- The Panasonic LUMIX GH7 is here, and it is absolutely phenomenal.
For the announcement of this epic camera, I decided to create a short film with a poignant (and timely) message about the power of art and creativity to bring people together in times of conflict and crisis. With only 3 or 4 days to do it, it was tough but I'd wanted to put this piece together for some time. It's my little tribute to both the incredible talent I am blessed to have all around me, as well as a great man from across the pond, whose words couldn't be more apt today, more than 60 years later.
My initial thoughts on the camera - The GH7 produces a truly beautiful image. The footage is genuinely stunning. It performed totally flawlessly during the production of this film and that's pretty much it in a nutshell. Could this be LUMIX’ best filmmaker's camera to date? I think it might be and look forward to getting to know it more.

Shot exclusively on the LUMIX GH7 in ProRes RAW.
A huge, huge thank you to my friends and family that made this happen in such a short amount of time. We managed to plan, shoot, edit, score, and post the piece in just 3 or 4 days, and I have the people around me to thank for that.

Wow! I got chills to where the hairs on my arms and neck stood up watching this from both the message and the impeccable video quality. I would venture to say that if someone ever feels like they've lost their way in life, they probably would feel so uplifted after watching your video. I looked back at my dusty, old Lumix GH2 camera sitting on a bookshelf in my office and smiled with misty eyes afterwards. Thanks, for what you do good sir!

Incredible and inspiring. We all need to encourage creativity in a world where for so much of our existence we are down trodden and believe we are not enough….This video is testament to those principles…. Very powerful!
Spot on Luke. 60+ years after this speech and the same games are still being played. People turned against each other are far easier to control and manipulate. We need to focus on what brings us all together and that's true now more so than ever. JFK clearly saw that. His death was such a loss not only to America, but the entire world.

Good god that was epic. Another masterpiece Tommy! Looking forward to a breakdown/post workflow/BTS of this video ;) Specifically how you got that incredibly creamy background on some of these shots. I'm assuming wide open vintage lenses with a Speedbooster? Anyway, thank you for always proving that its the people behind the camera and not the camera itself that matters most and that M43 is alive and well! Cheers!
Thanks so much mate, really appreciate that. Unfortunately as I put this together in 3-4 days there's no BTS content, however yes you're partly right there. Vintage lenses make a big difference as they give you a look you just can't achieve with modern glass. It's also partly the grade. I used Dehancer Pro for this one to achieve that filmic look. Using film compression of the highlights helps give you that creamy look you describe :)

Thanks very much and yes, he was a special man. A tragic loss to not only America, but the wider world too. Makes you wonder what our societies would look like today if he and his brother weren't taken before their time.
It's so remarkable for you to say that as it truly hits home with me as well. I was a seven year old beach kid when Bobby visited Los Angeles and was assassinated after his speech. The pain, sorrow, and darkness that overwhelmed me when I watched the evening news report of his death was liking nothing I had ever experienced.

Indeed you did! Mostly Canon FD in there with a few shots on the Helios. Speedboosters used were Metabones FD to m43, and Viltrox EF to m43
@@RoweFilms How much crop is there left compared to 35mm?
@@Stefan_Heinrich basically none. Crop factor vs full frame is around 1.4x when using a 0.71x speedbooster. So very similar to S35/APSC

Hello, how are you? I want to ask you about the new Lumixgh7 camera. I have an external recording device that supports 16BIT RAW video, but does the camera accept external RAW recording or is the highest quality in the camera PRORES RAW 12BIT? Honestly, I want 16bit RAW
Yes it outputs RAW over HDMI but it’s 12 bit.

Nice work. The GH7 is an excellent camera. Sadly, I've already seen videos by people who still find something to complain about. All while acknowledging that there ia no such thing as a perfect camera. I shot a feature film with the GH5. And the GH7 is a huge step forward by comparison. Now, I'm wondering do I leave Sony for the S5ii or the GH7. Either camera would make a great choice.
Thanks mate. Tell me about it. I honestly find it completely baffling and pretty tiring. If you're someone that manages to find things to complain about here, with everything this camera offers for a mere £2K, then if you ask me, the camera isn't the problem. Your expectations are.
@@RoweFilms Exactly. Plus, when a new camera comes out, some want (and expect) the new features added to their older camera as if everything can be added with a firmware update. It's like listening to spoiled children cry for ice cream.
@@AllThingsFilm1 yes another thing I’ve never understood. If that were possible to do, there would never be any need for new hardware. Therefore no business, no new tech and no one developing it in the first place. Brands are not charities. Utterly baffling logic.
You DEFINITELY could have made this with the GH5s. If I was Panasonic, I'd give you ALL my cameras to be honest. Interestingly enough, few people like the truth. It's YOU, definitely not the latest cam. I'd love to see you shoot on a Sony A7S ii. I'd definitely understand if you had a contract with Lumix though. Always record breaking work, thank you for sharing.
Thanks very much mate :). Yeh the GH5S is still great, and I still use it. Lovely image. The 5.7K internal RAW is pretty special in the 7 though. They have come on a long way!

Thanks mate. Yes, both FD and EF. They work just fine! For manual lenses that is.

I honestly want to know what's it like when underexposed by several stops? Does the signal get drowned by the noise at -2 or even -3 stops underexposed?
Any reason you'd want to underexpose by several stops? For me that's a big no no on any camera
@@RoweFilms no it's not. CMOS sensors fair much better in the shadows than highlights. I often underexpose for HDR workflow in RAW to preserve the highlight detail and it works wonderfully.
@@shueibdahir I beg to differ especially on a m43 sensor, my approach is the exact opposite. But each to their own
@@RoweFilms that's to avoid noise yes but the problem with LOG is that it's not linear, meaning it's trying to efficiently cram the linear data. Problem with that is overexposing to the upper stops causes the tonal range to become compressed. LOG preverses detail and tonal tange in the midtones and shadows. And like I said modern cameras do quite well in the shadows. The thing is to find the noise floor of you camera and to stay above it. But you cannot keep the image completely noise free.
So ETTR with causes compressed tonal ranges and ETTL gives you best tonal range but with noise. You just gotta pick the one that you can deal with. With the GH7 shooting prores raw i'd happily choose the latter. But yes to each their own

What do you think of the Fujifilm camera X-S20, is it a cinema camera (Prores 12 bit raw) like the Sony FX3?

the film is cool, but the camera seens like a normal gh4, we stoped evolving here.
Thanks! I’d have to disagree however. The footage that comes out of this camera isn’t even remotely comparable to what came out of the GH4, or 5 for that matter. As good as it was for its time. I’ve shot on all of them. GH4 footage doesn’t come close to 5.7K 12 bit RAW footage. Simple as that.
This makes me wanna sell my A7sIII and get the GH7...
