Dell PowerEdge R620 & FreeNAS overview of a baredoned storage server FOLLOW MY SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram : gnet_datacenter Facebook : / gnetdatacenterproject
Hey! Pretty interesting! I have a R620 at home as well but struggling without any HBA Card. Do you recommend buying a HBA card or am I also able to add additional SATA drives using the SAS connector located on the mainboard directly? Hardware RAID and ZFS is not my recommended way and I am having plenty of errors. But now I am trying to get the best solution for R620 + FreeNAS. Thank you!
Hi Nice switches and dell's there. sorry to over old ground but did you get rid of your Sc8000? Did it work like a r720 as in with adding a backplane to to Sc8000 or any bios mods? Or should I bin Sc8000 board and put in a 720 from scratch.
Nice man. I have got a question for you regarding storage pools. What would be the better choice of the two options. Creating a storage pool in Windows Server 2019 to host multiple hard drives ranging in capacity from 1 TB to 4TB or using a third party software such as unraid or drive bender?
Thank you for the video. What kind of SD card did you use to install the OS on? Does it needed to be of a certain speed grade? Did you install Ubuntu on SD card as well?
I have migrated to Windows Storage Spaces in Windows Server 2019 and utilizing ReFS for the resiliency and other additional features! This new update to storage spaces has been way more stable than FreeNAS. FreeNAS does not like some Storage shelves it causes the whole array to crash, and then you have to reboot it to bring back online
Hi the MD1220 Direct Attached Storage you can use a external HBA to connect the PowerVault with SAS cables and present it to TrueNAS I have done this before
If your disks are the limiting factor, why not bring back the PERC and backplane and install some SSDs directly in the Storage controller as for SSD caching? If you just don't need more performance, fair enough. Otherwise, try it out! =)
That was my old home lab - it was around $50-70.00 a month for electricity which it is still cheaper than any cloud provider out there. Plus you own the data hosting your own servers at home! New home lab will be coming soon! It will consist of lots of new gear! Such as that Dell R740XD and many more to come. Stay Tuned!
Hey tom ! When is the next video coming ? Would you be able to show us the VMware environment ? Looking forward to the next video ! :)
are those just like the normal SD card modules for those? I'm thinking of getting a R620 pretty soon here, so I'm trying to accurately prepare.

I have my SC8000s and do not update the bios to a R720 it will cause the fans to be 100% but other than that I have them but am selling them

Definitely would stay away from unraid, I have used ZFS and many other solutions and Storage Spaces with ReFS is the most dominant and stable

Since the new version of TrueNAS/FreeNAS you cannot install it on a SD card or USB it has to be on a dedicated disk like an SSD.
Hows Freenas running on the SD cards? I read that on 11.2, they recommend now to run the os on SSDs.

Have you tried StarWind Virutal SAN?
Be interested to see a bit about your vSAN Lab
Yeah ill get more info for everyone!
I have a MD 1220, can I use it in conjunction with a R630 and TrueNAS?

@@Virtualbytes1 thank you, do you have a video?
Were is Freenass ?
Great video. Looking forward to seeing the next one. It's been a while now. When do you think you will be able to post another?

wow how much electricity does that rack use a month in kWh?
