It’s week three of our drink and drug drive campaign, and we’re releasing further bodycam footage of drivers found behind the wheel and under the influence of alcohol.
Overturned vehicles, children in the back seat, collisions narrowly avoiding pedestrians, and… “I feel alright though.”
Whether it’s one pint, two pints or more, here’s what happens when it all goes wrong.
Start listening, life is precious.
" I was supposed to pick my child up"......... and you honestly can't see the problem?
It's a wonder she can even pick her feet up!
@@jwrobin21But she’s only 11 points over.

@@iangascoigne8231
If you can hold your drink, 14 points is not a lot.
If you CANNOT hold your drink, 14 points over is A LOT.
From personal experience, driving when tired for a few miles (just to get to somewhere you can rest) is bad enough.
Driving whilst over the limit must be worse.
Really good to put this footage on UA-cam. And think more like this is required all year round 👍
It's entertaining, but isn't a deterrent. People never learn as they think it doesn't apply to them.
@@OH2023-cj9if Should come with a 5 year driving ban and a 6 month prison sentence. Anyone found driving while banned another 6 months in prison. Message would soon get through.

The amount of these drivers who claim 'they've done nothing wrong' or rely on their licence for work yet still drink and drive is shocking.

Pity the old fashioned drink drive adverts aren't shown on TV as much these days, they were always hard hitting
Fewer and fewer people watch traditional TV these days, so many people watch on demand television now. But you're right, those ads really did curb the cultural approach to drink driving for many people.
Those adverts were obviously contrived and nobody paid attention to them. They really need to be seeing authentic bodycam footage like this, making it clear that these are real arrests of real drink drivers - and here's the consequences.
I think these clips are more hard-hitting than the preachy old adverts TBH. The way people watch media these days, I recon more will get the message from content like this.
Clearly not cos people still do it, you dolt. Hit hard for you maybe
@@halfbakedproductions7887 The ads did work on a lot of people, but not for the group that's a bit more... stupid and entitled.
Excellent job Durham Police. Well done.
My reply when breath tested how far does that thing go back ? Cop replied far enough , my reply what 30 years ? I felt quite smug with a zero
@@nickcoppard5335 glad you are so proud
They're only doing it to get credit. Most of the time, cops can't be bothered doing even the basic aspects of their jobs.
That woman that said "i dont care. If I die, I die". Yeah, I'm sure the families of any potential victims you create due to your selfishness won't feel the same.
A product of the modern world. Narcissism is plaguing society today.
That was one of the scummiest clips shown, absolute zero consideration for anyone but herself.
The lady should ask her loved ones if they care, I mean they're the ones left with the mess.
Nobody cares. The west is dead anyway.
Her response sums up her entire approach to life. She doesn't give a second thought to anybody but her.
The guy at 2:43 was blowing that high on the calibrated machine back at the nick. The readings from that machine are the ones presented in court. His readings would have dropped slightly on the way there so Lord only knows what his roadside reading was like.
Also, just going to pick up your child and you're blotto. Fabulous.
He could barely speak, imagine his driving!
Readings can go up from the roadside. If you had a drink just before you left the pub and then drove and crashed say 20 mins later, the alcohol in your body is slowly being absorbed still. By the time you reach custody, your reading can go up quite an amount
The values don't necessarily fall in that time. Depending on when he stopped drinking and if and when he had a meal they can actually also climb. The differences though are hardly big enough to effect a case.
Crazy isn’t it. I bet the roadside machine blew up. Must have been near 5x at roadside
Unless they were still going up 😮. Either way he was in no state to walk let alone drive
I got caught back in 1999 and it crucified me, 22 month ban, DR10 for 11 years on my licence, lost well paying job, lost my relationship and role as a fulltime father. I despise alcohol now and myself even more for letting it ruin my life and most importantly how easily I could of ruined someone else's.
We are human and you made a mistake.
What js impressive is how much you learned from it and how much you have changed. Dont beat yourself up thinking of the old you, just focus on the new positive you.well done for making that change.
So sorry to hear this . I hope your life is back on track now .
Not gonna sugarcoat it - what you did was sickening. However, you learned from it, so don't despise yourself.
How did it lead to you losing your job?
@@kxjx A lot of jobs require a driving licence and many companies need it to be clean but allowances are made for 3 points for speeding (or similar), having a DR10 on your licence just about stops you getting any job that requires a licence.....
Nothing more annoying than once they get the test results they start crying about what 'they' will lose and not bothered about the damage and death they cause. Disgusting.
Really hope Durham keep these videos coming the only way to get through.
Please keep posting these until it sinks in with every single person. If they agree, maybe post an interview with someone who's lost someone to drink driving?
This video doesnt make me think 'i wont drink and drive' it makes me think, the police officers love the feeling of telling someone off and feeling morally superior, with their silly quips. Seeing someone in a cell does nothing for me, seeing the consequences of unrelated people stops people drink driving.
Sadly it will never sink in because the people never do anything wrong
That's exactly the problem then and I hope to go you don't drink and then get behind the wheel.
You are thinking backwards saying the police are enjoying telling people.off and being morally superior. Well yea, 1 they clearly enjoy their job and 2 the people in the video who drank and drove clearly need telling off and have a bit of a moral compass pointed at them.
@@Shadowknightneo The police are nothing to do with morals, they uphold the law, thats it. The attitudes can be dropped.
@@MrHennoGarviemost of them do it for a power trip. They love an easy arrest as well. Pedos walk the streets while traffic units drive around pubs in a circle.
I have a simple rule when driving...zero alcohol, its not that difficult and its served me well over the last 30 odd years of driving.
Same!
That is what the law should be. No drink or drugs, no driving if you have such restricted thought process, reaction times or physical ability to control a vehicle to a safe standard.
That would get lots off the road.
Driving Examiners need to be held responsible if they pass people that are unfit, or drivers passed commit multiple offences in two years after being passed. It might make them more responsible.
100%, it baffles me there is still a legal limit, it should be 0. What I find shocking the amount of people who know me, like really, really well, and fully know that I never drink if I am driving yet they still say oh come on you can have one. No thank you.
100% agree, im usually the designated driver, then a mate will say "youl be okay to have one or 2" my reply is always "well youl be ok to walk home then" 😂

I have never driven drunk, and never would, but these videos are an excellent deterrent.
I was lucky, I was stopped on suspicion and found just over the limit without having caused any damage. It cost me a heavy fine and I was banned for 6 months, nothing more glad to say. But it taught me a lesson. I now never drink if I'm driving and never drive if I've been drinking.
My Dad's boss killed a pregnant 19yo girl when drink driving 30 years ago - I've never forgotten it - but I've definitely driven home the morning after a heavy session a few times and not felt quite right. Brilliant video! I just can't believe people still do it, but they obviously do! Well done, Durham Police.
A long outstanding problem with the Law on Drink Driving is that there is a permissable level based around 2 pints of Beer, it was set in the 1960's in order to start the change towards stopping drink driving and has not changed since. The level is high enough to give a false sense to drivers that they can have a pint or two and still drive.
It is long past the time to reduce that limit to near zero, to clearly signal that drinking alcohol and driving should never mix. (Zero would not actually be fair for various reasons due to the way the body works)
Agree this is the policy in Australia and elsewhere. There could also be more convenient access to public breathalyzers in pubs etc so people could check before leaving.
sorry you just said "think they can have a pint or two" HUGE difference between 1 pint and 2 pints, let's be honest. If you have a pint and stay for a while and you've eaten then I can't see why you'd be over the limit but 2 pints is much more of a gamble and not worth it
But I get your point, I went on a date with a Russian girl who was really concerned when I ordered 1 pint at the start of the night, she said in Russia the limit is basically 0 so you can't even have a pint
@@5uper5kill3rz There are differences nor only between one pint and two , but also between 'pints' of beer. Let alone Wines, Spirits and even desserts made with an alcoholic content. Your point about the 'gamble' between on or two pints misses the dilema of may drivers in that there is no simple 'limit' for them to act upon. Add in the differences on Sex, build, health and food taken and accurate prediction is impossible.
I have taken drivers to court in the past who have stuck to 'only a pint , but had ignored a welcoming sherry, ' but have crashed cars and when tested were over the limit.
When self testing as part of the calibration exercise of a Intoximeter machine one day I returned a reading of 1 even though I had not had an alcoholic drink for over a week, It turned out that the Trifle my wife had served with my evening meal before work had contained a dash of sherry !
It is why I fully support a very low limit , less than 5, rather than zero, to cover the ocassional mistaken and unintentional intake of alcohol from food.
1:58 that woman has a horrible sense of entitlement!
Also cry me a river with all those using the 'I'll lose my job' excuse. If it meant that much to you, you wouldn't drink and drive would you!
I'm not sure I would lose my job, but I'd lose my mind, would have to get 2 or 3 busses and spend hours travelling, not to mention 0 freedom to visit friends and family, would be awful, not to mention I'm paying over £300 a month in car finance
That guy who's vomited over himself claiming he's done nothing wrong, along with the woman's realisation that "My car's gone, job's gone, life's gone" says only half the story.
The rest of the story is when there's a knock on someone's door from one or two police officers with some terrible news about one or more loved ones!
I'm a HGV driver. My licence is my car, wife's car, house, everything. I don't touch a drop within 24 hours of a shift. It's simply too valuable to lose.
These should be on TV every day.
This is what Pro-active policing is all about. Some people so no consideration as to how their choices could impact the lives of others. Regardless of the Summer and Christmas drink drive campaigns folks never learn and they don’t think of the potential consequences when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.
I love Durhams videos.
The drink drivè videos are really needed
I've been riding motorbikes in the UK for 41 years and I'm proud to say I've never drunk-driven. Most of these people really don't give a s&%t about the potential damage they could cause because of their actions. They all deserve to lose their licences forever.
Excellent work Durham police .. keep it up
Excellent hard hitting videos, the utter selfishness and denial of these drivers is staggering.
This should be shown in every secondary school to educate!
People are happy spend £50-100 a night on drinks but not a tenner for a cab home
Drink drivers always seem to believe that they’re not criminals and are a cut above other drug abusers. Can’t see it meself.
"I wouldn't have hurt anyone" says every drink driver ever!
Please put this footage on TV. With all the crap that's on mainstream television, surely something like this is more important?
Should be an advert on TV in its own right.
Amazing how they think they’ve doing nothing wrong and play victim 🤷♂️
I've been drunk in charge once. But it was on private land as part of a demonstration organised by the Police to show the effects of drinking on driving (it was also Durham Police, but about 50 years ago). Six of us had to drive a car round a course with various areas to reverse into. We were timed and then each was given a pint of lemonade with from zero to 5 shots of vodka in it. After 20 minutes, we repeated the course. I felt absolutely fine, but took over 30s longer to do the course and demolished one of the obstacles. That was with 4 single vodkas in me, so probably about on the legal limit.
Tbf, if i lived in Durham, i would probably drink every single day
Well put together video. This should be a TV advert as it really hits home. People need to take life a bit more seriously. As for the mother with children in the car, the mind boggles.
these should be used as adverts on tv
Put these on mainstream TV
To get into a car drunk or drugged up and have kids in the car is a significant miscalculation of judgement.
I've not spoken or had any interaction with my family for 15 years due to drink driving. I'd "only" had a glass and half of champagne at a party before I totally refused to drive my sister 12 miles home. Apparently that wasn't acceptable and I was told I "wasn't over the limit" and "perfectly fine" to drive. Who was right in this scenario, me or them?
You were probably under the limit on that amount but, as it's your licence, it's your decision. You could have asked them if, had you driven and been caught and banned possibly losing your job, would they agree to pay your mortgage or rent and any other bills?
i think you made the right decision. fuck them. (i don't mean literally, i mean in terms of ignoring their requests) they were harassing you.

Anyone that’s selfish enough to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while over the limit deserves everything they get….and should be banned for life..!!!
I like a drink, and I like a good drive...but NEVER together!
The scary part is the way some of these people don't believe they have done anything wrong, the message just isn't getting through
I don't know what the laws are in Durham but in Arizona a first DUI will cost at least $10,000 and a minimum 24 hours in county jail.
Britain is a soft touch, in Germany 0.3 BAC cost me $5000 where I could have had the optional $1000 or a month in gaol and I couldn't drive a car for 12 months, that was for riding a bicycle drunk, I would never drive a car drunk.
Here in Durham UK ... The penalty normally depends on how much you were over the legal limit ...The penalty gets more harsh the more you are over the legal limit. Between 80mcg/100ml and 112mcg/100ml - A recommended Band A fine of up to £2,500; a minimum three-year license endorsement. This means you can no longer drive a car on ANY public highway, Added to the mix when you get your driver's license back the insurance premium will quadruple in price.. So if you paid £400 GBP for a year's motor insurance before you got caught doing a DUI ... You can expect to pay £1600 GBP for a year's car insurance when you get your license back in 3 Years.
The penalty for drinking alcohol and driving a car on a public road is harsh.... So it should be.
Kind regards Brian
To my shame I’ve been done 3 times ( many ,many years ago) I was a dangerous fool , nowadays I’ve a clean license for over 30 years, I hate drink drivers
I think what we need is the legal limit to be 0 not 35. The problem is that once people have drink or two their judgement starts to go and they have more.
True that. I moved to Scotland 10 years ago and the limit here is so low that it isn't even worth having a shandy. To be honest, it isn't even tempting because it's so cut and dry. In England over Christmas, I had half a shandy (hopefully that was the lemonade part) with dinner before driving a short distance home. It was fine and I'm sure I'd have blown under, but I wouldn't have done it in Scotland. The limit in England - and everywhere else - should be in line with Scotland's to reduce temptation. I would say absolute 0, but then everyone who drinks has driven the next day and had that element of doubt at first. Illegal drugs on the other hand should be an automatic ban.
Not possible.
‘Can I get my phone as I’ve got to pick my child up’, while you’re over the legal limit! Holy shit!
This should be put on during the ad break for coronation st
