There is more to life than GDP and shit like that. There are still loads of people in poverty and people are more divided now than they were then. Life was much simpler and less stressful then. It wasn't perfect, but people still ate with their families at night, had Sundays off to rest and be thankful for what they had and knew that the biggest blessings were the people in our lives and good health. Money sustained us, but it didn't control us as much as it does now. Society is screwed up because our priorities are all out of whack. I don't know how old you are, but the 70's were the last of our great society. The 80's were the beginning of the end.
I am in the US. At one time nothing was open on Sunday and families got together and spent the day together. That doesn't happen in the US anymore. Everything is open and most families barely see each other. People in the US work two and sometimes three jobs just to make ends meet. You don't live in the US so you really can't comment. I live here now and lived here back in 1979. We are a terribly divided country filled with angry, bitter people and it is unbelievably sad. The stress level on people is high here and most people are on some kind of prescription drugs to help them deal with life. People shooting each other, violence in schools, murder and mayhem everywhere. It is really getting bad here and it is only going to get worse. Trump has only made things worse here and has created lots of hate between people. If Germany is better, then count your lucky stars.
Again, you don't live here. Sure I mentioned the world, but my world is here in the US, so I guess I can't comment on life in other places as you can't comment on life here. I think that things really changed after 9/11, but the change in society here started with President Kennedy's assassination(wasn't born yet) and really started to ramp up in the 80's. Anyhow, I don't know why my feelings are so important to you and why you feel the need to tell me that I am wrong in my perceptions of my world.
Hasn't happened in 10,000 years or so. That's more than 10,000 total solar eclipses that have futilely tried to remind us of the darkness or war. Will it be more or less than 10,000 years before we can say 'Yes, it does!' 🌝🌛🌚🕊️🌚🌜🌝
I remember it well. I was 13 years old and living in NW Oregon and the entire sky was covered in clouds. I also remember watching this news coverage surprised it was getting national coverage. They said the next eclipse would be in 2017 and I remember thinking how far away that was. Not so much now.
Me too, I was 12, would turn 13 in July of 1979. I remember seeing this as well and thinking how far 2017 would be although even then, I was going to make plans to drive and see see the 2017 eclipse. I remember watching the partial eclipses of 1984 and 1994 as well.
I was in High School. The teacher took our class to the library but they wouldn't let us go outside. They were afraid we would hurt our eyes looking at it :( So all I remember is it getting dark outside, looking through the library window.
I remember seeing the 1984 eclipse sitting on the hood of my car in the school parking lot (I was a junior then) and the 1994 one, at work, we all took our lunch hours to watch it. I also remember tuning in distant AM stations when the eclipse happened since it blocked the sun and creating night time conditions, Being a ham radio operator, it is interesting studying how it affects radio waves. I plan on driving south to at least the 95% line.
I was 7 in 1979 and I have just a snippet of the past seared into my brain like Mt. St. Helens. The sky got real dark for a few minutes. Multnomah Village, SW Portland, Oregon.
I skipped school, took my snowmobile on top of a high hill, built a camp fire before the eclipse. During the eclipse when it was dark, dogs started barking, coyotes howling, camp fire lighting up the area, auto street lights went on in near by town.was awesome, great childhood memory

It is interesting that I had never heard of this eclipse until just a few days ago, and I lived in the area a few weeks later. However, the interesting thing is that the broadcaster announced the next visible eclipse would be on the 21st of August of this year, (8:10) but he mentions it as being so many years away, like: "I might be dead by then."
Sadly we lost Frank just 4 years later in July 1983. It would be a nice tribute if ABC were to show this to start their coverage on Aug. 21, at least the portion where he mentions the date.
Thanks for posting this, Steve -- this was fun to watch. Frank Reynolds was a true pro... and you can tell he was really enjoying himself here. It would be interesting to see how Cronkite covered this, since he was always such a space buff.
Looking at this today on August 19, 2017. So weird to hear Frank Reynolds say back then on February 26, 1979 that there will not be another total solar eclipse visible here in the United States again until August 21, 2017. We're now two days away from The Great American Solar Eclipse.
Wow I remember this so clearly from Helena. Got to stay home from school half the day to see it. My family built pinhole boxes to see the eclipse and we passed around a pair of welding goggles.

All I can say is the world had problems then as it does now, but as I pointed out in another message, it is ironic then at that time, the Soviets were involved in Afghanistan with the invasion 10 months later and now our troops (U.S.) is there today. All I can say is I hope there is good weather for all to enjoy it.,
I was a freshman in high school when this happened. I was in a science class and our teacher showed us how to make a hole in the side of a cardboard box so the eclipse could be seen inside the box. It wasn't a total eclipse in SLC - it was about 90%, but it was awesome to see. Fast forward 38 years to today I was watching the eclipse with the high school kids that are in my science class. We didn't do the cardboard box with a hole trick, but we did watch it happen with the special eclipse glasses that the school purchased for all of the students and faculty. Again, it wasn't a total eclipse here in SLC, but it was at about 90%, just like the last time I saw it. What a great day it was then and today.
I heard a snippet of this broadcast, the popular part talking about the next one being 38 years from then. Idk, the fact that he died 4 years after this, when i came looking for this expecting him to have seen the "next" eclipse just makes me sad
I was outside playing out door hockey at approx.noon when this took place. All the other kids were watching this at school with view finders but I talked a friend into going to play hockey because I knew even back then there might not be one single person in the world watching it and playing hockey at the same time.Interesting what the late Frank Reynolds said at the end "May the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace"
My husband is a amateur astronomer. In 1979 he had just finished building his first telescope, after grinding his own lens at the Adler Planetarium. He took a image of the sun during the eclipse through his telescope with our SLR camera. We still have that image today. Never thought then that we would be able to see our second eclipse this year...two in a lifetime. Exciting.
Tremendous beautiful!! I have seen it when I was in fifth grade in school in Redding, CA. Very clear day. When the solar eclipsed there are stars and very dark everywhere. Wow. I have never forget that day.
If you zoom over to 4:20 in this video clip you would be able to see the midnight-looking Portland skyline, where it gets totally dark due to the eclipse, people may have said "that looks very strange, like its night time already" its like a 12 hour difference but only lasted for a couple of minutes, before returning to normal.
Lady BlackstarDust cool, here in oklahoma city it supposed to be about 87% partial here so it'll get pretty dim outside, I can't wait for tomorrow..I'm gonna be recording the eclipse like crazy..lol..
Frank Reynolds was class personified-he was a superior newscaster-certainly better than anyone on now--everyone talks about Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings etc--yet none Reynolds is hardly mentioned
So it's happening tomorrow and I'm sad to hear him say that he wishes the eclipse will fall on a world of peace. The world is anything BUT peaceful rn. May God have mercy on everyone's souls. I hope everyone enjoys the eclipse.
Notice a dramatic shift in Portland Oregon if you zoom to 4:20 and 9:15 (its like a 12-hour difference in over a span of a couple of minutes), the sky transforms from day to a nightime-looking scenario (like its midnight) and back to day time in over a 10 minute period during the total solar eclipse.
If its was a clear sky in Portland Oregon during a total solar eclipse, it would not be this black, it would look more like a 360 degree sunset. ua-cam.com/video/oT-Z9Ht5i5I/v-deo.html
I was in the 3rd grade in Kennewick, WA when this happened. They took us out into the playground and made us stand behind blankets so we wouldn't look directly at the sun until the eclipse was total. It wasn't cloudy at all, it was beautiful.
I was there! Went to Glasgow, MT with my astronomy class from college in Colorado. That day it was a heat wave with the temp hitting a balmy 0 degrees. If you ever get the chance to go, do it. It is unbelievable!
It passed over my dad’s house in Rochester, WA and my mom’s in Battle Ground, WA. I didn’t get off work in time to go to Salem for 2017 but did go to Texas for 2024.
I remember this in grade school, I remember our teacher helping us make glasses out of layers of exposed film to look at it, - very dangerous, but then we thought it was pretty cool back then! we also did the pin hole with white construction paper. looks like the best view for the 2017 one will be near Cincinnati.
Actually, it was a rerun of Happy Days. The network preemption notice just before this broadcast broke up so badly I couldn't include it at the beginning.
I was in Goldendale in 1979 and filmed the eclipse with a arriflex M 16mm motion picture camera. It was cloudy and at the moment near the eclipse the clouds parted and the sky was clear. What an amazing view! I shot a close up with a 25-250 angenieux zoom lens and saw Bailey's beads and a wonderful corona.
I was in 4th grade at Sacred Heart Elementary School; Ely, Nevada. We went out onto the playground with makeshift reflective solar viewers. Funny, haven't even thought of it until now, thirty three years later. It all comes back to memory like a snap!
At the 4:11 mark, in another window......begin playing this youtube video to hear thou audio. Expand this wonderful video of Frank Reynolds and the video from ABC News......IT IS AMAZING!!!!! Mrmilkcarton - On The Break
I was in College in Alberta and our class was next to the Welding class so our teacher took us out with the proper welding glass to watch this. It was about 85 % covered in Edmonton and it did get somewhat dark and the birds started to chirp. I will not forget this.
I remember that eclipse. I was 7 years old and they called an assembly outside right when school started. It was a bit cloudy but I remember everything getting really dark. It was pretty weird
This is really amazing stuff and important part of American TV history. Thank you so much for uploading this and thanks to American Express for moving the sun.
I remember this. I live across the bridge from Portland and still do. That was a bit scary even though I knew what was going on. My son was 5 at the time and he was ok until it went dark. He started to cry a bit but then was ok when it started to get brighter.
I lived in Seattle, was 15 and took the day off from school. I was extremely lucky and got transported over to Ellensburg-Yakima by the great dad of Pulshiz, in the awesome Cinema associates van. We ate thick steaks and then noticed everyone had mylar on their equipment. So we walked around asking, "Is this your lar or my lar"? Then we saw baileys beads and totality. It totally ruled! I became an eclipse chaser and saw the great July 11 1991 from Mazatlan and the May 10 1994 from El Paso. I can't wait to see the upcoming Aug 21 2017 one now, because I have been waiting since Feb 26th 1979 :) Please don't be cloudy. lol
IT’S AUGUST 21ST, 2017 RIGHT NOW! (At least on the East Coast) Just rewatched the video and got chills. Feels weird in a good way that this date must’ve seemed so far for them is TODAY. I first watched this video a couple of years ago and that’s how I first learned about and got interested in the solar eclipse. Thanks so much for recording and uploading this historical footage!🌑☀️
I was working in Eastern Washington State in 1979 when the Eclipse happened there (a year before St Helens went boom), and I gotta say that if you get a chance to see the one coming this year, you do not want to miss it.
The cloud cover was a factor even in Texas for the 2024 one. An hour or so before the eclipse, I drove into the path on I-45 north and found a spot that had less cloud cover in the southern sky in Fairfield, Texas. I drove 700 miles the day before it from ABQ to my sister’s house in Madisonville, so I feel for the people this day in 1979 that drove 400-500 through the Rockies.
Dude, if you check out the "more info" description of the video, you'll see it says the broadcast was at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time on a Monday, not prime time. Going live to breaking news in remote locations was still a bit of a feat back in 1979, and ABC's coverage of the eclipse was typical of the network's policy of pushing the envelop on news coverage. If ABC hadn't been running this coverage of the eclipse, viewers would have seen the typical reruns of Happy Days during that time slot.

Garth Haycock hey would you look at that! i'm a freshman now and we did that hole on paper today in my science class!:)
when i went to the adler planetarium, I saw a LOT of people with those cardboard box projectors around actually, it was funny but cool
8:10 Wow, time flies! Thank God I live in southern Illinois...right in the path :) Don't even have to leave the house!
I was near Goldendale, WA when this happened.... standing next to a life-size replica of Stonehenge !!!!
Amazing.
The eclipse is 5 days from now. Hearing someone 38 years ago talk about next week as if it its so far away gave me goosebumps.
who would have thought I'm living on the exact day he mentioned. Today is Aug 21 2017. 😊
I heard a snippet of this broadcast, the popular part talking about the next one being 38 years from then. Idk, the fact that he died 4 years after this, when i came looking for this expecting him to have seen the "next" eclipse just makes me sad
6:30 - Frank Reynolds at his best!
Exciting.
Wait. The Adler Planetarium used to have equipment to make your own telescope with?
Tremendous beautiful!! I have seen it when I was in fifth grade in school in Redding, CA. Very clear day. When the solar eclipsed there are stars and very dark everywhere. Wow. I have never forget that day.
If you zoom over to 4:20 in this video clip you would be able to see the midnight-looking Portland skyline, where it gets totally dark due to the eclipse, people may have said "that looks very strange, like its night time already" its like a 12 hour difference but only lasted for a couple of minutes, before returning to normal.
18 months away
I've been looking forward to this for about two years, too. We'll be 76% partial. Recuperating from sugery, so staying local. Enjoy!
I saw the 2/26/79 toltal eclipse that was about 85% partial in Santa Cruz. It got like twilight.
Justin Williams days away
Lady BlackstarDust cool, here in oklahoma city it supposed to be about 87% partial here so it'll get pretty dim outside, I can't wait for tomorrow..I'm gonna be recording the eclipse like crazy..lol..
It's sad that at the end of the video he says, "may the shadow of the moon fall on a world of peace" in 2017.
Wow amazing that I witnessed two solar eclipse coverage and to hear them mention today's date 38 years ago is speechless!!!!! Love the history
An astronaut stepped in gum on the moon...
He's stuck in orbit
"May the shadow of the moon fall on a world at peace" 38 years later...
I was in the 3rd grade in Kennewick, WA when this happened. They took us out into the playground and made us stand behind blankets so we wouldn't look directly at the sun until the eclipse was total. It wasn't cloudy at all, it was beautiful.
9:32 a promise ABC lived up too. I remember watching the 2017 ABC News coverage with David Muir that day. Already been 5 years wtf
Can't wait 'til 2017!!!---hopefully you all have good weather in your area when this event takes place!
I'm in Ohio. It's only going to be a partial eclipse here.
There is another eclipse in 2024 that will be total in parts of Ohio!
One week to go ---AT LAST!!! Hopefully it'll be clear in your area for this event! Good Luck!!!
How do you still remember to comment on this
good memory :}
I remember this in grade school, I remember our teacher helping us make glasses out of layers of exposed film to look at it, - very dangerous, but then we thought it was pretty cool back then! we also did the pin hole with white construction paper. looks like the best view for the 2017 one will be near Cincinnati.
Anyone here after the eclipse 2017? Just saw it from Kitchener, Canada and it was incredible.
Rest in peace Frank 🙏🏻
I remember this. I live across the bridge from Portland and still do. That was a bit scary even though I knew what was going on. My son was 5 at the time and he was ok until it went dark. He started to cry a bit but then was ok when it started to get brighter.
Impressive that astronomers can predict eclipses accurately decades in advance.
And here we are! ABC is fulfilling its 38-year promise they gave as we speak.
I can't wait to see the upcoming Aug 21 2017 one now, because I have been waiting since Feb 26th 1979 :)
Please don't be cloudy. lol
I love this story! Thanks for sharing.
Zlobla the Egg Exploder AWESOMEEEEE
Zlobla the Egg Exploder Did you get to see it?
Saw the 2017 one and it was amazing. Looking forward to 2024.
'wont be seen again until 2017".......well here we are
I was working in Eastern Washington State in 1979 when the Eclipse happened there (a year before St Helens went boom), and I gotta say that if you get a chance to see the one coming this year, you do not want to miss it.
It's hard to believe 38 years passed in the blink of an eye.
Watching on August 20th, 2017 0_0
I'm watching this February 26th 1979
Jalentablet K lol
I’m watching this in a galaxy, far far away. Wait, that’s no moo...
I live in Oregon. Its amazing how they mentioned August 21st 2017 back then. Now that's only 10 days away from now. 8-11-17
I missed this one by 7 months. Gotta wait until 2017!
we failed him :(
if I am not in the path of totality, can I still see the eclipse, I am in Bradenton
It is now Friday, August 11, 2017.
If you're from 2024 is the dab still relevent?
ٌRidicuolus
Yes
No
No
@@idontknow20404 ok thanks
This was my first eclipse trip 26th Feb 1979 I went to Winipeg Canada. I have now been to 13 eclipses the last one in Turkey. See Video
