      LOL, NOPE, he left the WHEEL On while taking the hub off, NO ONE DOES THAT..you always take the wheel off FIRST..so you don't have to deal with the excess weight and Bulk. Sad.

    This is the video to watch for service of bearings,after several break downs and expensive gouging at repair shops from Morehead City to Wilson NC I learned to not only service and change my bearings, but to have spare parts for everything,people like you who post these helpful videos should be commended.

    Thank you so much. This is a great “ how to “ video. I have helped my dad do this many times but always had the ability to ask him any questions. He passed away last year but the family and I are taking his boat on a road trip next month. I know at least one wheel needs new bearings and now I have the confidence to do the job. Thanks again.

    I was intimidated to tackling this project but I didn't really know where to take my utility trailer for service. I decided to do it myself and this video was spot on. I had to ruin my seal when removing, but I was replacing anyhow. Original bearings are 14yrs old, I thought that's pushing it on age, so hopefully these will last another 14yrs. Thanks again - perfect video

    I've probably watched a dozen UA-cam videos on this subject over the last couple days as I begin a first-time project to replace my bearings. Your video is by far the best out there. Your explanations were clear and you had great camera angles. Thanks for putting out such an informative and well done video.

    Hi Mr. Dustin Hoover. I have studied your video taking my own notes carefully as this is easier way I can learn but it covers everything that you said so I can print it out while following your video offline and downloaded. I thank you for your in detail step by step task. Though this video is old, it clearly is outstanding and looking forward to doing this project soon. The one thing I seen a bit different is when you were announcing the initial tools, other tools you did not announce at first was announced during the actual job but that is okay as I taken careful notes and added them to my notes. I already started purchasing the tools and thank you for your education. I hope you have more videos I can review and follow, I will check them all out. God bless you Justin and thank you kindly sir.

      @@boatus , thank you kindly, I started getting new tools today and doing studies on it a bit more before taking on this task. I had a stroke a few months from PTSD overseas a few months ago so my learning is a lot more difficult than a normal human now of days unfortunately. I will have this video and my notes as back up but the ultimate goal is to get my brain focusing again from the stroke. May I suggest that boat USA sorta mimick such videos for a variety of task please? I know that video was years ago but the explanation of every aspect was indeed excellent. The only problem he did was not announce every tool he utilized while covering what tools was needed. I am happy to of caught on to this but it would increase the companies sales on tool orders during a time the economy is not great and people need to learn small things like this to continue to boat in our waters. It does for me anyhow with being legally disabled after my deployment, thank you.

      @@supportyourtroopsathletes6460 Thank you for your service, and I wish you all the best in your recovery. I love that you are doing projects such as these to help improve your physical and mental health. It should be very satisfying to complete it!
      As you noted, this video was done many years ago, and there are a lot of things that could be done better from a production end. We have a very different process now that requires detailed outlines and approvals (and a producer on-site to ensure we don't miss anything). And we also try to put links to tools and materials used in the video description. We still create a lot of step-by-step how-tos along with other types of boating videos. (Our series of gelcoat repair videos is a perfect example.) That said, I do very much appreciate your excellent reminder, and that will certainly factor in to future videos. (I take all feedback seriously!)
      We have been talking about updating this video, which I believe would address your recommendations. In the meantime, check out our article that was done in conjunction with this video: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2013/october/repacking-or-replacing-your-trailer-tire-bearings It has all the same steps plus photos for each and a full list of tools and materials you'll need. It might be easier to print out and bring with you while you're doing the project than trying to recall all the steps from the video (while also decoding your notes). Hope this helps, and let us know how it goes!

      @@boatus thank you and thank you for your kind words. Currently, I am waiting for the rest of my new tools to come in currently. I am not sure how to size up the wheel bearings just yet however after doing some measurements on the outer of the bearing buddy prior to removal 11/16 seems to be the closest feasible option that I have unless you may have a suggestion. Though I have most tools in, I just do not want to remove it untill I do. I am proud to say that I memorized every part of this video completely and looking forward to getting started here soon. I noticed a couple differences in tools such as the metal hammer on this video to the soft hammer on the link you provided but that was the main thing. The gasket puller was not mentioned in either but I ordered that anyhow. The race drivers was not mentioned at the start of this video nor mentioned yet was shown during the video and in the case at the start of the video. May I ask you however just to be sure before entering this project, by measuring the external dust cap or bearing buddy. Is that a good indicator on what size bearings to order once again?

    I’ve watched a lot of videos on this...yours was the 9th or so result down and no one else showed the use of the race tool which is exactly what I needed to see because I put mine in flush with hub and the wheel wouldn’t go on and I couldn’t figure out why....now I know you have to get that one pushed down in.
    Great work and thank you for this video.

    Excellent job! I have watched a lot of video's on how to adjust the bearing torque. Your's is the only one that recommends a very slight amount of play which is the proper way to set the bearings. As for having the wheel on before tightening the nut, this allow a much better feel to adjust the slack. I always check the play with the tire on. Not leaving a slight amount of play is the best way to burn up a bearing. I've done hundreds of bearings and always back off the nut until I can grab the top of the tire and feel a very slight amount of movement. Very good job. I hope people realize, a slight amount of play is what you are shooting for.

      +Russell Devane Well, I am sure your quite used to being wrong, and here you are wrong again. I gave it a thumbs down because there is no possible excuse for leaving all of that grease on the back of the wheel. After about 1 week of driving you will not be able to tell of the grease is new, or old. Just no excuse for that. Otherwise he did a great job. What a weird place to cut a corner...

    Nice to see a how-to UA-cam video done by a real mechanic. Correct application of force is essential, and well explained here. I would tend to take the wheel off first (per the recommendation below) but a matter of style. There may be a buildup of corruption/corrosion between the wheel and the hub, and doesn't hurt to check. But Dustin makes it work his way.

    Love it! I just got a brand new tandem axle EZ Loader trailer with the boat I cought and I'm looking at the wheels and thinking to myself "damn, I need to know how to change the bearings on this thing or even just understand how they look like just to have the know-how", and now, not only do I know what the inside looks like, I feel pretty damn comfortable tackling this operation on my own. Just gotta go buy that bearing packer kit and race installing tool and I'm good to go.
    First thing I need to do, though, is jack the trailer up to check for any noises. Great tip and what a difference from the original wheel noise to after you replaced and repacked the bearings! Thanks for an awesome and informative video.

    Great video and the first I've seen that demonstrated what a bad bearing sounds and looks like. Good job. I also thought that the bearing grease looked a little milky on the initial disassembly and might have been worth mentioning ( or it could have been that extra beer I consumed while going thru several videos ) . I hope to produce some 'how-to' videos in the future and hope that I can do near the great job that you have presented. The fishing line into the bearing seal is another observation that I'm glad you mentioned, (who would-a-thunk-it). Yes I agree with the reviewer who felt you should find a sponsor.
    Great job... Thanks

    I like how u used a bearing packer too. And I swear by that green trailer grease you used. I always check my bearings like u did for sound.
    Also if towing I stop after about 10 mins to check them for heat. Replaced lots of failed bearings on trailers that I bought but luckily never had one fail yet (knock wood).
    Oh, I usually use a piece of wood to drive the other wheel up on instead of jacking it.

    Great vid I personally don’t use bearing buddies they allow water in I’ve done wheel bearings for years I use sealed caps and some sealant on cap to prevent water in.
    Then make sure to put some grease on your lugs so they don’t rust
    And I usually just replace the whole hub just easier and cost effective .

I would have done only two things differently in this setting: Prepping better by cleaning all areas around the parts being serviced and, though it seems leaving the tire on the hub helps with aspects of handling et cetera, I'd remove the tire for multiple personal reasons but most importantly the risk of the seal being damaged during reassembly. This video is really a big help for those who may lack confidence related to performing this task. I'd point anyone (who asked me about this maintenance task) at this video. Again, this is good. For the dude who might wish to criticize my observations, try to understand that I spent years rebuilding industrial refrigeration compressors in both marine and commercial applications...know a thing or two about bearings, seals and the importance of cleanliness around highly engineered moving-part surfaces. Press on.

    Best part of this video they use MARINE GREASE... Not regular grease. Knew some one who didn't use it. After a couple months regular launch use with a new wheel hub. The entire assembly fell off going down the road.

    where did you put the jack to lift up the trailer at the beginning of the video? on the frame?

    • @boatus

      Hi Pablo. Yes, on the frame. As Dusty says, you want to find a solid area on the frame and not on any springs or anything that can bend.

    Would you rather new grease 2 spin slow drag of almost a wobble for pin setting?

    Can you replace a full width seal with a half height one? Would you still only tap in a half height seal so that it is flush with the hub?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the question, Mr. Charlie. I’m not exactly sure when you talk of a half-height seal. I can only imagine that you are considering using a single lip seal rather than a double lip seal, in which case I would caution against it. Boat trailer bearings lead a tough life. Especially when you consider that they get warm with the boat rolling down the road, then you dunk them into cold water while you launch the boat which cools the hub, makes the air contract and suck water past the seal and into the bearing - a double lip seal avoids this. My advice would be to use the same type of seal that came out. Do not skimp on trailer bearings, grease or seals or you could find yourself trapped at the side of the road with a broken down trailer. Trailer bearings are pretty cheap so don’t try to save a few pennies here- it could cost you in the long run.

      Thanks for your quick reply. I am haing difficulty finding the same grease seal as I am removing. The old one is O.D. 1.983 I.D. 1.274 and 0.437 high. I have found a similar seal (Rockwell American (12192) which is also doubled lipped and has the same O.D. but I.D. of 1.25 (which is a little tighter) but the height is only 0.25. My thinking was this seal may have to be tapped into the hub slightly further to keep the bearing in the race but a friend said "no, keep it flush in the hub.

    • @boatus
      @boatus  4 роки тому

      @@Mr3Charlie If you really cannot find the same seal as the old one then the one that you refer to may work for a time, but as the seal will be tighter on the shaft I would not be surprised if the seal wears a groove on the axle. This will cause the eventual failure of the seal allowing grease out and water in resulting in potential collapse of the hub bearings. Any seal should when seated be flush with the back of the hub.

    Good video. I would only add that you shouldn't put the hub on WITH the wheel. Also u should put grease in every cavity as possible not remove it. And grease the seal and axle before install. Bend the cotter pin COUNTER clockwise and use a piece of wood with the hammer. Then spin in and use a grease gun to fill cavities. Do it a few times until the bearing buddy no longer goes in much after spinning.

    blosom - some, but not all, trailer hubs use different sizes for the inner and outer bearings. It's important to lay the bearings out in an organized manner to make sure that the parts get put back in the right way.

    Can you do this without a race driver?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Peter. Thanks for the question. Yes, you can. Use a large punch and tap around the inside of the bearing to either remove the bearing race or reinsert it. I’ve found about a 12-inch length of 1-inch diameter pipe works, too.

    when you buy your new kit is there a difference between the inner and outer bearing? you kept being very specific that this is the inner bearing and this is the outer. if there is a difference how can you tell?

    Does the hub need a Bearing Buddy or can you put the plastic cap straight over the bearing and hub?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  7 років тому

      Bearing Buddies are optional. It is perfectly acceptable to use the metal or plastic hub covers to retain the grease. This is a case where one uses one or the other, not both. Many trailer owners like Bearing Buddies for the ease with which the grease can be added to the hub. Additionally, because the grease is under a slight measure of positive pressure inside the hub, water and dirt are less likely to find their way into the bearings causing premature wear. Thanks for watching!

      Speaking of b
      Bearing Buddy, why not fill the Bearing Buddy at the end of the procedure to make sure you have that desired grease "pressure"?
