Fun fact: Quite a few of the animators from Rankin/Bass's original animated works, outsourced to Japan, went on to form this little studio you might not have heard of...Studio Ghibli.
Yes --it would make sense as one of his regenerated forms, at least in a movie production. There were two Dr. Who movies made around this time. Or at least he could be cast as The Master.
This film actually combines 3 series in 1: "King Kong" (obvious), "Doctor Who" (the villain is dressed very much like William Hartnell, right down to the wooly Russian hat he had in "The War Machines"...and Hartnell reportedly once suggsted the idea of an evil SON of The Doctor, who he might also play), and... "VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OFTHE SEA"... U.N. reseach submarine whose commander is named "Nelson". In the 1961 feature film, early on, they race to the U.N., just as they did in here! Rhodes Reason's twin brother Rex was the star of "THIS ISLAND EARTH".
Susan in this movie reminds me of Alice Eve or Nicole Kidman in Paddington. New Edits: I met the actor who played Susan, Linda Jo Miller at G-Fest 2023, and she's so cool and charming! She also said that that shot of her jumping into the water and around Tokyo Tower was a stunt double, but she still in the Kong hand props for the rest of those scenes. I suppose King Kong is the original american kaiju. He's the only giant american monster that can compete with the japanese giant monsters. Why did we have to get a giant monkey and they get the atomic fire breathing lizard?
Despite the lack of dinosaurs I think Kong 76 is pretty good. On a different point I always found it weird that on an island with dinosaurs and tons of gigantic animals the only thing people pay attention to is an oversized ape. There is so much unused potential in just making a Skull Island series of films (or maybe tv show) without Kong and just keeping it to other monsters there.
They did make a skull island series and focused heavily on the other monsters and King Kongs biggest roll was as a secondary character in the last episode
This has always been one of my favorites, just a lot of fun from beginning to end. I love everything that came out of Toho during this period, all their films made for classic Saturday matinee type movies, great for late night tv.

I added it to my classic Toho collection last year,. In your face Bass and Rankin. Thanks Brandon. You give a unique perspective as an adult nerd.
Are you sure the villain isn't THE Dr. Who? I mean, he has the hat of William Hartnell, the facial structure of Patrick Troughton, the cape of John Pertwee and the eyebrows or Peter Capaldi.
Ahhh yes, I remember this movie and I even own the Blu-ray. It is a guilty pleasure for me: legendary voice actor Paul Frees dubbing Eisei Amamoto (later seen as the toymaker in Godzilla's Revenge), the always awesome Akira Takarada, Akira Ifukube's wonderful score (especially the theme whenever Kong and Susan are together), and of course the matte paintings and miniature sets. What isn't there to like?
Indeed we are; I think the most information I ever got about Godzilla was David Kalat's audio commentaries on the Criterion Collection release of Godzilla (1954). Definitely a must listen ^.^
Matthew Wolfstein oh yeah... that's where I learned the right way of pronouncing "Gojira".. the Japanese way of saying Godzilla is 'Goh-zee-lah'. that's the right way of saying Gojira, not how it's spelled out.. that's it was originally translated to 'Godzilla', from Goh-zee-lah.. feel me?...
I saw this movie once on Turner classic when I was a little kid and fell in love with it couldn’t find a copy until I went to the mall one day. Not a masterpiece but definitely one of my favorite non-Godzilla Toho films. Also I would love it if Mechani-Kong came back one day!
oh yeah.. . King Kong Escapes was def cheesy, but still was the shit... that def was one of my classics coming up.. I agree, you should def do War Of The Gargantuas... That one was actually a pretty good old school kaiju joint. ..
Hell yes, Frankenstein Conquers! Unlike King Kong vs Godzilla, FCTW did in fact have two endings, and like A*P*E, it features a toy farm animal! Plus there's the whole insane mad-scientist-primary-color-test-tubes-monster-heart-submarine-bombing-Hiroshima-transplant-operation-nuclear-bombing-victim-cannibalism set-up to make the most jaded head spin.
Self Elevation Gargantuas (war of) the American version cutting all the hints and dialog to Frankenstein was AWSEOME....don't get me wrong Frankenstein's Monster (Karloff /Strange) is my ALL TIME FAVORITE Monster. .but putting him against Japanese giant monsters. .noooooooooo...now Godzilla vs The Wolfman (no man just giant Wolf Monster ) was on the right track!!!!
From what I understand, Madame Piranha (Mie Hama's character) is supposed to be North Korean, but the filmmakers were evidently afraid to name-drop the country directly.
It gets more complicated when Godzilla himself is inspired by King Kong. AND Mechagodzilla is based on Mechanikong! BEST Dr Who Ever Last year at G-Fest in Rosemont Illinois, they had a reunion of Akira Takarada and Linda Miller.
Brandon reminds me of Cinema Snob except entertaining and not making me fall asleep. I'm not even trolling, Snobs reviews bore me so hard that I fall asleep, and I mean every time.
Yes! Her and fellow Only Live Twice star Akiko Wakabayashi were rising Toho Stars (you may remember them in What's Up Tiger Lily) and appeared in King Kong vs Godzilla together and Wakabayashi starred in Ghidorah the three Headed monster. Sadly, Wakabayashi suffered a serious injury and retired from acting while Hama's star went into decline with the rest of the Japanese film industry in the 70s.
That’s Julie Bennett, voice of Cindy Bear, as the dub voice of the female lead and the femme fatale and Paul Frees as Dr. Who. Must have been part of the Rankin/Bass deal since they don’t usually get cartoon voice actors for dubs of live action films.
Its been years since I last saw this classic but rarely screened Toho King Kong gem. Another highly entertaining review, thanks, Brandon... If you care to drop down a few notches in quality, try the 1982 stitch-up from an EJ Tsuburaya TV series, 'Attack of the Super Monsters'. It's got a talking super-IQ, mind controlling T-Rex, clay-mation and rubber suit monsters and animated animal cruelty.
This is an awesome King Kong movie. Susan is probably the hottest chick in a Kong movie. Awesome soundtrack in this movie. A robot Kong It was great being a kid watching this on tv
They used to replay this heavily on a local channel in the 70s, when I was around 10 years old. One of the greatest disappointments of my young life was that we never got to see Mecha-zilla and Mechani-Kong together.

Oh shut up!
@@Tareltonlives Nah!
congrates on making it this far, bro. Keep crushing it!
I saw this in the theater. I love it but I don’t know why. The tank commanders strategic withdrawal was my favorite part.

Gorosaurus: look what happened
Are you sure the villain isn't THE Dr. Who? I mean, he has the hat of William Hartnell, the facial structure of Patrick Troughton, the cape of John Pertwee and the eyebrows or Peter Capaldi.
New subscriber binge-watching... Laughed out loud at getting the Kong Plushie joke 😂! Really enjoying your videos - you do a great job. 🤓
So that's where Mechani-Kong is from! I've loved that design since I was a kid, but never knew exactly what movie I'd seen it in!
6:44 The classic hard thing hitting another hard thing sound effect, makes me laugh in this video every time :)
That scene doesn't feel right without that sound effect, it's so comedically timed

ROTFLMMFAO!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE THIS JOKE FOR A LONG TIME!!
I can agree, I totally lost it at that part of the video.
Goji73 Snake: I'm gonna get you (Dong.) Doh!
Still the best 1973
Classic Hanna-Barbera sound effects.
that bonk sound effect never gets old

Holy shit! I haven’t heard the term Laotian outside of a Vietnam War documentary since Uncommon Valor... a Vietnam War movie.
Bone up on your Indochina history :)
@@Tareltonlives Welcome to the world of geopolitics buffs and history buffs
Ahhh yes, I remember this movie and I even own the Blu-ray. It is a guilty pleasure for me: legendary voice actor Paul Frees dubbing Eisei Amamoto (later seen as the toymaker in Godzilla's Revenge), the always awesome Akira Takarada, Akira Ifukube's wonderful score (especially the theme whenever Kong and Susan are together), and of course the matte paintings and miniature sets. What isn't there to like?
Matthew Wolfstein you remind me of myself.. Lol. . we're def into our Godzilla/Toho movies, aren't we?... Lol... .
Indeed we are; I think the most information I ever got about Godzilla was David Kalat's audio commentaries on the Criterion Collection release of Godzilla (1954). Definitely a must listen ^.^
Matthew Wolfstein oh yeah... that's where I learned the right way of pronouncing "Gojira".. the Japanese way of saying Godzilla is 'Goh-zee-lah'. that's the right way of saying Gojira, not how it's spelled out.. that's it was originally translated to 'Godzilla', from Goh-zee-lah.. feel me?...
That was a great part of the commentary. In fact, a lot of the information from the two commentaries are well worth storing in one's head.
Matthew Wolfstein agreed!.. . . .those commentaries def gave a lot of good info!. . .
I saw this movie once on Turner classic when I was a little kid and fell in love with it couldn’t find a copy until I went to the mall one day. Not a masterpiece but definitely one of my favorite non-Godzilla Toho films. Also I would love it if Mechani-Kong came back one day!
The villain also played Doctor Shinigami in Kamen Rider.
6:37 You know what I love about Kong There always seems to be a rock whenever he needs one :D That QB skills on point.
I just stumbled upon your channel, and I love it! Great content, great humor, I had to subscribe. Keep up the great work.
I loved how they added gorosaurus from the older godzilla movies, it was a nice collab type thing
I lost it when the Dr Who theme started playing at 3:24 hahahahaha
Who?
Fun fact: he was supposed to be in destroy all monsters but since toho licence for king kong expired the follow year in 1968 they couldn’t use him
oh yeah.. . King Kong Escapes was def cheesy, but still was the shit... that def was one of my classics coming up.. I agree, you should def do War Of The Gargantuas... That one was actually a pretty good old school kaiju joint. ..
or frankenstein conquers the world
Hell yes, Frankenstein Conquers!
8:59
I like Kong's secondary roar (which we barely heard in King Kong vs. Godzilla).
I like to think that Kong (2017) is related to King Kong Escapes than the original King Kong.
Marshami absolutely.
And Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) is related to King Kong Escapes (1967).
I can just imagine Brandon saying somthing like; "Does this count as doing another Godzilla movie since it's technically made by Toho?"
From what I understand, Madame Piranha (Mie Hama's character) is supposed to be North Korean, but the filmmakers were evidently afraid to name-drop the country directly.
16:42 "Get the ship, Kong! Kill everyone aboard, Kong! Sink that bitch to the ocean floor, Kong!" ~ Susan
It gets more complicated when Godzilla himself is inspired by King Kong. AND Mechagodzilla is based on Mechanikong!
BEST Dr Who Ever
Last year at G-Fest in Rosemont Illinois, they had a reunion of Akira Takarada and Linda Miller.
The movie is good until the overlong defeat of Dr Who. Just have Mia Hama kill him or have them kill each other while Kong saves the girl.
Isn't that commander Rhodes Reason? Same year he played a gladiator in Star Trek, I believe.
6:48 We need more of ecstasy Kong
I love your humor for this film. Easily some of your best!
Brandon reminds me of Cinema Snob except entertaining and not making me fall asleep. I'm not even trolling, Snobs reviews bore me so hard that I fall asleep, and I mean every time.
Is Asian fashionista Bond girl Mie Hama from You Only Live Twice?!!?!

Bizarre!
Hey Brandon, i love your reviews of these old Kaiju movies! i loved them as a kid and now i have to go back and watch them. keep up the good work!! :)
What an underrated incarnation of the doctor
That’s Julie Bennett, voice of Cindy Bear, as the dub voice of the female lead and the femme fatale and Paul Frees as Dr. Who. Must have been part of the Rankin/Bass deal since they don’t usually get cartoon voice actors for dubs of live action films.

At times...this male actor sound like the late Leslie Nielsen.
This is one of your funniest reviews, Brandon.
I saw this at the theater when I was about 7. It was cool...when I was 7.
Groundbreaking scientific discoveries should always be reported to the UN first, got it!
Let's not forget that Hayata from Ultraman is working as an evil goon in this film.
Intrestingly your sign language joke became cannon in godzilla vs kong.
Even as a little kid, I thought Susan was a smoke show. Good job, younger me. Our instincts served us well.
Susan looks quite cute.

Awesome soundtrack in this movie.

It was great being a kid watching this on tv
They used to replay this heavily on a local channel in the 70s, when I was around 10 years old. One of the greatest disappointments of my young life was that we never got to see Mecha-zilla and Mechani-Kong together.
Watched this a lot as a kid. The chick in it was hot!
MrAitraining which one the American girl of the Japan girl
Amir Bagherzadeh yes
Linda Miller? She's active on facebook and it's the cutest darn thing I swear
She has a very sweet adorable personality.
Damn the 60s had some real babes.
