By the end of the run, I had mostly accepted that it requires a line of sight, pat on the back, pep talk, cup of coffee, and collection of your broken dreams to get out of bed. Nearly melee range is preferable, which is great for all of the enemies hitting so hard. The worst part, is that it refusing to attack is annoying, but it made such a small impact on my DPS that I couldn't always even tell. Which is to say that my total damage wasn't zero, but often felt like it. In the literal sense, it's better than nothing, but only marginally so.
The funniest thing about this is Demiliches in tabletop are supposed to be even stronger than normal Liches when it comes to damage output because they gave up everything that could make them remotely human to focus it all on sheer magical might. And here's Xanax the Mighty over here literally spitting on people.
I've read conflicting notes about them. From what I've read, they could be malnourished and grow weaker, losing a part of themselves, but remaining incredibly dangerous. Alternatively, I've read that some take on the form volentarily transcending even the need for a phylactery. There's also the missing information regarding what all is required for the potion that kills them to transcend mortality. The most consistent thing about them is always of course that they're terrifyingly powerful beings. Unless they're voiced by Arin Hanson, I guess.
Wonderlands, the borderlands game with the tightest combat and here we are doing none of it ourselves. I love it. You dont even upgrade your demi lich, marvelous. I'm at where youre fighting dryl heart is water and i cant wait for you to get stat checked by heart is lightning. Exquisite. You are so committed to having no fun it is beautiful
I liked the writing of Tiny Tina’s cause it felt like a campaign created by a lonely kid who misses her friends. The plot didn’t have to be amazing as (to me) it was more about Tina working through her own issues via the game, and I thought that they nailed that aspect of it.
The greatest moment in the entire series is blowing up the ocean. It's not about a favourite game, or loving new vs old just that blowing up the ocean is the best, most borderlands moment Also your commentary of just talking about anything else but the game cause there's nothing better to do while waiting for the lich to fight is hilarious
As a fan fiction reader, thank you for your words. The amount of times that I had to defend myself for doing something that hurt nobody and made me happy is ridiculous; it’s nice to hear that some ppl outside of fan fiction don’t think that way.
I often watch borderlands challenge runs from many different creators but no other creator makes me more confident and happy along the way. The life lessons are very much appreciated.
I have been watching a lot of Borderlands challenges in the background while grinding Borderlands myself, and the sudden deep topics and conversations hit me like a freight train 😂 Love the video though man, keep it up!
Wait.. if the spell that buffs the lich does not directly damage enemies I don't see any reason why you couldn't have used such spells and items from the get go? I can't even imagine the pain you went through doing this for our entertainment so I thank you for doing it!!
Thank you for watching it! Glad to be of service! I tend to be pretty restrictive with how I structure my runs. I figured I might have to use spells at some point, so it was nice to have in my back pocket, but it still felt like admitting defeat. I really wanted to get through without having to resort to it, but... The good majority of the game can be handled with the little chips of damage that it outputs. I can't really recommend it, but it does work.
It definitely fits the design space of giving you a lot of things that are all easy to deal with, but all together to divide your attention. I think the bosses in the game aren't great overall, but The Dragon Lord shines pretty brightly.
the point of DPS checks in most games is to make it so players that are doing something wrong know that something is wrong, they arent necessary in most games or even genres or subgenres but they can sometimes help players differentiate between struggling because of difficulty or because of a fundamental problem with how theyre playing
That's probably fair. A pretty good assessment, actually. With that in mind, my initial thought would be that most experienced players of games would be able to suss that sort of issue out in general play. Similarly, tutorials are often reguarded as an inconvenience. Of course, there's really no way of knowing if it's someone's first game, or if they just need a bit more help to get the intended experience, so it probably is unfair for me to be too upset about it. I think a counter point would be with regards to it potentially making the game less accessible to those that run into it without putting things together. At that point, they could be stuck entirely or driven away. I still don't think I'm a fan, but that's definitely an insightful perspective. Helps to at least appreciate them as a way of guiding players more subtly.
@@SpuddyCube To expand on both of your comments. DPS checks in wonderlands feel like they fall into the "unnecessary" category more than not. You are unable to grind to over level against a difficult opponent, so your only course of action is to use a weapon of sufficient damage output and type or reevaluate your build. Here's why neither of these is good. Using stronger weapons is a given, if that needs to be forced on a player then there are bigger fundamental issues. Using the correct damage type for the health bar needs to be tutorialized better if you think that will be an issue later. This is technically the FIFTH borderlands game, so most people will have figured it out by now, and if this is somehow your first, the damage type effectiveness is on every stat card anyway. In other words, if they don't get it already then running into a brick wall of a boss won't make them figure it out. Secondly, if they are forced to reevaluate their build then you end up forcing people into the same "meta" skills, weapons, and builds. This is a phenomenon that all borderlands games already suffer from heavily with their endgames being basically impossible except for a select few specific builds. And not being able to over-level also fights against you because in the course of trying to get better gear you may level up and raise the difficulty of an already imposing enemy. For instance, if your ward was already barely hanging on and you had to go farm a new weapon, now you need a new ward, and now the boss is three levels higher than when you last encountered them. And those three skill points you got along the way only go so far, especially if you're already the type of person a DPS check was supposed to "help".
Nah, it's just a topic that I'm really passionate about. The world is a nicer place to be when more people in it are happy and healthy. I'm also passionate about tabletop games and a lot of the dynamics that go into them. There's a pretty high crossover when it comes to relationships with the players. Healthy friendships n whatnot.
A recommendation I'd make for almost any companion run is using the dlc character as a second class cause it's "companion" is a summon turret. So you don't have to have it out and can still get some good companion status dps buffs
While I was originally theory crafting the build, I found that Stabbomancer had more support, but the uhh... crit buffs were really underwhelming. I could see Blightcaller potentially working a lot better at least with the mushroom companion.
I have assassin's Creed black flag to thank for learning some of the sea shanties. Drunken sailor is the one I remember the most, but there's alot that I genuinely enjoyed. Awesome game too.
It was really cool to see them do something different with the series. I haven't played any of them in a good few years, but all the same. It's the game that has me singing Leave Her Johnny to this day.
when i played the credits were like right before the actual end of the story with the dragonlord and were 30+ minutes and unskippable so i kinda stopped caring about it out of frustration. did enjoy it before that tho.
That sounds... dreadful. It's at least in a much better state now, and maybe worth revisiting. I personally love companion classes, so I'm really excited by the game as a whole.
On ps4 you can hold the left analog stick down to speed it up. Sadly I didn't figure this out until over 20 minutes have passed. I didn't appreciate having to wait for it to end. They're credits. I can look at them whenever I want through a menu. Don't make em mandatory when they're that damn long ;-;
@@SpuddyCube I've finished the game, currently at chaos level 40. I'm a spell shot* with the graveborn as the 2nd skill. Pretty much every attack I do is a critical attack, and every spell I do regens a decent % of my health and shield so it's pretty rare for me to go down. Also any gun kill I get has a 16ish% chance to reset all spell cool downs. Makes em so spammable haha.
First off, holy cow your videos are amazing. I’ve loved every second of each one I’ve watched. You bring something unique to the challenge run side of UA-cam in how you write your scripts. That being said if you want some simpler quicker videos to put out you should definitely do some fallout new Vegas runs. They’re popular rn and fonv in particular kind of allows you free reign to play it how you want to. Either way keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! That's really nice to hear! I've considered the series, but I also feel like Nerbit has pretty solid coverage of the franchise all on his own. I hadn't even realized to what extent. As of the time of writing this, he apparently has seventy five Fallout videos. I suppose that it's possible that I could find something, but the man is on a mission.
@@SpuddyCube he has done a lot of the stuff, but hearing your unique twist on similar concepts wouldn’t be a bad thing. If you did what you did for the zero borderlands 2 video and wrote the character a story arc I feel it would be unique to you even if the concepts been proven before. Just a suggestion though, I know whatever you post next will be as fantastic or better than what I’ve watched so far!
I really expexted you to actaully use the perks/spells. Not to damage but to atleast use the kill skills on spell cast / trigger the hellblast from the lich. Are.... are you okay? Im worried .... and scared.
After playing through the whole game. I kinda really liked the writing of this one to be honest. Its no where near BL2 Mind you but its better than BL3 and the whole shoehorning villain thing was really cool considering he had always been the hero and this was probably his first time actually leaning into the idea of being a villain after dying countless times.
I would argue that it's fairly usable, especially given that you only have two trees to build into. It'd be nice to be able to use more than one capstone, but it's not far off of the build philosophy of the previous games. It's just scaled down a bit. My bigger issue with it is how synergies do and don't work between classes, and you don't really have a good way to see/test it until after the game is already over. Otherwise, you're limited to things like third party information.
Maybe a slightly more fun version of this, at least after you get to multiclass is with spore warden. Lots of pet buffs that work really well with grave born but you'll also have the mushroom
Look I really like this game and while I do think that the knight mare is not a good fight it feels unfair to compare the lateral sword swing as unavoidable damage since in a normal playthrough killing the mobs that surround the boss is normally extremely easy so the fact they can force you to stand up is not really a problem. Otherwise good vid I'll keep watching!
Honestly, that's fair. I don't think I had really considered it well at the time. There is still the issue of her projectiles, but I think you can avoid them by standing further back. I think it's more than likely that I've undersold the fight.
I probably would have just said "companions" rather than just the one. so you could take the mushroom class that has a lot of passives for companions. and ya know. second companion, that will revive you.
Ahh, who needs sanity? As slow and painful as it was, it was also fun in its own right. It does help that I've been wanting to get around to playing it for ages.
I dont mind tina regressing a bit especially when she's reusing a character she made and played with Roland she's excited to play the game she loves again but she's doing it with people she doesnt really know and with a character that reminds her of the fight she had with her father figure that she was never able to resolve before he died its sad and tragic and adds a lot of weight to all the cheesy lines and callbacks that likely came from roland first I really wouldve loved to see wonderlands more developed and its frustrating that it wasnt cause you can see the shadow of an idea that was shot down or cut in the name of saving money or time in almost every boss fight in the game, which makes it all the more enraging that it turned out the way it did despite being fun and loveable it could have and deserved to be so much better but Randy overworked his employees and forced them to work on two games at once, probably even three if the timeline for borderlands 3 and wonderlands overlapped during development and all that resluted from it was worse games that you know and feel could be so much better and it doesnt make me hopeful for borderlands 4
You sound like you need to shoot a real gun. You also sound like you need to rag more on bl3. So how about bl3 with only in-game mail? You start with only novelty items, can only ever use a single shield but get 4 different manufacturers to choose between eventually. Probably need to restrict action skills and vehicles to some degree because of how strong they are but ill leave that to you
Honestly... That sounds like a lot of fun. I really like that idea. I'll be adding it to my list to tackle, as long as it hasn't already been covered. Thank you for the suggestion!
Couldve used a quick loading spell that does no dmg like a slowing sigil spell or some other sigil while far from mobs itll cause hellish rebuke to proc again 20% of the time
the level scaling not only made me feel like everything i did was meaningless cause I wasn't feeling any progression.... but the opposite! I felt I was REGRESSING the more I tried to proceed! cause the damage and health from enemies scale linearly, while yours as a player doesn't really do so... another thing I hated is that... it doesn't feel like a lootershooter anymore..... cause I found myself NEVER LOOTING or farming for loot... cause the odds to drop anything are ABYSMAL... it's the lowest in the entire franchise by a LOT and there isn't a dedicated drop for each boss, so it's just... random... unsatisfying... the SHOP is where I got ALL my gear... if I ever got any legendary drop it came from the SHOP... and I HATE IT SO MUCH! it doesn't even make sense with the setting, what kind of DM wouldn't reward their players with magic loot after a cool boss?? instead just having them buying them from vendors...
The Wyvern is definitely better suited for the sort of run, but I also know it has been done. The mushroom on the other hand... I know that it does more damage than the Demi lich. Its ranged attacks don't track though, and I'm not sure how well it stays alive. It does also have a different damage type that has a lot more potential for synergies. It's one I would love to try!
You shoudlve used spells so it woudlve used its blast, but just never hit any enemies with it. The blast is the main source of damage from it. This also shows how AI in every borderlands ghame has always sucked. Flak pets, iron cub, Deathtrap, Wolf and Sanit, the pets in wonderlands. Gearbox cant just make a good AI worth anything
As much as I like your content and respect your opinion, I dont think I can agree with your takes on this games difficulty and so on. If you can beat a games hardest difficulty with what is clearly a build only someone actively trying to make something bad would be able to come up with then the game is not in my opinion created correctly. All playstyles should be respected and equally viable, but what you were doing was not a play style. It was a self imposed challenge and shouldn't really count as one. What you ended up doing to keep moving foreword with the game when you used a gun for the shields, spells to buff you companion, and so on. Those are good things. The game should not let you beat it without gaining a passable knowledge of how to play it. Using a weapon and a skill integral to the game from the very start are things the game expects you to do. Do you have to? No of course not, does it make the game easier and alot less painfull yes, as it was designed to. Lastly, damage checks. Are they lazy? Yes. Are there better ways to make a boss fight? Yes. Are they as bad as you said? No I dont think so. The fact that you were able to pass it by using a random gun and no further build investment beyond a few action skill uses to heal should indicate that it was barely a problem. All of this is my opinion and anyone who reads this is welcome to disagree. I love your content and will of course continue to watch it regardless of my own personal gripes about gaming philosophy XD
I think there's something to be said about the accessibility of games when looking at exactly that though. It's absolutely a minority of the player base, but for some people, this was quite possibly their first game. I absolutely wouldn't consider it to be difficult or anything, but it's really hard to say what lessons they will/won't learn as they go through. I personally suck at The Binding of Isaac, but when I played it, I knew it inside and out, so while my technical skill was lacking, I was still able to get through. Conversely, the Dragon Lord fight was pretty much purely a continuous performance of placement, dodging, and pattern recognition. With Dry'l, no amount of player ability can overcome it without the numbers to back it. I think DPS checks are more often than not just... cheap. I think people will generally agree that Dark Souls is hard, but it can be done with nearly any method you'd like if you've got the patience to make it happen. The big exception there being the Four Kings. Possible doesn't necessarily mean easy. I personally enjoy playing games. Easy, hard, ridiculous with a splash of really weird challenge. I just enjoy games. I know people that like them in theory, but get stopped up by one or both of those major factors. At the end of the day, they should be an enjoyable experience. I know that not every game will be accessible to every person, but DPS checks in particular feel more impassible. I could see it working as a side boss. An end game boss. But a story one? I dunno. I really don't think it'll trip up the average player all that much, but my main concern there is for the below average. I don't think it makes the game bad, mind you. I just think it could have been handled better in that regard. Granted, I don't have a perfect handle of the numbers involved there. At least for an initial playthrough, it probably hasn't hurt the experience of many folks, but it's where my mind clearly went on my first go.
@@SpuddyCube oh for sure, dps checks are cheep, and can definitely be a problem. I just feel like in a game with difficulty settings, the kind of player that would struggle as much as you mentioned should recognize that they need to go to a lower difficulty. If they do that and still feel like the game is unbeatable than that's a diferant beast, and might indicate that the game was not created in a very accessible way. Dark souls games were a good example, you can beat the game with anything if you put in the work, there are no real dps checks and no time limit. That said, dark souls games dont have difficulty settings. I guess I just expect the player to be able to grow and learn about the game as they play. Getting better and more knowledgeable as they go. That won't be everyone. Some people don't enjoy games enough to put that kind of effort into it. Not every game is for everyone, and I don't feel like that's a bad thing. Trying to make a game perfect for everyone sacrifices things you know. Regardless I appreciate you responding and further explaining your thought process. I am excited for your next video, and I hope you have a good time making it. Much support from a fan. ♡

Love your channel i have shared it with everyone I know
Thank you! I'm glad to hear that you've enjoyed it enough to share around!
"Punchfather"
I probably would have just said "companions" rather than just the one. so you could take the mushroom class that has a lot of passives for companions. and ya know. second companion, that will revive you.
That's fair, but then how would I eventually compare the two side by side? One day I'd like to see how well the mushroom does on its own.
@SpuddyCube considering how soul crushing this was I'd hope you'd have started with that run just as a proof of concept for your own sanity
Ahh, who needs sanity? As slow and painful as it was, it was also fun in its own right. It does help that I've been wanting to get around to playing it for ages.
@SpuddyCube maybe next run could be a spell damage only run or something slightly less painful
Lessgooooo
Thank u for the video man 💪🗿👍
Happy to provide! Thank you for watching it!
I dont mind tina regressing a bit especially when she's reusing a character she made and played with Roland she's excited to play the game she loves again but she's doing it with people she doesnt really know and with a character that reminds her of the fight she had with her father figure that she was never able to resolve before he died its sad and tragic and adds a lot of weight to all the cheesy lines and callbacks that likely came from roland first
I really wouldve loved to see wonderlands more developed and its frustrating that it wasnt cause you can see the shadow of an idea that was shot down or cut in the name of saving money or time in almost every boss fight in the game, which makes it all the more enraging that it turned out the way it did despite being fun and loveable it could have and deserved to be so much better but Randy overworked his employees and forced them to work on two games at once, probably even three if the timeline for borderlands 3 and wonderlands overlapped during development and all that resluted from it was worse games that you know and feel could be so much better and it doesnt make me hopeful for borderlands 4
Bro wonderlands with melee and action skill only is so fun
Should do both companions it’s fun (this is a joke it’s still hell)
I dunno, that eventual Mushroom run still sounds pretty fun...
I wish you some luck then
You sound like you need to shoot a real gun.
Lol plus it's dark magic 😂. Pain
Dark magic that doesn't even give you health back! It only helps the Lich!
@@SpuddyCube a total scam lol
Couldve used a quick loading spell that does no dmg like a slowing sigil spell or some other sigil while far from mobs itll cause hellish rebuke to proc again 20% of the time
True, but my hope was to do as much as possible without casting if I could help it.
the level scaling not only made me feel like everything i did was meaningless cause I wasn't feeling any progression.... but the opposite! I felt I was REGRESSING the more I tried to proceed! cause the damage and health from enemies scale linearly, while yours as a player doesn't really do so...
another thing I hated is that... it doesn't feel like a lootershooter anymore..... cause I found myself NEVER LOOTING or farming for loot... cause the odds to drop anything are ABYSMAL... it's the lowest in the entire franchise by a LOT and there isn't a dedicated drop for each boss, so it's just... random... unsatisfying... the SHOP is where I got ALL my gear... if I ever got any legendary drop it came from the SHOP... and I HATE IT SO MUCH!
it doesn't even make sense with the setting, what kind of DM wouldn't reward their players with magic loot after a cool boss?? instead just having them buying them from vendors...
now just wyvern and the shroom to go... i think they get more dmg in their skill trees tho
@@SpuddyCube get 2 mates and everyone runs 1 of the companions?
Ahh, the hardest challenge of all. Getting a group together to play a game on a somewhat consistent basis.
@@SpuddyCube exactly, now allow me to quote a certain unlimited power man: "dew it!"
"I'm too weak."
The mushroom is not a better companion take it from my experience it is worse
Okay, it may be worse from a technical standpoint... but it could be even more fun!
I only believe in 12.5% of the bible. I'm an eighth theist
That whole "enemies scale up to you but not down to you" is pretty bullshit
Yeah, it's a... really strange choice to say the least.
