    Before everyone asks me in the comments why i bough this, it is for a JBOD Disk array that is freely expandable with out and hardware raid, and i will be using freenas and the SCOS never came with it and i will not be spending 50,000 to renew or purchase a new dell OS

    Thanks for this videos, i started thinking about getting an r610 when i saw a pile of them stacked where i work, but i thought that was crazy to build a rack at home, your videos changed my mind. I have my first r610 on the way! :>

      Anytime buddy! Thanks for watching! :) and it is never too crazy to build server racks with crazy amounts of gear in them! :)
      Woohoo! how big is the R610?!

    I see the date on this video is five years ago but tomorrow I’m working on a government SC 9000 new regeneration with 13 additional devices , SC 420 Flash Dr. with two sc9000 controls on high-availability. You were doing this five years ago you must be some kind of genius man that’s pretty cool.

      Hi! Thank you, yeah I built my own Storage platform utilizing the SC8000 units, I also was able to build on top of this 4 EMC DAE shelves with 12x SSDs, 24 x4TB drives back then it was a fun little project. I used Beefy LSI Dell TFJRW Controller Quad Port SFF-8644 I/O Host Bus Adapter Compellent SC8000. I was able to read 4.1GB/s and 3.5-7GB/s write.

    Did you keep a copy of the Dell Compellent - SC8000 firmware on the boot device ?

  • @Smokingb0b
    @Smokingb0b 7 років тому +3

    Its not a raid card. Its the Cache card. (On the compellent at least) :) And the HBA is the back-end SAS card. Used to attach the Jbods. Your right though. You can do anything with them outside the compellent as they have propitiatory firmware.
    You dont need to renew the SCOS (The OS you said cost 50k) You can get it from the dell support site. While your there there are change of ownership forms. Fill it out and then e-mail cml_licensing@dell.com They will reissue whatever licenses and SSH the system TAG is associated with. Then you can reinstall the latest SCOS (7.1.12) and licenses. However you will need a enclosure (SC200-SC220) with a MINIMUM of 7 drives to initialize the system fully. (No disks and it will just continually reboot looking for disks)
    Do note the SC8000 DOES NOT do direct attach (even SAS). So you will need a iSCSI or FC card and switches. And they need to be compellent iSCSI or FC cards. Nothing else will work (Again propitiatory firmware)
    Hope that helps.
    p.s If you do get disks Dell compellent disks only (AGAIN propitiatory firmware).

    Yesterday (july/25/22) my employer assigned me the 6 month study cert/course on EMC Data Domain, VXrail & Compellant. Today, one day later dispatch gave me my first (solo, not an assist but lead tech) Compellant call. I brought it up to boss & he had the call removed from my schedule. When I woke up & saw that in my schedule I went into panic mode. Crisis over (for now).

    Holy cow! How and where the heck did you get that? I'd love one, though doubt I'd have either the space or the money; never did understand how those actually run ... OS is some sort of Linux, I'd think? Can it run Windows storage 2016, by any chance? I'm not a Dell geek at all? LOL

      i got like 4 of them i have no idea what to do with them, got them at an auction with a bunch of shelfs. i dont know if they will run without a licnese.

    You said it had a valid warranty so did you try calling dell to try to make use of the next business day parts delivery warranty that is valid to 2017 to end up with the enterprise software in hand ?

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому +1

      this is not the same as regular dell warranty support, after spending time researching dell compellent os is registered to the original user that did the purchase so i cant do any ownership transfer at all on this appliance, i have lots of other dell servers we bought for our data center we will be doing colo at and all of them have warranty till 2017 and i was able to get anything i need flawlessly.

    Wouldn't this make a better server than the r810 for esxi? (stronger CPU's)

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому

      Not really, R810 is built from the ground up mainly for Virtualization, as this is doing storage, and R810 - has 4 Sockets, that support E7s as well, so at the end of the day i will still have my VMs on a R810 :)

    What LSI External HBA was that? Wondering why it can't be used with FreeNAS?

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому

      Off the top of my head i cant remember, but it is a Dell proprietary Compellent HBA, Freenas doesn't like it and freezes up during installation. I have a regular SAS HBA coming in that i bought and is supported by freenas :)

    • @mirfster7425
      @mirfster7425 7 років тому +1

      Looks a lot like a LSI 9201-16e. If by Dell, it more than likely is a LSI 9202-16, which is an version only sold to OEMs. They usually slap on their own branded Firmware and BIOS.
      Thinking that you could cross-flash that to a LSI 9201-16e and FreeNAS would work fine with it.
      Of course I could be totally wrong in my guess of what it is... :)

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому +1

      Yep it is! its a tad little different but this one is branded with many mini compellent logos and i dont know how easy it would be to flash the firmware, and their so cheap on ebay for 40.00 a card that its easier to buy it then put time and effort in to it! :P

    Thank you for the video. A question I have: can you place front hard drive cage + backplane (of the R720) connected to a regular SAS RAID card ? has anyone tried it on The SC8000 ?

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  2 роки тому

      Hi! You should be able too depending on the raid card you have the newer raid cards are much more compatible with many configurations

    Do these sc devices need a license from dell even after not using compellant ($50k)?

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  2 роки тому

      Hi - i was able to run it when i downloaded all the OS files from Dell but to unlock certain features theres licenses. Might be able to get a trial license since this is EOL product.

    Did not fully understand why you bought this server for, trying to install freenas on a server without hdd space, never really saw a nas/nas with hdd on the outside of the server, it could be a good esxi host ...

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому +1

      cause i am building a expandable JBOD array that is freely expandable with out and hardware raid and i got this for a cheap price and couldn't not get it even if i used it as a esxi host but it will be a storage controller for my SC200s that will have 2 TB SAS drives

    So in other words, no advantage in having these over something like a 720?

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому

      these are great if you want to get a LSI Raid card that supports SAS 6Gb/s and a Dell Powervault or any array and load freenas or any other OS on a usb and use it as a storage controller or an hypervisor

    • @charlesblack4565
      @charlesblack4565 7 років тому

      Correct. The SC800 is based off of the R720 chassis. Much of he hardware is the same with bios and firmware differing from the normal server series. Frankly, I don't see the point of this build unless there was a great discount compared to an equivalent R720. The Compellent SCOS is some of the best in the world. Choosing not to use it means that you miss out on the main advantage of purchasing the differing hardware. Either way, good luck and have fun.

    • @Virtualbytes1
      @Virtualbytes1  7 років тому

      Yep, and i cant use the Storage software, cause im not the main person that purchased so i cant login to the compellent portal, and as well the preloaded one on the SD card doesn't work its faulty/corrupted - all it does it freezes and sits there during boot up and doesn't load anywhere, so no point of saving it there, so i took out the card and loaded freenas which will be nice as well and to spend 50k or so on just renewal/purchase of the dell SCOS is outrageous! anyway yeah its an awesome server to have even if i make my own custom array :)

    • @charlesblack4565
      @charlesblack4565 7 років тому +1

      50K is a handful for a home lab. If you knew the OS wasn't part of the deal, I'm not sure why you bought it. As I said, this truly is a modified R720. The two cards you were holding in the video were the 4-port LSISAS9201 and the CHA3 cache card. At bare minimum, the cache card and SD card are the only two required for a boot operation. My guess is the seller you purchased this from reset SCOS before selling. If so, this would mean that it would only boot to a generic screen from VGA output and it would really require a RS-232 connection to the back for terminal-based configuration. It's rare for SCOS to get corrupt. If it really did and you had your hands on a SCOS iso, you could run some chdsk options for a general repair. Downside to having a SAN of this caliber as a home lab is that all SC enclosures only accept SAS drives, which are loud and expensive per GB. Compellent is the same league as many other flash-SAN Vendors where they create walled gardens for hw compatibility.

      +Charles Black Either way, good luck and have fun. It's a great piece of hardware with much potential. When you get it up and running, it'll definitely complement the rest of your environment.
