- Pat Paulsen's emotional appeal just days before the Presidential election.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

54 years later, I still write in Pat Paulson for President!
He is still the best possible candidate!!
God help us in 2024.
I'd give you crap for being one of the 150,000-200,000+ voters each year that throw their votes away, but in case I don't blame you. I think one candidate is clearly a worse person than the other, but the choice is like getting stabbed because someone who doesn't know how they got there dropped a dagger on your foot when they fell asleep, or getting stabbed in the foot by someone holding a bloody sword while trying to convince you that they were innocent and it was really your irksome elderly neighbor who did it.
RIP, Pat Paulson. It is wonderful to once again hear how fantastic you were.
Thanks for watching!
I loved Pat Paulsen, he made every election interesting. I loved the Smother's Brothers show and hated when it was canceled.
I was just twelve years old while watching Pat Paulson on the Smothers Brothers. My favorite segment. He always had me in stitches.
He was brilliant!! In tears as well as stitches. What we went through as a country after this election!
Mine too! Everyone LOVED Pat Paulson -- brilliant satirist! Wish he were still around today. He'd make the nightmare a little bit easier!
Yep
Got to meet Dick Smothers in Sarasota FL. Great guy and nice as anything. He later in gave me an autograph picture of him and Tommy. I cherish the picture reminds me of my childhood watching the show with my big brother who has passed away. It makes me smile. Thanks to the Smother Brothers and Pat Paulsen.
Oh Dear! Wait a minute while I wipe my tears away!
Oh Tommy Smothers you " MR. YOYOMAN" were my favorite brother!
💞🙏🏻
I remember the TV nights when our family would pile into the den to watch " The Smothers Brothers Show"!.
It was an hour of truly edgy 60'S entertainment.
I remember the night your show had been canceled by the station for pushing the envelope. I think it was about your protesting of the War the US was sending boy's to in Vietnam!? We were heartbroken losing your show!
But a few years later along came ROWEN MARTIN'S LAUGH IN TV and they BROKE all the TV regulations!
So thankfully they Brought you and Dick on as guest's!
Thanks for teaching us YOYO TRICKS and to always to "QUESTION AUTHORITIES"!
REST in PEACE and LOVE forever TOMMY!
I Thank both of you brother for truly touching my heart and soul as a pre-teen and affected my direction in life.
🕊❤💫🕯🎶🧿🙏🏻
This brought tears to my eyes, too. I had no idea Paulsen's talents extended to his beauitful singiing voice!
Still have my 1968 Pat Paulsen campaign button.
i was in jr high during this time, the school did a student vote , pat was voted once , the guy that voted for him became the most popular lol
I'm envious!
I was 15 at this time. I loved the Smothers Brothers
This is humor at its best! I hope young people would watch this...but they probably wouldn't...they'll never know what they missed with sixties humor and the censors trying to stop it even though it was quite tame compared to today ....I am glad I am older and can appreciate it!
The Major Media Companies were in the control of the Govt.---then Watergate, and the forced Govt. censorship cracked... Until Covid, of course.
Wat an intelligent comic Paulson was! BRilliant peformer! I miss him.
I always loved Pat!!!
VOTE FOR PAT -- WRITE HIM IN
MAKE A STATEMENT!!!
I did in my primary. There were some write in slots. I even spelled his name correctly.
Those were the days. I miss all the old entertainment. What a great show and Pat was always funny.
This is the same as a Daily Show or John Oliver bit.
Actually, I think it's better.@@numskul
So sorry to hear about Tom Smothers’ recent passing. R.I.P. Tommy
We need you Pat Paulsen 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Every election year he would be on our local radio stations still running for president. My favorite lines were, " Pat needs somewhere to sleep, why not the White House," and "Pat's not worried about matching campaign funds, hell he doesn't even have matching socks." I sure do miss hearing him. R.I.P. Mr. Paulsen.
His campaign slogan, "I've up my standards, now up yours!" Along with enlightened immigration policy comment, were gold to me !
Pat Paulson was awesome!
That was a damn good piece, perhaps the finest Paulsen bit I've seen.
Point about tolerance for satire still extremely relevant!
Well, I am embarrassed to admit, Richard Nixon was so angered by the Smothers Brothers jokes and jibes that he ORDERED them to be removed from broadcast. OK, the party disavows but that is the historical fact. (quiet cough, then talking a bit louder as if for a mic) And I sure am glad that in the 21st century we have always enjoyed *totally* free expression and speech, unless it's something bad the government knows is bad for us!
Would vote for Pat 😂 RIP Tommy 🙏
I never knew.... Thank you for your service to America. Your humor was indeed unique ♥️
This is an amazing artifact. I used to watch the smothers brothers every week, and I remember Pat Paulsen telling people really not to vote for him. The election was two days from then, and ... what I do remember is that within a few months of Nixon winning the election this show was toast. One Sunday night I turned on the tv and there was HeeHaw. What?????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was mad and sad.
Yeah, but it wasn't long before you got a reprieve when a show called "All In The Falily" premiered following an installment of "Hee Haw" .
really? I didn't know that! So it was censored. What a horrible comment on America at that time!
55 years later and still relevant. That is kinda sad.
This looks more profound with each passing election.
We need you more than ever now!😢
I remember this, Pat Paulson for President.
He would still be better than what we have now. FJB
At the end, he had me crying like a baby.
Me too!
I used to have an LP that Paulsen put out, all about his 'campaign'. Hilarious.
As someone not quite old enough to have been around during this, I can see why things were better 40-50 years ago.
Everyone ignored the problems in favor of comedy.
The best pitch ever
RIP Tommy.
Such a unique time in our history. Almost seemed like people cared about politics and democracy. Now it’s just one big dysfunctional school board meeting
I approve of the "ennie mini miney moe" method
My Dad was the Art Director on _The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour._
I would have voted for him ... But I couldn't find his name on the ballot 🎉
The epitome of dead pan humor. One of my favorites along with the Hippy Lady. I don't think I ever missed an episode. Very sad when it was cancelled. The radical right cancel culture fascists are still with us unfortunately.
Just change the names of the candidates and this sketch would be as funny and relevant as it was when it first aired.
BTW, I met Pat Paulsen once. He was a polite and very mild-mannered gentleman who struck me as being very intelligent.
That makes sense, those qualities come through in his performances, too.
I wonder if things worked out for that Wallace guy and the Nixon guy.
NO!! LOL
Poignant
From South Bend! I been there
He is still relevant today.
He really served as a Marine WWII
Yep. We, I mean you, need someone like Pat aa President. Steve in Canada. Note: I hope Kamala wins.
Where are prime time satirical shows today?
My how times change. Government can no longer tolerate that we make fun of it, and segregation in the guise of affirmative action and DEI is now national policy. Again.
I have a bottle of 1980 cabernet sauvignon autographed by Pat Paulson after he did a show in Sacramento in June 1984
I hope it's good. 😎
Tommy Smothers died this day Dec 27, 2023
A Presidential candidate who falls asleep!!!
Vote for a man who wants world peace and believes in law and order??? Where is Pat Paulsen? I'll write him in for 2024 (if he's still alive) .
He passed away in 1997, but I'm sure he could still keep some of his campaign promises (for instance, "if elected, I will not serve.")
Genius humor. Although not as funny as Biden.
This sounds just like what trump did in 2016
