Ry owns my best solo in the universe: Taxes on the Farmer Feeds us All.
Named my best dog after him in 1975. (Cooder, of course.)
Saw him at the Riverboat in Toronto in March of1973, just after Into the Purple Valley was released. It was a born again moment.
I had paid attention to rumors and gossip back when I was a teenager in 1969 - about the Stones' weird album called "Jamming With Edward." Apparently or allegedly that was Ry somewhere in there on the album. There were even rumors (that surfaced later) that he might actually have become a Stone after Brian died. But we can all be eternally grateful that this didn't happen - if indeed, it was more than just a rumor.
He influenced my guitar picking (fingers, no pick) but I had uncommon good sense to never ever try imitating his slide. That was, and still is a most sacred thing.
I cannot imagine a musical world without Ry.
Thankfully, he never became a god. Mere mortality was always good enough for him. In the age and era of Pop and Rock gods, he remained true. Us fans always loved him for that.
I like that I have seen him up close and personal, almost intimate in small joints, but on big stages too. Not gigantic Stones' affairs, but real music halls. Even with the ensemble presented here.
I like the fact that Ry Cooder fans don't have a secret handshake.
They're too busy listening to even think of such a thing.

Cooder. That man, that name, the roots. There's only one other band who is at its core so balls to wall -- NRBQ. Q's 38th Anniversary CD is off the hook. Both Cooder and Q make me wanna get up, dance and shout for joy! Of course there's many others but I can think of no one today in the age of Epstein and COVID that invokes such high spirits musically. I mean, what country could have given birth to Cooder, Terry Adams, Kenny Burrell, the three King's of Blues, Johnny Wright, Charlie Parker, Jaco -- giants that led the world in the most human of terms? Europe gave mankind the classis. America gave the world the heartbeat.

    For Mr. Cooder:
Thank you for sharing so much of your incredible
music throughout the years. You have made
our world a bit nicer with your musical
contributions and your primo guitar playing.
May you continue with your best in the years
    to come.

Flaco Jimenez struts his stuff on accordion at just past 5:00. If you had tried to tell me when I was fifteen that someday I'd be digging Rock bands with accordion players, I'd have thought you were nuts ---- but I have seen Ry and Flaco play together, and the Richard Thompson band with John Kirkpatrick, and I have seen the light!

Tell me if Im wrong, but I think Ry Cooder was the origin of what is now called "Americana". As is seen in this video, he appreciated all American music including North , Middle, and South American music. He started doing this publicly as a very young man on The Old Grey Whistle Test. He has performed so many times publicly when it was really about preserving American music. He could be said to be an historian of American Pop ( whatever that means, and I don't have a better characterization, except for " Americana ". Take a look on YT " Little Sister", a cover of an early Elvis song ( how American can you get ? ) and you will see his passion along with his amazing glass eye. That's another story all together, about how he lost his eye. And tell me this , who else does " Jesus on the Mainline " ? He is a collector of songs.

You'd think Ry's vocal abilities would at least give him the edge over Duane, and I'm a huge Duane fan.

Absolutely! And stated by a dude that saw Duane free in the park in 1970...But, Ry already had lots of respect way before then. I still have the box a slide came in that mentions Ry's popularity (not Duane) that was The Reason This Slide Comes To You, etc.

  • @graylab2
    @graylab2 16 років тому +3

You are so right music is very subjective and personal. Each musicians needs to be respected for what they do, not who's best. Ry, Eric, SRV, Buddy Al Collins etc they're all good. Comparing one to another is like saying mashed potatoes are better than baked!!
