  • Barnabas is dying and the only thing that Josette thinks that she can do is talk to the witch and she goes to the jail to visit Vicki. Vicki explains that she is not the witch but knows that Josette is in mortal danger. Vicki tells Josette to look for the book that Vicki brought back from 1967.

Some good teaching of American history here. Bangor WAS in Massachusetts in 1795. Maine did not break away from Massachusetts to become its own state until 1820.

Poor Vicky. She idolized Josette when she first heard and read about her, and then the ghost of Josette came to her rescue when she was abducted by Matthew Morgan. However, Josette was an antagonist toward Vicky when the latter went back in time.

Perhaps Josette's ghost came to Vicky's rescue because Josette wanted to atone for antagonizing Vicky and not believing Vicky when she tried to warn her to leave Collinsport. After all, when Vicky first saw Josette's ghost, Josette had already met Vicky about 170 years ago, and knew that Vicky had been correct about her warning to Josette in 1795.

@@luminiferous1960 Except that Vicki's experience of going back to 1795 happened after her experience as Matthew's hostage.
Josette's spirit would have had no knowledge of Vicki's future trip to Josette's own time at the time she saved Vicki from Matthew.

@@BethHarmon-uv7tl It depends on how one views time and time travel.
In my view, the entire timeline - past, present, and future, including all time travel loops - exist. This is based on Einstein's 4-D block universe concept.* In this case, Vicki's existence in 1795, and the events associated with her then, like her warning Josette, happened then, and there is no other version of the past that happened and then was changed by her time travel.
Furthermore, one conception of the eternity that spirits inhabit is that it is an existence outside of spacetime rather than just an existence through an unlimited amount of time. Outside of spacetime, spirits can see the whole of the block universe and the timeline that was theirs within it. C.S. Lewis presents such a view of eternity being outside of space and time in his book Mere Christianity.
This is how Josette's spirit knows about Vicki's trying to help her in 1795, and then projects herself from eternity back into spacetime as a ghost to help Vicki at the appropriate point in the timeline. Of course in the block universe concept, Josette's projection into the timeline as a ghost also already exists in the block universe. Everything past, present and future just "is" in the block universe.
*More details about the block universe: Albert Einstein's theory of relativity suggests that time and space are woven together to form a four-dimensional space-time continuum, or "block universe," that encompasses the entire past, present, and future. In this concept, all events that have happened and will happen already exist, and the past, present, and future are equally real. Einstein's equations imply that everything in the block universe is predetermined by the initial conditions of the cosmos, and that surprises only seem to occur. In 1955, Einstein wrote, "For us believing physicists, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."

Angelique is a piece of work. She knows Barnabas is very likely dying at this point, and has no conscience at all about threatening him over Josette on his deathbed. No wonder he doesn't want his 'loving, devoted wife' anywhere near him in the time he has left.
Sweet scene where Joshua apologizes to Barnabas for the way he treated him over his marrying Angelique. Though Barnabas has got to be thinking at this point he should have listened to his father about her.
The last thing Vicki should have done was to tell Josette about the book. No matter how skeptical Josette was to her claims of innocence before telling her about the book, all Vicki did by mentioning it was making herself look even more guilty in Josette's eyes.
I appreciate Vicki wanting to prevent Josette's demise, but the way she went about it was just too stupid no matter how you look at it.

Vicky should have told Josette that if she was a witch, she would not harm Barnabas, who has been nothing but kind to her. If she was a witch, her first target would be Trask.
