After a year of straight up research that didnt bear fruit, within literally 5 minutes, I genuinely started to get an idea on how to actually mix, what the hell thanks man.
Seriously the best vocal instructional content in UA-cam. There are tons of vocal teachers in UA-cam who just show you some exercises and never tell you how you should feel etc... while singing. This is invaluable.
The most amazing thing about studying vocals is discovering how complex it actually is and how certain sounds are made a different way than you would think. Thank you for all this content. It gives me the hope I need to keep practicing.
Brother, I'm from the Philippines and I can't afford to have voice lessons like this but because of watching your videos, I can now sing Steve Perry songs. I realize that singing high notes is not about pushing too hard but focusing on singing in a mixed placement and with proper support. Thank you, brother.
this was enlightening, straightforward and also kinda funny. the fact that you didn't stop yourself from cracking as much as you did, while other coaches I've seen feel too embarrassed to do so, actually really helped to understand the point you were making. that final take of you explaining the different placements in your singing was a lesson on its own. thank you for this!
😭😭😭 OMG!!! I couldn't understand why I sometimes I would crack when I added more compression and sometimes it flowed so easily. I wasn't putting my placement back far enough!! THANK YOU!!! Dude, you are EASILY the BEST vocal coach on UA-cam (and I've watched SOOOO many of them)!!
Chris, I never comment on videos, but this is next level content. I've watched so many videos on mix and nothing explains it quite like this. Especially that end example where you explain the subtle differences while moving back and forth through the resonances while in your DAW. In my own testing, I've also noticed pulling the crease of the mouth back toward the ears seemed to help get to what I felt was mix and this video really reinforced that. Thanks so much!
I love singing but ive always struggled to find out what was going wrong. Thanks to you i finally found the way and if one day I achieve my dream in singing, its all thanks to you, man
@Chris Liepe, thank you. This is phenomenal, but not just for knowing if you're in mixed voice, but also, for helping understand when it's better to BE in mixed voice, for certain songs. I noticed when I tried notes in mixed (the way you explained it, being conscious of resonance and placement in the back of the face) I was able to sing without aggravating my throat and sound stronger. So thank you for helping me with my technique as well as awareness, I'm incredibly grateful for what you do and will keep tuning in!
Thanks, that fixed an issue i have been having. I was avoiding my upper range post-transition, but was mezzo-descant before and I've been back training vocal for about 18 months, performed two local proam musicals this year and have just started working on opera and a few days ago managed to start accessing falsetto, which brought me to your content. I'm baritone with a really nice bass end but I'm working hard on the higher end, and it's not easy. I appreciate your videos, they communicate in a way i can follow ❤
Oh my God chris! This was HANDS DOWN the BEST instructional video I've ever watched. I've been trying for over a DECADE to figure it out. This video just finally made it all click! I can't thank you enough
Thanks brother! I've been experimenting with mixed voice and it's making more sense to me now. I work with singers all the time in my studio as well and now I'm able to communicate better with the vocal techniques I've learned from you! Rock and roll!!
This is a revelation!! Many thanks Chris! This is pure gold! The key I learned from this video: pick a note you can sing in chest and head: in my case the D4. then move it back or forward! Many thanks again!
Exact same thing here. The mechanics of this stage is both frustrating and interesting. There is no visual blueprint or tolerance. I think I might have found it a few times recently. Gotta dial it in.
Perfect timing. So weird, I was reading something about register flips today and was wondering how people do that, then you released this video. Thank you.
I'm too much of a novice for this to be totally useful to me, but a sincere thank you for making weird unpretty noises. I don't (and will never have) the range you do, but it helped me understand the instrument much better.
You know there are really not much content out there in this context wants your to really get it, you are very genuine and not making anything mysterious! Appreciated!
Great video, this and a previous one have helped me understand the feeling of mixed voice singing and now I can comfortably hit a whole bunch of songs I couldn't get before. The placement trick is fantastic, rather than going up the face into head, go backwards into the mix. I understand why Axl rose and Brian Johnson sang like they did now. Just got to try and understand what belting is now. Thanks again!
Because of you sir, I finally unlocked my mixed voice but the thing is that I can't still control it. Coincidentally, I found this notification on my phone while I'm thinking if I'm really mixing my voice or not. Thank you sir!
Great singing in the beginning. Great and helpful tips for checking if you are in mixed voice, along with the way you explain and demonstrate it so well.
Resonance occurs throughout the vocal tract in all types of vocal emission. What goes backwards or forwards is the sensation of vibration, not the resonance. We must distinguish between resonance and vibration sensations, they are two different things, but almost no singing teacher seems to understand this.
Jesus Christ this video is an epiphany for me (not the first one you’ve given me) a few days ago I was singing with my noise cancelling headphones in & I noticed it was feeling a lot better than it normally would. I thought maybe it was just cus I couldn’t hear myself but sure enough when I took the headphones out I felt something tense up and I couldn’t figure it out. I’ve always associated the thinness of mix voice with forward placement but now I realize that feeling of ease & freedom I was getting was because I was using a more open and further back placement 🤯 u are seriously the only reason I am even a little competent with singing man thank you
Chris, this was sooooooooo helpful. I loved your demonstrations of going back and forth with placement and then the use of the DAW. Really really helpful. I've been struggling with building those muscles and you helped me feel the difference. WOOOOOO! Thanks
YES!!!! Finally a method that ACTUALLY works! I had this doubt for months, even couple years maybe, and now I can be 100% sure it's the right path to develop. It's super tough for me to make the mix sound decent, or chestier. Even though you already have some great videos on this, I'd love to have the topic revisited in case you have any new tips and tricks for it! Thanks as always! You're the best. :)
Either i just discovered head voice or mixed voice, idk but i learned something. I noticed the more support i add, the more raspy i sound, not voice breaks, just rasp, grit
Its videos like this that really help to shed the light on figuring these techniques out. I've been struggling with my mixed voice for a long time and this is a huge help! When you move the placement back for the mixed notes are you making sure your soft pallette is raised or in any particular placement as well or just sort of letting things naturally fall into place?
Thank you for your excellent teaching style and hard work! Would you ever consider doing a video on the vocal style of Justin Hawkins' from The Darkness?
This seems to be helpful, especially since I've really been working on really deliberately practicing proper diaphragm support recently in general. Did clue me in as to why my current attempts to practice support in the higher notes were failing (and leaving my voice sore), as my voice was cracking, and thus head voice (and thus my throat was still tense)
Wasn't sure what to expect, but this was a pretty good video. You could even rename it how to find your mix voice, which everyone looks for, and it is still just as good a video with that title
Right :) !! I actually have another video with that exact title already haha... Need to keep the angles coming to keep it fresh! Here's that video: ua-cam.com/video/PWILJG2wh5Q/v-deo.html

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SIMPLIFYING THIS!!! I own your course My Musical Voice and it's great. What would make it amazing is if you added an index to it. For example Support, Head Voice, Chest voice section etc instead of funny noises etc Just an idea Chris Thanks again :)
Thanks Kevin! It's funny... I intentionally shy away from those labels like "head, chest etc..." because I want people to discover or rediscover in new ways, how to internalize and manipulate resonances and other sensations. As soon as we start labeling things in our mind, we limit what we can experience. THIS is why I kinda have a 'otherworldly' vocab in the course as well as many of my videos here on UA-cam. This makes more and more sense the deeper you go with me as your coach :) !!
thank you very much, Chris! your videos have been helping me a lot wih my own songs. have you ever heard of Grouplove? I find their vocals extremely interesting and I'm sure there's a lot to learn from them for your subscribers!
