Ry Cooder plays 100% in the pocket. What good is playing 1000 notes a minute if you don't play with this kind of deep commitment to the music? I love his guitar part in this song. It is very sophisticated and only a real, seasoned musician could craft such an interesting intro, perfect accompaniment and solo so well. He pays this old song such respect with his approach to it. I just love it. I've watched and listened to it 100s of times. The vocals and the mix in this live performance are excellent especially since it was done over 30 years ago.
I agree - after Steve Vai had sat down to listen to Ry do a run through of a tune for 'Crossroads', he had this to say "I was slapped in the face when I played with Ry Cooder. He truly is a living, breathing master. ... it was a personal and artistic experience I wouldn't trade for anything. Truly a once -in-a-lifetime experience." Respect to you Mr Vai.
Bang on the mark there Mr Joey. Likewise I’ve listened to it 100’s of times and even transcribed the guitar part to try and play it but it’s pure class. All the best from Scotland 👍
I'm feeling these songs so close and helpful in these days. And this full concert and single songs are the present I'm sending for Christmas to the people I care the most.
I am an old man who has listened to this tune since I first heard Sam Cooke sing it ! This is the best rendition of this tune ever played in my opinion ! Pure magic , just have to say vocals are fantastic , but Ry Cooder brings out the magic in it !
The opening licks Ry plays are just so tasty. Nothing flashy, nothing wasted - just subtle note and phrasing changes that evoke a great mood for the song that follows. The boy can play.
Probably one of the best performances outside of Sam Cooke. I love the slow beat. It's good when a performer can make a song his own and separate himself from the original.
I can tell you as someone who was there, this was the show to be at. We were ready, word was spread by phone and the vibe was very cool and appreciative. I had seen many shows where this took place, but this one was highly anticipated. The Catalyst, a former bowling alley, was NOT our favorite place to see anyone, it actually sucked, but we put up with it. Ry and that band transcended all of that and we all had a wonderful time. Thanks Ry and band. Thanks for the film crew and the upload of this video. What a night. Those were the days. We were lucky.
I was there, too! I actually loved the Catalyst - saw so many great acts there. Ray Charles, Leon Russel, the Doobies, Toots and the Maytals - it just goes on and on...
Ry Cooder's beautifully placed - and paced - guitar, Flaco Jiminez' s accordion and the vocals of Bobby King... a great band in action putting a standard on another level
Nice touch also with Flaco Jiminez on accordian. What a collection of musicians! Ry Cooder has been a great presence on the music scene for decades. Truly an inspiration for what a human being can do.
I saw Ry with Flaco 10 years earlier at Princeton University's Richardson Hall with Gaby Pahuinini (sp) for the Chicken Skin tour. The boys were there backing him up. What a great night. I live in the shadow of NYC, so my Cooder shows were always on the East coast, and there were many, including the Carnegie shows - 'Jazz' and 'Buena Vista'. It's been a great life.
@@thaddeusk4230 That's a pretty great series of shows. Gabby Pahinui live - that's one to live for. I lived in Hawaii for a couple of years, and became aware of his music then. He was gone by the time I got there, but I at least have a cassette tape. His music is part of the soundtrack for the movie "The Descendents," and is on UA-cam. Like Ry Cooder, he went deep. The same for the Buena Vista Social Club. Those were times of an embarrassment of riches.
Wow ! I've always loved Ry Cooder. Haven't listened to him in a while. Now I know what I've been missing. He is obviously an extremely talented musician, but his real draw is in the fact that his soul drips from him when he plays! Also, his ability to bring different cultures together to share in the experience of playing beautiful music shows his true humanity. A great human being and great musician !

Saw Ry and the gang perform this in Brighton, UK in the 70's. This track was the evening finale and was one of the most perfect live performances I have ever seen. Just incredible.
Ry is still going strong. What he did with Buena Vista Social Club was pure genus. One of the real greats, wish I hadn't slept through the seventies & eighties.
I must say whenever I see Ry Cooder throwing his head back - like this passion between him and his guitar becomes like a holy icon -spiritually connected. :)

spent two months of my life with Bobby and Terry - 1975 - did an east coast musical tour - and we had Jewel Akens with us - he sang "let me tell you bout the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees " !!! it was a the experience of a lifetime . . . .
Love this song, and I have just found this live video! I was looking through Ry Cooder playlist, and this appeared, with the mighty Bobby King on lead vocals. (I saw him with Bruce Springsteen live ) I do think that Sam Cook would really love this version x
Love Ry Cooder been listening to him since his first album, yeah I"m that old lol Been reminiscing. A fantasy I have always had was to be a back up singer for Ry or Frank Zappa but not the right shade lol Never saw RY But saw Frank Zappa over 15 times lol those are the one I remember but fading lol I loved to watch him Frank conduct he was amazing and so were his players... Ry too amazing he has a channel on youtube , a lot of the older musicians so still get to hear then. ;) thank you Holly Dee
The title of the song has a beautiful riing to it. Love Bobby's sweet, satisfying rendition & with the Ry treatment, makes this an unforgettable cover, amazingly breathtaking. Every band member in sync, enjoy the song : ) 🤎🤎🤠🌤🙏🏻
From the opening note, Ry is enraptured, and understands, as few musicians do, that he is in service to the greatness of Sam Cooke and this song. So does Bobby. Quel hommage!
It has been hidden in plain sight. My parents always had music playing, and so do I. My children have explored all of the collection of vinyl in my hoard. I still would rather play a whole album than just cherry pick tunes. Currently it is "Who's next" @33 1/3 RPM.
If this doesn't bring tears to your eyes, what will?! My oh my, what a great song, and what great peformers...could listen to this forever. Thanks for sharing, mbroders.
Nothing in this world like great live music. That feedback loop with the audience and the hive mind of the band. Very hard to make that happen in a studio. PLUS WHICH: Every note from every musician is perfectly in tune. As if it were a studio recording. Fine fine musicians.
I watched this 4 times in immediate succession and I don’t believe I’m done yet. Every time I hear something that I want to pay more attention to the next time.
Just wonderful...! Cooder and all musicians here themselves working indeed on the Chain... That is nerve-breaking music, all from the heart. God Bless !
A real Sam Cooke classic, beautifully covered. This song came to Sam in his early years whilst travelling, when he stopped to hand out some cigarettes to those working on a chain gang. Inspiration often comes from reality.
This was recorded at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, .CA in my old hood. If I told you all the World Class acts that played here you would not believe me. I think the place held a capacity of 500 people or so. Due to its proximity to San Francisco and that it had that relaxed beach town vibe, who wouldn't want to play there?
I love watching Ry move. He's unlike any other performer I've seen in this regard. He BECOMES the rhythm. Of all the videos he's most in his body on this one. Sure love Ry.
this is fantastic-i saw Ry in london in 1981 and one of the highlights was Bobby King sin ging this as an encore -a truly magnificence collection of performers
Well music doesn´t get any better than this... I´m going home to.. see heaven if they have this song is alive played.. Sam Cook captured a moment - wrote a song and Ry Cooder and his band Rythm Aces - with Bobby King on vocals - what a healing exeperience
Bobby King, what a set of pipes! What a band! What luscious, dirty guitar playing by one of the all-time greats! This is rock 'n roll (or R & B if you will, they're kissing cousins) the way God intended.
This great song was written and recorded by Sam Cooke and released as a single in 1960, reaching #2 in the United States pop and R&B charts, and #9 in the UK that year. Reportedly, this song was inspired after a chance meeting with an actual chain-gang of prisoners on a highway, seen while Sam was on tour. According to legend, Cooke and his brother Charles felt sorry for the men and gave them several cartons of cigarettes.
I listen to this everyday - and sing along with them, love this rendition of this classic Sam Cooke tune. Just beautiful. These are truly awesome artists, every one of them. Wonder if there would be a chance of Ry getting together with them again.
