Except for tape because I can’t be bothered. That sounds like me too :P I like a good wine red on my palette for florals… And also lots of greens. Olive green has grown a lot on me and I want one on every of my palette 😅
It has never occurred to me to mix my own colour with tube paints and put them in a pan, seems so obvious now I've seen you doing this! My favourite convenience colours are deep pinks, yes I could mix them but they are so pretty and deserve to be bought :)
I love Rosa Gallery paints. Great to see your convenient mixes. Thanks for sharing your process. You share so much indepth yet easy to follow and understand the process.
Beautiful swatches, combining both drawing and painting. I am lazy and impatient😱🤭 I use small flower or leaves stamps and waterproof archival ink and paint on top. I liked the many experiments; playing without the pressure of an art work helps getting to know the paints better. Thanks!
Thank you for watching and your kind words Berolina! 😂😂😂 I do think it’s important to make swatching work for you - and if that’s with stamps or a single line with a biro, that is equally fine!! You’re more than welcome ❤️❤️❤️ I hope you’re well ❤️
Very good for it's price and good for starters to practice their color theory, as well as expressing some creative freedom, I particularly like the reds and blues. Thank you for upload, pretty hair lady 😊😊
Fantastic video, I love the way you do your swatching and study of how the pigments work! I don't have a go to convenience color. So that I would learn how to mix my own colors, I didn't buy any greens or oranges in my Roman Szmal pallette. I am really having fun coming up with different greens to use! I love the idea of mixing some favorite tube colors and make my own colors, that sounds like fun too! 🖌️🎨
I really like the process of mixing my own colours, but greens are definitely my favourite convenience mixes, especially the natural looking ones! I really like the colours you chose for your palette. That Payne's Grey was absolutely stunning!
Dang gurl!!! Not only did you swatch your colors, you put extra TLC into coming up with different leaf patterns for every one of those colors! I'd just take the lazy artist way out and duplicate the same pattern to swatch 😂!!! That's what makes you remarkable!!! I think it's my OCD, repeating the pattern, making everything matchy-matchy. I must be a country rabbit!!! Did you get the reference? Any who, that sheet rocks! I think I love it better than a repeated pattern. Just as every color is its own, why shouldn't it have a different pattern!? I love that!!! I think it goes back to my high school days... Anytime I had different color markers or pens, I'd have to test it out by writing the same phrase in Thai... I don't remember the phrase I chose... But I just remember writing the same thing over and over in each of the different colors! I never thought it was OCD at the time! My cousin would tell me my organization skills were very AR. I just thought I was being Type A. I guess we now know why it's called Type A... For Type AR!!!😂. Just kidding😂. Well friend, I hope you have a blessed weekend!
Oh wow that’s awesome how you made the Sap Green color. I have got to remember that recipe mix of bright yellow, Ultramarine Blue, & Burnt Umber combination. Definitely a lot of great tips with this wonderful informational video. Thanks for sharing this with us. ❤
PS. You can also mix reds into greens to mute down some greens. Youbalsonhave enough yellows and blues to create hundreds of interesting greens too. This palette has many possibilities!
Sap Green is definitely one of my favorites. I tend to like the golden greens and earthy ones. It’s what I’ve noticed. Will swatch my Viridian & Phthalo greens with the browns to see what kind of shades I get.
I got so excited as soon as I saw you use that Cobalt Turquoise. I picked up several different Rosa Gallery sets on Black Friday and just now got around to swatching the first one, the Modern set. Kimberly Crick has a video where she mixes Viridian Green PG 18, with Quinacridone Magenta PR 122 to get a crazy dusky purple that granulats. So... the first thing I did was try it out with the Cobalt Turquoise in this set! It is a Wild duochrome purple 💜 Then I tried the Magenta Rose PR 122, with the 'Turquoise' PG 15:3, PG 7, as the color is closer to Veridian and it makes a wonderful purple 💜. After that I tried a tip I got from Diane Antone about mixing Black and Lemon Yellow to get Green using the 'Neutral' Black in this set. It's a really lovely darker green that has a glow. 😊 I first tried it with both the 'Black' and the 'Flagstone' from my Doodle Hog watercolor set (probably Superior paints) and the 'true black' worked well with all of the yellow colors... lemon, cadmium deep, new gamboge and even the Yellow Ocher. TBF, none of the paints in the set have any pigment information... but it does have two blacks, a granulating black and a fine black called Flagstone. I had a harder time getting good greens with the Rosa galleries cadmium yellows and yellow ocher... but I'm sure some of that was user error as I was trying to mix on the paper to get effects. Anyway, happy mixing, I hope you enjoy these little recipes. Cheers ❤
Currently I have five palettes on rotation. They have some overlapping colors but they have unique colors too. I can’t think of a convenience color I must have in each palette! One convenience color I use is A. Gallo olive green deep (PB29, PY154, PY110) it granulates and makes wonderful backgrounds with little effort. Fun video, thank you!
My favorite convenience colors are different browns, grays, and greens. I know how to mix my own, but I don't always want to spend time doing it. I highly HIGHLY recommend everyone try a limited palette as a way to learn what one's colors can make. I have loads of fun experimenting whenever I get a new color. I mix it with my other colors to see what I can get. Also, I recommend trying out different textures with a new color to see what happens, for example, if I put salt on top. 😍
I have every single pigment Rosa’s galleries, I just added a few of their convenience colors and 2 White knights single pigments that Rosa’s didn’t have. I have other palettes that are either other brands or handmade paints I either bought or mulled myself…but I keep returning to Rosa’s. In fact my bestie just texted me a little while ago, cussing me out because she just bought some more for herself. 😂 She’s a retired art professor, but never did much watercolor until, first, I “dragged her into” Chinese Traditional Painting…then we began playing with mixing the mediums both in materials and techniques..now her studio is full of eastern AND western watercolor supplies. 🥰. But she was just blown away about the quality + price of Rosa’s. I find with my single pigments-I can get any color I need by mixing-and, maybe it’s just me, but they seem more vibrant than their convenience mixes (their turquoise being the best example-I LOVE the range of turquoise-teal I can get with those 2!)
Thank you so much for watching and sharing Elaine!! Lol I get the same reaction from some people that I shared watercolour with 🤣🤣😂😂 it’s hard to go back once you fall in love with it! ❤️❤️❤️
nice video... so, what my palettes can't be without... indigo, burnt siena of some sort, caput mortuum, probably naples yellow reddish, some sort of golden ochre and a nice purple/violet. Skintones/earthtones and purples are my emphasis, as for motifs, I do a lot of nudes "within nature". You are inspiring, y'know?
Great tips to be gleaned from this video! Something I have on my wish list is one of the multi paged Khadi sketchbooks. How freeing to have the space to do all kinds of experiments! A color I always mix into a full pan is a grey with ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.
My issue with Rosa Gallery is that the pigment numbers on their website and even on the in store display didn't match up with what was on the pan label once I opened it at home. It put me off buying any more paints from them because it meant that I would have to check every pan individually for the pigment number.
A convenience mix I don't have yet, but I really want in my pallet is a turquoise that almost looks as bright as the Minki color in the palette you just showed us ... I have the Cotman Turquoise, but it's too much on the dark blue side for my likes. I like mine to be on the brighter green side. I'm also loving Opera Rose/Pink... Otherwise, I'm just pretty much happy with my basic 38 set... I haven't needed any florescent colors yet... That would probably be the other convenience mixes I'd want... And stronger glitzy metallics... If I could get a chrome in watercolor... But no one's touching that one!!!😂. That's about it!!!
Loved how happy you were when you tested your own green! I was grinning :) Was that the aureoline yellow with UM blue and Burnt Umber? - a gorgeous colour. Thank you for this fab video, your advice is so helpful to beginners. I have just ordered a lot of Rosa Gallery paints for when I arrived in the UK. Mostly I have the colours you have ordered, so looking forwarding to trying them.
Love your tips thank you! I often forget to go to my convince subject when trying out new paints and end up getting intimidated (oops) My must have convenience colours are Olive green by MH and either Imperial purple or Dioxazine purple for shadows
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words Mayniayak! I know the feeling lol and have done that in the past too :P so don't worry, you are not alone - for some it may work but for me, I prefer to try my comfort subject so that I can focus on what is different... the new supply :D x
Although I enjoy mixing colours, if I have a palette with undersea green, sap green and payne’s grey, I feel like I will be able to paint faster. I picked up a couple of Rosa Gallery palettes last year with full pans to give them a try, but I haven’t bought any of their tubes yet.
Thank you for this WONDERFUL video, dear Sketches ❤️ I am so glad I started getting interested in pigments right from the start. I can’t paint worth **** but, I am now quite familiar with my pigments LOL I LOVE the way you swatch and, oh my gosh, both your florals (swoon) and your landscapes (gasp) What a great idea to mix your own colour and put it in a pan in your palette!! I must admit, I share your love of greens and your sap green (my most needed convenience colour) turned out gorgeous! I just cannot get enough of your videos 👏❤️❤️❤️

My palettes absolutely have to have Qor Paynes Gray. I use it for so so many mixes. I have all kinds of brands of tubes in my palettes but I think Qor does that one best and it is forever a fave.
Lovely swatching. I have the color Black Green which is so gorgeous. Looking at your color chart, I think in the future I’m going to try Jade and Olive Green. The Payne’s Grey is so much more blue than I’d expect, but that’s always a guess in my experience.
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words Karlijn! It does vary drastically from brand to brand lol - I have a Payne's grey comparison video you may be interested in: ua-cam.com/video/UbidMm5kzAI/v-deo.html xx

I need to redo all my swatches this way! For one thing, my very extensive swatch book is mixed media, smooth and ugly! lol Also, I love my Rosa G paints, and added a few more to my palette for my birthday in January. I met my first Rosa pan I do not like…their Quin Gold. I guess I got spoiled using the Roman Szmal Quin Gold!
Hey, redoing swatches can be a fun project! Equally, my swatchbook is a true mixture of swatch styles lol. And happy belated birthday, hope you had a blast adding to your paint collection!

I love that standard grey 😂

PB15:3 which is cooler, leans closer to green
