Saw Ry Cooder on his Get Rhythm tour June 1988 in Glasgow, probably still best concert I’ve ever seen, bonus was Steve Douglas on sax, hero of mine from Duane Eddy records, fantastic!!
I’m younger than Ry but basically same age group...boomers. Hearing and watching Ry perform this with his band and backers reminds me that age is a state of mind. I hope I’m still crushing it in my life now and when I’m Ry’s age. Also, I love the way he is happy to step aside and let the piano take the lead. No ego. Just fun and appreciation for the fun of doing something, anything well.
oh man, Ry is pure gold. Like all good things in life, his music is an acquired taste. Somehow it speaks to me so clearly. This man is so unique. I haven't met a anyone I didn't get along with that also likes Ry's music.
I'm glad I saw Ry in the 70's and 80's when he and his band was a powerful force of nature, HIGH energy and could blow the roof OFF the joint. That Catalyst show was beautiful. Thanks Ry. Thanks for being a cool guy and helping people see the right way and helping the workers.
Brilliant performance. Cooder still at the top of his game. This tune always makes me stomp my feet. And then we're even having a little bit of "Buena Vista Social Club" in the middle.
I seen ry at a old theatre in sydney and he broke one of his string on his guitar he pull it of kept playing the song and at the end of it he said it sounded ok and played the rest of the night with out it was incredible .The second time I saw ry he play with David Lindlry this was also a incredible night of music I will never forget
jimmymoosic I took my girls and my son in law. We came from Vancouver island. Ry Cooder is the best. Saw him the next night too. Awesome show. He’s the best
bob fossum we got there late and were sure we missed either Ry or Emmylou. Luckily not. I’ve listened to Ry since early 70s first time seeing him. He was awesome.
"Get Rhythm" was the "B" side of Johnny Cash's signature tune "I Walk The Line" in 1956. In Cash's bio he said he wrote it for Elvis Presley. Nice to see that Cash had an influence on Ry Cooder - two originals.
Wow, he’s still got it and them some. And he is still having fun! Did you see the other band members watching him? Even they were surprised at how great the song was...
" Bad" heavy sax. U know how to pick 'em Ryland. How sweet da sound. When it's a gruvin 'n grindin along. Much like a loaded freight well underway. Expert vocal in fore and aft. As usual
The commentary on the emotionally stifling conformity of schooling is something nearly every creative person complains of, we should be listening because it is the most creative people that most shape the best things about the world in which we live, short change the highly imaginative a proper education and you short change the whole world, it would be far better if the most imaginative inspired children were allowed to be such unimpeded, then everyone's creative potential is enhanced, the key to success in any field is emotional authenticity and the key to good schooling is in the satisfaction of authentic curiosity of which conformity is the opposite.
This one man rocks harder than 10,000 so-called rockers of the last 50 years at least, NRBQ perhaps the sole exemption. It is said Ry's cover was inspired by NRBQ's cover as they came out right around the same time. And Ry surely knows how to pick his musicians and singers, arrange them to el-perfecto perfection. Goddamn! This man makes me smile like few in history I can virtually count on one hand -- Nina Simone, King Curtis, Louis, Sun Ra, Monk, Cash, Jerry Lee, Elvis -- American made never to be seen again.
The NRBQ version came out in 1976 (NRBQ At Yankee Stadium) and Ry Cooder's was on the 1987 album Get Rhythm. Both are great! Get Rhythm was also the first record after the soundtrack to "Crossroads" to feature the Coodercaster, which took the sound of his guitar to a new level. Incredible tone!
That "voice way out in front" is so underused. Michael Jackson did it like that to everlasting effect, God bless him. It makes sense. But try finding a voice like Cash these days, boy!
Un dels meus músics preferits.. Gran guitarrista i impulsor de molta música.. MAMBO MINUENDO, ALI FARKA.., BUENA VISTA.. etc. Jo vaig tenir la sort de veure'l en directe 2 cops a la Terrassa Amèrica amb un grup excepcional LITTLE VILLAGE i un altre amb el Nick Love. Grans musics
Ry Cooder is the most under-appreciated guitarist ever. He's been a monster forever.
And WE including fans, musicians and critics have always appreciated him in the highest, so your term under-appreciated is completely wrong.
@@namcat53 Interesting, completely subjective viewpoint. And totally unnecessary - it was meant as a compliment.

I saw Ry Cooder twice during this tour. He is the best performer I’ve ever seen.
One of my favorite Cash tunes performed by one of America's great underappreciated musicians. Can't do wrong.

Cooder at his best after all those years.

Well HE`S got the rythm - so much to learn from this talented guy,
Thanks for recording this and sharing it. I have listened to anything I can of Ry Cooder since 1980's.
Ry Cooder is legend and phenomenal on his slider guitar..backup singers are terrific..great performance and entertainment..
Great artist, liked him for many years !!! Thanks Ry
This is the song that made me one of his all time fans!
Me too!
Ry Cooder is an American Treasure

😆😆😆😆 That’s ballsy!!
Ry is a Master Artist. It is fitting that he pays tribute to Johnny Cash. Ry just keeps getting better with age.
God I luv m...when I die I want to be on stage with Ry and have 25 guitars and 150 grand pianos to choose from. Luv u Ry!!!!
we were there!! He was soooo good.

Fantastic sound of a Basssax.
The keys were hot then some good old Boogie Woogie just the damn BEST....TURN IT UP MAN!
He has great voice quality and tone.
Magic!
Love the bass sax!!
What fun! Love the Latin jazz piano break. Ry sounding as good as ever! What is that guitar he’s playing? A “Coodercaster”? It’s wild.
Some don't know Ry Cooder is the guy playing the Guitar parts of Ralph Machio in Crossroads.
Get Cooder!

Sweet Ry 💙
Cell phones should detect shaky users and self destruct with lots of pyrotechnics.
Ryan is a national treasure. Thats from an Australian
Ryland, but we can dig it.
Too right bro love this version, and the clip, and the man...the stones thought so too
You know it’s a tough song to play when Ry Cooder says it’s hard…
That "voice way out in front" is so underused. Michael Jackson did it like that to everlasting effect, God bless him. It makes sense. But try finding a voice like Cash these days, boy!
Music starts around 2 minutes in
Geni de la guitarra

The camera work does little justice to this American icon!
It's recorded on a phone...lighten up!!!

Yep I get it. Now f.o.
Jeezus, learn to hold your camera steady! Brace it against something.
I really like Ry .. but like everything in life.. this song dodsnot suit him...
Checkout Chris Izaak's version..With Raul Malo and Chris's band..
Well, anything Raul sings is the best version!
Sorry. That sounds like a recording on the radio from the middle of nowhere.
Piano was so out of place.
Without Flaco it's not the real thing! To tell the truth: I love Ry Cooders voice and slide playing - but this is horrible!
My eyes hurt watching this mess...had to quit
