    Spectacular video and fantastic capture of the diamond ring. Really the best video of it I think I've seen yet. I was fortunate enough to be in the path of totality for 2017 with a crystal clear sky. People were screaming out loud oh my God oh my God it was just so beautiful and so unbelievably emotional and spiritual to see such a thing. Can't wait for the next one in 2024

    I guess totality last longer being near the equator like that? As compared to north America's 2017 solar eclipse..

    • @DaveKodama
      @DaveKodama  7 років тому +1

      It lasts a little longer at the equator because we're spinning in the same direction of travel as the shadow of the moon. But the bigger effect is how close the moon is and how far away we are from the sun. Both the moon's orbit and earth's orbit are ellipses and not circles.

      *4th Reich* || During the total solar eclipse over the United States on August 12, 2045, totality will last up to six minutes. It's all based on how far the moon is from the Earth at the time of the eclipse.

    It looks like the man and woman in the forefront are not viewing the eclipse safely. During the partial phase, it looks as if the woman is looking at it with her naked eyes, only occasionally holding up her glasses. (Of course, once the sun is completely covered it is safe to look without glasses. ) I understand that eye damage from looking a partial eclipse without protection may not become apparent for several days.

    • @DaveKodama
      @DaveKodama  7 років тому +2

      They were probably looking at clouds which were close by. Prior to totality, we were concerned that clouds would interfere with the view. At the end of totality you can see how close the clouds were. In general a brief glance at the sun will dazzle you but not blind you. That's still not advisable before an eclipse because you'll be dazzled and not see totality well. The danger is that in the excitement of an eclipse, you might be lulled into gazing at the un-eclipsed sun long enough to cause damage.

    the Sun is made of gas, so why is the limit of the photosphere so well delimited?

    • @DaveKodama
      @DaveKodama  6 років тому +1

      It's where the gas density changes so that it becomes transparent to light. Lower down, at higher densities, photons are absorbed and re-radiated. This is also a reason why photons generated at the core take a very long time to reach the edge of the photosphere. Probably the photosphere "edge" is not so well defined as it looks from our perspective.

    I live in Anderson County SC .. about 1.5 miles from direct center I will have Totality at 2:37:38 for 2 minutes and 32 seconds . I am renting out rooms for ... Free !!! ..2 spare bedrooms , open sky , and a 300 sq ft deck .. I heard my county will double in size that day and I have heard on the local news that people around me are charging a 1000 bucks just to camp on their property .. Bring all the tents you want .. I am limited to 3/4 an acre . ..

      IVORY123100 Just read the Family Vision of South Carolina has recalled all their eclipse glasses, now they are considered unsafe for the eyes😩. I hope you didn't get your eclipse eye ware from them. 🙀Also, not to be a downer, but there is a 30% chance of cloud cover where you live. 😡
      But if you film the eclipse, you should put it on UA-cam

    • @IVORY123100
      @IVORY123100 7 років тому

      Funny you say that .. I went to a local convenience store and raised hell .. I bought a pair last week and the news around here is telling everyone .. if is is not ISO 12321-1 rated .. don;t use .. So I told the seller that he sold me bum goods and wanted to argue .. I just happened a few moment ago to look what it read ... ": Disclaimer : The seller of these glasses shall not be liable for any damages arising from the use , non use or misuse of the eclipse glasses " .. MADE IN CHINA .. .. This is a local store I am familiar with and I asked before " Why do you continually raise prices ?" because you think you have a cornered market ? .. I drive 4 miles more and save on average 4 dollars a day going elsewhere .. When a seller doesn't care .. I retract my business .. He argued with me .. and I told him " Why don;t you go out tomorrow and watch through them !!" .. .. Yes you are right ... there is increased chance of cloud cover like today .. on other models they show clear .. not perfectly clear ... You know ... The saddest part of it all ... Is the hucksters and con artist that emerge .. Perhaps part of the darkening of the sun is actually revealing those that have a dark heart for profit at everyone else's expense ... I hope to see the grandeur of God and contemplate the smallness of myself .. Whether it is clear or not .. I will still see the darkening .. and that is sufficient enough .. If I have clear skies .. I would love to video it and share .. But I am not computer savvy and I don;t own an I-Phone with a camera ... If I could I would Peace

      What is not shown in the video is how close we came to not seeing the eclipse. That morning, when we woke up it was raining cats and dogs. I was pretty sure it was going to be a bust. But miraculously the clouds cleared long enough to see the entire totality without cloud interference.
