Humour in Dragon Age: Origins VS Dragon Age: The Veilguard

- Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the newest release from Bioware and as I was playing it and going back and forth with Dragon Age: Origins. I noticed that the humor in the new game is much more toned down compared to the old one, Alistair in Dragon Age: Origins is comedy gold and the cutscenes are very much funny even today, but let me know what do you think; which one of these games is actually funnier?
My favourite one is where you recruit the dog and Morrigan says that Alistair is still the dumbest one in the party
Alistair is adorable but also so fun to bully 😂
"Swooping is bad"
you just know
@@Mr-dead Can't believe I still remember that line, even though I have no context for it anymore.
@@Au_Ra804 He wasn’t exactly a victim either; sometimes he knew how to press where it hurt the most, especially when it came to Morrigan.🙃
Bruh, these characters are talking like they’re being held hostage, just awkward small talk like they’re late for the bus or something 🤣
More like they are in preschool. Not grown adults. " I wanna take a nap" And the delivery doesnt help.
And we're being held hostage as we're forced to listen to them...
By the way did you know that Bellara likes to ramble? She likes to ramble so much that she mentions it three times in a row about how much she rambles... BOY, WHAT AN INTERESTING AND DEEP CHARACTER.
Writer with a gun: "Now say this and make quirky voice. QUIRKIER! You wanna your brain spilled on floor BTCH!"
HR approved dialogues!
IGN: 9/10
"Hey Guys, My Name Is Rook And You're Watching Disney Channel" Ahh Game 🤣🤣🤣
You need to sacrifice the ... the ... the rook!!!
Lmao Disney Channel had better writing and dialogue than this steaming pile of garbage 😂
@@radiantnakashimawell old Disney lol
Seriously why does the background sounds make it sound like they are in some fairy tail?
And the she-goblins in BG3 are better looking then the elfs on this game.
I...really have to apologize to Hawke, cause even if he had the same "personality wheel" he was by FAR more expressive and interesting than whatever Veilguard's got going on.
Hawke's sarcastic replies were at the very least funnier than this... Thing.
DAII may as well be King Lear or Hamlet compared to what's on offer in Veilguard.
I really miss funny hawk. The humor in that game was something else. I feel like when i choose the humor wheel on valeguard i sounds like what would be the normal affirmative answer
Sarcastic Hawke was best Hawke.
At least Hawke could kill Anders. Imagine this scene in Veilguard. Wait. In Veilguard Anders wouldn't have blown the church. He'd confess to Hawke, Hawke would have talk to him like the dude was a 12 years old, gave him lolipop and accompany him to the session of group therapy where they would have learned importance of pronouncing. All would live hapilly ever after; mages, Demons and Templars would hold hands and sing Koombyah. And BioWere would be done and over with forever. Omg the times we live in...
I really miss when games weren't afraid to have an edge.
3 words = Baldurs Gate 3
Pathfinder wrath of the righteous has funny dialogue too. Honestly this game is an exception.
@@kinomanssky Still developed by pink haired deviants, the only difference is in the case of bg3 they were free to write all their diss gusting fetishes into the game and here they were not.

People hate on DA2 but Hawke's (and Varric's) sarcasm is LIGHTYEARS ahead of whatever tf Veilguard's """humor""" is
And Isabella roasts you mercilessly. Bioware has always had a lot of camp, but it was balanced by a sense of sincerity. This is *only* Millennial Twitter snark. It’s the worst game I think I’ve ever seen relative to budget and tools.
No kidding... Dragon Age 2 is even better than this in all other regards too.
TBH, never understood the DA2 hate.
Story-and dialogue-wise actually well done.
@@shyviking same
@@shyviking it's because of more linear story and recycled maps. I also had a problem with that but great characters and voice acting made me appreciate this game
I really enjoyed Alistair as a companion, dude was a real bro.
And I enjoyed bullying and breaking him. Both variants were possible and had their consequences. Great game.

@@victorb5 Oh, really???

It's a common crutch for bad writers to get quippy and sarcastic because actual sincerity runs the risk of the audience rejecting something you've put your heart and soul into. But if the characters aren't invested in what's happening, why should the audience?
Funny that as a reader/player I found these veilguard characters childish and rude.
Agreed, I'm getting MCU dialogue vibes from this.
You guys never played dragon age games. This dip is purposely choosing the lamest response which is always quippy and lame
I didn't realize that was a crutch bad writers used. Thanks for sharing.
@@tonybryk3312 Hush, the adults are busy talking. Don't interrupt little Jimmy.
Veilguard characters fell out of the cringe tree and snapped every branch on the way down.
They must have kept their mouth open all the while, they absorbed so much cringe they became the cringe.
--snapped-- hit*
Then, they climbed back up for another round
To be honest, I don't find any of the Origins dialog in this video funny either. The only difference is that it's not cringe, but I'm watching it without any reaction.
I've never played a single BioWare game. I've never felt any attraction towards any of them. It used to be such a beloved studio, but I never understood why. I want to try the Mass Effect remaster one day, but I'm not optimistic.
This. The dialogue is so forced and the VA clearly have no range or care. I swear they were held hostage in the studio and told to read the lines or else they’d never see their loved ones ever again
There is literally no choice but to agree with the script in this game LMAO
Them selling the game:
"If you thought we didn't give a shit about your previous choices *before* , just wait until you play *this* game!"
>Game released where you can make your own choices and paths
>Look inside
>Forced to be compliant with whatever side the devs want you on
Yeah I really wanted a Persona 3 dialogue option, “I don’t care.” for 90% of this crap. I remember when we used to be able to punch Solas, kill Leliana, and betray or piss off everyone in the party. Now, if I want to play, I am forced to agree with and comply with all the DEI BS that I would never comply with IRL. If I can’t chose to be an asshole, then there really isn’t choices.
@@alexsmith6482 I was afraid that it will be the case because of the gameplay that they showed us. There Rook was shadow dragon but that added one line "City is big i dont know all of it" and scout did her job like she would do with every other background and later we have "choice" if we want to talk or stop solas and only difference is approval because Varrick goes to talk no matter what. Even in their clip (and they could chose any) they showed us nah, choices are boring here is God of War story and mechanics that are pretending to be Dragon Age
Disagreeing is never an option.

Noticed that time ago. It's right there. How can you not notice it?
Scaled up to avengers end game, then it hit terminal mass, and no movie or show could be taken serious because it was just jokes appealing to the lowest denominator.
It's so badly done it ain't humour. Can make almost anything work if the necessary writing quality is there. And understand balance, execution.

The difference between games that address political subjects like Cyberpunk, DA Origins, Disco Elysium and both Red Dead games is that the writers of these games ask questions and trust the players to come with their own answers and conclusions while on the other hand the Veilguard writers are just telling the players what to think and it feels more like propaganda than art. I honestly hope the writers of this game get blacklisted from the entertainment industry but knowing the industry they'll probably end up being "journalists" at IGN or Kotaku.
The trick is to address the underlying philosophy, partisan politics is only surface level.
You've got it the other way around. One of the troons working on this game was a urnalist from Kotaku. The one who tried cancelling Nintendo because he thought he heard the word r3-t4rt3d in the smash bros persona 5 music. Turned out it was the word "retort." The pipeline goes from activist urnalist to game "writer." Going back to urnalist would be a downgrade for them. Also the director was a troon as well, so he can only fail upwards in modern times.
It IS propaganda!
@zenna5062 make no mistake corporations don't care about troons or their ideas. They care only about profit. If this fails and it most likely will, then the investors will stop letting these idiots use games as a tool to spread their ideologies.
@Dr.Yakub22 Disney investors say hi.
I just love how Dragon Age went from a gritty dark fantasy into bog standard "we have D&D at home" generic fantasy in every goddamn way.

These writers grew up on early 2000s Disney Channel shows, Family Guy and Marvel. Naturally they suck ass. They think that quips and meta humor are peak writing. Man, the fall of bioware needs to be studied. From amazing classics lile KOTOR, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, Mass Effect! To s**t like Andromeda, and now this? Heartbreaking 😢
Original devs left.
Its just a zombie studio.
That's what happens when EA buys a studio, forces them to rush games to cash in on trends, compromises quality and writing, letting most of the original talent leave and hiring incompetent activists in their place. Bioware is now a skinned face of what it once was, worn by something sick, twisted and entirely different underneath it.
Doesn't need it. It's very simple. Bioware got bought up by EA and will end up like Bullfrog, Westwood, etc., in the EA game studio graveyard.
It's not hard to understand: Almost nobody at Bioware today was there when they were pumping out golden age classics. It's an entirely different studio beneath the name.
Easy. The games we talk about were made over 15 years ago. People involved are long gone.

Youre jaded by the top 0.001% of games that sold more than that.
@@deathandrebirth-y8x In fairness, for many years games in general didn't sell that many copies all things considered. That same year Origins came out, CoD Modern Warfare 2, generally considered a contender for the best Call of Duty game, and being a game that was in an already insanely popular series that appealed to a broad audience, only sold about 12 mil copies.
It is niche comparatively for sure, but it was still pretty hefty sales for the time period. While the number of sales for games in more recent years is often kept a lot more vague by companies, the number of people buying games in general is significantly higher now than it was a decade ago. Hogwarts Legacy for example, which came out last year, is estimated to have sold about 24 million copies, which is more than Wii Sports sold during its release year, (coincidentally the same year as DA:O), which sold about 20mil that year, and the Wii was considered an un-precedented worldwide phenomenon for how many people were buying it.
Numbers without context only tell half the story, and it's much easier for even bad games to hit high numbers now than well received games could hit 10+ years ago.

I'm currently replaying Origins, and man, Alistair has me constantly smiling, and even when one of his jokes don't land, they're the kind of bad you still laugh at for being so horrible instead of cringe. Alistair has charm. His bad jokes make him MORE charming.
The dialogue between Morrigan and Alistair was just amazing. It was like watching a stand-up comedy.
What I find hilarious is the Asian and Black elves. Skin color is not just a paint job where you go to the shop and magically become something else. Melanin is directly correlated with the position the equator and the necessity to deal with heat. The elves have, randomly, a multicultural society despite there not being any evidence of this just to be exactly like California. If there were any elves like this, they would have eventually bred to a more neutral and consistent 'color' anyways.
But who cares about reality, we need to depict diversity without any reason.
Skin color doesn't dictate race/breed. It's your ancient ancestral mix. G25 PCA visualizes this reality. We will be forced to redefine race in order to describe this reality. It turns out we're all special and we can't replace each other like cogs in a machine.
Turns out there's a lot of different breeds and sub-breeds of people. The Asian continent alone has quite a few.
It's not the white race, it's the European race, and there's sub-races too. And the Levantines (Lebanese, Israelis, some Palestinians) are a (1st) cousin race to the European people. They both generally share around 50% Neolithic Anatolian farmer ancestry. Caucasus people are also a (1st) cousin race) to Europeans.
So a brown Lebanese of a Christian background is genetically closer to a pale Englishman than a brown indian.
You can hear the writers self inserting trough these characters i swear
Have you ever licked a lamppost in Winter?
Holy fucking hell. If you showed me just that clip from 1:03, even with a hundred guesses I'd never have pegged it as a Dragon Age game. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so pathetically sad.

@markkoetsier6475 I literally don't care about the skin color. The standard fantasy background usually have elves populating all parts of the world and adapting to the natural environment (hence the different skin colors).
What I'm talking about is the laziness of giving the character the bone structure of the actress w/ no explanation of why there's suddenly elves mimicking eastern Asian ethnicities. She's literally the first in hundreds/thousands of NPCs we've encountered in the franchise thus far. It's ultimately VO work. The character doesn't have to look like the actor.
I get she very likely did mocap/had her face scanned, too, which is usual in game production, but my point still stands about the companions in this game: they did clipboard diversity to check boxes.
Just no. The south of Thedas is colder. Koncari Wilds turn into a frozen wasteland.@@markkoetsier6475
the sanitization and sterilization of games is so frustrating
I still remember the cinematic of the Battle at ostagar how heartbreaking the lorgain betrayal was even dragon age 2 had that incredible moment of tragedy with hawks mom, i cant even picture dragon age shitguard doing anything close to that and even if they tried to would ruin it with superficial marvel humor
Alastair was hilarious in Origins. “Swooping is bad” is my favorite.
"Have you ever licked a lamp post in winter?"
1:50 laughing sfx
I laughed so hard when that face showed up
@@gustavohc18 this rook's face is already a walking joke 😂
The humour in dragon age origins and dragon age 2 were top tier
“Your glibness does you no credit!”
