One of my favorite Kirk solos. Watching him create it on the movie a year and a half in the life of Metallica is one of my favorite f you stories. You should watch the movie man it’s incredible. It’s about making the black album. The production on this album is second to none. You can thank bob rock for that. He’s a genius. He also produced Motley Crue’s dr feel good
Metallica have been accused of selling out more than anyone else. The next two albums after this - Load and ReLoad - got those same accusations because of the drastic sound change, despite the fact that really selling out would mean putting out Black Album 2.
the lyrics on this song are brilliant. I was lucky enough to attend Metallica's Back tour, and the acoustics, vocals and emotions were even more powerful live. What a ride!
@GracieUnderFire Yep, those were good times! I was a teenager when this album came out. I'll never forget driving around in my old beater car with the aftermarket stereo blasting this album (on cassette) "dragging main" with my friends, and loving every moment of this beautiful life! The 80's and 90's were magic!
@GracieUnderFireyou're 💯 correct! I was 26 yrs old when this dropped! I'd just seen the AJFA tour so obviously it was time again for Metallica! They're like fine red wine...gets better every year!! Death Magnetic, Hardwired to self-destruct, Load n Re-Load there's a lot to hear still. Including 3 S&M concerts with three Symphony concerts! Versatility is endless!

When they sold out, it was only at the Medicine Square, Gardens. It’s just that bands get more talented as they play. They mastered their skills and made real music. That’s all it is. they didn’t sell out. They just got good :-)
I cried watching you cry! That is a reaction!!!!!! I do a lot of volunteer work with displaced youth. And music therapy is the best therapy. It doesn't matter how old they are, they know what the song means
Some people just can't adapt to change. When this first came out, for many fans it felt the same as if Eminem turned country. But being older now and more seasoned musically, it's a solidly written, performed and produced album.
This is one of my personal favourite Metallica songs. I think it's partly the contrast between the softer and harder parts, and also I like the message. "Don't let other people dictate who you should be"
The black album is a masterpiece. The reason why people are mixed on it is because it was a bit of a different sound for Metallica. Also imo their first 4 albums over a 5 year period is the greatest 5 year stretch in music history. It's a bit hard to live up to that.
You're so right about the black album. The cliché about them selling out is wank. It's stylistically different to its predecessors, sure, but it's a genuine masterpiece
the black album to me was there last best album, after that is when i thought man what happened to them lol its like a light switch just shut off in them since then
The unforgiven is one of my favourite Metallica songs. The black album is fire 🔥 bro. One of the best sound production on an album. As you say you can hear how deep the equipment hits mate. Loving your journey molly. Taking my daughter to her first gig tomorrow over in Portsmouth. You keep well bro 😎
After the black album is Load and that album is amazing! People shit on it just like the black album and honestly those people are just butt hurt fans. The black album and Load are amazing!! Definitely not 80’s Metallica but that’s cuz they changed their producer and he moved their career into the stratosphere!
Still remember the first time i listened to this album. Front to back it's mind-blowing. Dont stop listening to Metallica fella. Load 1996 Reload 1997 St Anger 2003 Death Magnetic 2008 Hardwired 2016 and 72 Seasons 2023 all have incredible music on them. Keep on enjoying the Metallica journey
Thank you! I hadn't heard this in FAR TOO LONG!! I remember when The Black Album released -- I had a TR6 red convertible and that's ALL I jamed for months!! OMG ❤🤘
People that dislike the Black album are mainly doing so for reasons other than how good the songs are. Amazing album. Personally I’m not into anything they released after this album wise but this was the peak of a great run of albums. Only natural that their sound would become this, they are artists, they change and progress…
You don't deserve to do another Metallica vid bro, you have that right. It's your fkng channel not ours, not theirs...they can go watch something else, but they won't cause hatters gotta hate - screw them! Nice reaction!
The Black Album really was a lightning in a jar moment. BUT it was such a departure from what came before it was jarring for some of the fans. True fans of Metallica have appreciated how they have evolved over the years - even St Anger has its place and that album was reviled when it came out (I disliked it at first) as the sound was so different but it has since grown on me. Metallica are a band who are not afraid to try something different which is exactly what they did with the black album. They were teenagers when they started so I think the changes represent their growth and maturity over the years. You listen to whatever you want to! It's a joy seeing your reaction to songs I've loved for years. This song is part of a trio there is Unforgiven Unforgiven II & Unforgiven III (my personal favourite is Unforgiven III)
I remember when this album first came out it took me a little while to wrap my brain around and like "Nothing Else Matters", but I instantly loved this one!!
That solo was accidental. Kirk struggled with writing a solo for this song. The band and producer essentially lost their patience and basically said "this is the last take, whatever you come up with that's what's going on the track". The rest is history
I love that Metallica makes you cry mister. That's what a genuine connection to music does. It's a beautiful thing to watch. Also, anyone who doesn't like the way you run your channel, should go start their own. Your Metallica (or any other amazing band) journey should be important to them as it is to you. For me, there is no such thing as too much Metallica.
I really, really recommend that if you go past the Black Album you do these songs first before going deeper: Spit Out The Bone, Cyanide (you did the live version already), My Apocalypse, Crown of Barbed Wire, Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn. Those will make the post-Black album styles easier to digest. They changed their sound pretty much after every album, reinventing themselves constantly.
post black album is weird. quite a few stand out songs but you start having to dig around the doodoo a little bit. IMO it's Black Album followed by a spattering of good songs on some not so good albums until you hit Death Magnetic where they start to be more consistent again. Haven't heard much of 72 Seasons yet but I assume it follows the trend from the last 2.
@@ryantannar5301 I like 72 seasons but for me at least the album works best as an album, with the individual songs largely working best in the context of a full album playthrough. There are highlights of course that stand out.
The Black Album is pure genius, lyrically, musically, and compositionally. It started my love of Metallica and was a gateway to their earlier recordings. I know some people say they sold out to try to appeal to a wider audience. I say, good for them. After all, isn't connecting to people the goal of any artist? Also, like another commenter said, No Leaf Clover is an unbelievable masterpiece. You shouldn't wait a week to listen to it.
Next one is Unforgiven 2! I love your reactions, it's like me hearing them for the first time. Really great would be to see some reactions to their live concert versions too like "thing that should not be" - live in Seattle is another level. And as best as you can, could you try and ignore those who say either Black album or anything after it is not good. There are tens of millions of fans who love it all. It just so happens that a handful of trash niche lovers from the 80ies don't seem to like it.. but whatever. Metallica still keeps rocking in 2024! Metalrock Royalty.
I forgot to warn you that you would probably have some tears with this one. Only the serous old school Thrash metal heads were haters on the Black album. The vast majority of Metallica fans count it as the peak of their evolution, or at least among their top 5 albums. I, myself didn't really ever get past Cliff's tragic death, so as much as I loved and respected Jason's playing, could never place anything above Master of Puppets, but I absolutely respect people's opinions that this album and AJFA are some of Metallica's best work. Anyway, congrats on this great success. I looked back at your reaction to Master of Puppets again, and just smiled at where you were and where you are now. Much love. Keep it going.
Outlaw Torn is an epic track from Load, (ignore the old guard which I’m one of, saying post AJFA is crap. The musicianship of James is amazing all the way through 🤘🏻🤘🏻
The Black Album is a masterpiece. I detest it when people cap on this record. One of their best. I don't see how anyone could say it's not heavy enough. Metallica reigns supreme for a reason. Everybody who doesn't agree can bite it. Excellent to see your reaction to this gut wrenching song.
I love that album and it was one of the first that got me interested in playing the Bass Guitar. Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman were the first riffs I taught myself. Definitely get a bit fed up with some people constantly saying bad things about it when it is a damn good Heavy Metal album
@@johntheisen6791 Wasn't my first Heavy Metal album, that was Seventh Son by Iron Maiden but Black came along a bit later after I heard Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets
@@johntheisen6791 Nope. Fan since Master of Puppets. First 5 albums are all masterpieces to me. Had to go back and discover the rest. First Metallica show was Monsters of Rock w/Van Halen, Dokken and Scorpions in '88 at The Cotton Bowl. Met them on the Black Album tour in January '92 in Dallas. No opening band, 3 encores!!! They played for 3 hours. Kirk walked to the edge of stage, looks down and mouths the words- **while playing Seek and Destroy, mind you**- "How ya doing?" Next thing we know we got invited backstage and hung out with them while they signed autographs after the show. They were super cool to us. Seen them live 12 times, most recently at Cowboys Stadium in August 2023 with the resurrection of what's left of Pantera. Good times. 🤘🏼

I watch you enjoying this so much, and i just wish i could go back and hear it for the first time again. I was 13, my brother bought me the cassette of the black album and donated his Walkman to me. Xmas 91 was awesome. Thanks for doing this one and making me fall in love with Metallica all over again. 🤘
From a production standpoint, they've never sounded better than this album. In fact, this and Dr Dre were what people tested their sound systems with back then
The black album was an eye opener for me. It was first this album, then AC/DC Ballbreaker and Rainbows Rising that made me realize that hard rock/heavy metal CAN be melodic and still pack a serious punch. Will be fun to see the Unforgiven 2 video tonight after a couple of b**rs! Keep up the amazing work, dude!
✨️You know my answer is yes, please, more Metallica! This song lyrically is about James Hetfield life and how he felt growing up. 💥Great Solid reaction Mollyboy!! The God that failed you'll like! I love the Black album! It made them a household name for sure! 🤘〽️❤️🔥
the Black album was the moment they went from thrash metal kings to rock legends and a great Canadian producer Bob Rock was able to capture them at the moment of perfection and it is still one of the best selling rock albums in history! It still sells around 1 million copies a year over 30 years after being released.
It's all just one theme: forgiveness, or lack thereof. Each song has its own thing but looking at it closely, it's all a representation of where James was at that period, mentally speaking. The first is angry, it's about someone else running his life, him not forgiving them. Reflects his upbringing and his anger The second is about letting someone in, loved ones, family, etc, but still being confused and angry. Having grown but not quite being where you think you should be The third is him post rehab. He realizes a lot of things were his fault, so he takes part of the blame too. He's matured and is where he needs to be. Also, the solos are awesome for all 3
I couldn't explain the meaning behind this song any better. This song was the first song I heard from Metallica. I have so much in common with this song in relations to James upbringing. This was singing to my soul and why I believe it's Metallica's greatest song. Just because of it's powerful meaning and message behind it. Espeacially to these once young ears. I was 13 when I first heard this song. 1yr after it's release and it still sings to my soul 30+ years later.

Nothing is wrong with it. IMO its a maturing that happened for the band in his album. I Absofrickenlutely love it. ❤
I got goosebumps watching this! I was 12 when this came out, and I had never heard anything like it. Brings me right back to my childhood. I finally got to see them live when I was 18. One of the best nights of my life.
This album was on the Billboard charts for DECADES!
He also produced Motley Crue’s dr feel good
That’s probably my favourite part of the documentary.
That and Bob convincing James to try a “wooo-maaooww” vocal in Sandman.
Bob Rock "Fine. Do it your way. Let's hear the solo of the year" Kirk: "K"
Metallica have been accused of selling out more than anyone else. The next two albums after this - Load and ReLoad - got those same accusations because of the drastic sound change, despite the fact that really selling out would mean putting out Black Album 2.
And “Memory Remains” is an awesome song
the lyrics on this song are brilliant. I was lucky enough to attend Metallica's Back tour, and the acoustics, vocals and emotions were even more powerful live. What a ride!
I listened to this album every day for a solid year in 1992. It got me through 10 hour shifts of boring guard duty in the military.
Loved it !!!! There is a PART2!!!!!!!!!!!!
The black album is the best! I don't care what anyone says, it is an absolute masterpiece!
Absolutely
It’s sold 34 million albums. I think it’s proved it’s worthy
It's mature, but it seems a lot of fans didn't want to grow)
@GracieUnderFireyou're 💯 correct! I was 26 yrs old when this dropped! I'd just seen the AJFA tour so obviously it was time again for Metallica! They're like fine red wine...gets better every year!! Death Magnetic, Hardwired to self-destruct, Load n Re-Load there's a lot to hear still. Including 3 S&M concerts with three Symphony concerts! Versatility is endless!
I tear up every time that solo starts... absolutely mind-blowing. A masterpiece. Literally perfect 👌
🔥🔥🔥🔥 my Brother across the pond,, my baby girl Adriana got married last year in October!, The unforgiven by Metallica is the song that her and I did our daddy/daughter dance to 🤘🏼❤️🤘🏼 yeah
Dude you have a talent and a gift for recognizing music for what it is!! Your intuitive and the best reaction Channel I found !! You truly get it!! Keep up the good work!!
This is the best one of metallica 🤘🤘
You're so right about the black album. The cliché about them selling out is wank. It's stylistically different to its predecessors, sure, but it's a genuine masterpiece
the black album to me was there last best album, after that is when i thought man what happened to them lol its like a light switch just shut off in them since then
@@jespertin691wrong
One of my all time favorites! Love your reaction, sir.❤
I feel the same way about this Album! 🖤
After the black album is Load and that album is amazing! People shit on it just like the black album and honestly those people are just butt hurt fans. The black album and Load are amazing!! Definitely not 80’s Metallica but that’s cuz they changed their producer and he moved their career into the stratosphere!
The Black Album is amazing
I love the black album!! I never get tired of listening to Metallica!!❤❤
OMG ❤🤘
I seen them live when I was 16 years old in Louisville Kentucky...I'm 51 now and still love there music...Trevis.......
People that dislike the Black album are mainly doing so for reasons other than how good the songs are. Amazing album.
Personally I’m not into anything they released after this album wise but this was the peak of a great run of albums. Only natural that their sound would become this, they are artists, they change and progress…
62yr old woman from Aotearoa/NZ really enjoy you sharing your journey with us all. Your music selection is a reflection of my life🎶🤘👍
You don't deserve to do another Metallica vid bro, you have that right.
Give a listen to Metallica's The Day That Never Comes. They go super Sayan with their instruments!!!!
The Unforgiven 2 and 3 are also worth checking out too
The tears come from knowing this masterpiece will end.
This song is one of the best of James's autobiographical songs. It's literally about his life. Also, possibly Kirk's best solo.
I remember when this album first came out it took me a little while to wrap my brain around and like "Nothing Else Matters", but I instantly loved this one!!
Keep it going! U make a metalheart proud.
Careful with this one, mate. This is some deep deep shit you’re about to dive into and there’s still Parts 2 and 3.
Let’s go.
I'm so glad I grew up in the 90's❤❤❤
Amazing decade, I remember buying the black album on cassette as a 12 year old. What a time it was!
Oh yes! They sold out ..... stadium after stadium after stadium!!! ❤ they brought metal to the masses! Than you Metallica!!
I remember when my father showed me Metallica for the first time, i've been like 10 years old, i just fell in love in their music
That solo was accidental. Kirk struggled with writing a solo for this song. The band and producer essentially lost their patience and basically said "this is the last take, whatever you come up with that's what's going on the track". The rest is history
So improvisational not accidental
Bleeding me with the S. Francisco orchestra is amazing 🤩
post black album is weird. quite a few stand out songs but you start having to dig around the doodoo a little bit.
I’ll definitely be checking out Unforgiven 2 and 3, thanks for watching 🤘🏻
The musicianship of James is amazing all the way through 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Always feel nostalgic listening to this.
The black album is good but not a masterpiece let me guess it’s the first album that you ever listen to or you grew up on it.
Good times. 🤘🏼
@@loristone9242 Very cool. Sounds about like the time I got lucky and met the band Master of Puppets tour May86’ Aragon Ballroom Chicago. Armored Saint was opening we had passes for balcony watching Armored Saint. I looked to my right and Lars was sitting next to me watching also and that he walked us backstage where we met the rest of the band I got to shake Cliffs hand I was 19 years old. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
In my opinion load, reload, garage days are still really worth listening to. I haven’t listened to much after st anger but they might still be just as amazing as ever.
PLEASE react to the whole Unforgiven trilogy. Lyrically and musically its a masterpiece, and you can hear the evolution of this mini-story
From a production standpoint, they've never sounded better than this album. In fact, this and Dr Dre were what people tested their sound systems with back then
The most beautiful song ever made! The liryc is amazing, it's a lesson of life!
Once again an amazing video, im waiting to see more!
….I’ve never been sure why ppl hate on black album. I love it.
I remember standing in line outside a sound warehouse in '91 to buy this album. Changed the world, changed the sound of music, changed everything
Reflects his upbringing and his anger
The second is about letting someone in, loved ones, family, etc, but still being confused and angry. Having grown but not quite being where you think you should be
The third is him post rehab.
The black album is my favorite. My husband and I love Metallica. Nothing but love here. ❤
Screw the haters, Metallica is one of those bands that you just have to hear every single thing they've done, even Garage Inc. and the S&M album... except for saint anger, ...JK😆
This song is just beautiful. I nearly cry every time I listen to it. So deep.
Wanna annoy Metallica fans even more, check out S&M 😂.
Metallica with an orchestra !!
Personally I like my metal with some melody so both these albums float my boat
The unforgiven trilogy is beautiful
Avenged Sevenfold 🔜 🙏
Wait until you hear unforgiving 2 and 3. Unforgivin 2 is so good, it's one my favorite Metallica songs.
