  • Roof top tent rack mods and hacks! This 4x4 camping beast is almost ready for the woods! Today we are going to push our creativity and add some cheap modifications to our roof top tent bed rack! This video is basically a second episode to the bed rack build. In the first episode we built the rack from scratch and now we need to finish it. I needed to install a deep cycle battery and I wanted to figure out a way to do it without an isolator. Lots of 12 volt tech on the agenda today and I can't wait to get started!

    Nate, use a voltage sensitive relay for charging your auxiliary batteries. It’s easily installed. BEP, Blue Sea Systems, etc. All marine applications. No real voltage loss, and they have a switch (relay) to prevent the aux battery from cannibalising your starting battery

    • @amorton94
      @amorton94 4 роки тому

      Are you saying that there is something wrong with his current setup?

    • @speedandmarine9066
      @speedandmarine9066 4 роки тому +5

      @@amorton94 No that it's wrong, but VSR's (voltage sensitive relay) is a better way to charge an aux battery. They work automatically once the alternator is charging AND the main batteries are at a high enough state of charge for system voltage to be around 13.5 (depends on specific relay) and they are also rated for 75-150 amps rather than 30ish for a typical Bosch style relay.

      Speed and Marine
      I was concerned with the potential of 140A going through a little relay. I’ve used an old style ‘ford’ starter solenoid to do what he’s doing, but the oil pressure trigger with the correct relay is a better idea. The VSR is even better, as well as 150A feed wire.

    • @offroadsoda

      Definitely needs an ACR to manage the charge control or one puts the alternator and batteries at risk for a shorter lifespan.

    When I wire stuff like the second battery to run off the charging system I use an adjustable Hobbs switch off the oil pressure, that way even though the ignition is on it doesn't connect the two batteries until the engines running with oil pressure.

      @@Porroquio sorry I came up with that before the internet was a thing🤣 I used an adjustable oil pressure switch to interrupt the ground on a relay to the second battery, when there is no oil pressure the second battery is completely isolated. A manual toggle switch can be installed to bypass the oil pressure switch so you can engage the second battery at will

    Heads up a deep cycle battery has different charging profiles than a regular battery. Your alternator is setup to charge standard batteries. To change a deep cycle battery in your truck you should technically be using a DC to DC converter. Ctek makes em, probably a bunch of others as well. Using a relay or an isolator will work but will probably shorten the life of the battery.
    Great job on the video, I'm thinking of using some of the design features from this rack and some features of the Landover rack to build something for my ram. Just have to make the entire rack quick release for when I have to pull the gooseneck.

    Great stuff! Really enjoy following along with your builds. I made custom drones for a while and have a tip for the fraying of the expando cable sleeve. If you put the heat shrink over the sleeving/joint and then burn the heat shrink, it will pull the expando tight, melt it together, and leave a really nice clean end. Then cut the burnt heat shrink off and just leave the clean expando joint or add another piece of heat shrink and heat appropriately to finish the look. Works great, looks super clean, and no burnt finger tips.

    I've done exactly that battery setup in my truck. My relay is off the accessory circuit and I used some really fat cable (something like 0 guage) in case I completely drain the deep cycle and then start up the truck, it will draw a bunch of amps initially. It works flawlessly though. I probably went overkill on the size wire though.

    I don't know why I never thought of building a custom tailgate with spare tire mounts. My underbed hoist is broken and I'm tired of it just lying in the bed. Just FYI, you can connect the wiring in the a-pillar of the truck that go to the bed light to the reverse wires which will turn the bed light on with the reverse lights, or the reverse lights on with the bed light switch. This allows you to use the extra reverse lights to light up the back of the truck while connecting a trailer or whatever without having the truck in reverse. I did the same with my 07 RAM, has worked for years without an issue.

    It look kool! Great way to store tools and a battery!
    I would recommend a dc/dc charge relay/charger. New cars have a new type of alternator and new car have a "can-bus" system. If you just put a battery the system can go in "emergency" mode. So a dc/dc charger is better for new cars/trucks. I learn it the "hard" way.

    Cool idea on the battery "isolator". Not truly an isolator though as that relay may trigger with only 4 or 5 volts and allow your truck to try starting from the auxiliary battery and subsequently melting that small wire. Possibly even starting a fire or ruining the battery when it shorts out. A true battery isolator will only allow electric travel in one direction, that is how it prevents the drainage of other connected batteries. For just a few $ more you couldve gotten a true isolator and saved your self some work and gained a greater piece of mind.

      yeah, what you need is a normally closed plunger switch that opens the circuit when depressed. (Alarm panel Tamper switch or plunger door contact will work well) pass that through a double pole single throw relay and run power through the other side of the relay. break the hot leg of the light power and the grounds are all common. when the switch is depressed, it will flip the relay and trigger the power shunt. when it's open, the relay will send power to the light.

    AWESOME BUILD, Nate!
    With reference to off road vehicle wiring I'd like to pass along a tip someone shared with me many years ago. I suspect many here (and you) prefer to over-build, like me. As an extra layer of protection, try running any wiring that's outside the vehicle (especially UNDER), try running it through PVC pipe or PEX or even flexible conduit. I've found thiu\is to be invaluable This is especially helpful over long runs of wire.

    Nice Build. I installed a solar panel under my rack to provide power to extra gear via HD lockout sliders. And I would highly recommend just buying a good quality “used” home panel(that what I did) as like you my Taco is a second choice to my 1st Gen 4rnr. I have since switched racks. lol. You can usually find solar panels on Offer Up or Letgo from a solar reseller. Panels are rated for 25-30 life span but many people in SoCal swap out systems(upgrade panels as Tech improves) 5-7 years some times plus you get a high capacity 200w panel for 35-50 bucks. This panel are great for trucks as they are larger and bolt fright to the slide via drilling a few mounting holes along the box frame of the panel. Thanks for sharing!
