Just had a look at Steam charts and there's 4300 people playing Half Life 2 right now; over 3000 are playing Eve Online and that game only gets going once you've dropped 100 hours into it. That's simultaneously sad and hilarious that a 20 year old game has a higher player count than a new AAA title.
I know I'll get a ton of hate, but I actually quite enjoyed DD2. The game run rough at first, I only play on a 3070 + Ryzen 5 5600X, but now it's perfectly fine for me. It's probably my most played game this year, outside of retro gaming.

Developers nowdays have tools that can do everything for them without special effort from them. This is an effect. Difference when you have do everything manually vs automatically
Sure, there are tools like Unreal Engine 5 that may seem easy to use on the surface, but when you look at all the problems with it and what it takes to fix them (thinking in particular about the known asset streaming issues), it can become a pretty monumental amount of work. And if devs are writing an engine from scratch, modern graphics APIs like Vulkan and DX12 are so much more verbose than legacy ones like DX11 and OpenGL that it can take 2-5 times the amount of code just to get something rendered to a window because there are so many more features and knobs to tune in newer hardware.
