    I just found your podcast and am so pleased I did! I have always resisted the Ranunculus (just because it is so popular) until I saw one knitted up in a particular yarn. I bought the yarn but have still been hesitant to start. I have been knitting longer than you have lived but have never made a top down garment. The way you described how you approached this knit as a new knitter was inspiring so I guess I just have to bite the bullet and try. I am still a bit concerned about fit - the body not too big (mutton dressed up as lamb) and more room in the sleeves - but guess they are hurdles to jump after I get started. Thanks again, I’ll certainly be checking out your past podcasts.

    Would love to knit the Ranunculus but I want to use a 3ply wool yarn without mohair. But dont know how to modify the pattern. By modifying the pattern/needle gauge wont help my 3ply wool.

    • @thepoppylibrary
      @thepoppylibrary  Рік тому +1

      This is a good question, but I am going to give you a risky answer. I would suggest going up a needle size or two but definite swatch. I always think having a slightly bigger gauge is better than a sweater that is too tight, but I do love a baggy sweater. I don't have experience in modifying patterns just yet so I just modify my needle sizes to make it easy on my brain that doesn't like math. Once I figure out how to modify patterns, I will definitely share what I learn. Thanks for watching!

  • @CreativityWithStamps
    @CreativityWithStamps Рік тому +9

    Loved this episode!!! I have had this pattern in my stash for so long but I am so intimidated in starting it because I simply cannot understand on how to modify it for different yarns and to make it fit the way I want it to fit. It's one size so, for example when it says to CO 60 stitches for the neck (with worsted weight yarn) and I'm using either a Fingering or DK then I don't know how to modify the # of stitches and then forget even thinking on how to modify the front and back short rows...ugh!!! This is keeping me stuck so I have not even started to attempt it.

    • @thepoppylibrary
      @thepoppylibrary  Рік тому +6

      Oh see I got stuck on this too when I first started to choose yarn for it, but I would say, for me, this pattern is one where I try not to figure it out. I let the pattern and the yarn (and the ONE NEEDLE SIZE) run with the design and I take a back seat. I may not look it but I am size large or extra large due to my bust size so I really don't want to mess up my measurements. It's a frightening process at first but then after blocking, I always find the sweater just does its thing and ends up being flattering. It's like a little gift from the yarn itself and such a wild experience. Hope you give it a try!

    • @donnaleiffer7056
      @donnaleiffer7056 9 місяців тому +1

      I’m wondering the same thing. Made one with fingering weight and it has just enough ease, but if I try worsted, how big is it going to end up? Guess I’ll just try it and see! 🙂

    • @Ynnsie
      @Ynnsie 8 місяців тому +3

      The idea is to knit any yarn - fingering to worsted - on the one size of needle. It you think about it, the needle size just sets the length of yarn that each stitch takes up. In other patterns, we adjust the needle size to control the density / opacity of the fabric. A 4" swatch of DK on size 10/6mm needles will take up a tiny bit less yarn than the 4" swatch on 10s in worsted. BUT the DK swatch will be looser and more see-through than the same-size swatch done with the bigger strand of worsted.

    Great episode. I’ve had the Ranunculus pattern for a few years and have seen so many people knit it. I was a bit put off by the lack of clear sizing. People seem to use whatever yarn they want and they just get whatever size they get. I did get the additional extended sizes part of the pattern, but it still wasn’t that clear to me how and when to reference it. I’m an experienced knitter, but I like a clear pattern! Anyway, I will try it again, because I love the look of this sweater and I have a feeling that if I just get started, I’ll get it.

But I ended up increasing a lot at the base of the yoke and switching to another pattern below the yoke. Not finished but I have tried it on several times and it seems to have worked out! A Friend to Knit With found the sleeves too narrow near the top so that’s why I switched.

I have malabrigo Susurro which is a silk linen wool and I have 2 skeins of plum purple I bought at Hobby Lobby 2 years ago that are hand dyed and I just got some mohair to make myself a long sleeve winter version. I watched Selma from Little Big Knits talk about her several Ranunculus sweaters. She didn’t do the fussy cast on, just started with the number of stitches that are supposed to be on the neck. Worked for me. I have made three of these sweaters and plan to make a few more

    I’m doing the ranunculus right now in a pretty pink linen cotton for summer. The great thing about it is you don’t have to do a swatch cause you don’t have to pick your size until you finish with the yoke and I just check my gauge at that point. Gauge too small? Knit a bigger size! Gauge to big? Knit a smaller size! I knew my gauge was gonna be on the “too many stitches per inch” side so I opted for the wider neckline to insure I could get it over my head. 😂 so far the rest is great!
    Enjoyed your video and feeling like I’m finally in the Ranunculus Club 😊

      That is a great question. I used Earl Grey Fibers and sadly I don't see them active anymore (trust me, I am really depressed about this). But I would say, La Bien Aimee's mohair line compares quite nicely.
