I don't get homophobia, never did, and never will. All my life I've been told I'm selfish as though it was a bad thing. Personally, I think it's by far my greatest strength and positive quality. Why? Because rather than worry about or bother someone who is gay or lesbian I'm far too busy minding my own business. That's how I managed to save, invest, and retire early. Look after your own business, not everyone else's.
I've met many gays and lesbians in my life and got along with them just fine. Just down the street from me are 2 guys who are married, they seem like all right guys, so what's the problem? Last but not least, I was watching a Pride Parade, and a girl watching the parade had a T shirt that said on it: Some women like other women, get over it. My thoughts exactly.

I’m a 26-year-old gay man. My boyfriend and I were beaten up by four guys outside the mall one night. We were walking and holding hands, enjoying ourselves, minding our own business, and they approached us. They verbally bashed us with a bunch of homophobic slurs and then attacked. It was a bloody mess on our faces by the time they were done. I still have permanent jaw damage from it. That night changed everything - our sense of safety, our sense of freedom, expression, pride. Now we’re too afraid to hold hands in public as a result 😞 I know it’s 2022 but it’s still a dangerous world for us gays to live in…

It seems it's quite difficult to get a good answer online about why people are homophobic, because it's a really interesting question. Phobias are not necessarily rational. I believe the reason people are homophobic is because there is an ingrained feeling in humans to be against anything which is supposedly "unnatural". The classic union of man and woman together is biologically/culturally drilled into people so much that anything outside that is deemed "wrong". I also think people are socially awkward about anything which is not common. If someone dresses unusually or doing any kind of behaviour which is against the most common traits etc. The human brain is wired to be fixed on patterns and routine. Having a truly open mind is a modern thing. Just look at politics - the majority of people are not open minded. We have a long, long way to come.

You are 100% correct, but it should be noted that phobias and homophobia are not the same. Homophobia, despite its name, is not an actual phobia. I suppose it could be, theoretically, where an individual genuinely has an intense anxious fear of gay people that requires professional therapeutic help to overcome, but such a thing is rare, and I’ve personally never heard of it. Homophobia typically refers to the irrational dislike or hatred of gay people, as the suffix “-phobia” can mean either an irrational dislike or hate; or a mental condition in which one has an intense, irrational fear of something (e.g., claustrophobia).

i think this is also because straight men are pressured to be "manly" as in rude, homophobic and sexist as well - to make obscene jokes about women and just be horrible people in general. Gay guys are accepting of it and they respect women a lot more than straight guys do, and that's what most girls want, a sense of safety. They use leviticus and genesis from sodom and gomorra, both old testament and from an era witch cristians don't take advice, even sodom and gomorra taking out of context the many zoophilia happening there. I thought “what does that mean?” But i didnt say anything and went back to my seat.

Some were just being plain old homophobes but others said that their reason for it was that they had traumatic experiences with lgbtq+ people in the past, and to those people I am truly sorry that you experienced that. What those people did was just awfull and totally uncalled for, but you need to understand that not everyone of us is like that. I have met some genuinely nice and loving people from the lgbtq+ community. Heck, my friend group has a mix between a bisexual guy and girl, a gay guy, a lesbian girl, an asexual (me) and a few straight guys and girls, and we all get along great. Homophobia in a scale where people are harmed and harrased is a serious issue, its also cruel that some people get abandoned because they identified as something else than straight.
Even i who isn't a great fan of the lgbtq community can not accept some of the horrible treatment that a significant number of these people have to face, they should be treated normal and have rights like everyone else too, nobody should get home beaten up or utterly broken in the inside just because of their sexuality.
To the people that don't accept the lgbt:
One might/can not accept it which is ok, one can't accept everything but try to tolerate them and understand the fact that these are people, see the person not sexuality, dont let your disagreement and dislike harm, kill, ridicule the people.
I can't tell you to stop being homophobic (the scale where it is internalised or in ones mind, or is just critism), it is something everybody has to find out for themselves and decide for themselves be it out of religion or whatsoever reason. For some it is part of them as so the sexuality to others.
You are not a bad person if you dont support it or accept it, it is your life your view point and opinion.
But the problem starts when you dislike turns to hate and wickedness and determines you to ruin the lives of people and to harm them be it physical violence or psychological torture and violence.
    Live and let live.

It's not about religion. It's that your body subconsciously thinks reproduction is it's ultimate goal. Your road to adulthood is full of hormonal changes made to make you attractive to the **opposite** gender and to reproduce. It's a meaningless never-ending cycle. Why do you think the activity that gives you the most dopamine is s** or mast******ng? Because your body is rewarding you for achieving your goal. Ensuring the specie's survival. Passing on your DNA. As we grow old we lose most of our child making abilities and slowly turn into disposable trash. Then die. That's it. That's the cycle of life. Birth, Reproduction, Death. Being unable to make children in this type of life makes you technically disabled. You know. You won't convince people with Autism they are normal. They cannot communicate with the outside. What's outside their heads.
You won't go and convince them they are normal. Sure you won't kill them either, but you'll still recognize that something is wrong with them. Not being able to pass on your genes is basically failing the ultimate point of life. Puberty is a whole phase for preparing you for that. I grew up in a homophobic home and homophobic society. Thus learning this behavior. I accepted God of Lord and Savior 7 years ago. And even though he teaches us to be kind to love to respect and to not judge others. Because we are much in deep sin as the next man. I have noticed in the past year that I am very aggressive towards homosexuals always criticizing them always making fun of them being very cruel leaving all sorts of nasty comments to them and I just realized I was getting pleasure out of it. Somehow someway the Holy Spirit took those feelings away. As a Christian obviously we believe that homosexuality is a sin and there is a consequence to the sin which is eternal condemnation. A lot of things I do that are not sexual in nature will also get me there. Today. I finally understood that being homophobic is a sin in God's eyes. And all I want to do is please God but I guess this was programmed by society in me I'm glad that's okay today I overcame those feelings. Now I feel very saddened for all the pain I have inflicted I hope God can forgive me. Today I feel like an accept and open my heart to others that are not like me.

I think from my experience there’s 3 main categories that inform people’s negative attitudes
1: Religiosity. This can be mild as in just believing it’s wrong and maybe telling someone that once or twice then moving on or it can be more severe with constant condemnation and beyond that violence in some cases.
2: People who are closeted or uncomfortable about their bisexuality. These are generally people from poor social backgrounds where they have nothing but bad imagery and ideas that relate to gay/bi people.
3: Those who don’t like the camp types/view it as being a notifier of physical weakness and inferiority. Sadly often times these people are proved right by attacks on gay people where’s it’s like a group of people vs 1 or two skinny twinks who can’t fight back very well and thus semi perpetuate this stigma.

    • @wessexfox5197

@Democrats Hate America I never said it meant someone who attacks gay people, I know full well it can be just a mild dislike of gay people. As a paleo-conservative I disagree with your points on it being a mental illness. There is nothing inherently detrimental about them playing on sports teams, that one literally I don’t understand one bit. The others I understand why you and other very educated and sophisticated people around the world have concerns over although I would disagree with you on most of what you raised. I don’t think a law abiding individual, who simply tells his/her boss the truth when they’re asked do you have a wife/husband etc that they’re not straight, deserves to be fired. As for certain professions like school teachers, they’ve been allowed to be teachers for decades now I think if they were disproportionately inclined to abuse kids in a school setting then we would’ve heard about it somehow. More often you hear about a woman teacher in her 20s/30s getting in-appropriately getting involved with a teenage student. Adoption I will give you that one, a lot of gay people are highly left wing and degenerate and anti-tradition so I think adoption is one we need more data. I don’t believe that you can turn someone gay though, it’s a cross that no one chooses to burden. As for marriage, again I’m quite undecided, to me there’s convincing arguments from both sides. In my opinion if a liberal “Christian in name only” church wants to marry a gay couple why is it so bad. Surely if you’re a committed Christian you’ll know it’s not real in the eyes of God or your church. Would a genuine Christian recognise a secular marriage as a real marriage, or a divorced couple marrying for that matter? I don’t think they would so I would just treat the whole gay marriage thing the same way. As someone who is a paleo-con, very anti-abortion, divorce, public displays of improper dress, excessive use of bad language in most conversations, and is mildly Catholic and gay I agree with most of what you say. I despise the majority of gay people who talk about it all the time, make it very public and go on degenerate “pride” parades.

Why do people believe that sort of stuff? Because it is backed up by facts and evidence. What do you have to support your case? “them dang libtards bribed ‘em docs to tell ‘‘em being gay isn’t a diesease”.
Secondly, I do not like mayonnaise. Do I HAVE to eat it? No. Can other people eat it? As long as they never show their preference in public because that shit disgusts me. You see how stupid that is? Because YOU don’t like something, people have to hide? This is why all you Christians have a bad rep. Let's assume if being a homosexual totally normal and like an everyday thing, what's stopping people to parade a march for incestous relationship as long as these people match under the umbrella of liberty, freedom and democracy ( btw I am a fan of all these things), Cause people citing that homosexuality is ok and natural cause animals also do that, this same logic can be used in the support for incest and pedophilic acts.I don't hate anyone, I just wish to get people have a thorough introspective approach to destructive form of liberalism, where disagreeing is not an option unless you think and act within the status quo.

I think your opinion is wrong. Most anti-gays nowadays are reactionary, not religious. They react to the actions and movements of LGBT organisations, and their most common gripe seems to be with what LGBT people are doing to the culture. The gays got even more hate thrown their way when the government started getting creative with their definition of "hate speech", leading to controversy like the reform of Section 5 (UK). This is a practical issue, not a religious one - citizens simply don't like being locked up just to appease pressure groups, believe it or not. A lot of the hate they get today is the fault of their "champions" interfering with other people's lives, and is nothing to do with religion.

Ehh, I noticed with history that homophobia became worse in the 90s, through to bits of the 2010s. But, in the 2000s, some teenagers took things to anotha' level, by labeling certain boys more, (boys who played certain instruments). Years before, in the 80s, a brown, and black boy could play a viola, some people not labeling them as gay, (even if they assumed it was a violin). But in the 2000s, some teenagers would somewhat quickly label certain colored, musical boys as gay, or sneakily bisexual. Bits of unnecessary homophobia can cause wrong actions, others to be deceived, disrespectful speech, or maybe even paranoia schizophrenia. I know, cause I have witnessed some different things, & I am 30. Ciao.

@@johnrainsman6650 What i know, are these things: a) A male homophobe could've grown up hearing one, or both of his parents, or uncles, or an aunt saying homophobic slurs, or homophobic sentences. This caused the homophobe to have more fear in talking to a male, they believe might be gay. The homophobe is a little more likely to talk to a lesbian, but not for a while in public, or certain others might assume he is openly bisexual to the lesbian. If she were bisexual, he would care less how others would view him. 2) Straight girls of color, are more afraid to daydream about a male kissing a male. So, if they are more acquainted with a boy, who they assume is gay, one or more of the girls is more likely to call him a *aggot, when they think they can get away with it.

@@johnrainsman6650 Oh sorry, i just saw your response. I'm from America, & despite that folks have a varied view as to how someone becomes homophobic, here's how i have noticed as to how homophobia gets in root into certain folks: 1) Some folks are afraid that their nieces, or future children or nephews are more likely to have some type of bad situation, with a pedophile. 2) In the South a few boys, no matter what ethnicity, are taught a few lies, about gay and bi men. Certain folks make their boys stay away from openly gay men, or men who might've had a bi past. The main thing is, some straight people, & even some straight children allow their imagination, kinda run wild, assuming that gay folks, & suspected gay folks might wanna be pedophiles, or try to persuade certain family members, or certain folks to do gay acts. It’s really sad that people who beat lgbt+ people up. I wish there was a law that Homophobes can get murdered but in a way of Self-defense. I knew some Gay Folks who carries guns because of Homophobes trying to harass them constantly! I’ve had friends who are Transgender, Gay and Lesbian. I hate the word homophobia! Let me explain the actual definition of the word phobia is an acute and psychological irrational fear (and trust me I know as a lifelong sufferer of arachnophobia) a phobia is not a dislike or prejudice against someone’s sexuality preference, creed, colour, ethnicity or religion for crying out loud! It’s far worse than that it is a debilitating anxiety disorder caused by being confronted that leaves you fearing for your life! I know only likewise arachnophobics will only understand this and I’m comforted by the fact that around 88 million people worldwide share the same irrational fear! A phobia is (I accept purely psychological) which grips you like no other and is it life destroying? Yes there are things in life which most take for granted like going up in the loft for example which I cannot do, my phobia (and I have no idea where it comes from as I am the only family member to suffer it) but believe you me and for those who do not understand it, it’s a bit like having a fully loaded gun pointing at your head! I honestly think if I ever encountered a spider now the fear would probably kill me ( and no as you get older it doesn’t decrease in fact it increases and their is no cure) but my point is that a phobia is far worse than a dislike or a prejudice against someone’s preference of sexuality, someone’s skin colour, someone’s ethnicity or someone’s religious beliefs these are just ignorant and Ill educated dislikes so please once and for all can we stop using the term phobia for these trivial dislikes and actually respect the fact that there are real life phobia sufferers after all my phobia isn’t based on a spider origin all spiders are scary
