There are two versions of the R720XD, one SFF (2.5" front bays), one LFF (3.5" front bays). They sell a different kit for each version, but my understanding is that the cable length is the only difference between the two. I wouldn't count on Dell to sell you the right parts. They recently sent me 3.5" drives for a 2.5" chassis I just got from them 6 months ago. It also looks like you switched the sides of the monitoring cable between the motherboard and rear backplane. They have a sleeve near the connector that say BP and MB. Doubt it matters in this case, but could cause issues with iDRAC monitoring or something like that if both sides aren't wired the same. It's a real shame that you can't fit these to the standard R270s, only the xds.
I double checked on my R270 (8x3.5" front bays), and while the motherboard connections are the same, there are no connections available to the backplane on the front. Also I think the DVD cable takes up one of the cable slots on the motherboard that you'd use for the rear backplane?
Pity, but I guess I could use a PCI riser card for some NVME drives or similar, and have the same effect.
Wish I had access to a setup like that for off site backup.
thanks for the video. helped me get started. just FYI, he has the 2.5" front drive version of the R720XD. the 9 pin cables and rear SASA1 cables are located on the motherboard in a different area for the 3.5" front drive version. look for another video that. the one i watched is ua-cam.com/video/azSPpVf_zFc/v-deo.html

When you did server hosting at your home did you do it in a DMZ? If so with what? And if not with a DMZ then was in it your local network or in a separate network?
Tyler Lindberg Yep! I did it in a DMZ on a vSS which was standard switch now I use distributed switches which let my isolate it much better in a DMZ network
GNET Data Center so then I take it you created the DMZ with vlans in the swtch? I only ask because im stuck on creating a dmz for my forward facing servers.
Yep that was before. Now i have NSX so no more VLANs at the switches. I have everything micro-segmented

Is there a chasis for this that you can get? I see the backplane on ebay. I see the kits but can't confirm if the 2.5 chasis is included. It looks like it just slides in and offsets on the riser.
There are R720XD series servers out there that have the flex bay in the rear for the 2.5” drives
I also have a r720xd but without the rear backplane they are way to expensive if you ask me they cost more than the front one in my case :(

It does not, only from the next gen "730" model does it support PCIe bi-furcation

Is it possible to change r720xd from 12 bays 3.5 to 24 bays 2.5? If yes , wich parts do I have to buy? Thanks
