A great analogy for the complexity of flavors. Maybe I just haven't had a large enough variety of the Irish, but they've always seemed shallow in their depth of flavors, even while being very very good. Bourbons and Rye can be very complex by comparison, even if you're using a similar mash. Regional grains and styling in the USA can create that complexity.
I will say that two of the things we Americans and the Irish can get along on are our preferences for 1: drinking and 2: fighting. :D

I never tasted Irish Whiskey until 10 years ago when a guy from Ireland opened a Pub here in North Carolina. I started trying them even though I’m not a big drinker. I noticed a huge amount of variety among the Irish whiskeys I tried. I liked all of them pretty well and there was something about each that seemed different than the American bourbon and whiskey I’ve tried. I can’t drink now because of health reasons. I wish I’d had a chance to try a few different kinds of Scotch whiskey too before I had to give it up.

For anyone curious - the primary difference between "Bourbon" and any other whisk(e)y is that Bourbon *must* be aged in new, charred, un-used American white oak barrels whereas other styles are generally aged in used barrels. Inevitably, bourbon ends up having a lot more oak-heavy flavor and a darker color due to that requirement. It also has to be made primarily from corn (as opposed to rye, malted barley, or wheat). We could also talk about how climate affects whisk(e)y, but this is already gonna be too long.
Irish and Scotch whisky is, more often than not, but not always, aged in used barrels - often, but not always, in used bourbon barrels - resulting in a lighter color as well as a flavor that's generally more affected by the choice of grains and yeast (and time spent in the barrel) than the kind of direct wood impact that bourbon gets in only a couple short years in new oak. Since the bourbon (or wine/oloroso/sherry/cognac/whatever.) that came before has already extracted the majority of wood oils/tannins, whatever you age in the barrel next is going to be able to spend a lot more time aging and will have an opportunity to develop a depth/complexity that bourbon could only dream of - but it might take a really long time before it's worth the sip.
With that said, no whisk(e)y style/region is superior, they're all just different - and some couldn't exist as we know them if not for the others. When done right, they can all be incredible.

Darren really seems to know his whiskeys. I do have to say that there were repeated comments that this was whiskey vs Bourbon, but Bourbon is in fact whiskey.
I am American. My first experiences with whiskey (as is probably the case for most people) was budget blended whiskeys, usually in cocktails. My first time really tasting good whiskeys was when I was touring Ireland at the age of 31. For some time, Irish whiskey was all I drank (in terms of whiskey), but I became a confirmed Scotch drinker about a decade later. It wasn't until I was in my early 50s that I first started trying good quality American whiskey, focusing on Bourbons. Now 62, I have developed very broad taste of whiskeys and can honestly say that truly fine examples are made in many countries, and as I have never been one with very nationalist tendencies, I will just as happily drink a fine whiskey from the US, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Taiwan, or wherever, and I will never say one country is categorically best.

I'm not much of a drinker but I enjoy videos like this a lot. I rarely drink whiskey straight. I usually mix it with soda, preferably diet 7 Up and the one I love the most and I buy when I can afford it is Canadian Club Small Batch.

I think and estimate in feet, miles and gallons - it's like my mother tongue, it's hard-coded in my brain. But when it's time to measure and cut the board, or bake - my measuring tools are metric. The math is so much easier.

So here is the interesting Fact, Bourbon needs to be aged in new white oak barrels, and once they are used once, they cant be used to make any more bourbons.....So they sell those barrels to Irish and Scotch manufacturers for cheap, So Bourbon manufacturing makes Irish Whiskey cheaper to produce.

The owner of the company I work for gets Jim beam barrels and three semi trucks of wine grapes then sell it all to his rich buddies to make wine and ferment the grapes in the whiskey barrels, we'd work under the table on weekends what we'd call wine days lol but there was always some bourbon left in the barrels not much but he'd buy like 30 barrels so there'd be enough collectively for each of us to get a half bottle. Come Christmas we'd each get a bottle of bourbon barrel wine
