The word Alicorn for the most part traditionally was the physical material a unicorn's horn was said to be made of, it's a really old word. It WAS also used to refer to winged unicorns prior to MLP but only VERY rarely. It wasn't even remotely the common usage. But in the early FiM fandom, people were desperate to find a name for "winged unicorn" that sounded catchier and more fitting. Someone found out the term "Alicorn" was TECHNICALLY used for winged unicorns, vaguely, very uncommonly, and they decided that that was enough justification to popularize the term. It probably helped that the word Alicorn vaguely sounds like All-icorn, as Alicorns in the show are canonically all 3 Pony types combined.
I mean there’s nothing wrong with that being the reason the word became more widely used. If it was already used that way, it doesn’t matter if it was uncommon, that completely justifies the popularization. All words and language evolve constantly, and this is just a good example of that.
As per Wikipedia "In some literature and media, it has been referred to as an alicorn, a word derived from the Italian word alicorno (itself from Latin wing 'āla' and horn 'cornū'), or as a pegacorn, a portmanteau of pegasus and unicorn." Makes enought sense to me as a speaker of a latin based language, "alado" means winged and "corno" means horn, so technically it would mean winged unicorn (or winged horn lol)
I feel like the day shining armor passes would be the day (after of course a week or so of mourning) Flurry Heart ascends to the throne. Cadence is the princess of love after all, and how could you continue being that after your own love dies after you've made a family and an entire kingdom (basically) together?
@@selectidiot Shining rode off on a heroic adventure and never came back. Cadence gets moody, Flurry is kept trapped indoors, never to gain a cutie mark for the past.... I forget how many hundred years now...
I think as an alicorns power gets stronger, the wispy mane is a representation of like the magic flowing through them. You can see this when Twilight takes Celestia, Luna, and Cadence's magic to hide it from Tirek when she comes overflowing with power her mane gets all wavy. I believe there's other instances where when the mane 6 use the power of friendship to defeat King Sombra. Also, when Twilight gets older her mane gets flowy then too.
I think that when you pump too much magical energy into a single horse body, the material structure begins to disintegrate. You see this with Nightmare Moon, who can shift between her normal form and a cloud of gas at will; as well as with Sombra, who gets stuck in that liminal state when his body was destroyed, and needs a terrific influx of power just to remain coherent.
I believe the "Alicorn" name was from a tweet by Lauren Faust in the season 1 or 2 era. I remember the fandom term being in use before season 3, at which point we were all like "Ohhh there it is!" when they namedropped them.
Yup when they first said alicorns in the show i had such a big smile on my face since the fandom was the only place i have ever heard the term being used. Its felt lile the show stuff did have this conection to the fandom and wanted it to be canon. Ah good times
Yeah. Though "Alicorn" was already a word before, it was wasn't very mainstream to think about until FiM and Twilight's ascension blew up. The things were **mainly** called winged-unicorn or horned-pegasus, or just.. kinda nothing, for decades lol.

There is actually a webcomic called I Am Not An Alicorn where the creator expands on the idea of ponies being born with wings and a horn as a defect. It goes into how it's more like taking a portion of pegasus and unicorns instead of being all three. It's a super fun read,
I agree, i never understood why she didn't have physical wings and horns, and like you said, it would have been interesting to see her friends teach her to fly and use magic
We did get that plot in Mission Imponable! ua-cam.com/video/0dBUTosi-FI/v-deo.html Zipp, Hitch, and Izzy teach Sunny flight, flora magic, and telekinesis - and by the end of the episode, she outdoes them at all three.
But none of her friends had magic or flew until the same time sunny got her ghost features.. just saying, what could Izzy really know about magic or any of pegasi know about flying? Except for maybe zipp’s theoretical flight knowledge.. the eunichorns may have had some oral tradition passed down and spell books around but practical knowledge of magic flight should have been pretty much lost to time.
@@moonwolf9954 I feel like this SERIOUSLY could of worked and been such a good idea if they did it like this: Since both the Pegasi and Unicorns lost their magic and flight, so have Alicorns. Which is why Sunny's horn and wings aren't physical. Through multiple episodes and working along with her friends, she and them must find a way to bring both magic and flying back to each race. And only then does her wings and horns become physical. Maybe this could accumulate in her creating a school just like Twilights where earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns can connect and learn about each other and their cultures. But of course a fan has better ideas than the writers or the corp that just wants money (sadly)
I don't consider G5 to be canon at all, not even in the SLIGHTEST because it just completely screws up everything we thought we knew about the entirety of MLP, not just the alicorns, and I hate it. The movie was fun, but I don't consider G5 to be part of the G4 universe, if it is canon, it is canon to it's own universe and isn't related to G4 at all. This is my own opinion
Same. I actually quite like some of the characters and concepts of G5, but I really wish it was it's own thing... I know it's because they probably wanted to capitalize on all the cool lore and franchise goodwill G4 made them, but it should've just been separate. They didn't have to do G4 like that.
It was written early on in a novel Lauren Fuast helped make.. then was made non canon somehow.. then g5 tried to use it so it technally became canon again for the first time.
Princess Cadence is the Royal Sisters’ niece btw. She does have a story as to how she became an alicorn in a book, and it’ll be a comic very soon! Like you said, she used to be a Pegasus.
Technically ☝️🤓 Alicorns are winged unicorns who possess the combined power of earth ponies, pegasus and unicorns and possess incredible levels of power. Rarity was just a normal unicorn with butterfly wings.
I think the angular features, height and floating mane are caused by high levels of magic because we've seen a unicorn with all those features who is known for being skilled with magic.
5:28 Unicorn nerd here; "alicorn" used to refer to the horn of a unicorn, it was often called for in ancient potions. A narwhal horn was often used instead 🦄
For me the Secret of the Alicorns deserves to be treated better, because many characters and Villains wanted to obtain this own power, I wonder why he was so keen to take it
Alicorn is the substance unicorn horns are supposedly made from. As for a term for a winged unicorn, it is an ooold term. I remember it being a thing among horse furries on Furcadia back in, like, 2004. It seems to have been a fantasy horse name for a long while.
2:48 It's more likely that it would be Chrysalis and after living much longer than her partner in poison she is starvend for love to the point that she needed to take it from others :3
Cadance was created by Hasbro's corporate mandate. They've been trying to sell a pink Alicorn princess since day 1. That's why Celestia has SO MANY toys of her being pink until Cadance was introduced, and then Cadance had a ton of toys made out of her too I suggest you make Princess Cadance's video before January 2025th because they'll release a Cadance backstory comic then, and it'd be a good idea to make another video either building on it or showing how the comic changes your previous preconceptions
Alicorns are powerful. It is shown in season 4 finale that they hold so much magic inside their bodies it literally oozes into their appearance by making their hair shine and wave, as if it’s made of tangible magic. The stylistic choice of only making Twilight’s hair wave later on implies that alicorns only become more powerful as their values solidify in time. Powerful deeds and achievements can craft a alicorn, because alicorns are living _symbols_ . I do believe Shining Armor has alicorn-like qualities, having only had female alicorns on screen doesn’t mean anything really, Princess Big Mac could unironically be a thing if he did something huge like feeding a whole country during a famine, thus becoming ‘Princess of the Harvest’ . had Shining Armor he had a chance to show his courage and save Equestria as a general, he would’ve gotten his wings too, but being a secondary characters means having little screen time 🤷♀️. So what happens when Love personified marries Bravery personified? You get a baby alicorn. I think the merging of powerful forces explains why Flurry Heart was born an alicorn instead of a regular unicorn or pegasus, she doesn’t need to prove herself and earn a title, being born was her trial as her parents went to through great hardships during their marriage yet persevered enough to stay together till having her. She is the manifestation of two summed symbols which create a new, distinct one, we just never saw her expressing it. My theory is she would’ve become the Princess of Family.
Oh, oh this is BEAUTIFUL. Admittedly, I don't watch the curent gens of MLP, I'm only really familiar with gens 2 and 3, but I love this as an explanation.
Weirdly enough, Skyros kind of reminds me of the Astral Plane in Granblue fantasy... Long story short, GBF has two dimensions, the Astral Plane and the Sky Plane (for easiest explanation), and the Astrals from there discover the other dimension and decide to conquer it because the locals of that other world are 'inferior' to them (when in reality they aren't). There's a bunch of wars and stuff where the Skyfolk are able to keep the Astrals out of their dimension for the most part (though the Crimson Horizon, which is basically the border between their worlds, still has a lot of Astrals & their diaspora who live there). That is to say, Alicorns *might* be colonizers. I learn new things every day.
Remember that Zipp & Misty found a book about Alicorns with the main cover looking like the Anon Filly Alicorn. 😅 I wished we had a look what was written for it. Also, if you go back to G1.5 in the Tales show in the episode “Up, Up, and Away” there for the first time an “Alicorn” (who is a Alien) saves both Patch & Bun Bun from falling into the ocean. Dazzle Glow was her name. I’ve seen others mention that the 2nd G1 film that takes place right after the very first episode of G1 the small princess who rules the castle is a Alicorn as well or at least at the time called “Princess Pony” as you mention it. Haven’t checked but won’t be surprise if that was the case. MLP sure has interesting history about Alicorn since day one. Even the old fandom (original fans before G4), had drawings of “Alicorns” also there is a old fan fanfic of MLP Tales (Story Tales) that was written long before G4 and G3 that stars a “Alicorn” but was called “Winged Unicorn” so Alicorn name didn’t happened till G4 came. There’s a lot of hidden history 😅
i just had like some sort of realisation, what if flurry heart's purpose was like protecting the crystal heart and she already kinda served her purpose which is why she's a natural alicorn?? i don't know man this was just a thought i had midway thru the video
Hey there, great video! Always look forward to your stuff. A few notes and questions, if that's alright. 1. Alicorn was originally a term used to describe a unicorn's horn. A series of fantasy novels from the 80s used the term to refer to winged unicorns and it started to spread from there. A few 80s and 90s MLP fans referred to them as alicorns, but I believe "winged unicorn" or "pegacorn" were much more common until g4 when "alicorn" became more common among bronies and eventually was made official. 2. "Reine" is French for "queen", so it's just saying she's the Alicorn Queen. It's pronounced closer to "ren" rather than "reen" 3. I can't find the source now but I heard somewhere that the original script from Flurry Heart's birth was missing "in Equestria" from the dialogue. Celestia and Luna were surprised to hear of an alicorn being naturally born at all. I think the theory behind the change was because of The Journal of the Two Sisters, the 2014 book that mentions Celestia and Luna being raised by other alicorns, implying the existence of a population of natural alicorns. Fans at the time were super interested in seeing these other alicorns, so the writers might have thrown in the "in Equestria" bit to keep it open-ended about Celestia and Luna's origins and the existence of other alicorns. This was probably the inspiration for Skyros, if I had to guess. 4. Was the bit about Skyros having to make mortal forms for ponies they send down and all that stuff about Luna befriending ponies first mentioned somewhere, or just a headcanon? That got way longer than I meant it to, apologies!
headcanon, i think I might expand the animated segment into a longer video like "So... What the heck is Skyros?" which goes deeper in detail. I should've probably been clearer, but that animated segment was me desperately trying to make Skyros and Alicorn Ascension both make sense.
Regarding Flurryhaert theory I remember there was a theory that the reason Celestia and Luna were surprised is because Princess Cadence is (as you said) a manufactured alicorn, and that they didn't expect that she could give birth to a biologic alicorn.
Interesting video! I will never accept that Luna and Celestia were regular ponies though. It was literally a continuity error. The show's writers confirmed that they were born alicorns two years before Flurry Heart came around, they just forgot or tried pretending they didn't confirm it lol. Also I never noticed the term "alicorn" didn't show up til season 3?? That was wild to hear. I was born in 1997 so what I called what we now refer to as "alicorns" I called "Unicorn Pegaus Horses" LMAO~!!! I think "Winged Unicorn" was hella better than that lol
2:01 ik this isnt the main focus of the vid, but its my headcanon (semi-canon?) that magical power is stored in the hair of its wielder. in twilights kingdom when celestia, luna, and cadance transfer their magic to twilight, celestia and luna's manes do not have that magical wave to them anymore, but twilight's does (although it isnt permanent :L ) and its why, when luna returns from the moon and becomes reformed, her mane doesnt flow because she hasnt regained her full power yet (plus she just got her ass kicked by the elements)
since you mentioned about making a video about Cadance: you should save that for 2025 cause theres gonna be comic thats releasing at that year, which its a possible retelling or a adaptation based on the chapter novels where it revealed on what Cadance originally was in her past before she became a alicorn
Originally, Celestia and Luna were meant to be the only two Alicorns, with Twilight Sparkle becoming a princess at the end of the show, as Lauren Faust had planned. However, Hasbro decided to change that since Alicorns were considered princesses, and adding more Alicorns meant more toys to sell. This is how Cadance was introduced, particularly with her and Shining Armor's wedding, which worked well since many fans/targeted audience (which are little girls) bought the wedding sets and Princess Cadance toys (myself included). This also explains why Flurry Heart was created - to sell even more toys. Hasbro made several changes to the story in the name of toy sales, including the decision to make Celestia a princess instead of a queen (yes, Celestia was suppose to be a QUEEN not a princess). Hasbro explained that "little girls are more interested in princesses than queens," which is why all the rulers in the MLP universe are princesses. In the end, Hasbro kept milking the Alicorn concept, which led to a bit of a mess and left things not making much sense.
I called them "Pegacorn" as a kid, think I got that from neopets. The word "alicorn" was originally the material unicorn horns were made of. Think it was Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth that was said to have a unicorn horns made of alicorn that she kept for good luck.
ive said it before in another creators video but i feel like the team behind g5 tried to combine the story/world-built elements of g1-3 and g4 and really they shouldve picked one or the other* because now we have the alicorn mess which was ALREADY a mess bc of flurryheart *OR; alternatively; hasbro shouldve waited a lil longer before launching g5 so that the kinks couldve been worked out
Hum… a well put video, except that there were some errors and focused more on head canon. 😅 If there are going to be (heavy) head canon lores stated, might want to put that in the next video 🙏 Other than that, it’s a good presentation video
Coming back to the fandom after a few years, no f-ing way Sawtooth "apparently a pedophile now" Waves was right and there actually was an alicorn god realm where they were born and they came down specifically to clean up Discords discordness AND HE CAN'T EVEN BRAG ABOUT IT BECAUSE HIS CHANNEL IS GONE- naw man I'm going back to bed aint no way this actually happened
To me, I feel like Flurry Heart’s birth isn’t actually that miraculous. Maybe ponies can be born alicorns if they have an alicorn parent, just no Ali corn has ever had a child before
I much prefer the idea that alicorns are created when a new magic is created. Celestia and Luna raised the sun and moon by themselves, a feat otherwise impossible. Cadence can influence the romantic love of others. Twilight finished a spell that created the magic of friendship in a tangible way. And Flurry Heart, when born, introduced equestria to the magic of familial love. That’s my head cannon, anyway.
I wish MLP distinguished between Alicorns (Celestia and Luna) and Pegacorns/Winged Unicorns (Cadence and Twilight). This would be better, it would allow you to keep the mystique and very high reputation of Alicorns, while being allowed to have fun with a lesser version of the same thing. In my head I image it like.... Pegacorns >normal manes >long lived (maybe 200 or 300 years...?) but not immortal >not gods. they are normal people, albeit very impressive and extremely high status ones. >made through great deeds, not born >they are half Unicorn, half Pegasus (Earth Ponies can ascend, but they become no longer biologically Earth Pony. They lose their Earth Pony traits.) >their magic and flight are noticeably enhanced. However, they cannot go toe-to-toe with the greatest Unicorn mages or Pegasus fliers (unless they were unusually skilled in those areas to begin with) Alicorns >wavy manes made of pure magic >immortal >possibly NOT literally divine/gods, but they are perhaps the closest thing you can get to that in the MLP universe >are they born? No one knows! >Earth Pony, Pegasus and Unicorn combined >an Alicorn is stronger than strongest Earth Pony, swifter than the swiftest Pegasus, and more magically potent than the greatest Unicorn mages. They are on another level entirely.
@Angela.Perkins tbh I personally feel that ever having made her an alicorn in the show was a big mistake. I guess she would be a pegacorn but I acknowledge my headcanon doesn't actually fitth show at all. I'm just saying what I wish it was like. And I would have never had an alicorn baby like that, it makes them feel a lot less special, idk
they are the same thing. the wavy mane is likely the result of power. note early paintings we see Celestia with a pink mane. and luna has a non power mane. so Cadance and Twilight will get the wavy mane which is shown later at the end of the shpw when Twilight has gone celestia size and wavy mane
I think the skyros alicorns aren’t necessarily all like opaline as is described in this video, rather opaline is a sort of abnormality within them. My theory about them is they’re sort of like guardians of the world, but don’t show themselves for whatever reason. Opaline’s presence within G5 era Equestria is interesting. Perhaps her views on alicorn supremacy did not go over well with the other alicorns, and she was cast down and banished from skyros. Overall, the presence of alicorns and skyros in the g4-g5 canon remains a mystery and unfortunately will likely stay that way due to Hasbro’s premature cancellation of G5 unless it is explained through comics or something.
just a reminder, after the new gen movie was released there was a QNA at some convention and they stated how new gen wasnt supposed to have any connections to old gen and how the only correlation was the dolls and fairy tales
I don't get why people keep including Sunny as an alicorn. She merely got power of all 3 pony races from crystals and does NOT have real horn or wings. Instead she have magicaly manifested copies. It's as if you included Depry because she wore Twi's costume in one episode :P
I hate how G5 reformed the Alicorn lore tbh. The mystery of how we have been debating Alicorn origins make it far more intrigueing, and keep it very mystical and other worldly. I just think explaining something that fans already had a general agreement on completely ruins the idea of "these are mystical beings, you dont actually know where they are from, just that they're all-powerful" smh G5
very quick google search: The word alicorn comes from the Italian word alicorno, which is derived from the Latin words āla (wing) and cornū (horn). The earliest known use of the word alicorn in English was in 1678.
i see the word alicorn as a combination of the word "ali" (its probs from latin, but ik in italian it means wings) and "orn" from "horn" (idk about c tho)
This might be complete bs but what if Unicorns who become alicorns get flowy manes Pegasi who become alicorns get colored wings Earth ponies who become alicorns get transparent horn and wings
This is why I hate Gen 5. Wanna reboot the franchise? Fine. I have no problem with that... But then going and CHANGING stuff from the previous generation AND having it intentionally supposed to be in the same canon? That's just stupid.
Sorry, I didn't like this video. I think you are putting to much head-cannon into the explanation, and not as "objective" and "Bias free" as you actually intended. 1) Skyros, might be a physical place, just not one that could be reached by common mean. Yes, it could be another dimension, or another planet entirely. That doesn't mean it's "Heaven". 2) We know Opaline, thinks the Alicorns, are better than the rest of the Ponies, and deserve everything from them. However, we can't assume ALL the alicorns thought like that. 3) The word Alicorn comes from Italian word, and has etymology on Latin than consist of wing āla and horn cornū. 4) Opaline was "present" when Luna became Nightmare Moon, she actually admired her. Until she became redeemed. I think this is the reason why she is so "Villanous". In any case, I thank you for the effort and dedication into putting this video up.

That is up to you to analyze and take in consideration. In my eyes, you have the potential to be an amazing content creator. Open your mind mind and listen when it's necessary.
I love your videos but come on man! Alicorns were a thing before mlp was even invented! Like y’all didn’t invent an horse with a horn and wings. It was already a thing. 😅
That’s not what I was asking lol. I was asking whether or not bronies started calling them Alicorns before the show, not that the show invented the word.
G4 dropped the ball on the lore so hard in favor of mindless toy sales. Alicorns weren't even a thing before G4; the cash grab was so obvious. Personally, I think G5's alicorn lore was much more smartly handled. I will say, I always figured that Celestia and Luna were natural-born alicorns from outside of Equestria. I saw them as the Maiar of Tolkien's world, sent from some immortal land to guide and protect the mortals.
I mean quite a few aspects of the show people actually like only exist cause they needed to make a 22 minute commercial like canterlot wedding. Like its pretty obvious that Twi was never meant to have a brother at first and Cadence was initially never meant to be a thing same with Chrissy but they had to market that damn wedding episode and toy and it worked lol. And now people dig those characters. I mean g4 takes a lot from previous gens (tirek, smooze, etc) but stuff like male ponies and a lot of the unique aspects of g4 only exist cause of g4 and not those previous gens
@ I never understood the brother thing. We still hadn’t seen most of the characters’ parents yet, let alone siblings. That doesn’t mean they were all implied to be orphans and only children. It just means that their families… hadn’t come up yet. It’s not like twilight was running around saying “I have no siblings!” Although, returning the topic to alicorns, Cadence is a pretty good example of how *not* to integrate a toy into the show. The writers refused to touch her backstory with a 40-foot pole, or even give her much of a personality. It’s like they don’t even want her to be there.
There was an alicorn in G1 named Dazzleglow that lead a small group called the show'n'glows, which were also created solely as a toyline. Albeit she was a minor character but she was still there and still had merch and is the first alicorn of the franchise. Either way, it contributes to the mystery of what alicorns are in the MLP world as she was either implied or confirmed (it's been like 15 years since I've seen old MLP so idr which) to be an alien or at least some otherworldly being, which is probably what Lauren originally wanted to go for considering she only intended for Celestia and Luna to be alicorns. It's also interesting to note that Lauren once said in I believe and DeviantArt comment/reply that she intended for Celestia to just have a certain mysterious knowledge that others didn't/couldn't have and that she automatically knew that Twilight was "The One" to take over because of it. But I do think the comment of them solely being a cashgrab is kind of funny because that's all the MLP franchise has EVER been. The toys came first and the show was made to help promote and sell them to little girls easier by making them more widespread. The shows were made to sell the toys, not the other way around. At the very least I do agree that there's some lore in G4 was left unfinished in an otherwise world-built universe and that makes it frustrating
@@AbsoluteCactus It should be noted that Dazzleglow was an alicorn in the show but a unicorn in the toys, so it wasn't really about toy sales. They just needed ponies who could fly, so they stuck wings on them. And Dazzleglow wasn't their leader; a pegasus (earth pony in the toys) named Brightglow was. As for their alien or otherworldly status, that is implied but not stated. Celestia's ability to receive premonitions was openly stated once, I believe in connection with Discord's return (or one of the other early premiers/finales). I would have liked to see it referenced more, as it would add quite a lot of context to her selection of Twilight. As things stand, one can't help but wonder what Celestia saw in a self-absorbed unicorn who despised friendship and had her muzzle stuffed in books 24/7. Although, yes, it is certainly true that everything about MLP is inherently a cash grab. But some of those elements contribute to the story better than others.
@@PeacePetal Ah. Again, it's been a reeeaally long time since I've consumed G1. Odd though bc I vividly remember there being an alicorn toy of hers but maybe it was a fake. Unsure. Also did not remember Brightglow whatsoever so thank you for that correction! And yeah hard agree on that one. But I suppose it falls under Celestia just somehow "knew" she was destined to be the next ruler of Equestria so her being a complete asshat was just an "oh she'll get over that soon" moment. Who knows lol Also hard agree, which is why I agree that it's a shame some things didn't get as fleshed out because there's so much potential for explanation on so many things in the show 😔
why can't people just accept alicorns can be born or made. Faust herself never hinted at Celestia and Luna not ever being alicorns and we know Faust planned for Twilight to take over from Celestia. Cadance and flurry were never in her plans. but yeah powerscaling is nuts which is why i hatwe Starlight. the only way Starlight should be Twilight in a fight is know spell Twilight does not. in raw power Twilight should beat her.
Alicorns may be a mess but sunny's on/off wings and horns made of magical energy is just a load of utter BS as Alicorns are a type of pony.😒😒😡😡 Also I don't think that earth ponies or pegasi can become Alicorns, as pegasi would not have special talents geared towards magic and earth ponies neither have special talents towards magic or flight, so would never be able to wield magic or fly as the magic in earth ponies is so different and would be geared towards their special talent resembled by their cutie mark and as such would be unable to use true magic or fly even if transformed the correct way. sunny's special talents would be towards astrology, given that she is an earth pony and her cutie mark is stars. It is so painfully obvious that they were trying too hard to make earth ponies seem special when they already were and would not only never be capable of being an Alicorn but just really don't need it they are amazing as they are tbh. 🤩🤩
The word “alicorn” originally meant the material a unicornʼs horn is made of. Then Iʼm not sure how, but heard it started with the Piers Anthony Xanth series, it came to be used for winged unicorns. And then Hasbro took it from there.
As per Wikipedia
"In some literature and media, it has been referred to as an alicorn, a word derived from the Italian word alicorno (itself from Latin wing 'āla' and horn 'cornū'), or as a pegacorn, a portmanteau of pegasus and unicorn."
Makes enought sense to me as a speaker of a latin based language, "alado" means winged and "corno" means horn, so technically it would mean winged unicorn (or winged horn lol)
FYI Starswirl teaching Celestia and Luna isn't comic canon, it's show canon (Shadow Play)
It's both, technically.

"Not immortal as you mean it. My race can die through illness or injury." -- Lorien, Babylon5

@@Edward256 BABYLON 5 MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Immortal creatures never age therefore they live forever, but they can still be killed.
The word Alicorn existed long before that; it comes from the Latin "āla (wing) and cornū (horn)".
Don't forget that Chrysalis was originally titled as a "Pegacorn" in an old script!!

There is actually a webcomic called I Am Not An Alicorn where the creator expands on the idea of ponies being born with wings and a horn as a defect. It goes into how it's more like taking a portion of pegasus and unicorns instead of being all three. It's a super fun read,
Only if Princess Amore was alicorn in comics...

Sombra’s a guy, therefore he’s a colt (or foal, for a gender-neutral term)
@nightflame389 oh my bad
I wish Sunny had psychical wings and horn it would be such an interesting plot to have her friends teach her how to fly and use magic
I agree, i never understood why she didn't have physical wings and horns, and like you said, it would have been interesting to see her friends teach her to fly and use magic
We did get that plot in Mission Imponable! ua-cam.com/video/0dBUTosi-FI/v-deo.html
Zipp, Hitch, and Izzy teach Sunny flight, flora magic, and telekinesis - and by the end of the episode, she outdoes them at all three.
@jseden then they could learn together bonding moment
@@moonwolf9954 I feel like this SERIOUSLY could of worked and been such a good idea if they did it like this:
Since both the Pegasi and Unicorns lost their magic and flight, so have Alicorns.

Totally agree, it pains me to see all of the lore and worldbuilding of g4 completely wrecked just because of some new badly thought out show
Same. I actually quite like some of the characters and concepts of G5, but I really wish it was it's own thing...
I know it's because they probably wanted to capitalize on all the cool lore and franchise goodwill G4 made them, but it should've just been separate. They didn't have to do G4 like that.
Agreed
So there was an entire skyros lore..... AND WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE IT??!!

Also rarity was an alicorn in the Rainboom episode
also in Pinkies imagination when she envisioned her as an angel on her shoulder :3
Technically ☝️🤓 Alicorns are winged unicorns who possess the combined power of earth ponies, pegasus and unicorns and possess incredible levels of power. Rarity was just a normal unicorn with butterfly wings.
@@dusksunsetio6042 same as Sunny, she got magical "prostetics" so yeah, they both aren't actual alicorns
3:28 she’s the princess of friendship and represents the element of magic
I mean Friendship IS Magic
For me the Secret of the Alicorns deserves to be treated better, because many characters and Villains wanted to obtain this own power, I wonder why he was so keen to take it
Alicorn is the substance unicorn horns are supposedly made from. As for a term for a winged unicorn, it is an ooold term. I remember it being a thing among horse furries on Furcadia back in, like, 2004. It seems to have been a fantasy horse name for a long while.
The word Alicorn existed long before that; it comes from the Latin "āla (wing) and cornū (horn)".
2:48 It's more likely that it would be Chrysalis and after living much longer than her partner in poison she is starvend for love to the point that she needed to take it from others :3
I completely agree that is chrysalis and not cadance
Cadance was created by Hasbro's corporate mandate. They've been trying to sell a pink Alicorn princess since day 1. That's why Celestia has SO MANY toys of her being pink until Cadance was introduced, and then Cadance had a ton of toys made out of her too
I suggest you make Princess Cadance's video before January 2025th because they'll release a Cadance backstory comic then, and it'd be a good idea to make another video either building on it or showing how the comic changes your previous preconceptions
i'm not even kidding, wait about 9 hours and 30 minutes and check my channel
12:12 NGL I think this is the best and most interesting theory/head canon I have ever heard.
It's pronounced closer to "ren" rather than "reen"
Regarding Flurryhaert theory
I remember there was a theory that the reason Celestia and Luna were surprised is because Princess Cadence is (as you said) a manufactured alicorn, and that they didn't expect that she could give birth to a biologic alicorn.
I'm pretty sure either G1 or G2 is when the first alicorn princesses were introduced. It was definitely before G3 because I have one of the toys.
Sunny's alicorn magic works more like the Equestria Girls transformation magic.
Ykw i dont need sleep i would rather watch this
why did g5 just ruin all the lore from g4 😭😭 my headcanon is that it's set in an alternate universe :c
This would be a pretty dope fan fiction
Gunga Ginga I smell a Stinga
I’m pretty sure we see nightmare moon first not Celestia, surprising thing to mistake
can we all just collectively agree g5 is bull
I can, i tried giving it the benefit of the doubt, even enjoyed some of it, but in the bigger picture its quite rough.
I didn’t really like the movie. Some of the characters are cool but I didn’t really like some aspects like the phones. Like how do the hold phones??
How would you rank the generations?
I think the first time allicorn was said in the show was that episode with the Allicorn amulet
since you mentioned about making a video about Cadance: you should save that for 2025 cause theres gonna be comic thats releasing at that year, which its a possible retelling or a adaptation based on the chapter novels where it revealed on what Cadance originally was in her past before she became a alicorn
Thats princess golden dreams
I called them "Pegacorn" as a kid, think I got that from neopets. The word "alicorn" was originally the material unicorn horns were made of. Think it was Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth that was said to have a unicorn horns made of alicorn that she kept for good luck.
ive said it before in another creators video but i feel like the team behind g5 tried to combine the story/world-built elements of g1-3 and g4 and really they shouldve picked one or the other* because now we have the alicorn mess which was ALREADY a mess bc of flurryheart
*OR; alternatively; hasbro shouldve waited a lil longer before launching g5 so that the kinks couldve been worked out
I don't even watch or know anything about MLP but your videos are so interesting I watch them anyways 🤷
Hum… a well put video, except that there were some errors and focused more on head canon. 😅
If there are going to be (heavy) head canon lores stated, might want to put that in the next video 🙏
Other than that, it’s a good presentation video
The only reason why their mane moves like that is possibly because of their over flowing magic they have. But it could be a style.
Coming back to the fandom after a few years, no f-ing way Sawtooth "apparently a pedophile now" Waves was right and there actually was an alicorn god realm where they were born and they came down specifically to clean up Discords discordness AND HE CAN'T EVEN BRAG ABOUT IT BECAUSE HIS CHANNEL IS GONE-
naw man I'm going back to bed aint no way this actually happened
To me, I feel like Flurry Heart’s birth isn’t actually that miraculous. Maybe ponies can be born alicorns if they have an alicorn parent, just no Ali corn has ever had a child before
So Luna and Tia are basically Gandalf got it!
Pegacorns
>normal manes
>long lived (maybe 200 or 300 years...?) but not immortal
>not gods. they are normal people, albeit very impressive and extremely high status ones.
>made through great deeds, not born
>they are half Unicorn, half Pegasus (Earth Ponies can ascend, but they become no longer biologically Earth Pony. They lose their Earth Pony traits.)
>their magic and flight are noticeably enhanced. However, they cannot go toe-to-toe with the greatest Unicorn mages or Pegasus fliers (unless they were unusually skilled in those areas to begin with)
Alicorns
>wavy manes made of pure magic
>immortal
>possibly NOT literally divine/gods, but they are perhaps the closest thing you can get to that in the MLP universe
>are they born? No one knows!
>Earth Pony, Pegasus and Unicorn combined
>an Alicorn is stronger than strongest Earth Pony, swifter than the swiftest Pegasus, and more magically potent than the greatest Unicorn mages. They are on another level entirely.

Love the high rose headcanon. First time I see g5 influencing G4 in a positive way
I think the skyros alicorns aren’t necessarily all like opaline as is described in this video, rather opaline is a sort of abnormality within them.

The lore of this cartoon about rainbow ponies made for little girls is surprisingly confusing.

you should talk about the mlp pony that came out like 3 weeks ago
Duuude u should definitely make another video about this, especially about skyros or however tf it's spelled lol
The earliest known use of the word alicorn in English was in 1678.
when tirek comes around doesn't he mention only knowing about the 3 alicorns, and not about twilight? im pretty sure there are still only the few
i see the word alicorn as a combination of the word "ali" (its probs from latin, but ik in italian it means wings) and "orn" from "horn" (idk about c tho)
I love this :3
G5 writers didn't study the source material, did they?
Ali-wing
Corn-horn
This might be complete bs but what if
Unicorns who become alicorns get flowy manes
Pegasi who become alicorns get colored wings
Earth ponies who become alicorns get transparent horn and wings
Badasss, I juet got on UA-cam and u posted
This is why I hate Gen 5. Wanna reboot the franchise? Fine. I have no problem with that... But then going and CHANGING stuff from the previous generation AND having it intentionally supposed to be in the same canon? That's just stupid.
I'm pretty certain that Gen 5 is genuinely just a completely unreliable source here comes to any sort of Gen 4 lore..

It’s not like twilight was running around saying “I have no siblings!”
Although, returning the topic to alicorns, Cadence is a pretty good example of how *not* to integrate a toy into the show.
Who knows lol
Also hard agree, which is why I agree that it's a shame some things didn't get as fleshed out because there's so much potential for explanation on so many things in the show 😔

Hai
why can't people just accept alicorns can be born or made. Faust herself never hinted at Celestia and Luna not ever being alicorns and we know Faust planned for Twilight to take over from Celestia. Cadance and flurry were never in her plans. but yeah powerscaling is nuts which is why i hatwe Starlight. the only way Starlight should be Twilight in a fight is know spell Twilight does not. in raw power Twilight should beat her.
probably cuz faust only was a part of the first few seasons, and theres other people who wrote the show too.
Alicorns may be a mess but sunny's on/off wings and horns made of magical energy is just a load of utter BS as Alicorns are a type of pony.😒😒😡😡
Also I don't think that earth ponies or pegasi can become Alicorns, as pegasi would not have special talents geared towards magic and earth ponies neither have special talents towards magic or flight, so would never be able to wield magic or fly as the magic in earth ponies is so different and would be geared towards their special talent resembled by their cutie mark and as such would be unable to use true magic or fly even if transformed the correct way.
sunny's special talents would be towards astrology, given that she is an earth pony and her cutie mark is stars.
