  • Tommy Smothers, Yo-Yo Man, does his tricks for Dick Smothers on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
    The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

My husband and I just a few nights ago were talking about Yo You Man. Even decades old memory of him has me laughing. When I learned of TS's death, I came here. My husband and I laughed raucously. It felt wonderful. Yes, it was a simple pleasure that stands the test of time.

It's amazing that Tommy Smothers could do a comedy routine based on his expertise with doing yo-yo tricks. I remembers yo-yos being a very popular toy with kids my own age at that time. That, slinkys, and play-dough occupied me for hours at a time. Unfortunately, I tried, but couldn't emulate the tricks Tommy Smothers could do. In the late sixties there were no electronic toys, or Play-Stations. But we still had a lot of fun with what we had.

    in 1984,
I was part of a Tommy Smothers skit and didn't know it.
He was in the lobby of a hotel singing a song he had written while laying on his back kickin' his feet and arms in the air! The song was about the Betty Ford center to the tune of "they are coming to take me away ha ha" He then hopped up and said let''s go get a drink at a nearby bar. We went out to a rental car parked just out the hotel lobby and four of us got in. He looked over at me and asked if I had the keys? I laughed and he asked the guys in the back for the keys. It was obvious, at that point, that it wasn't his car! We all laughed and went back inside the hotel!
I'm sure he had played this prank before!
It was a chance meeting and the funny coincidence was that the Smothers' piano player Michael Preddy was my
piano teacher in Texas college a year before meeting with them in upstate New York!

I never really watched Tom Smothers Yo-Yo stuff, but I got into Yoing when I was in High School and the Tom Smothers Yo-Yo was probably my favorite of all time. They did all eventually fall apart, they had glued wooden shafts, but they felt so good in the hand and had amazing spin and energy. Yo-Yo's got way more complicated after that, but that mass-market Yo-Yo was really exceptional.
