    Paulsen and his dead pan delivery were brilliant

  • @Newsboy1410

    That droll, deadpan delivery...the ability to tweak the noses on BOTH sides of the political aisle...and having both side love him for it! It was the equivalent of audience members buying tickets to see Don Rickles in Vegas in the hope of being ridiculed by him. Pat was (and is) a national treasure.

    For some reason, this didn't hit a nerve for me but he was an extremely talented comedian and any videos of his I can watch, I look forward to the time spent.

    The one I loved more than most of his "bits" was when he told his joke about him finding "jaw breakers" and would break up while telling us that he took it home and put it in a jar! One of the many that you have to see to find out how good he was! He along with Foster Brooks were 2 of the most underrated comics out there at that time.

      I too have been searching for the "jaw breakers" bit on UA-cam. Endless monotone "joke" delivered on the #1 show on TV...which ended with NO punchline. Wonderful. Let me know if you ever find it.

    His last few lines: "I am an independent candidate... In other words, I'm nobody's fool."

    First telecast on March 3, 1968. For the last five weeks,Paulsen had been building up to a campaign by denying he had any intention of running.:-) In this official start, he reviewed the competition after announcing. I always remembered his remarks about Nixon, Percy, Reagan, Rockefeller, Wallace and Johnson. Later on I saw him in person-once at a local college and then with the Smothers Brothers on their summer tour.(His act was longer than the brothers' was.)

    Don't sell yourself short, Pat you can be my fool anytime. As a president, there have been worse.

    Pat Paulsen was indeed elected in 1968. Yet when he stood at his inauguration, with one hand on his family's tattered first edition of the Betty Crocker Cookbook, and intoned the oath of office for the Presidency, he removed the dour, haggard mask from his face, revealing himself to be Richard M. Nixon. He grinned and waggled his arms aloft, saying, "They called me Tricky Dicky. Alright. Take a good look. The joke's on you America." And so it was. Although nobody was laughing.

    Governor Rockefeller once sent me a wall calendar, a very clever thought; granted, it was for the previous year, but the pictures were quite pretty.

    That's deliberate mumbling. A little known comedic technique he used often, if the videos on here are any indication.

    • @Qrayon
      @Qrayon 7 років тому

      Hare I used to send away for a written copy of his speeches. That "mumbling" was actually just made-up nonsense words. E.g. "... and codge at the parges for slare all." I thought it was hilarious. I would memorize his editorials and recite them at the playground.

    • @cuda426hemi
      @cuda426hemi Рік тому +1

      It's called double-talk - not mumbling, not little-known. It's been used since vaudeville and Charlie Chaplain (Little Dictator)- more recently Jackie Gleason, Irwin Corey, Sid Caesar etc. 🎬

    Can anyone transcribe 6:25-30 ?
    I get, " ... dedicated to blabla sports, blabla, blabla, blablaing, and the American people."

    • @Qrayon
      @Qrayon 7 років тому +2

      RandE Clarke. Note that right before that at 6:19 , he says, "I represent the STRAIGHT-TALKING American Government Party," then almost immediately proceeds to speak a few words gibberish. He did that in his editorials on the Smothers Brothers Show, and I always thought it was a riot!
