem.to the answer. Nice catch on the first train I'm sure the crew was shocked to see no crazy driving or pedestrians running around. It seems like he Juiced the 25 mph limit a bit. Thanks for the behind the scenes look at the platform which does have a decent View along with the museum display and layout operation. A few weeks ago America's Funniest Home Videos had a clip at the end of the street trackage before it goes by the platform in which somebody in a car is backing up at various angles and seems flustered before finally cranking the wheel and driving away
The Virtual Railfan cameras here often catch cars doing wonky things. They regularly put out "grab bag" videos showing highlights of the past day or three, and oopsies in La Grange are not rare in those.
The track speed limit on the street-running section is 10 MPH.
@@jovetj This clip wasn't from the VR cameras. This was shot with a telephoto lens at street level looking towards downtown. They were standing down by the Curve across from the viewing platform a view not possible with the.VR cameras. Mercifully Kearny doesn't rate that high in terms of bad driving it seems tilted towards pedestrians and bicyclists

I love watching the live feed from La Grange but it's much better to see it from street level. This is a good-quality, interesting and fascinating view of the USA - thank you SuperJaw!
Beautiful parade made even better with a street running train! That's the first time I've heard that train horn blown so many times. That's because Lagrange has a no horn ordinance. What a pity, they don't know what they missing.
I used to have a house in a small town that was established as a water stop for the trains. I always loved the train horns (no quiet zones there), and when the trains didn't run, I would miss them, and I would have a hard time sleeping.
Grats on the Parade guys, I am sure everyone had lots of fun :D
God bless all those emergency response people, keeping everyone safe.
Well said!
So cool. Would have loved to be there for that. Loved how everyone applauded the train.
At least the folks stayed to see the Train at the Parade! Awesome Video JT! Send that to Wide World of Trains
A question from the UK. Did the rail track come first or the shops and houses? I find these huge trains running so close to people really scary, although your townsfolk seem to be so calm and comfortable with it.
The town was founded in 1827 so the shops came first it seems. There may be a story behind the tracks going down the middle, but over a hundred years ago, with no cars, there wouldn't be a huge inconvenience. Since everything came by rail back then it was probably a huge bonus to pull a boxcar in front of your shop to offload it.
@@freshdoug Yes, and the rail was a huge improvement from wagons pulled by horses, mules, and oxen. That is why towns fought fiercely for a rail line - only way to grow.
Great Video. But I agree with you that this is scary when there are so many people and young kids on the street. For this special day they should have sceduled the train a couple hours later or so.
I saw a similar video where another town was having their Christmas parade and they were going across the tracks and a train unexpectedly showed up and literally cut the parade in half so they had to wait forever just for the train to pass just so they can continue on
Very great video! Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷

Being a railfan and train driver, of course the train was the best part for me :D
I get a little thrill every time you stand so close to a moving train-and I am a lot envious, too! Been a railfan for 76 years (since I was three) and being able to be close to a train while it is moving has always been a wish of mine. Thanks for your great videos!
I’d wanted to be standing next to that first street running train as it goes by. And I’ve always wanted a model train set like that but my dad couldn’t afford it.
Model trains sure are expensive... rewarding but expensive. A cheaper alternative are virtual trains. There are many virtual train simulation games which can be very enjoyable.
Those are some really nice model railroad layout that they have. Must’ve taken a lot of time to put those all together

I love model trains…there was a place in Cypress Gardens (Florida) called Whistle Stop USA that was all model trains. It was very well done. Unfortunately Cypress Gardens is no more…it’s now a Lego Land.🙄
Cypress Gardens! I used to live near there in Winter Haven. Small world!
Thanks so much for the great video Jaw Tooth!! It was fun seeing La Grange from ground level as I've only ever seen the elevated Virtual Railfan camera view! The video came out great. Can see you and everything else very good.
You gotta love all those model trains and layouts!
La Grange seems like a good gig for Santa, Mrs. Claus and the reindeer. Santa and Mrs. C get to enjoy a celebrity ride in a fire truck. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph get to hang out in a La Grange bar and have a few hot Totties. I like like the 'concept' here in La Grange, Señor Jaws. Good one! RT sends, Puebla, México.
The engineer seemed to be getting into the spirit. The crowd was hooting and cheering the train just like it was part of the parade. NOTHING was going to spoil that festive holiday spirit right there....not even a freight train. AWESOME. Got to say though....it would have been one phone call to the railroad a few days in advance to say WE HAVE A PARADE between 6 - 7 PM and could you please hold any freight trains off that section for one hour ( or whatever the duration would be). Easy Peasy. Somehow it didn t get done. Dangerous as heck...but...it worked out O K.
Breakdown in communications between city officials and the railroad dispatcher . Usually the railroads will cooperate when Holiday Special Events are scheduled for events . Great video Jawtooth .
I just noticed that there were no articulated racks! That train in the parade wa COOL! They got into it by the looks of it.
So that's a little strange! Seems like their should be better coordination between the city and CSX regarding their scheduling of special events like this parade. Especially when, most people see police & fire and think "public safety". Same goes for the train crew, unless it's safe, don't proceed. Glad you were there to catch it on camera. Here's to you and yours, Have a Very Merry Christmas JT! And Happy Holiday's to all the railfans everywhere!
Pretty cool that the locals are completely comfortable with the street running trains, just accepting it as part of life in that town. Everyone seemed to take due care and stay out of the way, treating the train as just a part of the parade.
Actually, they're not very fond of it anymore because it interrupts daily life and people sleeping , they are in the works for relocating the line to a different place and get rid of this line that runs through the street in the near future.
People who comment complaining about these trains running through La Grange have an extremely poor understanding of the relationship between the town and the railroad. Truth is the town promotes the trains as an attraction for visitors
@@josephbennett3482 lol no they aren't. There's no news anywhere of that. La Grange promotes this street running on their website. It isn't going anywhere.

Jt another great video. How about telling your rail fans how the I SEE YOU D.P.U. FUNCTIONS . AND DOES IT EVER LOOSE THE SIGNAL TO FUNCTION ???
That Train needs to be using its Horn ALOT more. It should be BLASTING the Horn while going down that Track. Horns are used for SAFETY. Not using the Horns is just BAD and should result in being Fired from Job.
That was awesome... the way the engineer was waving had me laughing and the crowd cheering.
My god, the bass in your chest, the power, the lights, the plow.... Normally a fire truck is cool. If I was a kid I'd want a train after that not a fire truck.
Wait a minute. You stopped recording because music was playing from a float/firetruck and were worried about trademark issues? Ain't NO way you could get in any kind of trouble for filming that. They're playing it out in public and you are free to record anything or anyone out in public. Unless it has something to do with you making money off of UA-cam or something? If so that's still totally absurd.
I spotted you recording on the VRF cam. So, I was expecting a vid from you soon. All the best!
Is this a new tradition for csx this has happen every Christmas perade for Lagrange sence 2019
Have you ever seen a whole consist with no graffiti? I am always amazed at some of the artwork on the cars.
The trains must go through. Just like the mail delivery. Lol
CHRISTMAS PARADE TEMPORARILY TRAIN. APOLOGIES FOR THE CONVENIENCE.
That was pretty cool. Thanks Jawtooth!
Imagine if the train went through during the 5k. As a cross country runner that does a lot of 5Ks, I definitely would’ve been racing that thing down the street
Good to see all the people,,not wearing those stupid friggin masks and having fun!
I find the logistics of that train following the parade very interesting. What it seems like to me is that the people organizing the parade must have checked when trains would be coming through. They found out that a train would come heading the same direction of the parade at a good time for the parade too. It seems odd that there would be a train that close behind the parade without a good plan.
So did the parade organizers call CSX and say: "Hey, when that train comes through, can you tell them to just follow the fire trucks?" and CSX just said "Sure thing! We can do that." It seems rather unlikely to me. I think a big rail company like CSX would more likely tell the parade to wait.
However, the parade is following the path of the train tracks. Maybe CSX agreed to this plan because parade or not, the street was going to be packed with people. Even though both are obvious, the fire trucks would have an easier time getting people to move out of the way than that train. Perhaps CSX liked the idea of their train having a safety escort.
So, Jaw Tooth, do you know how that plan was worked out? I would like to know. Thanks!
@Turnerdeedo As a 28 year railroader this whole video was unscripted. Neither the town or the CSX planned any of this
Thanks for that. We stay at LAG a lot going to TN and back. You need to check out Dough Baby Donuts in the AM. I need to go check out that new Pavilion and see the Layouts in the Depot Museum. Was always closed for the virus last couple years.
