    Brilliant, love a good Watt's speech. Did you use the anamorphic IBIS mode here? I have the Mercury preordered and I'm considering the S5iiX just for it's open gate and anamorphic IBIS

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  Рік тому +3

      Yes I had anamorphic IBIS mode on here. It works well when you just need to run and gun. Naturally you can expect to see some dancing flares, the slightly floaty look you get with IBIS, and a little bit of movement in the roll axis. Personally I would have preferred to have weighted the rig down a little and turned IBIS off, but I only had the lenses for a day or two so didn’t have time to play. Overall though the look is still amazing for such a small setup, and a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Personally I’ve always preferred a non-IBIS organic handheld look, however there’s no denying how handy it is for a small and mobile setup, provided you don’t mind the slight compromise of wiggling flares etc.

    Thanks for this: Question: Regarding supported resolutions when working in anamorphic. The 5.9k full sensor to Ninja is still 16:9 right, so not open gate? Are you enabling anamorphic desqueeze then at the Ninja, instead of the S5iix, or is that enabled from within the S5iix regardless of it not being in a "proper" anamorphic mode? Did you try open gate from within the S5iix, internal recording? Thanks!

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  Рік тому +2

      Yes, I wanted to shoot PR RAW which is 16:9 at 5.9K into the Ninja. It gives you 2.66:1 desqueezed. I turned on 1.5x desqueeze in both the cam menu and on the Ninja too (of course that’s just for monitoring as desqueeze is done in post). I didn’t have time to try internal open gate unfortunately as only had a day or two to actually get hands on due to other commitments. Also would have liked to try them on the GH6 which has dedicated Anamorphic 4:3 open gate mode, but didn’t have a PL m43 adapter to hand. More time needed!

    now in 2023, how do you feel about camera choices... coming form a GH3... is it still worth it to go over to Gh5S or are there other cameras you think one should consider now, like gh6 or Sigma FP, or Black Magic P4K...etc? thanks for sharing what you think is worth considering in 2023!

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  Рік тому +1

      I would consider all of the above, but can't advise you individually which to go for as there's so many factors that come into it, and that will be different for everyone. Budget, hardware you're already invested in, your shooting needs, style, and the kinds of setting you expect to be shooting in. Your best bet is to work out what your priorities are and choose accordingly. As a general rule newer may be better as tech does move with time, but they are all perfectly capable, even in 2023.

    • @SimplicityForGood
      @SimplicityForGood Рік тому

      @@RoweFilms I see... yes, want to go from the digital gh3 style of image to a more cinematic style, but today there are many LUT like Arri Alexa etc. so a bit confusing if I need raw or not... do you think the Black Magic pocket original is still worth it in comparison to the P4K that also got some years on its' neck? someone want to sell me a Og for 485 dollars while another guy want to sell me the P4k 766 US dollars...
      none of them are up to date, but both are Black Magic cameras...
      in perspective to GH5S what do you think disregarding format need or any style of how one shoot, but just talking of the actual value of the hardware in 2023 and forward and what they can do as cameras?

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  Рік тому

      @@SimplicityForGood the original pocket might be pushing it as specs are a bit outdated. The P4K is still decent. There’s a lot more that goes into a ‘cinematic’ image than just the camera. Arguably lenses make more of a difference to the overall feel of an image.

    • @SimplicityForGood
      @SimplicityForGood Рік тому

      @@RoweFilms yes, I looked at some cinema lenses that fit the 4/3 micro format.. I have three lenses from my gh3.. but they are not cinema lenses.. but they are good lenses.. though been thinking if is better to sell everything that is 4/3 micro format now and save up for a full format camera or if it is actually still in 2023 worth to keep the 4/3 micro lenses and get a new camera house to work with them, that is why I considered also those Black Magic cameras... @@RoweFilms I hear terrible things about how soft they are in full frame mode. Any comment on this?

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  Рік тому +1

      @@Nemastic can't say I noticed anything terrible like that mate, no. In FF & wide open, sure they're not the sharpest, softer towards the edges, however that's what I actually loved about them. Plenty sharp enough for me in the centre. My most common complaint with modern glass is so often too sharp and too clinical. So I suppose it's subjective and depends what you're looking for. I'll take the character of these any day.

    • @7thHill112
      @7thHill112 Рік тому

      Lol, that's the point - its designed to give you the results of shooting on vintage anamorphic but in a robust modern housing - that's why they used this lens in The Creator, to match the vintage 75mm Kowa anamorphic - they have a similar look - the barrel distortion, the soft edges are all intentional. You dont buy a lens like this if you want a razor sharp, clinical look. Anyone that says that about the Mercury has missed the point entirely - they don't understand optical engineering - directors and DP's go out of there way to modify lenses or use vintage glass to achieve these qualities @@Nemastic

    • @Nemastic
      @Nemastic Рік тому

      @@7thHill112 I understand all of that and quite appreciate a large amount of character. The problem seems to be you can have two actors facing each other in close proximity and shoot facing their sides one person will be in focus and the other won't. A vintage look is great but a major operational limitation is beyond the... scope of what many working professionals can tolerate when they have a specific shot list to get through. I'm not aware of any other anamorphic lens demonstrating such a lopsided focus plane. It's usually straight or curved not unpredictably mumpy. I really want this set to be great but can't imagine having to shoot around that issue for a decade.
      Perhaps this extreme was limited to an early batch but as of now it's Do Not Buy until someone proves this not to be the case.

      True it isn't ideal when the image flares, however you do have the option to turn IBIS off. Leaving it on allows you to achieve a small and lightweight set up that you can easily run and gun, so it's a compromise that may be acceptable for some and/or in some shooting conditions. For me it's only a bit of an issue during flaring. I didn't have long enough with the lenses but next time I'd like to add some weight to the rig and turn IBIS off.
