Took me a while to realize the reason Oliver always lost in the early seasons was because Merlyn was a former member of the league, while Oliver was only trained by Talia.
There's also the fact that Merlyn, as he himself stated to Oliver at the end of S1, had a cause he fought for, while Oliver wasn't yet sure of why he was fighting. Even by season 1 Oliver was faster and stronger than Merlyn (again, stated by Merlyn himself) but his mind wasn't 100% into it. That doesn't change the fact that Merlyn was extremely skilled and dangerous though.
Well that and oliver wasn’t really sure on why he’s fighting. Up until the finale oliver has been confused and worried that he what he was doing was only helping the enemy.
Season 1 Malcom was a beast as well as Season 1 & 2 Slade.. This show had the ability to turn all its villains into jokes during the later seasons when actually the show itself went downhill.
