This is the soundtrack of my life from the 1970's to forever. Been drunk, lost, in and out of love, sleepin' in the backseat of my 55 buick, on the side of the road in the middle of the night, in the tank, and curled up inside my head, and this music has been a constant. If Ry had a thousand albums out, it still would never be enough. Screw golf and Disneyland, this, THIS, is heaven! Amen.
I think the Mr. Cooder and all of his very talented friend / band mates should receive the Nobel Peace Prize for the many contributions made as champions of so many of us, the "little" people. Their music tells us that all cultures really can unite in friendship and create something wonderful! Many of "Ry and Friends" have been doing this for over forty years. I think it is time all of these inspirational musicians to be recognized.
I am very thankful for class, grace and expertise of Mr. Ry. Combined with his lack of bs and refusal to join the Stones to simply do his gig with real musicians of heart...impossible to top. His music has made my life a lot better over the years.
Beautiful! ... It doesn't hurt that I was at this very concert in 1987 ... Ry Cooder, a guitar player's guitar player, with a keen ear for a great song.
How wonderful to have been at this concert. I came to Ru via Ali Farka Toure (sp?) and Buena Vista Social Club. I felt like I’d found a piece of heaven when I discovered M Broders videos of this concert!
This has got to include one of the all time classic guitar solos ever !! His slide work is impeccable and the lead out at the end Masterful !! Quality !!
Arguably the best rendition of this song (at least to my ears) by Mr Cooder , Flaco and band. Thank you for such a treat! so much emotion and equally fun to watch as it is to hear this song played.
Ry Cooder has turned me on to so many styles of music with his recordings through the years. More than a great player and band leader he has been a music historian!
I've been saying the same for years. Great of guitar as he is, when the music books are written, he may well be best known as a keeper of the flames; a musical historian. He is a treasure.
Ry is the man but that band are up there with him every step. Why doesn’t this happen anymore. Where is feeling where is soul now. Real instruments and real emotions..........
Ry Cooder`s work always has given me some kind of road movie vibe (maybe because of his work in Paris, Texas). I feel in heaven when I listen his music. He made timeless masterpieces.
Absolutely agreed , I saw him do it in London around '81 ish. He made that guitar bleed with emotion. I will never hear anything like it again. From another planet, must be .
Ry Cooder, the slider of guitar playing and singer on stage is a legend of it all..rhythem and melody is awesome..so many fans all over the world..backup singers are terrific and band is great..music flows out to all and with the guitar slider the music at times gently weeps for all..and vision that ..it's like we're on this journey and just grazing along the way..slowly returning..a pleasant sound that makes me gently weep to the sound of going out to the wind and its streaming along on its special time zone..never forgotten
What can I say. The most brilliant slide guitarist of all time. And what an emotional message. Just love the look on the guy's face playing the accordion. He knew as we do that he was playing with the master. Thank you Ry Cooder for being you.
WOW What a brilliant clip of Ry & a bunch of superb musicians & the wonderful vocal quartet. Ry just makes that guitar sing so pretty. From a 72yo Aussie fan.

That solo is just gorgeous. It's so in the moment. He is stretching to the point of making glorious mistakes. Then there's that shot of his face, and you see he's just in another world. And his rythm guitar on this is great, not to mention the rest of the band.

Thanks for sharing this. I have only seen Ry Cooder play live once. That was in Manchester, England back in 1995 when he played with David Lindley. I saw David Lindley again in 2003 when he played a concert with Wally Ingram in Bielefeld, Germany. Ry's music is brilliant. These guys played my dad's Mayfair Theater in Santa Monica that summer on a warmup before the tour - just me and my buddy and the crew - one of the best shows I ever saw - Harry Dean Stanton sang a couple of solos

Artistic excellence, comes in to maturity at different times to a musician, guitarists, piano players, and compoesers, all have a legacy of similar path and substance. When its great, its very simple to understand, and when its hidden from sight, only to be heard without face or knowledge, it holds its own merit unattached to popularity or conventional demographics. Meaning that, it is great because it is timeless.
Being a musician who, like all musicians, want the knowledge, the will and the artistry to present to the world music that will move the spirit in kind as all great the talent in the world does not fulfill a great moment in music. that it can be first felt by the heart of the one, to become the light of the many. merl haggard 195 something......let country be the beacon and blues be the soul, and rock be the foundation ....elvis and in the most important statement that comes to mind. let me become we become us that we might enjoy a night of great music.
no worries, it takes everybody a while to grasp the intent. In light of that fact, I m saying that the value of good musicians and great musicians are based upon the quality of the music over years...good music is good in its time, great music has a way of sounding very good no matter when it was originated by the musicians ......to me there are a double hand full of musicians that I hold as timeless in the music they created, its not about one instrument, or one singer, although to me there are few male singers that hold timeless in their voice, but there are more than 5 female artists that sing in a timeless manner. I think this is more easily applied to the influence of the music. Where as many will not hold the same music as I do, but many will say that there are styles and periods of music that are better suited to the time period as a representation of the great music of that decade or, period of popular styles. Did that offer a different take on the subject.
Ry Cooder is such a legend of all sorts of songs and a solo artist ..A slider guitar on strings that thread out to the world and sound soo good..a great band..the rhythem is superb and melody is terrific ..a great solo voice on stage..performance is fantastic and entertainment is special with all the musicians on stage ..The sound leaves you wanting more and relaxing and enjoyable..
Back again in the middle of the Corona virus,in lovely Melbourne,Australia. GOD--Ry is so,so,BLOODY BRILLIANT & the band is superb. From a 77yo Aussie fan. Ry will be fondly remembered forever.

That guitar is more human than some people I know. Thanks, Mr. Cooder.
Interesting comment. I agree with it.
Beethoven called the guitar "the little orchestra."
@@cityzen2717 You made that up.

Great comment.
The sad thing about this song is its constant relevance.
Heart-felt singing from Mr Cooder.

Meaning that, it is great because it is timeless.
+JED TAYLOR A very wise comment, Sir.
