The Arona Should Be Worried: 2019 Volkswagen T-Cross First Drive

- Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession! Believe it or not, but Volkswagen has NEVER made a small SUV, until now. Welcome, the brand new T-Cross, the German brand's newest (and smallest) SUV, which will go against the likes of the SEAT Arona, the Citroen C3 Aircross, and plenty more.
Has it got what it takes to compete in a fiercely competitive part of the car market? I had a quick spin in it yesterday to find out.

Sir i have the VW T - Cross comfortline DSG 7 speed Automatic gearbox in South Africa it is so smooth the gears find the higher gear changes to seven speed which saves fuel i recomend the DSG direct shift double built in clutch beautiful car when it was launched into South Africa in 2019 value for money in the small SUV segment compared to other brands like Ford ECO SPORT etc
I have the 2021 Active model - I love it so much
Great Video Preview. I particularly like the R-Line Model
Great video. Really enjoy your videos and you seem like a proper sound guy.😊
Cheers Neil, I really appreciate that 👍. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the feedback.
There is now a 4 cyl 1.5 engine I have one now for a few months I’m very impressed great engine for overtaking .
Hi Rob, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.
still think the suzuki vitara S is the best in this class with that 1.4 booster jet ,now the yeti has gone, great review as always thanks, very nice car
Loved the video and subscribed ...
Thanks Cyril, I really appreciate that! :)
Just paid the deposit about week ago.Superb test thanks a lot!
Hello Arek, thanks for the great feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Well done Volkswagen, Anxiously waiting for T Cross to launch in India.
Really informative review. Thank you. Although I do suspect the 95 PS engine in particular, will struggle with the the boot fully loaded with luggage etc.
Hello 121zoso, thanks for watching, and thanks for the feedback. Yes, I suspect the car would certainly feel a bit more sluggish when it is fully laden.
Professionell af mate. NIce
Thank you Dave! Thanks for watching.
Very nice review, Volkswagen always shock me with their interior size and Volume they really design practical stuff, you are a tall man and look at you in the rear seats, you actually fit in this tiny crossover, I am also impressed with the amount of boot space the T-cross has, way better than C-HR and other tiny crossovers.
Hi jp ch, that's one of the good things about being tall, I can actually provide a good gauge of how roomy a car really is. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching.
Great review.
How t-cross compares to face lifted Vitara when it comes to ride comfort and noise insulation?
Which one would you chose for cheap everyday commute?
Hello Georgi, thanks for watching. That's a good question, and to be honest, I would need to drive them back-to-back. Both are good cars, and choosing one is tricky. The T-Cross is classier, and more stylish, but I find the Vitara a bit more fun and characterful.
Nice video!!!
How about the consumption in the first half with the 115 hp version?
Hello Eddie, it was a very short drive and there was quite a bit of stopping (to film and to take photos, etc.) so I didn't make a note of it as I knew it would not be an accurate representation. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Aaron! Have you ever driven the Ssangyong Tivoli (which I know needs a better petrol engine)? I know that you have comprehensively driven the Vitara (both pre and post-facelift and on and off-road), as well as lots of other competitors such as the Arona and Kia Stonic, of course. The T-Cross is interesting given the fact that the base model is actually cheaper than the equivalent Arona (albeit with some differences in specification)... I think if you go over £20,000 with either, it is a bit much to pay for a car like this, as it encroaches on the Ateca and T-Roc. Superb engines in all four of them, of course!
No I haven't, the Tivoli is a car that piqued my interest at one time as you see very little of them on the roads. Well, at least from my experience, anyway. I did contact SsangYong, and they were not in a position to give me cars. Thanks for watching!
@@CarObsession, yes, they have a very small dealer network, so I am not surprised you don't see too many of them! The nearest dealer to Epsom/Sutton is in Virginia Water, which isn't exactly close.... There is one in Worthing, though, I gather. I have driven two Tivolis, both 2WD 1.6 ELX diesel manuals, one a 2016 model year and one a 2017 model year (there are equipment differences). I absolutely loved both, especially the 2017 model year car which had standard lane keeping assistance and a beige leather interior with dandy blue metallic paint... Shame they weren't able to lend you one, it is certainly a car I would like to do a proper review on, especially as they have a standard seven year 150,000 mile warranty!
One major issue that everyone seems to miss including VW conveniently, is that the T cross only has 40 litre fuel tank capacity. That's a smaller tank than some smaller cars. Meaning filling up more often and less range of miles. It's a major flaw and vw doesn't even mention it on its brochure.
Hi,
great UA-cam channel, any chance of a VW T-Cross R-Line review please ?
Hiya Adz- thanks for the feedback. I will review one if I get the chance - thanks for watching.
@@CarObsession perfect look forward to it
Regards Adam
I see they have the 1.6Tdi showing as an engine option now so any chance of you reviewing that?
Hi Wild nFrantic, thanks for watching. I'll see if I can get my hands on it, but I doubt it's a car many will buy, especially as car brands are moving away from diesel in the UK.
This car's going to sell well every review is scoring it very highly it's quite well priced too please don't compare it to a Citroen E Cross the Vw is different class in terms of build quality and refinement look inside a E Cross you'll see what i mean.
Hello Keith, I've reviewed the C3 Aircross and the interior isn't that bad, but I get your point. Thanks for watching.
Why isn’t the 150PS 1.5 TSI Evo offered on the T-Cross in the UK like it is on the SEAT Arona sister car?
Honestly, I have no idea. Thanks for watching Josh.
Vw decided not to due to it being available in the T Roc and they didn't want it eating to its sales.
I hope they release it in Canada! 😢
Nothing if they do. Dont get the S. Get the SE
6:50 ...if u use Michelin primacy suv tyres will the tyre noise go away?
I wouldn't know I'm afraid, I'm not a specialist when it comes to tyres. Thanks for watching.
Im buying one this week but i dont know which color
I quite the Orange (I think it's called Energy Orange) but I'd avoid the matching alloys as I personally think it's garish. Thanks for watching.
I went black
Vw must have had their water spiked. They already had T-roc small crossover suv now the t-cross hmmm? Think the Arona will be safe until end of the year when the Skoda Kamiq comes out and not forgetting the ford puma small suv with supposedly a massive class leading boot.
The R-Toc is in the same class as the Ateca, my friend ;) It's also the best-selling car in its class in Europe. Thanks for watching Joe :)
Car Obsession I thought the t roc was much smaller than the Ateca. Good to know. Well done on the videos
@@joe80ss Cheers Joe!
@@CarObsession ,hi actually the Tiguan is the best selling in its class in Europe . The T roc is a close second . Both are golf based though .
@@stevejewiss532 I'd need to double check the VW presentation, but I'm pretty sure they said the T-Roc was the best selling at the moment. I'll double check, though, as I may have misheard. Thanks for watching.
Best in class until the Skoda Kamig comes along which will be more practical with more space and better value for money.
Hi Keith, thanks for watching. I'm yet to drive the Kamiq, but hopefully I get the chance in the near future.
Would be brilliant as an R
Hi Mike, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting.
Would be introduced in India within June 2020?
I'm not too sure, thanks for watching 👍🏽.
April 2021
I don't think Seat has anything to worry about given the Arona is so much cheaper than the T-Cross.
Hi Bailey, thanks for watching. You'd think that, but the T-Cross actually has a cheaper starting price.
@@CarObsession Here in Germany the T-Cross starts at €17.975 and the Arona at €16.290....maybe it depends on the country.
@@PandaPowerable Interesting, the Arona is more than the T-Cross in the UK.
You do realise that Seat is a subsidiary of VW?
I certainly do, which is why I made the comment about the DSG later on in the video. Brands such as Audi, Lamborghini, Skoda, Audi, Bentley, and Porsche are also part of VAG.
The SEAT Arona is built on the same platform as the T-Cross, and that platform (the MQB A0, if you want to get nerdy) was first introduced for the Ibiza.
Car Obsession Which is precisely my point, apologies I did not expand on it. Both brands are owned by the same company, the cars are almost identical if you take away the body panels and interior (and perhaps a few software tweaks). Hence, it is a bit odd to claim that Arona should be worried - it is not competing against the T-Cross, but rather alongside it. VAG makes a profit regardless of which you buy. If anything, they capture an even greater share of the market by giving customers more choice at a very low additional cost, since the same platform, engines, transmissions etc. can be used for both.
@@SSW2503 Yeah I can see where you coming from, but they are still separate brands to a degree, so there is still some form of competition to be had in the new car market. Try not to take the title too literally, though, as it's more of a device to set the scene for the video and to encourage people to watch it (but not in a clickbaity way - I can't stand that).
@@SSW2503 I don’t think you understand how businesses work. Seat is absolutely competing with VW and Skoda for sales. They might be owned by the same umbrella organisation, but they are subsidiary companies in their own right with their own balance sheets.
