Hi Rebecca, I have just found your wonderful site and am about to cast on for Ranunculus. As far as blocking goes I like to almost always do it because 1: Some yarns, particularly pure wool, are coated with a very fine layer of oil in order to go through the spinning process with ease. I use a small dollop of baby shampoo (to remove the oil) in warm water, gently manipulate the piece and leave for about 20mins then a gentle repeat with water only to rinse. I use the towel on the floor method. 2: No matter how careful you are while knitting, the yarn and piece will pick up dust, hair from your cat 😸 oil from your hands etc, washing and blocking cleans all this off. 3: Some yarns, particularly real wool or alpaca etc, will “bloom” as they relax in a lovely warm bath. This accentuates colours and beautiful stitches and evens out tension. I agree with everything you say however, your advice is fab 💞
I love all of this! Also, measure you guage swatch before and after blocking. It will help you see how much the fabric grows naturally and has helped me many a time - if I hadn't done this, some sweaters I've made would have been way bigger than I wanted! Knowing how your fabric naturally grows when it gets wet is soooo helpful because each yarn, needle size, stitch pattern, and individual knitter will combine to affect the fabric in a different way.
Thanks ever so much for all your hard work in bringing us all these Ranunculus videos. Would you ever think of doing the same for the Ilha sweater by Orlane Sucche? I've bought the pattern, but I have a few stumbling blocks!😊
Thanks for the very usefull instructies on how to knit the Ranunculus. Very helpfull! As we speak I am knitting my 10th 😂 (half of them I gave away to several friends as a present)I Maybe I have an idea for a next video: I am struggling in choosing yarns. Especially when I want to make it with 2 threads. For example a fingering yarn with mohair. Maybe you can give us some thoughts about that? Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank you again! I just finished my First ranunculus and love how it looks. It’s a silk and bamboo yarn and I was afraid of what would happen if I blocked it. Thanks for the affirmation that it’s my choice! It is however going to have to be washes at some point lol. Not sure what this yarn will do?? Any knowledge regarding this fabric? ☺️
I’m not sure either, knowing the fiber content is not always a tried and true indicators of what will happen, construction of the yarn, quality, and percentages make it unpredictable. I would think it won’t have a lot of stretch, and conversely, won’t bounce back to original shape without help. Just like blocking, if you wash it take measurements beforehand, wash as gently as possible, and lay flat to dry to those measurements if you can. The wetter it is when you lay it out, the heavier it will be, and the more it may want to try to grow, so roll/spin as much water out as possible and gently shape ❤️
Thanks for the video, it's super useful! I have a question, though - in your experience, does a mohair & merino sweater "survive" a drain & spin cycle, too?
It should- I haven’t blocked the one I’m making yet. If you’re concerned you can always put it in a garment mesh bag to protect it. The spin cycle really only does that, spin. It doesn’t agitate, which is where I would be worried about anything delicate catching on a piece of the center of the machine
Hi Ginna! I will make a “note” of it- the Love Note top is lovely and has some similarities to the Ranunculus (structure top down, lacework yoke, etc), so we may not do it right on the heels of this one, but I will take it under advisement! ❤️❤️❤️
In theory, blocking sets things in place and you won’t have to do it again- the first washing of a garment is when this is needed/helpful. It may not hurt to lay it out to dry other times as well- but you shouldn’t need to do as much other times. Especially because I wear layers under my sweaters, I don’t wash them very often 🤷♀️

Thank you. I blocked my two Anisah shawls and they actually do look better, post blocking.
That’s fantastic to know ❤️ I bet mine would too, I’ve just not gotten around to it yet! 😱❤️

@@SunDragonTipsTricks Thank you for reply and I hope you do it in the future, take care 🙋♀️ 🌞❤
Once it is blocked and it is ok.., do you have To block again each time you are washing it? Thanks in advance 🧶🧶
