Panasonic cares about its community. Last time I was surprised by an update that wasn't mentioned that brings resolution control via HDMI. A lot of people complained about the lag in previewing on the monitor, but now the problem disappears after switching to 1080 50/60p. Before, the solution was to turn off the sound, but I found that to be an unfortunate solution.
Great vid man. My only request with this camera is RAW recording to either an SSD or internally, even if it had to drop to 4K. That would be unbeatable.
@@ckhicks Ah sorry, my bad!! Raw output is to either Atomos Ninja V for ProresRAW or Blackmagic Video Assist 12G for BRAW! 😅 My brain is too tired and because I was hooking up my USB SSD to both camera and Video Assist I conflated the question... 😂
Great video. If Panasonic is listening please finally release the S1R successor. I’m looking for a higher res hybrid camera. Love my S5IIx just wishing for more MP on the stills side for enlargements.
Love this camera and is my go-to among three other systems. My only issue is the lag time between pressing record and when it actually starts recording. It is at least 2-3 seconds. That needs to be corrected.
Love the s5ii, I agree only the only real downside to the camera is the rolling shutter, that being said I can think of only a handful of shots where I ruined my image due to it. As long as you have some sort of rig or at least a top handle, and aren’t stomping around with an 85, the thing works so damn well. Crop mode reduces readout times by 9 ms from 6k open gate so I just use that if I wanna be lazy and run n gun with a longer focal length
Yeah man. LUMIX. Whatever it lacks, it’s only a matter of time. They don’t have a cinema line to protect. I’m faithfully holding back for this S1H mark 2, (or S2H whatever the hell they call it.) It’ll be a bad mf.
Really considering this camera as my first hybrid as I start doing my own professional work. There’s lots of others but this keeps getting my attention. I need something thats very flexible because idk where my professional ventures will lead which brings ambiguity. Cam, if you were starting over with no gear to start professionally and needed a hybrid what would you pick up? Realistically I’d like to spend $4k max on just the body.
Loving the video specs on this thing, thinking of switching over to the Lumix, but I shoot primarily stills, but would love it for videos, just wondering what your thoughts are on the stills angle?
why you gotta make me wanna upgrade my original s5? ;) I have all that anamorphic support, I have the waveforms and shutter angle, I don't care about autofocus, but open gate... that's appealing to me. I'm fine with all the codecs I already have, and the image quality of my camera is so dope, but open gate... well... I ALMOST have open gate, because I can go into 4:3 in anamorphic mode and not even have to use anamorphic lenses, but... yeah, it's not real open gate, and so... your videos are so good... maybe one day. For now, I'm good with what I have. lol. Great work, though, as always.
I’ve stuck with the OG Lumix S5 and even worked around the setbacks by buying a Ninja V, but after a few months of using this setup, I find external recording to be a bit unreliable. I’ve experienced artifacting/glitches in the footage and complete HDMI dropouts during RAW recording. The S5IIx is on a great sale right now and I’m considering just selling off my whole S5 + Ninja V kit because I feel I can’t fully trust the recording monitor. 🤔
Aweomse video as always. Lumix S5ii has been my A Cam for the pst 6 months and I've become obsessed. Question - (maybe sick to have a video on it) I haven't been able to find a video to help me understand Shutter angle. I came from shutter speed and understand the lower you go the more motion blur you get. Is it the same for shutter angle? Or Does it allow you to keep the motion blur perfect while adjusting it for exposure? Any input on this would be awesome. Thanks!
Dear Blackmagic, at 5:20, I think he's talking to you. And I'm liking Jericho to keep Cam "Colonel Kurtz" Mackey from heading too deep into a desert where a psychedelic deja vu requires film and digital for EVERYTHING....
Well well, looks like cammackey is also taking the american financial hit - i never thought i would see you enjoying prosumer cameras! (contains irony).
Cam off-topic, I have the R5mk2 and it is AMAZING... but its lacking a few bits. Shutter Angle in video mode, anamorphic desqueeze and the ability to shoot opengate like the competition. Maybe they could update the cam via firmware update. DR, Lowlight and RolShut are significantly better than the R5. The autofocus is Sticky even with EF adapted Sigma lenses
I keep having conversations with buddies about all these new cameras. Everyone has their one feature that will get them excited. For me, I have zero interest in new cameras unless they either have full anamorphic support with open gate.. OR actual red raw quality.
@@cammackey try to shoot some fashion or clothing on like F4 or even F8. It looks sometimes terrible when you need a deep focus sharp image. Unfortunately this was a Deal braker for me. Besides this and some strange high Iso grain. Is it a great Camera.
I havent experienced any strange high iso grain either. But yeah I feel like a lot of cameras have morie issues unless they throw in that filter. But personal even with those cameras it’s rarely an issue for me. I’m always trying to use softer lenses cause I’m not a fan of clinical, even for fashion jobs. So I’m not sure how much that has helped me in the past but I’m sure it kills it a little. I think the last time I’ve expierenced moire was with the Canon R5
Hey man you gotta start with what you got! Even if it’s just a phone! If you can learn to make a phone camera look good, you’ll be ready to master any camera!
@@cammackey I have a canon m50 and I know it doesn’t matter what you film on, but I feel like my m50 footage just falls apart the second I try to color it :( I absolutely love editing and color grading but when I film with my m50 it takes the fun out of it because no color can be added😭
There’s def ways to increase the quality!! Over exposure mroe when possible. Try to manipulate your lighting more as well. You’ll learn, even with better image quality, there’s only so much you can save in a mid image. VS trying your best to work with what you got and pushing the limits. Will sky rocket your results!!
I wish that in the LUMIX S5 Mark 3 they have 6K 60FPS open gate. I don't see Nikon, Canon or Sony really pushing open gate. Do you think that will happen?
I know nobody like this type of questions but do you think S5IIX is better than X-H2S for video? Image quality wise. In camera tools are not that important if you use monitor. X-H2s have 4k 120 and real good 4k 60. Dynamic range seems to be similar judging by Geralds videos. I have xt3 and I am thinking about xh2s or s5iis. S5iis mostly for ff sensor.
I had the XH2s. Absolutely loved it. But it’s def noisy, which is fine cause I’m use to running post noise reduction. But personally I’m a fan of anamorphic, and having full frame open gate is just hard to beat. I know a lot of people like to argue about the whole S35 VS full frame.. the fact is, we don’t get to light everything and control every environment. So sometimes full frame just gives us a little more flexibility. And the low light on the S5IIX is great as well. And for me, an external monitor with tools is great… but nothing beats having all of the tools built into the camera cause then you can run any monitor and it doesn’t matter and you can ditch the monitor when you need to and be safe. So I think the simple answer is, if you don’t plan on ever investing into large format lenses (full frame) then stick to the XH2s.
@@cammackey thanks for quick response. You are deff one of my fav creators, every video is like tv doc movie, beautiful. Ff lenses are reason for wanting s5iix, couse cf lenses cant compete with ff. Vintage FDs, Leica R... also anamorphic and cine lenses... especially wide angle lenses. So even if I stick to Fuji I would use speedbooster.
Speedboosters don’t exactly get you the same look. I’ve spoken to a lot of lens designers and a lot of them absolutely hate speedboosters haha. Because it’s disrupting the lens design and basically destroying what the lens was made for. Granted, I could care less. If it works, it works. But they also cause a lot of problems. And a lot of cinema lenses coming out won’t clear them. So I think they’re great but I personally don’t care to use them. I just rather shoot full frame
Def cheaper for multicam setups .Is there an AF animorphic lens for Lumix? You have second to nun color . So blockbuster. Im no pro . Awesome. Thank You
I need an 8K version that can do uncropped 4K60. That's the Achilles heel for mine. I don't know what sensors/processors you would need for open gate 60fps but that is my dream scenario. Might get a Canon R5C just for that.... unless anyone has any other advice?
HELLO 👋 If anyone could give me some ideas as to which lenses to buy… I don’t have any gear yet but I am planning on buying a s5iix and want to have 2 or 3 lens to start with. I want one anamorphic, one zoom and probably one prime. My budget is limited considering I need to buy memory cards, nd filters, etc… What would be your recommendation? Thanks 🤜🤛
Gosh man, you jumped from the Red Komodo to Canon with the R5c, then to Sony with the Fx6, now you on Panasonic with the S5iix... my guess Sony don't have false color or shutter angle.. I got the Canon R5c.. and in my review I compare bragging rights with it vs. the Panasonic S5IIx.. I like the Panasonic s5iix and it has the most beatable price however the compromises it has WHICH THERE ARE COMPROMISES or CRIPPLED that the Canon R5c excell as the more expensive and justified cinema camera in the mirrorless body under $5000. and now on sale for $3600.
R5c got in my way multiple times. Horrible battery life. Horrible hybrid performance. Limited lens selection. After all of that.. I now just use whatever I need. I don’t recommend any invest into canon cause they have shown time after time, they care about themselves and not their customers. Every other brands doesn’t pull the 💩 that they do. Most importantly for me, they don’t have open gate and their dynamic range doesn’t hold up in comparison.
@cammackey respect the use of any camera that is a good cinema camera.. and it's good for experience to be well rounded in many and not just one manufacturer! Yes the r5c dynamic in clog3 capped at 13.6~ is my ONLY fret.. Canon / Sony / Panasonic / Black Magic each have great cinema cameras with Sony and Canon leading.. Black magic is truelly and under rated awesome cinema camera company. But end of the day, you make good youtube bts content. Appreciate it.
Great, but how can you use the expression "without compromises" talking about a camera that has no filter to prevent moire ??? If it were not for this specific detail I would totally buy this camera. But I don't think it's a serious tool if suddenly you can't film certain kinds of situations, like urban environments with a lot of fine-detail pattern architecture... or certain types of clothes... Anyway, it's a total deal-breaker for me, and I'm sad about it because the colors and tools and stabilization are so good. I'm just a bit shocked you don't even mention it…
@@cammackey I did notice you were using anamorphic. But I'm referring to your narration. You seem to be pretty categoric and emphatic about it as a whole in your verbal descriptions, and in your use of “no compromise”, not just in your specific use-case scenario. You are talking about the camera. Also: I believe you say you haven't noticed, but besides the fact of the specific type of things you shoot, and the way you shoot, I wouldn't be so sure about anything. For instance: I shoot some stuff that ends up on projections, in theaters (documentaries that sometimes screen in film festivals etc). And it does happen that you don't really notice the moiré in a small monitor, but on the huge screen, there it is, pulling your eyes towards it.
A millliom things brother. I love the BMCC6K but it requires a decent amount of rigging and attention when shooting in run n gun situations and just small color stuff. The new Pyxis should help with that but stuff won’t be a replacement for the S5IIX cause of form factor. Just different tools for different situations
It's bulky, the screen doesn't flip so it's impossible to mount a battery on the back. And the fact that it's just in real world just a s5ii without ibis and autofocus. Why bother?
@@lucasvivante8988 Internal BRAW for color grading. Bulky + Gyro stabilization works well (IBIS probably still better). OLPF helps a ton with moire. I really hate moire in buildings/skyscrapers so much. I am not convinced if lumix is as good in terms of color science.
@@cammackey I bought the BMCC6K recently and have been plagued with remorse for not buying this lumix :D . Though I wanted something that I didn't have to rig. If only lumix had internal BRAW.
I'm the *hot takes* guy today. 1 - The form factor ; it's still a photo body. Working everyday on a an FX3, the cube low-profile shape and no need for cage is a real game changer for small productions (not mentioning the buttons layout). 2 - The reality ; NOBODY uses Lumix on field, and when working with other productions (today) you'd better fit in if you don't want to be kicked out of a project where nobody has a spare lens or battery to exchange with you on a pinch. Excellent video btw, I'm not ranting here, just sometimes these "ideal scenario" videos lacks a TAD of everyday life reflexion.
1, I agree that the FX3 for factor is amazing. But you’re forgetting this is a hybrid camera. While I don’t use it a lot for stills, a lot of people still do. Tho I would love a move dedicated body for filmmaking. 2, I HIGHLY disagree with this one. I have never once been asked what camera I’ll be bringing to a job. Clients higher me for my work, not my camera. Literally never once have I been asked. I’m talking giant fashion commercials and campaigns. So sometimes the “ideal scenario” is different for everyone brother. Less lacking everyday reflection and more realizing maybe this video wasn’t exactly for your own workflow. What kind of work do ya shoot?
Naaaaa 😅 rolling shutter, bad audio and hdmi lag were enough to keep me away, and i am a panasonic fanboy... lumix better fix their issues before calling themselves professional again... also, there is a bug with drop frames issue when recording in ext raw... the hdmi lag is so bad that the focus puller started pulling his hair instead.
I’ve used these cameras on pro shoots, worked fun for me. Everyone had their own use case. And I don’t personally care for external raw. Nothing beats red raw still.
I recorded external raw with BM VA and Ninja V newer had these problems but if you use a cheapo HDMI cable and not rated HDMI 2.1 you will have drop frames for sure or if you don't update the Ninja V to the newest firmware...I had several problem with the new IO and proresraw...but it has nothing to do with S5iiX imho HDMI cable or FW update...
its funny that we, old lumix fanboys see those issues and when we note them we get bad responses in the groups/or youtube videos by new age "lumix creators" some of them even deleting our responses etc... we love lumix since day 1 but some issues are really pushing us away from the company we have invested and supported so many years, its really sad for that great camera company
This camera has a HUGE problem with static high pitched modulated impossible to delete in post noise related to the preamps being placed too close to the SD card slots. It's there when recording on the mic input as well as on the internal mic. This camera basically has NO audio imput. It's the reason it should be recalled.
Idk if I’ve ever ran into that issue personally. All my latest videos from like the past 6 months have basically been filmed on this camera and majority being recorded through the mic input. Or maybe I’m just too old to hear the frequency haha??
@@cammackeyI sold my s5iix for image purposes. The standout feature for me was the amazing audio preamps. My issue was terrible image quality - yours doesn’t seem to have the poor image problem - we wb every scene and use a false color lut for exposure
@@cammackey haha, I'm older than you and I hear it. Take the audio tracks from the camera and listen to them alone, it's probably there - every piece of this camera has this problem bc it's a design flaw consequence.
@@hhankx I rarely WB honestly haha. I usually keep everything at 5600k unless under really strong tungsten, then I usually do 4200k. I personally believe in letting the camera live in the natural color of the environment unless it’s really throwing off skin tones. And then for exposing I lift it all the way till highlights peak and then bring it down right below peaking. So sometimes it can over exposed by 4 stops but that gives me all the flexibility in post to chose the exposure
Would love to, but they never perform well. So don’t blame me haha. I uploaded this last week and it’s one of the worst performing videos in the past 3 months. ua-cam.com/video/pyu3W8OV99I/v-deo.html
The narrative stuff takes 10X the budget and time.. and yet not only does it not perform well, it almost tanks and performs worse than any other videos on the channel. We get pressured to constantly provide free content while trying to make a leaving while trying to educate and also provide fresh creative concepts. It’s exhausting honestly. Specially reading comments. Feels like a forever losing battle sadly. BUT I fucking love what I do and even tho those videos perform horribly, I have to do them for my own sanity. Dude this was an awesome video as always. I feel like I've been commenting the same thing all over UA-cam, but man the moment Panny makes an uncropped (48/60fps) fast readout full frame camera... Gonna have to retire my Sony from its A cam position.
which sony is currently the a cam?
@@olivertrees A7sIII, 4k60 uncropped is essential to me. I do switch around at times and experiment with using the S5ii as the A cam on certain days. It's crazy that a camera that's half the price can be nearly just as good, but better in certain aspects.
Broo! Im here again!!! The lumix gh7 and the s5iix are 2 fuc*king insane cameras!!! Wow!!!!!! I wanted to buy Sony but now….. mmmm i really don’t know! I wanted a camera that allows me to take photo and video! And i guess s5 is more suitable right? I saw the gh7 is more for video i guess and less photos! Unless you can tell me that i could also take photos with the gh7🙏? Thank you man❤️
I just got the S5ii and love it!
One of the few channels where it's officially sponsored and I can still trust what he says
I appreciate that! Funny anyone would think I’m lying or selling out when anyone could literally test everything I say myself and see I’m not making anything up haha
Between Panasonic S5ii and Nikon Z6iii what would you choose? Price is quite a bit different.
It’s even my big doubt! I need to change system and I cannot choose between them!
Great vid man. My only request with this camera is RAW recording to either an SSD or internally, even if it had to drop to 4K. That would be unbeatable.
It's the X variant. It can record both BRAW and ProResRAW to a USB-SSD up to 6K.
@@visceralpsyche I thought it was limited to ProRes HQ via SSD? Now I wanna test it...
@@ckhicks That and I'm also testing the GH7 which DOES shoot ProresRAW to the SSD!
@@visceralpsyche All good!
Oh weird I personally have never noticed that! I guess it’s not a huge issue for me. Could possibly be your SD cards??
@@cammackey what cards are you using in yours?
Great video featuring the camera. With PL adapter, can you do vertical anamorphic with the Remus?
Really considering this camera as my first hybrid as I start doing my own professional work. There’s lots of others but this keeps getting my attention. I need something thats very flexible because idk where my professional ventures will lead which brings ambiguity.
Cam, if you were starting over with no gear to start professionally and needed a hybrid what would you pick up? Realistically I’d like to spend $4k max on just the body.
So? What did you choose?
#LumixGang Cam you're a magician with any camera bro! Great video!
Gang gang! I love all cameras! Thanks for showing love brother. Thanks for always keeping it real.
S5iix’s IBIS puts it above most hybrid body’s for me. I have a an S5 and S5iix, ready to trade the S5 in for an S1HiiXxX
I am very excited about thd s1h2x and what it may brings. I bet panasonic will create a monster.
What? S5 have 6k open gate what are you talking about? You didn't make the firmware update??
@@lucasvivante8988 I have the original s5, not the S5ii.
Solid, Full Retention. Cheers
2 Questions: WHERE can I get that trucker cap? And is that the Blazar 45??? Both look slick.
Well well, looks like cammackey is also taking the american financial hit - i never thought i would see you enjoying prosumer cameras! (contains irony).
You were great in Twisters.
@@cammackey Agreed
Still no 1.6 dequeeze though. 1.5 close af for Sirui lenses etc... , but still Lumix....
Push it over the top!
I’m waiting on Sony to come up with something for me to upgrade this year. If not I’m switching back to Panasonic.
Just sold my Sony FX30, FX3 and A7IV and got two S5IIX and an S9. Cheaper and way better I’m surprised.
Good video Cam! Can i know wich tripod+fluid head did you use in this video?
The YCOnion tripod and a Sachtler Tripod too
@@cammackey Thank you
Great Camera and great Video. The only down side is the terrible moire
I haven’t experienced that personally. Granted I shoot with a lot of anamorphics which probably kills some sharpness
I’m currently saving up to get a s5iix hopefully by the end of the year! I really want to start doing video.
Why won't Lumix make an adapter for lenses from L-mount to micra 4/3? for example, i have both sistems and it's will be very interesting for me...
There’s no 1.6x anamorphic desqueeze, and there are quite a few 1.6x anamorphic lenses out there (like Sirui)
What a fantastic looking vidoe
*Amazing Work Mate!!* Just confused about how to mount it. S5ii is L mount, Remus is PL or EF... does that Mofage convert L to Pl mount? cheers :)
And of course with some research I see they do l mount to PL - all good :))
ISO must have been maxed out in that final scene!!
he said in a comment that last part was shot on an iPhone
@@Lu-sj6ni thx! I missed that
I’m pretty for zero exp. With anamorphic. Love to see more
Lumix is always overdo! And I mean that in a good way.
Did you find you got moire without an OLPF?
I wish that in the LUMIX S5 Mark 3 they have 6K 60FPS open gate. I don't see Nikon, Canon or Sony really pushing open gate. Do you think that will happen?
I really hope so too maybe with the sony fx3 mark 2?
i could almost hear u over the intro music
hope they give it that ARRI logc3
How much moire do you come across with this camera? If a bunch how do you deal with it?
Does switching to apsc mode minimise the rolling shutter issue? Also, 60fps can only work in this mode.
That’s a good question! Not sure honestly. And yeah the 60fps can get annoying. Tho, I do love they give us a 4:3 mode at least
Yes it cuts the rs in half basically. I used this mode all the time when I owned the s1h for that reason
Thanks 🤜🤛
whats this matte box on the thumbnail?
Shoul I buy a S5IIX OR GH7??
It's so good that I had mine stolen in transit after I ordered one 🙃
Question, I have a FX3 was looking to sell it and get a S5IIX per your video. Do you think I can do everything just as well as the FX3?
May I ask why ?
How is the moiré effect when shooting video? 'Cause it doesn't have an AA filter.
Why do you need AF system on a Lumix S5IIx?
Because I’m not using auto focus lenses..
@@cammackey got it! Cheers.
Lumix is great!
But please UA-cam switch to a compression which supports fine grain, we are in 2024 now! even Netflix can do this!
So basically the s1h mk 2 is coming out soon 😅
If it is, I have zero clue of it haha. But that would be exciting!!!
What codec did you guys mostly shoot in?
The standard MOV 10bit!
@@cammackey my favorite codec was making sure i was not missing out, thanks
When is the 60k giveaway happening?
All giveaways have been finished!!!
Appreciate it.
more importantly, where did you get that Hawaiian shirt?
Thrift store years ago lol
Great, but how can you use the expression "without compromises" talking about a camera that has no filter to prevent moire ??? If it were not for this specific detail I would totally buy this camera. But I don't think it's a serious tool if suddenly you can't film certain kinds of situations, like urban environments with a lot of fine-detail pattern architecture... or certain types of clothes... Anyway, it's a total deal-breaker for me, and I'm sad about it because the colors and tools and stabilization are so good. I'm just a bit shocked you don't even mention it…
Well… idk if you noticed… but I was using anamorphic…. I haven’t noticed any moire personally
9:07 What made blackmagic difficult to use in these conditions? Lumix has IBIS. Anything else?
Well, maybe it will change at some point if the camera is that good. Let's hope they will adept more different cameras
@@filipmichalsaffray441 this is why I don’t like dealing with external recording haha. I don’t trust it
its funny that we, old lumix fanboys see those issues and when we note them we get bad responses in the groups/or youtube videos by new age "lumix creators" some of them even deleting our responses etc... we love lumix since day 1 but some issues are really pushing us away from the company we have invested and supported so many years, its really sad for that great camera company
Thanks for pronouncing Nevada correctly 😂
Why can't lumix add false colour to cameras. Otherwise great cameras.
There are LUTs for V-Log false color monitoring.
This camera has a HUGE problem with static high pitched modulated impossible to delete in post noise related to the preamps being placed too close to the SD card slots. It's there when recording on the mic input as well as on the internal mic. This camera basically has NO audio imput. It's the reason it should be recalled.
yeah, sadly I have the same issue with S5IIX...
Great gear review! I know these videos help put food on your table but… MORE NARRATIVE VIDEOS PLEASE…
Would love to, but they never perform well. So don’t blame me haha. I uploaded this last week and it’s one of the worst performing videos in the past 3 months.
ua-cam.com/video/pyu3W8OV99I/v-deo.html
@@cammackeyI should have guessed that. It’s much easier for folks to chase gear than it is to chase ideas, creation, and art… I still love it though…
So, just sharing all of this so you know, UA-camrs care. But we also have to give people what they want.. even if they complain about it.
