2:13 Well, actually they kinda did. You see, when the first Godzilla film was released in Japan in November of 1954, audiences all over the country loved it, with lines to get in the theaters spanning blocks down the street, but the critics reviews of the film were extremely mixed with a few critics considering it to be a masterpiece like everybody today, but most of the critics back then gave it a really low rating essentially saying the same thing; that it was really weird to see a monster movie be taken so seriously.
22:40 - yeah, this is why I don't give a rat's ass about mainstream critics and their opion, and judge things myself. Even Ebert made some huge mistakes.
Anyone else feel like they were watching The Thing for a moment when the radio operator got swiveled around in his chair, like the Norwegian radio operator?
Dude I’m right there with you. I was born in 1980 and there wasn’t easy access to a lot of Godzilla movies in the 80s especially if you were a little kid. I remember seeing the movie poster for this movie at the theater where we lived growing up and I remember wanting to see that movie so bad and my parents rented it when it came out on VHS and it was my first Godzilla movie and made me a fan for life. I didn’t know it back then but I was watching one of the best Godzilla films ever made. Since it was my first Godzilla movie I ever saw I didn’t care that there wasn’t a second monster for him to fight and as a kid he was probably only six or seven years old there were parts of this movie that terrified me but I still loved Godzilla in this movie. This was the film that made me bug my parents for the next few years To help me find as many Godzilla movies as I could.
Another interesting thing to note about Godzilla’s suit design in this film is that he has his ears back, which he hasn’t had since the first suit design in the first two movies.
Mid-showa had a steady stream of kids watching these movies, while Final Wars was not only ignored by the general audience who were sick of monster movies released every year since 89(Godzilla went on hiatus in '95, but Gamera carried the torch in the interim, with it's own masterpiece of a trilogy), but also the actual fandom REALLY hated it at release. The interest wasn't there and shit reviews from critics and fans alike snowballed into the one of the worst bombs the series ever saw(doesn't help that it's still the most expensive one in the series). While Toho damage controlled stating that they're just going on a 10 year hiatus, it's pretty clear that if not for the not-so-modest success of the American Reboot - they wouldn't touch the franchise again.
TheKain202 “Wouldn’t touch the franchise again?” It doesn’t matter how bad a Godzilla movie might bomb, there’s never going to be a time when Toho abandons the series. I mean, come on, they already made over 30 movies you think they’re gonna stop because of one failure?
Yea he's way too popular and an icon to just abandon after on L. Take a break every now and then so people don't get sick of it or bored but always nice to bring it back after awhile
In my case Godzilla 1984 was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw, They just dubbed the original over here after Godzilla 1985 was made in the USA. The next Godzilla I saw was "Ebirah, Horror of the Deep." And since 1984 ended with Godzilla in a Volcano and Ebirah started with Godzilla enclosed in a mountain I assumed it to be the actual continuation, which made freeing Godzilla seem a bit callous on the protagonists site.
I saw this when I was really young. Having already seen the goofy fun loving Godzilla films. (Godzilla's Revenge, Godzilla Vs Megalon, Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla, King Kong Vs Godzilla) It scared the crap outta me! I appreciate it now, its one of my favs.
This is another one of my favorite flicks. In fact, I like all of the 80's, and 90's Godzilla movies. I can still remember the night that I was at a local 7-11 and there on the VHS rental rack was a copy of Godzilla 1985. I didn't hesitate and quickly grabbed it and proceeded to watch it as soon as I got home and enjoyed every minute of it. Good times.
Raymond Burr was edited into the original American version of Godzilla AND the 80s reboot? lol that is nothing if not consistent. Raymond Burr. Interrupting Japanese monster movies since 1954.
Godzilla is how I discovered this channel. Well, the original one. Then here. Details. Anyway, I stuck around because I enjoy all of the reviews. So I would like to see another Godzilla review, but I can wait awhile. My suggestion for next the Godzilla review is Final Wars. I enjoy it, but its batshit crazy.
The Dr. Pepper plug reminded me of a scene from Godzilla v. Megalon in which there is a scene with several model kits in the background by the company, Tamiya. Tamiya is one of two of the major model kit companies in Japan, the other being Hasegawa. If Tamiya did help fund the movie, it might have been the first time a model kit company helped fund or sponsor a movie.
"Meanwhile in The Hunt For Red October..." That slayed me, dude. The Return of Godzilla is one of my top three Big G films. I understand why people tend to dismiss the re-edit, but I still have great affection for ol G-1985. It's trashy fun. I wore that VHS out. I was probably the only kid who preferred the serious Godzilla movies over the big monster brawls.
I agree. This was my introduction to Godzilla when I was 5. I rented it every time my dad took us to rent movies. God bless my dad he always let me rent it and always watched it with me. Lol
Jason Fonz I think the first Godzilla movie I saw was either godzilla vs king kong, destroy all monsters, or godzilla 1985. ya not sure which one I saw first since the syfy channel showed a bunch of them when I was kid.
Jason Fonz Off topic has Brandon review any of the Jurassic park movies? Cause I don't know think he did. Also Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom is going to be fun.
I love how the 2016 release restored some of the original content, but the two issues I do have with it are 1.) the dub actors weren't as convincing as they were in this version, and 2.) i miss some of the music from this version (the russian sub scene and Mr. Martins theme). Still a good release though...
Godzilla 1985 was my first too. Really enjoy this one, the score is so atmospheric, the prime minister scenes are intense (not in the american cut, God no) and the effects work is really good with the models (Teruyoshi Nakano, dude who made the 1970s films, finally got a healthy budget to work with). This and biollante really set a good presidence and took a more grounded yet still scifi filled approach. ...too bad they kind of threw that all out the window with time travel in after biollante
Subbed. Really enjoy your outlook, and I can relate to a lot of the childhood love for the more scary, serious "Godzilla: 1985" as a kid in the US who could only get VHS copies of Megalon, Gigan, and the Sea Monster. '85 was a welcome change in tone that made Godzilla "cool." I'll be checking out some of your other videos for sure!
i remember back in 85 i was trying to watch this and my mom and my uncle william kept criticizing the movie from start til finish even hating on raymond burr baby boomers can be crazy. i will get this on dvd without any player hating
Yea my family tends to make fun of these movies too. The one and only time I've seen someone smile while watching 1954 gojira-it was tuff growing up a Godzilla fan
The 1st rule of Gozilla movies that everyone seems to have forgotten: It's not a Godzilla movie unless there is a guy in a rubber dinosaur suit knocking over paper mache buildings.
I always wish there was a super cut that had the best of both versions. For example the ending credit music in the original is better, but the English version had a good speech from Burr at the end, as well as a disturbing scream of G as he fell into the volcano.
While I’ve always had somewhat mixed feelings about The whole “guy in a suit” effect that Toho uses for pretty much every version of Godzilla (for some reason the face always looks a little too derpy to me), I gotta give the ‘Heisei’ period Godzilla movies serious credit. Yeah, they all have their flaws, but they’ve also got a definite place in my heart. The one with Godzilla and Mothra fighting an evil space Mothra was the first G-movie I ever saw. It was the REALLY early 2000’s, I was somewhere between 10 and 12, I was visiting my Aunt and she let me pick a movie from Blockbuster for us to watch. I picked that one, in all of its badly-dubbed VHS-tape glory. Then, over a decade later, I saw Pacific Rim and Godzilla 2014 in the same week and went on a slight Kaiju movie binge for a few months. Along with a box set of Gojira and 5-6 other early G-movies, I picked up a few others from the Heisei and Millennium periods. This was all within a few months of me being legally able to buy alcohol, so I was usually buzzed while watching these and don’t remember any of them all that well. With one exception: Godzilla Vs. Biolante. And I love that movie. One minute there’s a weird spy subplot with some absolutely GLORIOUS Engrish (with Japanese subtitles!!), the next, I’m watching one of the best practical effect monster fights I’ve ever seen. Biolante was just fucking awesome, fight me, nerds. But regardless of the quality of the films themselves, I’ll always adore Heisei period Godzilla movies for one reason nobody can deny: they all had some of the most FUCKING *METAL* posters ever made.
Originally, New World reportedly planned to re-write the dialogue in order to turn the film into a tongue-in-cheek comedy (à la What's Up, Tiger Lily?), but this plan was reportedly scrapped because Raymond Burr expressed displeasure at the idea, taking the idea of Godzilla as a nuclear metaphor seriously. The only dialogue left over from that script was "That's quite an urban renewal program they've got going over there", said by Major McDonough.
See, that's the problem with most American Critics. They'll hate on something just because of one of two things. 1. It's a foreign film 2. It doesn't fit their preferences. Complete bias.
Remember, John Carpenter's "The Thing" and Ridley Scott's "Legend" were also films of the 80's that were hated by critics but became cult classics, so it's safe to say critics at the time weren't very reliable sources

The inevitable American remake would star Alex Jones as himself!
Slam Bus Rodan yes!
They should have had this guy cameo in the Heisei series just like the guy with the booze in the Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, and For Your Eyes Only.
Missed opportunity Toho!
If they could have just made the eyes look more realistic, this would've probably been the best Godzilla suit of all.
Oh and btw, Japanese Larry King @ 5:36
2:13 Well, actually they kinda did. You see, when the first Godzilla film was released in Japan in November of 1954, audiences all over the country loved it, with lines to get in the theaters spanning blocks down the street, but the critics reviews of the film were extremely mixed with a few critics considering it to be a masterpiece like everybody today, but most of the critics back then gave it a really low rating essentially saying the same thing; that it was really weird to see a monster movie be taken so seriously.
I forgot that scene with the crying girl was in the original and am now disturbed
Yeah, I still get really uncomfortable every time that clip shows up in one of his reviews.
BE MORE FUNNY!
For those who say Godzilla is only campy schlock, they have to be forced to watch Gojira in a similar method to the Ludovico technique

I got the DVD, and it's better than Leonard Maltin says. And I HATE Dr. Pepper! The girl was a babe, though.

Definitely the best roar, way scarier
Brandon yelling "BE MORE FUNNY!" at the footage of the crying baby is hilarious! And far funnier than anything in any the "funny" Godzilla movies.
Japanese Charles Bronson lol.

I shown my dad that guy, Even got a kick out on the joke! this dude looks almost Charles Bronson.
There's a slight resemblance, yeah.
That Flock of Seagulls gag was gold. 😂
0:31 hold on you are telling me that Godzilla Final wars made less money than Godzilla's Revenge ?!
What type of logic is this?!
Everyone: Ugh there’s too many giant monster movies
Also people: Yes, another Marvel movie!
I was honestly surprised toyko sos is so far down, I may be biased but I swear toyko sos is one of the best acted and shot, and effects
Hmm.. 1985 was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw in the theaters.. and I still enjoy it.
This my 1st Godzilla movie...That scared I was four years old. I still love to this day.
If I was old enough I would give $500 right now if the next Godzilla review came out later today.
Raymond Burr was only not being a helper because if they used the Oxygen Destroyer again, Dr. Serizawa’s secret would be found out.
" And I ran... " Knew it was coming and ya still pulled it off. Well done. Very well done indeed.
I thought this movie was quite good.
Sure, this is the American dub of this movie. Have you seen the original Japanese version?
What? This version is good.

The first Godzilla film I ever saw as well. It really presents him as a true force of nature. Love this movie.
8:18 - Who's that sexy sounding commercial announcer for Coca Cola? He sounds like a man that the ladies would want to get with *hint-hint*.
This was also my 1st Godzilla movie. I honestly cried as they dropped him into the volcano. So glad to see someone cover this one. :-)
Me too, every time. Honeslty held it back just watching the end in this review
This was also the first Godzilla movie I saw, and is also one of my favourites.

THAT DAMN TAIL!
so when's the next godzilla movie review. and by the way I love the "I ran so far away" reference and yay gojifan93 made a cameo
This is by far the best movie out of all of them in my opinion. Such an impact on my childhood
I agree. This was my introduction to Godzilla when I was 5. I rented it every time my dad took us to rent movies. God bless my dad he always let me rent it and always watched it with me. Lol

18:50 scored 100% for timing. Good job great. Good work. Keep it up.
I love how the 2016 release restored some of the original content, but the two issues I do have with it are 1.) the dub actors weren't as convincing as they were in this version, and 2.) i miss some of the music from this version (the russian sub scene and Mr. Martins theme).
Still a good release though...
7:09 - hey, it's getting funnier already - there's Ron Burgundy!
Whether acting or not... honestly the emotional laugh talking at the orphan part is surprisingly good
I saw this a bunch of times in the theaters, when it first came out!
I thought it was the best movie, ever!
Not everyone was into Godzilla, back then.
'85 was a welcome change in tone that made Godzilla "cool."
I'll be checking out some of your other videos for sure!
I wonder if Leonard Malton has ever seen the original 1954 film.
He probably did when it was released nationwide in... 2004 or so, was it?
You’re so savage in your videos. This makes me wanna check out your other reviews! Great work!

That is problematic
The 1st rule of Gozilla movies that everyone seems to have forgotten: It's not a Godzilla movie unless there is a guy in a rubber dinosaur suit knocking over paper mache buildings.
So does that mean the Monsterverse movies and Shin/Resurgence don’t count.
14:08 Well Brandon, believe or not they announced a Godzilla vs Evangelion ride opening at Universal Studios Japan this year.
Oh hell no, is you
Whatever in your king Kong games review video I'm really a fan of the nes and snes and not genesis ( expect dreamcast, Sega pico and game gear)
I always wish there was a super cut that had the best of both versions. For example the ending credit music in the original is better, but the English version had a good speech from Burr at the end, as well as a disturbing scream of G as he fell into the volcano.
Ask and you shall receive.

@@D2Kprime man this is amazing. Thanks a bunch man.
'Oh Shit It Worked' hearing that and seeing the look on this guy's face was really freaking hilarious and also priceless.
That scream of Godzilla at the end will always haunt me
I honestly really love the movie was never a fan of the comical era of godzilla
Best Godzilla roar. By far. I dig the Millennium roar, as well.
See, that's the problem with most American Critics. They'll hate on something just because of one of two things.
1. It's a foreign film
2. It doesn't fit their preferences.
Complete bias.
kinda reminds me of The Oscars
Patrick Campbell the last Oscars or the Oscars from back then?
I suspect the Oscars were probably fair in some way back then (feel free to correct me on that), so the last Oscars
Remember, John Carpenter's "The Thing" and Ridley Scott's "Legend" were also films of the 80's that were hated by critics but became cult classics, so it's safe to say critics at the time weren't very reliable sources
Just Americans? I feel it’s more of a Everybody situation
Hold up, your telling me Son of Godzilla made more money in the box office than *GODZILLA (2014)?!*
I know this is an old video. I'm re watching. This was my first Godzilla movie. I didn't know the past or anything and I liked this one. It still has some tension that the recent ones don't have.
