The Macallan 12 was my first love and was the cause of my conversion from wine studies to whisky studies so they have a special place in my heart (and liver). I also enjoyed a tour of the new distillery shortly after it opened last June. But, that being said, they seem to be going in a direction with the marketing department ("Make The Call") that causes me to cringe. I am hoping that they will me a course correction.
Jimmy Leg I guess you don’t know me... I’m a Sommelier who was into wine for 20 years and while studying for the WSET Diploma in 2016 I was studying spirits at which time I got introduced to whisky. I then changed course and have been studying whisky and traveling around the world visiting distilleries in Kentucky, California, Texas and Scotland. In fact I’ll be returning to Scotland next week.
Overpriced, in Sweden you can buy a bottle of Highland Park 18 and a bottle of Glendronach 18 for the price of one bottle Mac 18 and still have 💰 left.
3:50 personally I do find most Macallans somewhat complex, sure they are very easy to drink and I think most beginners would enjoy them too, but there are some notes that are hidden that do add complexity when you search for them.
I got a peated burbon from the S&S distillery. Found it at The Venetian casino. the description is "Centuries of enthusiasts can't be wrong. This beauty spend two years in a new oak barrel and was finished in a Glengassaugh peated barrell from Scotland. Simply amazing and not to be passed by." It's 40%, and it's ok. I've tried to find more information on the distillery, but alas, I couldn't.
When they talk about Irish whiskey they often mention the taste of shortbread cookies, which are called biscuits in the UK. They used to argue about which term to use.
Journeyman Distiller in Three Oaks Michigan we spied several casks with peat written on the head when touring their production. We inquired and they confirmed they have just started distilling a peated whiskey. So about 5-7 years out before its ready. Looking forward to it.
Sir, Which American whisky to start with collection. Top 10. Price range $40-$300 Macallan 18 is different to Glendronach 18, 21 and aberlour. Macallan 18 sherry taste little like Glendronach but not as sweet as it with less sherry only smell, a little smoky like Blue label but more sharp. Macallan 18 taste changes with each sip. It has all peat, smoke, sherry, citrus, cherry and tobacco. I don't know if it's only me or everyone noticed the same. Macallan is an all weather whiskey same as Blue Label and can be used as mixer cocktail like Blue Label (All taste buds 95% would like it) Ardbeg, Lagavulin is better when it's snowing but difficult to have in summer. Glenfiddich 12 vs 15 vs 18 are totally different from citrusy to oaky. The sweetest is Glenfiddich 18 Olorosso cash.
Genuine curiousity, what would happen if you placed the barrel in a stainless/aluminum drum with a vent pipe and tried to recondense some angels share?
The whisky i would recommend is Kavalan Solist with the white label what a whisky!! I were at a beer and whisky fair, i had a good time drank and had enjoying the moment, the last whisky i tested was the Kavalan Solist and at that point your tasting i kind of fucked by all the alcohol. But it didn't matter it was so rich in flavor and yet so smooth, this is the by far the best whisky i have tested! Later on my brother got the solist so i grabbed my glendronach parlamentet and compared them side to side and their was no competiton at all the solist outpreformed it in every category
I swear, back in the 70's I used to buy this stuff for $30-40 a bottle. I stopped when the yuppies drove the price up to about $60, and stuck with 12yo for a long time. Talking about angel's share, I wonder how much Jack Daniels loses. If you take the tour, they end it in a barrel house, so you can take it in for about 10 minutes. (If you've never been in one of those huge barrel houses, the aroma is heavenly, lol...) They used to have a barrel house at Jim Beam, but you couldn't go inside it. You could stick you head in the open door and inhale, but it's not the same as being inside one...
How about a video on comparing different finishing casks with tasting notes? For example, [blank] whisk(e)y is a great example of [blank] finish, etc. I've enjoyed pours of sherry-finished whisky like Naked Grouse and Aberlour without knowing until afterward. However, as someone who is less versed in wines, I'm reluctant to buy a bottle that is finished with something I've never heard of. An intro into different finishes would really help. Thanks for taking the time to spread whisk(e)y knowledge and totally not use it as an excuse to drink whiskey all day. Cheers!
Here is a question. I’m going to Scotland and have been trying to do research but have been coming up empty. My question is, what bottles are a must to pick up in Scotland that are not easily available outside Scotland?
i just got a few bottles of Cragganmore Distillers Edition Double Matured distilled 2005 bottled 2017. I have had a lot of whiskys but this is by far my favourite right now. Have you guys had it yet and if so where on your whisky scale would u rate it?
I’ve been waiting for the Jameson BB video since you guys first mentioned it. One of my favorite whiskeys, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Love to see that you guys remember things you haven’t gotten around to, however obscure and can’t wait to see more content to come. You guys are great
When Daniel initially said "I'm really starting to love sherry cask whiskey" I almost forgot who I was watching and had to double check. Also, Rex seems to have reached a level where nothing is impressing him anymore, like a "more and more" syndrome. Something needs to blow his socks off or needs to be so heinous, it resets his internal whiskey-clock
Mcallen is my favorite scotch. Jameson black label or stout cask strength are my hands down favorite whiskeys. I hide my mcallen bottles. Just not the sherry stuff bleh. Cept this one it's nice. I'd just drink sherry otherwise. Still mcallen is far better than the glen livet sherry stuff. Any oaky mcallen is amazing.
Was just wondering that same thing.. since it's a blend does it check the box? Personally, I'd say yes, since it offers a pretty different flavor from that a peated Scotch or a peated American single malt even. It's pretty dang good though, either way!
Hey everyone, I was in Ireland last month and learned that regular Jameson is an average of 5 years old. A little online digging and I found out Jameson Black Barrel is an average of 12 years old.
Mooch story for rex. The other day, my friend and I were gonna grab some drinks to celebrate him having a baby, and knowing he's a fan of Jack, so I got a bottle of Jack single barrel select, which I know is a loss of mooch points. Gave it to him before we went into the bar, where I proceeded to try things I havent had yet. Got a pour of tullamore dew, knob creek, and Elijah Craig, and then to my surprise, he payed the tab. Then he followed it up by saying that he won't open the Jack till we can sit down and drink it together. What level of mooch does that make me?
I like macallan, but jeez their prices... for the rare occasion that I could spend that money... octomore, Talisker 18, HP 18, Springbank 18, Red Breast 21, go win an auction for Ardbeg Dark Cove... but I am a peathead so...
I've had my fair share of sherry oak finished or completely matured in sherry whiskies, as well as much peated whiskies. I want to try some older whiskies that are not sherried or peated, what would you recommend.
How does one go about increasing their knowledge and understanding of the whiskey they drink? Unfortantely I am very new to whiskey and I quite like some of the cheaper Glenfiddich's, Laphroaig's for single malts and sometimes Monkey Shoulder, above Black black label Johnney Walker for Mixed. I also like the taste of Rare Breed Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve.
Team, can you give a suggestion? My girlfriend’s dad’s favourite whisky is Higland Park single malt 21. He’s a patriotic Scotsman, which means he’s biased towards scotches, especially single malts. If I wanted to suggest something to him, that he would like, but probably not normally have tried, what would you recommend? Open to anyone.
If you like another kind of wood smell and taste, try the Manuka wood aged Thomson from New Zealand, took me half an hour to figure that one out. Never heard of that wood before I tasted it, whisky also is a bit very old leather shoe ish.
W P it’s a young whisky and in my opinion tastes like it. The South Island peat whisky from Thomson is far better (again in my opinion!). They’re around 20 miles from my house, a rarity in West Auckland so I’m following them closely.
Macallan had stopped distributing the age-statement bottles in Canada for a while, but it seems they reversed that last year. Still can't get the 18yo in my province though - however I do see the 18 Triple Cask.
a Looooooong time ago I found KNOCKANDO scotch. a wonderfully smooth speyside with a nice vanilla finish. they stopped importing it because they couldn't get a significant market share. I would LOVE it if you guys bot a bottle, and suggested more readily available that isn't harsh or as peaty as the highlands scotch whiskey's.
I'm sipping on this right now and I gotta say it's so much more complex in my opinion than the blue lable by Johnnie Walker by far more of a true whiskey flavor that travels from the back of the tongue to the front tip it's truly a trip and a highly recommended whiskey,! Cheers!!!
Amazing marketing team sub par to just slightly above par of what is inside. For a uncomplex that doesn’t make me think there a so many cheaper options that are just as enjoyable.
Since i found your channel ive decided to try one knew whiskey any time i go to a bar. Went to my go to watering hole. They dont stock Elijah Craig 4 roses Macallan Or Glennfidich. Can this even be classified as a bar?
Thank you for your interesting videos! Huge fan of yours!!! I am fond of Macallan's selection, but you are right...it is not challenging, just super enjoyable! P.S please do some whisky master classes in Europe too so we can get to experience your whisky wizardry in real life! Best Regards from Greece !
Wigle's Kilted Rye is aged in used Laphroaig barrels. Additionally they offer a smoked bourbon but instead of peat the barley is smoked over American hardwoods.
This is true and yeah good on them for doing that. Yeah sounds like it would be made more from malted barley. If it’s the one I’m thinking of it’s got like a Smokey choc nose to it. It’s amazing. Tbh I think these guys have done a review on it as well.
It’s a shame they can’t build a angel’s share collection machine to capture the evaporated whisky and offer it as a marketing ploy! “Jameson’s- Stolen from Angels!”
The only good think with Macallan is the fact you can double your money on limited release editions. You can’t even buy some of the Macallans in Scotland because they only release for the world market. Also did you know Glen Dronach is owed my Jack Daniels before it became popular
I have a bottle of Santa Fe Colkegan Single Malt Whiskey that is mesquite smoke peated(if you will). I don't like scotch that much but I love this whisky. I like to take a flask of it to family parties and picnics and share it with my uncles and cousins, even my dad has had a sample and gave an appreciated nod to it. I'm from New Mexico so I like to try local and i liked it a lot.
Orange County Distillery (NY not CA) does a peat smoked single malt. They use their own black soil and smoke on the premises. I don't think they age it long enough but they are just getting started.
Daniel mentioned at least 4 or 5 other sherry influenced Scotches and Rex never even asked for a glass. Rex even started to say the toast and Daniel had to interrupt him to give him more whiskey... The mooch is dead! Long live the mooch!
My brother game me a drink of the 18 when I was 22. I was such a Scotch rookie I didn't care for it but I want to get a bottle now but my wallet says no.
Hi..... if I bought a bottle between 6 people.....what would be 3 ways for me to drink this in numerical order...... for example maybe start on the rocks or with no ice..... then in a mixed drink ( what kind of drink?) And then for the finish..... this way six people can enjoy the bottle and also not to get waisted but nice!.....
I don't see how the difference in how you consume affects the amount in the bottle, if you split a 750/700 ml bottle in 6, just divide the liquid by 6, then everyone gets a fair amount. Also what kind of Drink? That heavily depends on what you are drinking and what you like, you haven't specified what you are buying.
What are 3 ways I can enjoy this bottle that was just reviewed ..... in the 3 ways you can include straight, on the rocks and or all in mix drinks........ just looking to drink 3 drinks in one night but all different...... all I know to mix ginger ale soda and lime juice😂
@@esdificil3764 This bottle would be way too expensive to put in a mixed drink, drink it straight, or with ice. But if you usually drink scotch with ginger ale or soda, you're probably not that into whisky, and this would be a terrible purchase, since unless you're an experienced scotch drinker, and I am talking straight scotch, you won't really be able to taste the difference in a 30$ scotch and a 250$ scotch. This specific whisky is not easy to get a hold of, and if you do, it will cost you about 500-600 USD.
Good. That's what I wanted to hear..... yes I dont drink a lot. I just wanted to drink expensive bottles by splitting the cost with somebody..... hut I dont really enjoy drinking straight....... so I might stick to the 60 dollar bottles until I am ready ..... thanks....
@@esdificil3764 Yeah, that's a good idea, when I first started drinking whisky all I tasted was the alcohol, it took about 4 months for me to really enjoy straight whisky.
The greatest trick the mooch ever pulled was to convince the rest of the tribe that he never existed.

Macallan had stopped distributing the age-statement bottles in Canada for a while, but it seems they reversed that last year. Still can't get the 18yo in my province though - however I do see the 18 Triple Cask.
Wait I recognize you guys.... hmm can't recall where I met you....
Life has briefly pulled me away from this channel. I'm glad, albeit disturbed that the episode featuring "Rex's Wood" is the first I happened upon.
Chattanooga had a peated TN Whiskey, but they were sold out when I visited there, earlier this year
Their must be alot of drunk angels around the Macallan distillery
a Looooooong time ago I found KNOCKANDO scotch. a wonderfully smooth speyside with a nice vanilla finish. they stopped importing it because they couldn't get a significant market share.
I would LOVE it if you guys bot a bottle, and suggested more readily available that isn't harsh or as peaty as the highlands scotch whiskey's.
Loved the triple cask 12 years old , but all others Macallans are out of my budget.
Grand Travers Distillery in Travers City Michigan does a Peated Bourbon, I think.
FYI their Rye is actually very good.
I'm sipping on this right now and I gotta say it's so much more complex in my opinion than the blue lable by Johnnie Walker by far more of a true whiskey flavor that travels from the back of the tongue to the front tip it's truly a trip and a highly recommended whiskey,! Cheers!!!
“A hint of struck match” - legend
It would be great if there was a spot in the Jameson rack house where just breathing gets ya buzzed.
They dont stock
Elijah Craig
4 roses
Macallan
Or
Glennfidich.
I just saw the giant wall of whisky in the back and had to subscribe... ima finish the video now lol.
Wigle's Kilted Rye is aged in used Laphroaig barrels. Additionally they offer a smoked bourbon but instead of peat the barley is smoked over American hardwoods.
Followed your Glendronach recommendation, nice, thanks
A BIG whisky
Great with ginger biscuits
Westland Peated Whiskey from Seattle, are an American Peated Whiskey, not bourbon though 😊
Greetings from Denmark, love your channel 🥃
Povl Kuldborg Frederiksen a bourbon is a whiskey made in America
@@christophertroutman6012 not if it doesn't apply to bourbon regulations regarding the recipe, Single Malt Whiskey from Seattle aren't bourbon
This is true and yeah good on them for doing that. Yeah sounds like it would be made more from malted barley. If it’s the one I’m thinking of it’s got like a Smokey choc nose to it. It’s amazing. Tbh I think these guys have done a review on it as well.
Westland peated American single malt whiskey
It’s a shame they can’t build a angel’s share collection machine to capture the evaporated whisky and offer it as a marketing ploy!
“Jameson’s- Stolen from Angels!”
Boy, get your ass down to marketing! Jameson wants to talk to you, thats brilliant 😂
What was the Glendronach that you pulled at the end? Look like a orangish label.
8:10 soul tries to escape its host
Rex has no soul
Orange County Distillery (NY not CA) does a peat smoked single malt. They use their own black soil and smoke on the premises. I don't think they age it long enough but they are just getting started.
Daniel mentioned at least 4 or 5 other sherry influenced Scotches and Rex never even asked for a glass. Rex even started to say the toast and Daniel had to interrupt him to give him more whiskey... The mooch is dead! Long live the mooch!
I found out that a bar I go to serves glasses of the 12 and the 18 so I’m definitely trying it
Isnt Andalusia's Reveant Oak a Peated whiskey?
I say, display that wood, my good man. Let all the world enjoy your wood display.
Daniel, Aberlour and GlenDronach are favorites. Where does Glenfarclas stand for you?
Middle of the road. A solid whiskey but not spectacular
I love the stuff
try Aberlour a´bunadh super tooo
‘I want to put my wood in the Window... ‘. Hilarious. Please Keep up the educational and entertaining reviews.
Does your mustache effect the smell and taste of the whisky 🥃?
