In late 93 I was riding home after finishing my late shift at 2am, I was stationary at a set of lights just 150 feet from my work exit. I was hit from behind by a Drunk Driver at an estimate of 40mph. I was thrown to the otherside of the road on the pavement, the driver stopped walked back to me and left the scene. I spent 8 months in hospital and the next 2 years having operations. They caught him, a young male 24 years, the court case lasted 9 days and he was found guilty. At no point did he enquire how I was, my injuries were given in the report at court and read out, witness's at the scene said he walked over to me and looked and left. He was given a 2 year ban, a 2K fine + costs, I had life changing injuries, pain and mobility issues. It sickens me to see the victim played, as far as I am concerned the punishment does not go far enough. ~trooper
It is the failure of the system that focuses all it's attention on the criminal and why they did it, what they can do to 'reform' them. The balance is badly out of kilter as all victims will agree.

It really rips my knitting the sheer blatant disregard that anyone who gets behind the wheel of a car after drinking can be so disrespectful to other road users and pedestrians and try to put the blame on someone else or a bull###t excuse and just not care. My dad lost his life in an RTA and unfortunately so did the driver of the other vehicle, after the police had done investigating it turned out the other driver had left a pub only 15mins before the collision. 🙏 25yrs and i still miss him.
So sorry to ready this. I'm surprised you could watch this video. I haven't been able to watch the whole video yet. My uncle and aunt were nearly killed by a drunk driver...the passenger in the drunk driver's car died...he was just getting a lift home. I don't know how people can have such a disregard for human life to even contemplate getting drunk then getting behind the wheel of a car. Watching the video makes me both angry and sad.
My gran was killed by a drink driver when I was 10. My wife and 2 kids barely survived a head on collision where the other driver crossed into their lane. My wife is permanently disabled as a result. It's disgusting to see people who refuse to understand the consequences of their actions.
That last comment strikes home fro me. I used to work with someone who had been convicted of death by dangerous driving. He'd lost control of his car while speeding and had collided head on with a car driven by a mum of 2. He told me about it one day and ended by saying... "So, yeah. I lost my car, my job and my license. Oh yeah, and that woman died too."

Done it and totally agree with you,I do occasionally have alcohol but very rarely, mostly Christmas and New Year but I have 1 non-alcoholic drink to every alcoholic one
Drink driving has been on the decline for the last 50 years. This messaging does work, and it helps if you know someone who has died or been hurt because of a drink driver. But it still happens far too often.
I was once tempted to drink and drive, my daughter stopped me by hiding the car keys - I was going to take her to her mate's house, but she hid them and told me she was staying home instead. Since that day, 17 years ago, I've not touched a drop of alcohol.
@@FordnanYeah it is technically illegal, but pragmatically it's not even in the same league as drink driving because you're only putting your own life at risk, nobody else's. Also you need to be sober enough to balance, if you're too drunk you'll fall off in the first 15 yards, if you make it past that you'll probably be sober enough to get home. 10mph on a bike is a lot less dangerous to yourself than a car capable of doing over 100. Probably still a recipe for disaster if your route entails a steep downhill though. Not encouraging it but as public transport is useless and taxis can be a nightmare, if you're getting desperate definitely choose a pedal bike over a car.

To many times we see the courts letting drink drivers of when they plead hardship if they lose their licence. Tough, suck it up and deal with the consequences. 🇬🇧
They need to get rid of that ability to plead exceptional hardship BS completely. If losing their license would cause exceptional hardship for them or people dependent on them, they should be extra motivated to treat their license like the precious document it is. People need to know that their actions will have consequences, and that they won't get to turn on the water works to keep a driving license they absolutely do not deserve. The legal system needs to stop putting everybody else in danger so that somebody who doesn't give two hoots about other people can keep driving.
@@damionlee7658 I agree it's complete bs. It's hardly setting a deterrent if they can plead hardship and keep their license. It should be a straight ban no exceptions
@@likhwadube5937 "Drink drivers get a ban ALWAYS" You're living in a land of unicorns and make believe it you think your statement is remotely accurate. There are many legal firms that specialise in (and are very publicly proud of) helping drink and drug driving offenders keep their license. It isn't called exceptional hardship when dealing with drink driving, but among the list of mitigating factors which may allow a person found guilty of drink driving to keep their license, is if they are the sole licensed driver for their family. (You may notice how banning that driver might suggest causing exceptional hardship for that family... A rose by any other name.)
County Durham needs a big shake up regarding driving standards in general, mobile phone use, close passes by motorists on horses and bicycles and illegal motorbikes. These clips need to be on local news too!
Exactly the reason I take the car to work the week before Christmas every year. There are that many drink drivers coming out of Edinburgh on the A90 at 01:00 it’s far too dangerous to take the scooter. So many near misses with these clowns, when will they learn!
As an Aussie now in the U.K., I was brought up with the ad campaign, “If you drink n’drive you’re a bloody idiot!” They need something similar in this country along with way, way more random roadside checks. In Oz the Cops will close a six lane motorway in both directions on a Friday and/or Saturday night and breathalyse every single driver passing through the road block. It was always amusing seeing the fleet of parked cars on the verge/embankment belonging to all the drivers who failed. The carpark of shame.
When I was young I was an idiot, as I've gotten older I've learned from that. I'm shocked by how many of these are really not youths, I'm also sadly not shocked by the flippant attitudes of a lot of them, very little introspective thought goes on with a lot of people, or empathy.....
Wow, it's pretty scary that all this happened in one small area of the UK. I cannot understand the "don't you have anything better to do" when around 250 people die annually in the UK through drunk driving. That is like a full Jet airliner coming down. That's nearly four times as many died in Grenfell Tower. That's five times the number who died in the 7/7 terror attacks. It's more than ten times the Manchester Arena bombing. Well, you get the idea but to act like it isn't a significant crime with significant victims is ridiculous.
There is still so much resistance to the idea that drink driving is a serious offence! All these people think they are 'decent' and that if they kill someone by driving drunk, it isn't really their fault!
I hit standing water at 50mph after leaving work, the emergency services were spot-on. I have no memory of the accident but could get copies of the call the car made to Ems and bodycam footage. But I don't want to know the state I was in. However, these videos that show them causing DDs should be shown to everyone more often xx

@@vetworker there really doesn't need tolerance for that built into the limit, you just have the law written to allow this effect by prescription medication to be a legitimate defence in court.

You're either a lightweight and was more drunk than a normal person or you're terrible at driving lol. I could drink 2 vodka and cokes and still get in a garage no problem.

I don't know how the police have the patience to deal with these people.
It's called professionalism, don't lower your standards because someone else has
The arrogance and self centred people in this is staggering. A few years back driving down a country lane at 2300 and saw a car in a hedge with someone in it. Been to a Christmas party and decided to drive and crashed, I opened the door to get her out and she was plastered, needed the fire brigade as the car was balancing precariously, police came and nicked her. Only care about themselves
You should be ashamed of yourself driving at 2300. The speed limit is probably only 60!
@@lesleywillis6177 it’s ok, I was in the millennium falcon at the time
"Haven't you got anything better to do?" As a traffic cop, no.
I love this accent, almost makes the police seem more friendly as well (or maybe they just are more than here in Essex)
@@issigonis975 hire some people and sort it privately…
The patience you guys must have… Every driver should see this.
A real eye opener .. it’s scary how many people are actually doing it ….. 😮
The morons that the coppers have to deal with on a daily basis! Police got my sympathy.
Ex fire service, went to a bloke on christmas day morning, who had buried his car into the central reservation of the M3. He was adamant that he was on the driveway of his house so he couldnt lose his license as it was private property, had no idea where he actually was.
Excellent Work, good to see something useful put on social media these days.
"you're going to ruin my career" she says after crashing into an nhs nurses' car after a very long shift. I hate that I share an island with these people and their excuses.
These videos are excellent. They really show the dangers and stupidity of driving a vehicle drunk.
I noticed that the very short clip where someone says, "It's hit the tree at some speed" needed no further comment.
I stopped drinking 23 years ago , it is very liberating , no worry about driving with a Hangover etc ! 🙏
These are brilliant, thank you. They're hard to watch, but hopefully will get through to some folk that wouldn't otherwise hear.
Hopefully, but unfortunately there is always going to be a small group of people that just don't care.
Great sobering collection of real footage.
@paulsengupta971 they say that the grief heals with time but the anger and contempt doesn't. Hope you are well my friend..
This is sad af but the subtitles are LEGENDARY (I hope his thyme was ok)
My gran was killed by a drink driver when I was 10. My wife and 2 kids barely survived a head on collision where the other driver crossed into their lane. My wife is permanently disabled as a result.
It's disgusting to see people who refuse to understand the consequences of their actions.
1:36 "I'm not an asshole"

Driving after being disqualified for DEATH by dangerous driving? How is that person free?
Keep this kind of content up, well done
Thank you for posting your videos ❤🙏
Choose your mode of transport wisely this Christmas. Police car, ambulance, hearse or just a taxi
I gave up alcohol three years ago, after being a heavy drinker for forty years. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Life has become so much better without it. If it’s something any of you have thought about doing, l encourage you to try.
I've never really drunk it, because it makes people stupid/horrible, and rots the body and mind.
Alcohol free for 5 years. Absolutely agree, makes you feel so much healthier and leaves your head so much clearer if you don’t touch it.
Done it and totally agree with you,I do occasionally have alcohol but very rarely, mostly Christmas and New Year but I have 1 non-alcoholic drink to every alcoholic one
Sadly no matter how many drink/drive campaigns, no matter how many deaths or ruined lives, these people will just keep on doing it regardless.
Completely true, sadly. I see it everywhere these days, a very significant portion of the population are completely blinded by their own ego.
As a beer enthusiast I must recommend public transport, taxi, unicycle or walking.
Condolences to the bereaved and disaffected by intoxicated drivers
Cycling under the influence is also a crime.
@@Fordnanif you can ride a unicycle while piss drunk that's just called a bartrick not a crime
@@alexanderwoolley1623Not in the eyes of the law. Seriously. Walk. Get a taxi. Phone a friend or relative.
@@Fordnan I discovered this once upon a time when I wondered if I could cycle home from a beer festival and decided to look up the relevant laws, before deciding to use the bus like a sensible person!
did enjoy the geordie copper with the subtitles of the drunk guy being "heyisjsdi abushsj" then the copper just going "hawey lol"
The guy who said he’s disqualified for death by dangerous driving 🤯
This is a very hard hitting video and needs to be shown on tv screens. It's amazing how stupid some people can be getting into a vehicle after a drink or more. It's not worth it. The message is very clear. Don't drink and drive as it can destroy so many lives.
I don't think you understand how that works, you can't just plead hardship, give some bullshit story and get out of a ban.@@damionlee7658
No Court does that ever! It’s only for the totting up scenario where people accumulate points to more than 12 points. Drink drivers get a ban ALWAYS.
@@likhwadube5937 "Drink drivers get a ban ALWAYS"
You're living in a land of unicorns and make believe it you think your statement is remotely accurate.
A lifetime of regret for a few beers!!! It's just not worth it. Well done with these videos, keep posting
What a brilliant advertising campaign this is - Hats off to Durham Police for this. Amazing, impactful work.
1:35 "I'm not an arsehole, mate"
- Yes, you are.
1:37 "I'm a decent guy"
- No you absolutely are not.
County Durham needs a big shake up regarding driving standards in general, mobile phone use, close passes by motorists on horses and bicycles and illegal motorbikes. These clips need to be on local news too!
When you’re so pissed that you don even know you’ve been in an accident, then you need the book thrown at you.
Absolutely outstanding piece of content.
So many examples of "I'm a good person". These people really are clueless.
They are trying to convince themselves as well as others...
"...I'm a decent guy mate, I'm a decent guy." Not if you drink and drive, you're not!
Don't bloody drink and drive!
Exactly the reason I take the car to work the week before Christmas every year. There are that many drink drivers coming out of Edinburgh on the A90 at 01:00 it’s far too dangerous to take the scooter. So many near misses with these clowns, when will they learn!
As an Aussie now in the U.K., I was brought up with the ad campaign, “If you drink n’drive you’re a bloody idiot!”
They need something similar in this country along with way, way more random roadside checks.
In Oz the Cops will close a six lane motorway in both directions on a Friday and/or Saturday night and breathalyse every single driver passing through the road block. It was always amusing seeing the fleet of parked cars on the verge/embankment belonging to all the drivers who failed. The carpark of shame.
Christmas is coming, get these clips on the TV as part as the drink/drive campaign
"Death by careless driving" and he still drinks and gets into a car to drive it? clearly not learnt their lesson, should be prison for him
Yep, definitely.
Gaslighters - “you’re gonna ruin my career” ……
It’s unbelievable that some people risk so much for the sake of a £10 or £20 taxi ride.
Just beggars belief!
Well, you get the idea but to act like it isn't a significant crime with significant victims is ridiculous.
drink driving, should be an automatic ticket the jail.
No one has the guts to own up to what they have done. They are only bothered about themselves !
Powerful video that! This sort of thing ought to be shown more often and on more media ...
The arrogance of some of the drivers when confronted with what they have done, or might have happened because of their actions is just shocking.
i love the subtitles
Its time to get rid of the legal limit entirely, no limit, no excuses, jail and a lifetime ban.
The thing with that is some medication etc can give a tiny reading of alcohol in your system. There has to be a small tolerance to allow for that.
Simple answer is don’t drink at all.
@@vetworker there really doesn't need tolerance for that built into the limit, you just have the law written to allow this effect by prescription medication to be a legitimate defence in court.
@@damionlee7658 That would mean constant court cases. There just has to be a much, much lower limit.
@@RokeJulianLockhart.s13ouq you get that every case of a drink driving charge has a court case already, right? Having a 0.0 limit wouldn't change that. Bear in mind also, that any potential prescription medication levels aren't going to magically lead people to being pulled over by police for no reason. " your going to ruin my career", how selfish these dangerous drunks are.....remove their license forever.

Despise drink driving but that’s the chillest dude ever! Copper: You had a bad crash. Drink driver: you are joking

This is absolutely horrendous !!
Being a former drinking driver in previous years it terrifies me to think of the damage and hurt my actions could've caused... thank god there was police out there to see my misconduct and remove my licence until I seen the error of my ways ...
Thankfully I remained peaceful and caused no lasting pain
"That's not my car, mine's the one with the blue flashing lights" 😂😂
People's non- existent self- awareness absolutely cracks me up. Why do they think they are decent people when they drink & drive ?
Jesus the responses are unbelievable!
"Im a decent guy" who just put everyones saftey at risk by driving drunk, it should be instant prison sentence for anyone drink driving!
OMG! This should be shown on TV. Drink drivers are the worst, with mobile phone users coming in second. I did get a chuckle from the subtitles when that bloke was explaining what happened. The subtitles couldn't understand him either.
Ashamed to say that I've been done for drink driving twice. Last time in 2017. I got a bad drinking and drug problems and I will never get behind the wheel again. Even if I beat my demons I really don't think I will ever trust myself fully and I'm not going to put anyone ever in danger from me driving again. Luckily nobody else was involved when I was convicted either time. I know its coming from someone who regularly drove under the influence but just get a taxi or the bus or walk
These should be used on TV, I’m not sure that it would get through to all the idiots that drink / drug drive, but if it saves one persons life it would be worth it.
